Early Registration Opens For SummerQuest Waltemyer-Phillips Early registration has opened for York County Libraries’ 2019 SummerQuest, “A Universe of Stories.” To register children, readers may visit http://summer quest.yorklibraries.org. The free program is geared for children from birth to age 18 and will run from Saturday, June 1, to Sunday, Aug. 18. This year’s SummerQuest will explore the universe through hundreds of family-friendly activities. Children only need a free York County Libraries card to participate.

After children are preregistered, they may pick up their SummerQuest packets at one of the three kickoff events on June 1.

Children are encouraged to bring their library cards. The kickoff events, featuring free entertainment and activities, will take place from 10 a.m. to noon at Richard Nixon Park on Nixon Drive in York; Guthrie Memorial Library, 2 Library Place, Hanover; and Dover Township Community Center, 3700 Davidsburg Road, Dover.

Each location will have its own roster of activities. Highlights at Richard Nixon Park will include

traveling magician Papa Tater, donated prizes to encourage stay active over the summer Jeri Jones and his sun scope, children to keep reading and to months. therapy dogs, face painting by Anna Lipinski and York Bubble Lady Debbie Flaum. Guthrie Memorial Library festivities will include a hula hoop demonstration by Lucy Brice at 10:15 a.m. and a demonstration by the Capital City Jedi Knights at 11:15 a.m.

In addition, strolling magician Marc Charisse, the Hanover fire and police departments, the York County Sheriff’s Office and therapy dogs will all be present as part of the event. At the Dover Township Community Center, the celebration will include local author MJ McCloskey, strolling magician Michael Thomas, 911 Command Center and a balloon sculpture. In addition, community partners, including FOCUS, Safe Kids, GO York! and the Master Watershed Stewards, will be present along with food vendors. All locations will have SummerQuest packets of goodies, information and giveaway drawing tickets ready for York Bubble Lady Debbie Flaum will be among the entertainpickup. Registration on-site will ers appearing at York County Libraries’ SummerQuest kickoff celebrations on Saturday, June 1. Children may meet Flaum also be available.

Ashley Waltemyer of Airville and Adam Phillips of Airville, along with their parents, have announced their engagement.

The bride-elect is the daughter of Harold and Dawnnette Waltemyer of Brogue. She graduated from Red Lion Area Senior High School in 2004 and from Drexel University in 2015, and she received a master’s degree in nursing leadership. She is employed

by WellSpan in York.

Mr. Phillips is the son of Duane and Jacquelyn Phillips of Athens. He graduated from Athens Area High School in 2007 and from Penn State Altoona in 2011 with a bachelor’s degree in electromechanical

engineering technology. He is employed by Tola Industries in York.

An Oct. 12 wedding is planned.

Event Will Showcase Vintage Vehicles More than 3,000 specialty vehicles will be on hand at the York Expo Center, 334 Carlisle Ave., York, from Friday, May 31, through Sunday, June 2, for the 46th annual Street Rod Nationals East. This will be the 39th time the vintage car show has been held in York, and all-time highs for participants and spectaculars are expected. A large part of the York Expo Center will be utilized for the event, as well as most of the buildings, which will house manufacturer and dealer displays and other attractions.

The host organization, National Street Rod Association (NSRA), defines a street rod as a modernized vintage vehicle that must be of pre-1949 manufacture. These vehicles are equipped with the latest options available on the newest model vehicles, including but not limited to brakes, air conditioning, cruise control, and tilt steering wheels.

Most of the vehicles attending have an updated engine and drive train in order to safely maintain the speeds traveled by more modern vehicles.

The event will also include muscle cars: factory-produced

high-horsepower machines from the 1960s, ’70s, and ’80s, along with the classic cars of the 1950s.

The NSRA Street Rod Nationals East will feature a mix of old and new vehicles, and the national gathering will boast a wide variety of vintage automobiles.

The event is open to the public, and spectators may walk up to the vehicles to check them out up close. There is an admission fee, which will be discounted for children ages 6 to 12, senior citizens age 60 and up with ID, military personnel with ID, and NSRA members with a current membership card. Children under age 6 may attend for free.

The event will again include a Pinstripe Jamboree and Charity Auction, during which pinstriping, airbrushing, and hand-lettering artists from around the United States will combine to raise money for Make-A-Wish. The Street Rod Nationals East will also include games, activities, and live music.

The event will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on May 31 and on Saturday, June 1, and it will be open from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on June 2. Additional information is available at www.nsra-usa.com.

Fire Company Awards Memorial Scholarship Citizens Volunteer Fire Company of Fawn Grove has established a memorial scholarship in memory of fallen firefighter Denny Devoe. Devoe was a member of Citizens Volunteer Fire Company as well as a professional firefighter for the city of Harrisburg.

The scholarship of $500 will be awarded to a junior or regular member applicant who is enrolled in an institution of higher learning. The selection committee

consists of the chief, president, and chairperson of the trustees or their designate.

Joe Devilbiss, scholarship coordinator, indicated that this year’s scholarship was awarded to Hailey Bankert. Hailey is the daughter of Chuck and Kim Bankert of New Park. Upon graduating from Kennard-Dale High School, Hailey plans to attend Harford Community College and pursue a career in pediatric nursing.

