Stewartstown Area Senior Center, 26 S. Main St., Stewartstown, has announced its upcoming schedule of activities. For more information, readers may call the center at 717-993-3488.

On Wednesday, July 10, Barb’s aerobics class will meet in the Community Building at the fairgrounds. At the senior center, a Veterans Services officer will be on hand from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. to answer questions by appointment. Mary Ellen will be available to assist anyone who would like to paint ceramics. Participants may request specific items to paint. The bridge club will meet at noon.

On Thursday, July 11, Barb will lead her aerobics class in the Community Building at the fairgrounds. At the senior center, a nurse will be available to check weights and blood pressures. Kings in the Corner will be played at 9:30 a.m.

Jamie will be on hand for chair massages at 9:30 a.m. Wii games will be available in the morning. Chair yoga will start at 10:30 a.m. Art class, mahjongg, and Hand and Foot games will begin at noon.

Dominoes will be played after lunch.

On Friday, July 12, various table games will be available in the morning.

Indoor bocce ball will begin at 10:30 a.m. Bingo will be played after lunch.

On Monday, July 15, Barb’s aerobics class will meet in the Community Building at the fairgrounds. At the senior center, Wii bowling and other games will be available throughout the day. For the first night of the Eureka Fireman’s Carnival, the public is invited to visit the center’s stand to purchase strawberry or peach smoothies to benefit the center.

On Tuesday, July 16, Barb’s aerobics class will not meet due to the carnival.

To celebrate the “dog days of summer,” the public is invited to bring in pictures of their pets and talk about them. Wii and table games will be available throughout the day. After lunch, Doug will be available to assist with computer issues. The pinochle group will meet at noon. The public is invited to return to the center’s carnival stand to purchase smoothies.

On Sunday, July 14, the Conservation Society of York County (CSYC) will hold its annual members picnic at Indian Steps Museum, 205 Indian Steps Road, Airville. The picnic event will begin at 1 p.m. at the Grissinger Pavilion and is open to the public.

Students will conduct a BioBlitz scavenger hunt on the farm grounds to gather baseline biodiversity data, then propose a solution for improving the area’s ecological health. Participants should come ready to think deeply and solve real-life problems facing today’s communities.

Junior Naturalists are invited though not required - to bring a smartphone to participate in the BioBlitz activity, and they may download the iNaturalist app to get started. The Horn Farm in Hellam Township has been continuously farmed for more than 250 years. The Horn Farm Center for Agricultural Education was established as a nonprofit at the Horn Farm in 2004. In 2016, a conservation easement was placed on the property, thus preserving the farm in perpetuity. The Horn Farm Center is committed to building and growing a healthy community through hands-on farming, gardening, and food preparation experiences.

St. John’s Blymire’s United Church of Christ, 1009 Blymire Road, Dallastown, will present its Sunday Summer Concert Series on July 14 from 2 to 5 p.m. in the church pavilion. The Brodbecks Band will perform marches and concert tunes, including selections by musician composer Roland F. Seitz, a Glen Rock native.

The Horn Farm Center for Agricultural Education will kick off “ Where the Wild Things Grow,” a youth summer program for children ages 6 to 12, on Thursday, July 18. The program will take place from 9 a.m. to noon on Thursdays through Aug. 8, offering students a chance for hands-on exploration on the grounds of the Horn Farm Center for Agricultural Education, 4945 Horn Road, Hellam.

Under the guidance of Jason Reed, director of sustainability and ecoliteracy at the Waldorf School of Baltimore, students will engage the environment from the farm’s wild edges to its cultivated gardens.

Reed is a passionate contributor to the dialogue on ecological responsibility and people’s role in the world. He lives on a five-acre homestead near Stewartstown, which he shares with heritage hogs and turkeys, goats, chickens, and a basement bug-growing operation. Reed is a founding member of the Filbert Street Community Garden in Baltimore, an Open Society Institute-recognized project. The garden is an urban food forest designed as a safe space for community members to educate and organize around their resources to create a safer, healthier home.

With an emphasis on holistic fun, activities at “Where the Wild

Things Grow” will include foraging for wild food, playing in the stream, tracking and observing wildlife, growing and harvesting sprouts and microgreens, and investigating the natural world.

Since activities will be outdoors in all weather, participants should dress accordingly and bring a backpack of appropriate supplies such as sunscreen, bug spray, and towels.

The Horn Farm Center will also host a three-day adventure in Junior Naturalist Training from Monday, July 29, to Wednesday, July 31. Environmental educator Elyse Jurgen will guide students through activities in age-appropriate groups. Building Backyard Habitats, designed for students ages 9 to 11, will be held from 9 to 11:30 a.m., and Building Community Habitats, designed for students ages 12 to 14, will be held from 12:30 to 3 p.m.

