York Junior Symphony Orchestra

Patricia O’Brien, York Junior Symphony Orchestra board president, answered the following questions:

musicians, selected by audition, and is comprised of full string, woodwind, brass, and percussion sections.

We perform at least two public concerts annually, one in the fall and another in the spring. Occasionally, special performances for competition and demonstration are added to the group’s itinerary.

YJSO members gain valuable skills in cooperation, discipline, and tolerance as well as the enhancement of each member’s confidence, personal growth, and social skills. We also partner with educators, parents, and other community members to increase the exposure of the performing arts in York County.

What is the mission of the York Junior Symphony Orchestra? How does the organization work to achieve its goals?

Funds raised through Give Local York will be used by the YJSO to fund all programs and operations of our organization.

Through this money, the YJSO is able to offer a high-caliber musical program to York County’s youngest musicians. The YJSO serves as the foundation upon which many other musical organizations in York County are built, with many of its musicians continuing their musical education Where will the funds raised through and performance with other community Give Local York be directed? organizations.

YJSO continues to provide the youngest musicians in our community the opportunity to develop their musical skills by performing with a full symphonic orchestra, an opportunity not available in all school settings. The YJSO continues to partner with educators, parents, and other community members to increase the exposure of the performing arts in York County.

York County’s Second Annual Give Day Is May 3 Give Local York, the 24-hour Give Day for York County, will return on Friday, May 3. Last year’s Give Local York event raised $1.478 million for 211 nonprofit organizations in just 24 hours.

This year, 320 organizations whose work benefits York County residents have registered to partici-

pate in Give Local York.

On May 3, from midnight to 11:59 p.m., people may visit www.givelocalyork.org from any computer, smartphone, or device to donate to any of the hundreds of local organizations participating. The goal for this year’s give is $3 million.

Dollars raised that day will be stretched by a pool of $335,000.

The stretch pool serves as a percentage match for participating organizations. Additionally, organizations have the opportunity to win more than $22,000 in prizes on Give Day. On May 3, York County will be

transformed into a communitywide celebration of generosity.

Give Local York activities will take place all over York County, with nonprofits working together to host events from Dillsburg to Delta and Hanover to Hellam and everywhere in between. The events are free and open to the public.

What are the organizations’s goals for 2019?

This season marks the 25th anniversary of our music director and conductor, Mrs. Kathleen Yeater, and the YJSO will continue its tradition of excellence in classical music under Mrs. Yeater’s tutelage. In 2019, the YJSO will pursue its goals of outreach, opportunity, and partnership. With two concerts a year and various performances in the community by the String Octet, the YJSO offers a high level of musical performance to the community. The

The center will celebrate all May birthdays with cake. Doug will be available to assist with computer issues after lunch. Pinochle will be played at noon.

Hospice & Community Care’s mission is to provide personalized care and comfort to help patients and families live better with serious illness through end of life. We provide different levels of care based on a patient’s symptoms and needs. Services include hospice care, palliative care, supportive care, and bereavement support.

Hospice care is medical, emotional, and spiritual support for individuals and

families who are coping with a life-limiting illness. Hospice care focuses on comfort for individuals of all ages with any serious illness who have weeks or months rather than years to live.

Palliative care provides relief from pain and other difficult symptoms from illnesses ranging from cancer to heart and respiratory disease. Palliative Medicine Consultants’ physicians work with a patient’s doctor to treat symptoms, maintain function, and help patients to reach their goals.

Supportive Care helps to prevent and manage the symptoms related to a patient’s illness.

Grief support is provided during and after a loss of a loved one; this support is available to anyone in the community, regardless of whether they were served by Hospice & Community Care.

Hospice & Community Care’s team of experienced nurses, aides, social workers, physicians, chaplains, and counselors work collaboratively to customize their approach to comfort care to meet each patient’s needs.

The Maryland & Pennsylvania Railroad Preservation Society has announced that the entire Ma & Pa Railroad through the Muddy Creek Valley is now passable. After a flood in August 2018, the rail line was closed for repairs over the winter.