State Reps. Stan Saylor and Mike Jones will co-host a REAL ID informational event on Thursday, June 6, at 6:30 p.m. in the cafeteria at Red Lion Junior High School, 200 Country Club Road, Red Lion. On all days the Heritage Village is open, visitors may also stop by the A.M. Grove Store, the mill, and the grain elevator to chat with costumed docents. The museum highlights the central role the railroad played in every aspect of life in the early 20th century.

The Ma & Pa Railroad Heritage Village will open for its summer season on Sunday, June 2, from 1 to 5 p.m. Trains will depart at 15 minutes after each hour.

The site has recovered from flooding that took place on Aug. 31, 2018. The excursion rail line sustained severe damage due to flood waters, and the storm washed out hundreds of feet of track and a bridge. Two additional bridges along the 3.6-mile line endured substantial damage.

Volunteers and a contractor worked the past eight months clearing the track, making necessary repairs and, in some cases, rebuilding entire sections. All told, the workers restored more than 900 feet of track and bridges. Visitors this summer will again be able to enjoy the scenic train ride from Muddy Creek Forks to just south of Laurel.

All of the museum’s traditional special events will return, including the Early American Autos Day on Sunday, June 30. Other events include Made in America Tours on

Fawn Grove Olde Tyme Days will present a quilt display as part of the event scheduled for Friday, June 28, through Sunday, June 30, at the Old Fairgrounds. The theme for this display will be quilts that were given away via drawings during the last 30 years of the event. Also, quilts can be displayed in memory of loved ones who have passed away over the past 30 years, and a photo can be displayed with the quilt. In its third year, the York County “No Excuses: Youth Traffic Safety” Billboard Design Contest invited York County high school students who have a strong belief in traffic safety and who want to make a difference among their peers to enter. For this campaign, teenagers were approached through their high school faculty and administration to design a billboard that targeted one or more of the following traffic safety messages: discourage distracted driving, encourage seat belt use, and/or discourage aggressive/reckless driving.

The winning design was created by four students from Northern High School. Those students are Jack Phipps, Ryan Allen, Reid Weber, and Ian Hall. The winning entry addresses

both distracted driving and distracted pedestrians. The four students are featured in the actual design. Their entry was the favorite among all the student judges.

Northern High School will receive a $1,000 mini-grant to be used toward traffic safety programming. All four of the designers will each receive $100 for his contribution to the winning design.

This billboard was displayed along I-83 North, just south of Exit 32 (Newberrytown), during the month of April - National Distracted Driving Awareness Month. The site was chosen because it was identified as being a high-incidence roadway for crashes involving teenage drivers, according to PennDOT crash data analysis.

The second-place design was created by Neharika Noor and Ally Sipe, two students from Central York High School. Central will receive a $500 mini-grant to be used for traffic safety programming. Although the secondplace design was not to be made into a billboard, it was to be used extensively in other media, including social media.

Judges for the contest came from two groups: 1) professionals and experts in the field of traffic safety, marketing, planning departments, and media, and 2) high school students for their peer perspective. The student judging results weighed heavily in determining the winning entry, because they are the target audience and advocates.

Church, 1784 Woodbine Road, Airville, will host its Rural Life Sunday on June 2. The service will take place at 9:30 a.m. outdoors, weather permitting.

Attendees should bring lawn chairs. The church will thank God for the opportunity and ability to tend the Earth, from mowing grass and gardening to full-scale farming. The Gracemen will provide gospel bluegrass music.

New this year, attendees are invited to drive a tractor of any make and model to church. Tractor parking will be available in the grass along the driveway next to the Lord’s Acres. The regular parking lot will be reserved for automobiles. Tractors should be onsite and parked by 9:20 a.m. so

Pastor Beth will bless the tractors and those who operate them. Following the service, a cookout meal will be available in the social hall at noon. Meat, beverages, and place settings will be supplied. Attendees should bring a dish to share. No desserts are needed, as fresh strawberries and ice cream will be provided.

The York County Area Agency on Aging (YCAAA) is seeking volunteers for its Friendly Visitor and Financial Counselor programs. There are needs throughout York County.

A volunteer friendly visitor is someone who is willing to share an hour or two each week with a homebound older adult. These visits offer an opportunity for social contact, whether spent reading, writing letters, playing cards or board games, or just chatting.

Financial counselors visit older adults on a regular basis and assist them with budgeting, balancing a checkbook, paying

Castriota Receives Award Louie Castriota, founder and chairman of the board of Leg Up Farm in York, has been awarded the Rite Aid Foundation’s KIDCHAMP Award for his vision and commitment to provide children with special needs a comprehensive, convenient and centralized location to receive specialized therapy. In recognition of his service, Castriota received a $10,000 donation to Leg Up Farm from the Rite Aid Foundation and gift cards during a special ceremony at Leg Up Farm.

Leg Up Farm is a nonprofit therapy center for infants, children, adolescents and young adults up to the age of 21 with special needs.

The center combines a state-ofthe-art medical setting with a child-friendly environment that caters to both children and their families. Leg Up Farm provides comprehensive therapies all under one roof by bringing therapists of different specialties together to create customized programs with a team approach.

The foundation created the KIDCHAMP Award in 2017 to recognize individuals in communities served by Rite Aid. Winners have made a meaningful difference in the lives of youths by advocating for their health and wellbeing, championing education and academic growth and creating safe environments for children and teenagers to live and grow.
