Boy Scout Troop 24 and Cub Scout Pack 24 of New Freedom teamed up with a number of Girl Scouts and Brownies to pick up trash along the York County Heritage Rail Trail in New Freedom on April 6. The longtime annual event takes place on the first Saturday of April, when the Scouts clear trash that has accumulated over the winter along the rail trail and adjacent roads. More than 50 Scouts and family members scoured approximately 2.5 miles of the trail from the Maryland state line to Railroad Park. Don Bortner and Neal Taylor of New Freedom Borough helped the Scouts by collecting the bagged trash along the trail with the help of a four-wheeled utility vehicle. This year, for the first time, the Scouts were rewarded for their efforts with a ride back to New Freedom courtesy of Steam Into History. Steam Into History is a nonprofit, educational, charitable organization located in New Freedom.