The Ma & Pa Railroad through the Muddy Creek Valley is again open for rail traffic after parts of the track were closed due to severe damage sustained in the flash flood of Aug. 31, 2018. The scenic rail line is operated by the Maryland & Pennsylvania Railroad Preservation Society as part of the Ma & Pa Railroad Heritage Village.

In the flood, a 30-foot steel bridge was washed away, two other bridges were damaged, and about 900 feet of track was destroyed. A contractor hired by the preservation society worked through the winter to restore the railroad. Most of the line was

open in time for the society to support the regular trout stocking of Muddy Creek by Trout Unlimited. In fact, the first train to run on the north end of the line since the flood was a fish train.

On April 17, the final rails were bolted in place at the foot of Guinston Forge Road just south of Laurel. Some ballasting and final adjustment of the track alignment remains to be done, but the entire railroad is now passable. Track repairs are expected to be finished for the season opening of the Ma & Pa Railroad Heritage Village.

The Society has scheduled its annual volunteer day, at which current and new volunteers will receive training to staff the museum at Muddy Creek Forks and operate the railroad. The volunteer day will be held on Saturday, May 4, from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the A.M. Grove General Store at Muddy Creek Forks, 1258 Muddy Creek Forks Road, Airville.

The society’s corps of volunteers welcomes museum visitors with educational historic interpretation, hosts tours and special events, and operates the trains at the Ma & Pa Railroad Heritage Village. Train operators, store clerks, millers, station agents, and other period-specific positions are among the volunteer opportunities. New volunteers are always welcome to participate and become a part of the museum that is open regularly from early June through mid-December.

Historic interpreters provide a glimpse of what life was like during the early 20th century, when Muddy Creek Forks was a busy commercial village centered on the railroad.

Groups To Hold Native Plant Sale In York MAEscapes and the Penn State Master Gardeners will host the 23rd annual Native Plant Sale on Saturday, May 11, at the York County Annex, 112 Pleasant Acres Road, York, from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., rain or shine.

Plant growers from around the region will offer a large selection of native plants for sale, including trees and shrubs suited for the local area and many hard-tofind plants. Heirloom vegetable

seedlings and herbs will be offered for sale by the Horn Farm Center.

Master Gardeners and MAEscapes experts will be on hand to answer gardening questions and help attendees decide on the best plants for their needs. Breakfast and lunch items will be available to purchase. New this year, Celtic Wood and Wires will provide musical entertainment.

Eck To Receive Golden Apple St. Joseph School, York, recently announced that Corrinne Eck was selected to receive the Golden Apple Award from the Diocese of Harrisburg through the Donahue Family Foundation. The award symbolizes a professional excellence, leadership, commitment to Catholic values, and devotion to

teaching in Catholic schools.

The Golden Apple Award is given to six teachers and one principal in the Diocese of Harrisburg. The awards will be presented at ceremony on Tuesday, May 7, at the Diocesan Center.

Eck serves as principal and has been on faculty for 14

years. Eck earned her Bachelor of Science in elementary education from Millersville University, with a special education focus. Her administrative certificate was earned from Marywood University, Scranton. She also added autism spectrum disorder endorsement to her certification.

Balance Class Set For Residents The York County Area Agency on Aging will host a free class for York County residents age 60 and older to learn how to manage the risk of falling and increase activity levels. A Matter of Balance emphasizes practical strategies to manage falls.

A Matter of Balance targets older adults who have concerns about falling, have fallen in the past, have restricted their activities because of falling concerns, or are interested in improving balance, flexibility, and strength. Participants will learn to view falls as controllable, set goals for increasing activity, make changes to reduce fall risks at home, and exercise to increase strength and balance.

A class will be held at York Township Park Building, 25 Oak St., York, from 10 a.m. to noon on Mondays and Wednesdays, May 8 to June 5. No class will be held on Monday, May 27.
