Event Will Highlight Brass Era Cars The Maryland and Pennsylvania (Ma & Pa) Railroad Heritage Village at Muddy Creek Forks will hold its third Early American Automobile event on Sunday, June 30. Members of the Susquehanna Valley Region Chapter of the Horseless Carriage Club of America (HCCA) will display Brass Era cars during the museum’s regular operating hours of 1 to 5 p.m. The event will feature a 1909 White touring car, a 1910 EMF touring car, a 1913 Model T Roadster, and a 1914 Model T touring car. Vehicles will be staged near the A.M. Grove General Store and mill complex. Owners will be on hand to show their cars and answer questions. Previous events have featured pre-1916 cars made by various manufacturers including Ford, Chevrolet, Pullman, REO, Chalmers-Detroit, Maxwell, Buick, and others. In addition, costumed
docents will be on hand. The HCCA is a group of individuals who either own or have an interest in Brass Era cars. While it is primarily a touring club, members also enjoy participating in static displays where they can interact more with the public. The local chapter of the HCCA has members who live primarily in Lancaster, York, and Berks counties as well as northern Maryland. Admission to the village and buildings is free. Hourly motorcar train rides will be available for a fee, which is discounted for children. The last train will depart 45 minutes before closing. BLAST To Include Pie Baking Contest Jacobus Lions Club will hold its first-ever BLAST Pie Baking Contest at the Fourth of July BLAST at Jacobus Community Park, 18 S. Main St., Jacobus, on Thursday, July 4. The category of pies to be baked from scratch will be fruit pies, including cherry, apple, peach, berry, and others. Pie entries should be dropped off at the Jacobus Ambulance Building between 8:30 and 9:30 a.m. on July 4. An entry form must be filled out for each pie along with an entry fee paid for each pie. Winners will be announced at 11:45 a.m. on July 4 at the Smith Village Music Fest Stage in the park. Prizes and ribbons will be awarded, and photos will be taken. The remainder of each pie, after judging occurs, will be available for purchase by the piece at the Jacobus See Pie Baking Contest pg 5

Diane L. Krasner, Ph.D., RN, FAAN, was awarded the John Boswick Memorial Award and Lectureship for outstanding lifetime achievement in wound healing on May 11 at the 32nd annual Symposium on Advanced Wound Care and Wound Healing Society meeting in San Antonio. According to the award plaque, Krasner was recognized “for her achievements and tireless work, which have considerably advanced the field of wound care.” The Boswick Award has been presently annually since 2002. Together with two of her mentees, Catherine T. Milne and Kevin Y. Woo, Krasner presented the Boswick Lectureship, titled “Themes From a Career in Wound Care and Beyond.” Krasner is a wound and skin care consultant and expert witness in York. She serves as cochair of the Why Wound Care? Campaign and as co-chair for the Post Acute Care Symposium. She has served as editor or co-editor

