The Blue Star Memorial Highway marker was installed in September 2018 by the GTGC of the Red Lion area. Honoring the past and present Armed Forces of the United States, the Blue Star Memorial Marker program of the National Garden Clubs Inc. began in 1945 and is responsible for markers extending across the United States. The GTGC purchased the marker, and placement was made in cooperation with PennDOT, District 8, York County, and the Garden Club Federation of Pennsylvania. The public is invited to attend the free event. The York County Area Agency on Aging (YCAAA), in conjunction with the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, will again offer the Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program to eligible York County seniors. The program provides $20 in vouchers to eligible seniors to buy fresh fruit and vegetables from participating local farm markets. York County residents are eligible to participate if they are age 60 or older by Tuesday, Dec. 31, and have a 2019 total gross annual household income at or below $23,107 for a single person or $31,284 for a couple. All income is included when calculating total gross income. Proof of age and York County residency must be presented to obtain vouchers. A couple may each receive a voucher if their combined total income is within the income requirements. 2019 proxy forms are required for eligible seniors authorizing someone else to pick up the vouchers for them. YCL Plans Community Bark For Life Of York Event Set Conversations York County Libraries (YCL) will continue the Community Conversations series at four library locations. Led by Robert Lambert, YCL president, the event will provide a forum for community members to share what they need from their libraries. In turn, Lambert will update residents about the projects and strategic initiatives that the library system is implementing to address community needs. To fuel this year’s Community Conversations dialogue, Lambert is seeking answers from attendees to the several questions: “What do you love about your library?” and “What would 100% success look like for your library?” and “What would it take to get your library there?” and “How can York County Libraries walk alongside you in your journey in life and learning?” A report summarizing what is learned will be shared with the public online at the end
of the year. Information gleaned through past public discussions led by Lambert have influenced library strategic plans. The 2019 Community Conversations are scheduled on several dates and times. Sessions will be held on Thursday, May 23, and Tuesday, Nov. 19, at Dover Area Community Library, 3700-3 Davidsburg Road, Dover; on Thursdays, June 6 and Nov. 21, Paul Smith Library of Southern York County, 80 Constitution Ave., Shrewsbury; on Tuesday, Sept. 24, at Guthrie Memorial Library, 2 Library Place, Hanover; and on Wednesday, Sept. 25, at Kaltreider-Benfer Library, 147 S. Community members will come together to honor and celebrate the lifelong contributions of canine caregivers to cancer patients at the third annual American Cancer Society Bark For Life of York event on Sunday, May 19, at Canine Meadows in John Rudy Park from noon to 3 p.m. The park is located at 400
Mundis Race Road, York. The celebration will include a noncompetitive walk for dogs and their owners to raise funds and awareness in the fight against cancer. The event will also include more than 30 different vendors, all of which will bring goodies. A variety of games and activities will be available for
dogs. The first 25 people through the door will receive goodie bags, and music will be provided by a disc jockey. Admission is free, but attendees are encouraged to give donations at the door. Bark For Life of York is part of the American Cancer Society Relay For Life movement, a peer-to-peer fundraising event to save lives from cancer. At Relay For Life events, participants celebrate people who have been touched by cancer, remember loved ones lost, and take action for lifesaving change. Funds raised help the American Cancer Society attack cancer in dozens of ways, such as developing therapies, building supportive communities, providing resources, and deploying activists to raise awareness.
Community members and their canine companions may participate in Bark For Life of York on Sunday, May 19, at Canine Meadows in John Rudy Park. Proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society.

Libraries Offer Food For Fines Program York County Libraries will make a trade with library members who have late fees through its Food for Fines program. Through Friday, May 31, York County Libraries will reduce a library cardholder’s late fees by one dollar for each nonperishable item the cardholder donates at one of the libraries. The food drive provides members with a way to erase their late fees and help feed hungry community members at the same time. Food collected during the month will be distributed to area food banks and organizations across York County. All food donations should be nonperishable items in cans, boxes, bags, or pouches. In the past, individuals have donated items such as cereal, soup, rice, beans, macaroni and cheese, juice, peanut butter, and canned meats like tuna, chicken, and salmon that do not require refrigeration prior to opening. The libraries will not accept out-of-date food or dented or rusted cans. The program applies to late fees only and does not cover items that have been lost. Food will be collected at multiple locations and donated to the local food pantries indicated. Free Vessel Exams Posted The local Coast Guard Auxiliary, York Flotilla 19-05, will offer free vessel exams and safe boater information to the public on Saturday, May 18, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Gander Outdoors, 725 Town Center Drive, York. Vessel exams are voluntary checks of onboard equipment and boating knowledge. There are no enforcement actions or fines. The goal is to increase awareness and readiness to make people safer on the water.
