A special lecture titled “River Crossings: The Volcano Vs. the Bridge” will be presented on Saturday, July 13, by Dr. David Glenn and Dr. Roger Wilson, co-authors of the local history publication “The River and the Ridge.” The event will begin at 1 p.m. in the Kiva Room at the Indian Steps Museum, 205 Indian Steps Road, Airville.

American Legion Riders Raise Funds Members of American Legion Riders (ALR) Post 455, Stewartstown, participated in the Tech Sgt. Daniel L. Zerbe Ride sponsored by the Red Lion ALR Post 543 on June 8.

More than 200 motorcycles and 250 riders participated in the event, which started at York Excavating.

Red Lion Borough’s New Year’s Eve Committee will hold the annual Roarin’ Great Car Show and Stay at Home Celebration on Thursday, July 4, at Fairmount Park from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. The car show will offer 16 classes of competition, including antique, street rod, modern, classic, truck and others.

Cars may register on the day of the event from 8 to 10 a.m. There is a cost per car. The first 100 participants will receive a commemorative dash plaque.

The Stay at Home Celebration will

feature a craft and direct sales vendor fair and food trucks from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. A chicken barbecue will be held to raise funds for Red Lion Recreation Softball, along with Red Lion Recreation events. The cost of a meal will include a half-chicken, a baked potato, a roll, and applesauce.

All proceeds will benefit the Red Lion New Year’s Eve Roarin’ in the New Year celebration. For more information or to order chicken dinners in advance, readers may call Red Lion Recreation at 717-244-6896.

The York Hiking Club will offer a variety of hikes to the community. Hikes vary in difficulty and length, and readers should contact the hike leader for details on a specific hike. Leadership York hosted a graduation ceremony for its Future Leaders of York (FLY) program on May 19. The Future Leaders of York Class of 2019 consisted of 36 high school sophomores and juniors from 21 schools. The 2019 class was the 30th class to graduate through the FLY program.

Heart Ball Raises Nearly $200,000

More than 175 business, health care and community leaders from across York County attended the 2019 York Heart Ball, “Rev Up Your Heart,” on April 27 at the Country Club of York. The event, which had a “Grease” theme, raised nearly $200,000 for the American Heart Association, a voluntary health organization focused on heart and brain health.

Television news anchor Amy Lutz hosted the evening’s festivities, which included silent and live auctions, dinner and dancing.

The American Heart Association, York Division, presented its Volunteer of the Year Award to Will Lavery and the Passion Award to longtime Heart Ball volunteers Teann Scoggins and Joel Rosenblatt.

The real star of the evening was 2-yearold Bristol Miller of Airville. On March 1,

2018, 14-month-old Bristol was home with her babysitter while her parents, Josh and Leah Miller, were at work. That afternoon, Josh, who is also a local paramedic, received an emergency page for a pediatric cardiac arrest at the babysitter’s address. He knew immediately it was Bristol. He rushed home, arriving just behind the ambulance, to find responders performing CPR on tiny Bristol.

Her babysitter, a former nurse, had also been performing CPR. The responders were able restore a normal heart rhythm, but Bristol continued to need supportive CPR on her way to the hospital.

Bristol spent five weeks in the hospital with other complications, including seizures, infection and a blood clot in her heart. Doctors were not able to determine exactly what

She had to relearn to sit, crawl, walk and talk during her rehabilitation, but has since returned to the normal life of a 2-year-old girl. She recently became a big sister.

Funds raised will support the American Heart Association’s mission to be a relentless force for a world of longer, healthier lives through community education, health care quality improvement, investment in lifesaving research and public policy advocacy, including advocating for Senate Bill 114 to

ensure all Pennsylvania high school students receive Hands-Only CPR training.

The York Heart Ball was co-chaired by Sally Dixon, senior vice president of UPMC Pinnacle South Region, and Michael Gaskins, president and CEO of UPMC Pinnacle South Region.

Stewartstown ALR group hosted a charity fundraising ride through southern York County. Post 455 is located at 19222 Barrens Road South, Stewartstown.

The ride raised funds for area charities that help veterans and their families.

A total of 64 motorcycles and 113 riders and guests participated in the event, which began at Post 455. The group, led by ride captain Keith Foor, traveled along a winding course through several towns, including Stewartstown, Fawn Grove, and New Park.

The ride ended at the Stewartstown American Legion Post, where food, beverages and fellowship were followed by Biker Games. Plaques were awarded to the winners. DJ Rockin’ Robby provided music for the event.

More than $2,000 was raised via registration fees, Biker Games entry fees and sponsor donations. Proceeds from the event will go to several local veterans’ charities including York County MilitaryShare Food Bank and York County Veterans Outreach.

The South Central York County Senior Center, 150 E. Main St., New Freedom, will host upcoming activities. Individuals must be members of the center to participate in the center’s activities. To become a member, interested readers may stop by the center and sign up, and they should bring a driver’s license or other photo ID card.

Menges Mills Show Planned The 33rd annual Menges Mills Historic Horse, Steam and Gas Association Show, which will feature Oliver tractors, will be held at White Rose Motorcycle Club (Jefferson Hill Climbs), 5252 Hillclimb Road, Spring Grove, on Friday, July 12; Saturday, July 13; and Sunday, July 14. July 12 will be setup day.