July4York, York’s free Independence Day celebration, will kick off at 5 p.m. on Thursday, July 4, at the home of the York Revolution, 5 Brooks Robinson Way, York. York Traditions Bank, presenting sponsor of July4York, and Eventive have announced that the event will feature plenty of family-friendly, free fun to celebrate America’s birthday. Among the highlights will be live music throughout the afternoon and evening, a plaza full of Americana nostalgia and fun for children, the chance to climb the highest wall in professional baseball, and a fireworks display. Eleven individuals were recently awarded scholarships from the Merit Shop Training and Research Center (MSTRC). The $23,000 in scholarships for the 2019-2020 academic year brings the total that has been awarded by MSTRC since its inception to $517,000, helping students entering a career path in the construction industry. Reptile Forest Walks, led by a naturalist, have been set for 11 a.m. to noon on July 2, 3, and 5. Small, preregistered groups will travel through the woods at Nixon Park investigating the habitats of native reptiles and amphibians. After-Hours Sea Turtle Watercolor Classes will take place on July 2 and 3 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Attendees should arrive by 5:30 p.m. for an optional private tour of Reptile Week live animal exhibits. The sea turtle scene watercolor painting class will begin at 6 p.m. with artist Teanna B. The class is open to beginners age 10 and up. There is an additional per-person cost. Turtles of Pennsylvania and Maryland will be presented on July 7 from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Attendees will learn how to identify local turtle species and their habitats, discover their egg laying habits in summer, and learn about threats to local populations. They will also learn about the most common abandoned and escaped pet species found and cared for by MidAtlantic Turtle and Tortoise Society turtle rescue. Aquatic Amphibian Searches will take place from 9 to 10 a.m. on Tuesday, July 2; Wednesday, July 3; and Friday, July 5. Small preregistered groups will venture into the stream and scoop from the pond in search of tadpoles, salamander larva, and adult frogs and salamanders. Led by a naturalist, participants will get a look into local water habitats. Nonregistered park visitors may not play in the stream or pond outside of a naturalist-led program. The event is appropriate for people age 7 and up with an adult helper. Space is limited. Snake Dissection has been set for June 30 at 2 p.m. Attendees will learn about the anatomy of a large constrictor as a veterinarian dissects a reticulated python that died of natural causes. PennDOT Honors Star Of Excellence Recipients Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) Secretary Leslie S. Richards recently recognized 30 PennDOT employees with the Star of Excellence Award, PennDOT’s highest recognition. Two employees from PennDOT District 8, which represents Adams, Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin, Lancaster, Lebanon, and York counties, were among the honorees. The Star of Excellence Awards are presented annually to employees who represent the department’s values of service, performance, and integrity. The recipients represent a variety of organizational positions, spanning from highway maintenance and driver and vehicle services workers, to traffic control specialists, communications staff, and design and engineering specialists. District 8 winners Douglas Knoll and Mahzar Malik were honored at an awards luncheon at the Governor’s Residence in Harrisburg, along with six local people employed by PennDOT bureaus in the Harrisburg area. As the district bridge engineer, Knoll implemented the “P-Team” within District 8-0. This team is composed of district design and maintenance personnel at various levels. Under his leadership, the team has exceeded the district’s goal of reducing structurally deficient bridges by both number and also by deck area. Knoll has re-engineered how the district scopes and reviews bridge design projects, leading to reduced consultant hours by making key design decisions earlier in the process. Knoll resides in Hummelstown.
Malik has all highway occupancy-related responsibilities for the eight counties that make up District 8-0. In the previous fiscal year, he and his unit received 3,985 applications. Malik provides the key project requirements at each scoping application meeting. He also identifies milestones that need to be met so that the applicants can meet their anticipated construction schedule. Malik takes the time to ensure all are on the same page and satisfied that their concerns have been addressed. Malik is a resident of Lemoyne. Keith Doersom, the chief pilot from the Bureau of Aviation, has been providing the service of three people since 2012. Doersom frequently flies the governor and other highlevel Pennsylvania executives on routine and emergency-based trips. In addition, he inspects and maintains the state plane, supervising and performing repairs of the engine, landing gear, and other operating components of the aircraft. While preforming his duties as chief pilot, Doersom also serves as the airport inspector and flight service manager. He is a resident of Newville. Rich Heineman, a roadway program manager with the Bureau of Maintenance and Operations, worked successfully in 2018 to develop and implement a new section in the Maintenance Technical Leadership Division dedicated to the management of stormwater and the Municipal Separate Storm Sewer Systems (MS4) program. His development of this section has allowed

PennDOT to reach out to municipalities and partner with them and Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) to meet statewide stormwater goals and implementation of local programs. The stormwater manual, PUB 888, and associated training outlines the state and federal requirements PennDOT must adhere to be compliant with laws and regulations. Heineman lives in New Freedom. Erica Dutton began working for the Commonwealth 13 years ago in the Utilities and Right-of-Way Section as a clerk typist 2. She has progressed to working for two former secretaries and two deputy secretaries. In her current role as an administrative officer in the office of the deputy secretary for administration, Dutton leads several different areas that support the entire agency. She is PennDOT’s liaison to the Governor’s Office for Out of State Travel and has served as the agency’s co-coordinator for the commonwealth’s annual State Employees Combined Appeal (SECA) campaign, a role she has held since 2015. In 2018, PennDOT raised the highest dollar amount among all agencies for SECA. Dutton is a resident of Camp Hill. Stephanie Shoemaker, an accountant with the Bureau of Fiscal Management, spent the last two years coordinating the “Standards of Internal Controls in Commonwealth Agencies.” This new agenda requires the department to submit an internal controls template and create a corresponding risk assessment and monitoring plan. Shoemaker also coordinated many aspects and responses for the department’s performance audit conducted by the commonwealth’s auditor general by collaborating with deputies and several departmental
organizations. She resides in Harrisburg. Jessica Clark, a transportation planning manager, manages the 12-year program section in the Center for Program Development and Management. She has dedicated herself to transforming the biennial update of that program’s list of projects into an innovative process that educates Pennsylvanians about transportation planning and invites their participation through public outreach strategies and communication methods. Because of Clark’s effort, the quantity and quality of data and comments received per dollar spent on technical support are significantly more valuable for the department, State Transportation Commission (STC), and its planning partners in development of plans and programs. She and her team received awards from AASHTO Subcommittee on Transportation Research Communication and the Transportation Research Board for their work. Clark lives in Shermans Dale. As the complement control manager for Driver and Vehicle Services, Rayna Lemelle is the “go to” person for all things related to keeping approximately 1,400 positions filled. Her organizational skills served her well when she was assigned the task of creating and requesting postings and execution of the hiring process for an additional 246 positions dedicated to the task of meeting federal requirements for issuance of REAL ID’s during 2018 and 2019. Barbecue Festival Set In Delta