In Building Backyard Habitats, younger students will explore the farm through the eyes of their favorite critters. By gathering found materials on the grounds, participants will design a model of their creature’s habitat. Students can take these skills home to support wildlife in their own backyards.

Craley Community Celebration

Che Stained Glass in Jacobus, suggested that Walthour teach church members how to make stained glass windows. More than 30 people ranging in age from 12 to 73 volunteered to help with the project. During the nine-year project, congregants built 18 windows in the sanctuary focused on the life and saying of Jesus Christ. They later created large windows in two entrances focused on “The Garden of Eden” and the hymn “Rejoice, Ye Pure in Heart” and the chorus “Jesus Loves the Little

Children of the World.”

During the anniversary service, the congregation will recognize this group of window makers on the anniversary of the unique project. There will also be a dedication of three windows made this year for the community room. The new windows were mainly made by new artisans. The public is invited to an open house from 2 to 3 p.m. to view the windows. The sanctuary will also be open for those who may have never seen the original windows.

The Ma and Pa Railroad Heritage Village at Muddy Creek Forks, 1258 Muddy Creek Forks Road, Airville, will again host a Civil War encampment, complete with soldiers drilling, loading and firing weapons, and displaying items they carried. More than a dozen re-enactors will be on hand on Sunday, July 14, from 1 to 5 p.m. to answer questions while giving attendees a better understanding of the challenges and sacrifices soldiers faced.

Richard Anderson, corporal with 87th Pennsylvania Volunteers, Company C, and also superintendent of the Ma and Pa Railroad Historical Society, is organizing the event. New this

year will a food display. If time permits, a trial of a female serving in the ranks will demonstrate the challenges women had serving in the armed forces in the 1860s.

Visitors can also explore the 1899 A.M. Grove General Store, mill and grain elevator, where they will be welcomed by costumed docents. Hourly motorcar train rides through the Muddy Creek Valley will be offered at set fees for adults and children. The last train will depart 45 minutes before closing. Ice Cream Trail Expands Pennsylvania travelers are invited to enjoy the newly expanded Pennsylvania Ice Cream Trail. After a popular inaugural season, the Pennsylvania Ice Cream Trail expanded from 12 creameries in eastern and southcentral Pennsylvania into three trails including a Western Pennsylvania Trail, with a total of 32 stops in these regions for 2019.

Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding and Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED) deputy secretary Carrie Fischer Lepore recently joined local and state officials to kick off the 2019 Ice Cream Trail season at Chester Springs Creamery at Milky Way Farm in Chester Springs. The creamery is on a historic 103-acre dairy farm that has been home to four generations of the Matthews family. It is one of 10 stops on the Eastern Pennsylvania Trail.

Initiated in 2018, the trail is a partnership of the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture’s (PDA) PA Preferred program, the DCED’s PA Tourism Office, and the Center for Dairy Excellence (CDE) to highlight dairy destinations across Pennsylvania.

The program includes a passport that visitors can have stamped to earn prizes at stops along each trail. More information about creameries on the trail,

Food Bank Receives Donation

The York New Salem Lions Club, District 14-C, supports the St. Jacobs Lutheran Church Food Bank in York New Salem. Lions Club member Jan Noss (right) presented a check for $600 to food bank director Dave Trone on April 6.

In addition to providing financial support, the Lions Club sends volunteers to the food bank each month to help provide food and clothing to people in need.

Waltemyer Earns Girl Scout Gold Award

Girl Scouts in the Heart of Pennsylvania has announced that Ashton Waltemyer, 17, of York has earned the Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest honor a Girl Scout can earn. The award signifies that a Scout has made a meaningful, sustainable change to her community and the world.

She earned the award during her senior year at Spring Grove Area High School.

Ashton, a volunteer firefighter, worked to restore the Hanover Fire Museum. She organized the installation of new windows and new floors and the repainting of the entire building to bring the building up to code.

Outstanding Senior nominees from academic departments at Mansfield University, Mansfield, were recognized at the academic honors reception on April 9 and named at commencement on May 4. Local recipients include Kristine Ferg of New Freedom.

Ferg was nominated by the Art Department. She is a recent graduate from Mansfield University with a Bachelor of Science in graphic design, a Bachelor of Arts in art history, and a minor in studio art. During her time at Mansfield, Ferg was president of the Art Exhibition Committee and interned at the National Museum of the American Indian and Corning Inc. She hopes to pursue a master’s degree in fine art and later a doctorate degree in art history.