All types of boats are welcome, including kayaks and canoes, jon boats, bass boats, sail boats, pontoons, and power boats. All vessels that pass the exam will receive a sticker that can be displayed on the boat. Additionally, informative and safe boating pamphlets, including coloring books for children, will be available at no cost. “Shrek the Musical” will be presented at the Eichelberger Performing Arts Center, 195 Stock St., Hanover, on Saturday, May 18, at 7 p.m. and on Sunday, May 19, at 2 p.m. This is the second time in the last five years that Pennsylvania Theatrical Arts by Brittany Stevens (PATABS) will present this musical. The production will feature a cast of more than 50 performers from the Hanover, York, Adams County and northern Maryland areas ranging in age from 7 to 49. While many of the fairy tale creatures and citizens of Duloc will be portrayed by students in the PATABS studio, the cast is rounded out by many local adult actors. Leading the show as Shrek will be Chuck Lambert from York. Lambert lived in Hanover for 10 years, during which time he was the founding producing artistic director at the Eichelberger Performing Arts Center during its inception and its
first three theatrical seasons. Joshua Rikas of Hanover has been cast as Donkey. Rikas most recently performed with PATABS as Scuttle in “The Little Mermaid” last season. The cast also features Shea Cooper of Hanover as Princess Fiona. Cooper is a student at South Western High School in Hanover. Her father, Douglas D. Cooper, is also part of the cast as Lord Farquaad, and doubling up as Ogre Fiona will be Priscilla Staub, also of Hanover. All three performers are regulars with PATABS productions. Supporting the cast will be a live orchestra of 10 musicians led by conductor Kamryn Furlow and accompanist Michael Frock. The show will feature a set designed by William Stevens, Tara Setliff and Heather Green. The technical director for the show is Douglas Reese. Makeup special effects are being produced by Kraig Sturtz and Priscilla Staub. The Tony, Olivier and Drama
Desk award-winning musical “Shrek the Musical” is based on the animated motion picture and William Steig’s book “Shrek!” The musical was produced on Broadway in 2008, followed by a national touring production. The book and lyrics are by David Lindsay-Abaire, and the music is by Jeanine Tesori. “Shrek the Musical” is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI). All authorized performance materials are also supplied by MTI. Separate ticket fees have been set for adults and for children. VBS Kickoff Class To Hold Event Monthly Slated Luncheon
Grant Will Offer Aid To Veterans 3P Ride Inc. received a $50,000 Veterans Trust Fund grant for veterans’ transportation to medical care for a total of five central Pennsylvania counties, including York County. 3P Ride is the 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization formed by rabbittransit. While some veterans’ transportation exists, the grant allows for an expansion into Adams, Dauphin, Cumberland, and Columbia counties. The Veterans’ Trust Fund grant was awarded to 29 Pennsylvania organizations that
they wish. They should wear good walking shoes, as the ground is rugged. Community members are also invited to visit the Heritage Museum of New Freedom when it is open on the first Sunday of each month from 1 to 4 p.m. Anyone interested in ordering an engraved brick must submit their order by Monday, Sept. 30. The Teaching Museum for the Fiber Arts and Textiles, 12637 Mount Olivet Road, Felton, will host an open house from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 18, and Sunday, May 19. The museum, at Shady Pines Farm, comprises historic display rooms with antique equipment that is used to teach classes in a variety of fiber arts, such as knitting, spinning, weaving, felting and sewing. The event will feature animals, including alpacas, sheep, miniature horses, a miniature donkey, and border collies. At the entrance is a newly created fairy house, made from an old tree that needed to come down. The base was preserved and carved by a local chainsaw carving artist. The gift shop will offer birds hand-felted from wool and alpaca fibers, along with an array of felting supplies and kits for all skill levels, including beginners. The shop also offers knitted, woven, and crocheted items, as well as roving, yarn, and advice from staff. The shop is a business run by student volunteers from the farm’s youth program, and proceeds help enable the museum to teach the history of the fiber arts and textiles through hands-on demonstrations and classes for people of all ages and abilities. Instructors will demonstrate their art in hand spinning, knitting, crocheting, wet
and dry felting, weaving and sewing. Visitors may sign up for classes, with the help of instructors who will recommend the right class for each skill level. Homeschoolers, children’s groups, businesses, and community organizations can also find information about using the facility for their meetings and programs. The historic farmstead dates back to 1750. The museum occupies the farm’s 18th-century barn. The first floor focuses on fiber, including wool and alpaca fiber; local history; and a display of antiques. The Fiber Room also serves as a classroom. In the middle reception area,
different types of looms are displayed. Visitors may follow the vintage sewing machines upstairs to the Textile Room, where they may try out antique sewing machines and accessories. Photos and other displays illustrate the development of fiber arts and textiles through the centuries. The museum is an outreach project of Y.O.U.T.H. Program Inc. The farm is located near Winterstown and is just north of Shrewsbury. The center offers a movie and popcorn once a month. A podiatrist visits every nine weeks, and a nurse stops by once a month to conduct blood pressure checks. A jewelry making class is also planned. Nine juniors and seniors from Red Lion Area Senior High School graduated from the firstever Electricians Boot Camp at York Electrical Institute. The students completed a six-week program that introduced them to the electrical industry and careers in the electrical trade. Students learned basic electrical theory, tools and materials of the trade, basic wiring methods, and blueprint reading. The program culminated with a capstone project where students designed and built their own electrical circuit. Tyler received a monetary prize, a certificate, a letter of recognition, a calendar showcasing all the 2018-19 winners and a laminated copy of his poster. He was honored at a ceremony at the State Capitol in Harrisburg.