Organizers expect that Delta’s fourth annual barbecue festival, dubbed the official York County Barbecue Festival now for the third year, will once again attract thousands of people. The event, an outgrowth of the Delta Pride revitalization initiative, is slated for 5 to 10 p.m. on Friday, June 28, and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday, June 29, and will include barbecue-related cooking competitions, activities for people of all ages, live musical performances, and - new this year - a car show. Once again Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf and the York County Board of Commissioners have proclaimed it the official York County Barbecue Festival, and national, state, and county dignitaries are expected to attend at 4 p.m. on June 29. On both days, the borough’s Main Street from College Avenue to Broad Street will be lined by more than 40 vendors, selling wares and presenting displays. Craftspeople and artisans will be present, and area churches, fire companies, Scout groups, businesses, and the local Lions club, along with other civic organizations, will participate. Barbecue and pit meats such as ribs, beef, pork, brisket, and chicken will be sold, along with other festival foods, such as funnel cakes, lemonade, french fries, seafood, ice cream, and milkshakes. Children’s activities each day
will include bounce houses, a dunking stand, and face painting. On June 29, adults can compete in keg tossing, tire flips, and a board race. Also that day, a double-elimination cornhole tournament coordinated by ACL Keystone State Cornhole Association is set for 1 p.m., and contestants can win cash prizes. Tickets may be purchased by visiting www.key stonestatecornhole.com, and social and advanced divisions will be available, with a minimum of three places awarded in each. Delta’s Old Line Museum on Main Street will be open for people to view historical artifacts and displays. Also, the museum will host a giveaway of a free children’s bicycle at 8 p.m. on the festival’s main stage. Pennsylvania State Police will be on hand with a static display, and the Harford County Sheriff’s Office will bring its mobile Hope House that presents information to parents about teenage drug use. Bands and musical groups performing classic rock, country, and other music will play on three stage areas throughout the two days, and a beer garden will be located at the rear of DP Lounge/Delta Pizza, which will also have special music. Bearman Commits To Enlist In Army York Catholic High School’s Gregory Bearman has committed to enlist in the United States Army. Bearman was a member of the York Catholic football team and German Club. He is an Eagle Scout and a World War II reenactor. He has performed more than 100 hours of community service, with activities such as a live Nativity, Living Stations, and Wreaths Across America. He has also
served as a drummer for Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church and a trout stocker at Muddy Creek Forks. Bearman plans on enlisting as an infantryman and advancing to possibly become a combat medic and join special operations forces. He hopes to attend West Point and eventually rise to the rank of captain or major. He is the son of Philip and Elizabeth Bearman of Shrewsbury.

The 30th annual Fawn Grove Olde Tyme Days has been set for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, June 28, 29, and 30, at the show grounds, 110 N. Market St., Fawn Grove. The event benefits the Citizens Volunteer Fire Company in Fawn Grove. Attendees will be able to take a step back in time to watch a variety of tractor pulls, as well as gas engines and many tractors. There will also be dancing, children’s events, food, flea markets, and more. A parade will take place on June 29. Entertainment has been scheduled throughout the event. Among those performing will be Josh Christina, Mark Bray and the Steel Soul Cowboys, The Floating Anchors, and Foggy Hollow Bluegrass Band. A live radio broadcast has also been scheduled for June 29. St. James Lutheran Church, 2335 Cramer Road, Brogue, has announced its upcoming activities. The Tent Troupe, a traveling summer tent theater troupe composed of students in ninth through 12th grades, will present two performances in the St. James Picnic Woods on Friday, June 28. The events are part of the group’s 45th road tour, which includes drama performances and service projects in Pennsylvania and western Maryland. At 2 p.m. the troupe will perform “Stuart Little” for youths of all ages. At 7:30 p.m., the group will stage a performance titled “Grimm Brothers Spectaculathon.” Admission to the shows is

The South Central York County Senior Center, 150 E. Main St., New Freedom, will host upcoming activities. Individuals must be members of the center to participate in the center’s activities. To become a member, interested readers may stop by the center and sign up, and they should bring a driver’s license or other photo ID card. WellSpan Launches New Record System WellSpan Philhaven has begun the process of launching a new electronic health record system that will help to transform the way it delivers behavioral health care across the region. Beginning in mid-May, the regional behavioral health organization was slated to transition to an advanced record system, starting with its Mount Gretna-based inpatient units, lab, pharmacy, patient access, and registration, among other services. Its outpatient services in Dauphin, Lancaster, and Lebanon counties are slated to adopt the system in stages through the end of the year. WellSpan Philhaven locations in York and Adams counties and its inpatient unit at WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital in Lancaster County have already adopted the new system. The system, a product of Epic - a national health care software firm based in Wisconsin - will allow patients to more easily connect with their care team. It also will allow for better coordination of patients’ care across WellSpan’s locations in central Pennsylvania.
