Laure Receives Recognition Susquehannock High School teacher Tom Laure has been awarded the Excellence in Education Award from the York Area Down Syndrome Association. Bruce Duncan, father of Kasey Duncan, nominated Laure. Kasey has been in Laure’s class for two years and is now employed at Goodwill. In his nomination, Bruce noted that Laure arranges vocational opportunities and real-world experiences for his students. When commenting on the award, Laure recognized his staff, including Toni Shearer, Christine Thomas, Diane Ingram, and Jennifer Garvey. He also mentioned the administration’s support.

VFW Post 7012 To Hold Egg Hunt The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7012 will sponsor an Easter egg hunt on Saturday, April 13, at 10 a.m. at the New Freedom Community Center, 150 E. Cowboy Church To Hold Events Silver Spurs Cowboy Church has announced its Easter activities and services. On April 14, Palm Sunday, will be a praise and worship service at 1 p.m. at the Lewis Family Farm (Mason-Dixon Game Outfitters), 2200 Channel Road, Pylesville, Md. There will be Communion, and a potluck dinner will follow the service. This will also be the last opportunity to bring
items for the food bank. On Saturday, April 20, will be the sixth annual Easter egg hunt at Hershaull Park, 7677 Church Road, Felton. The egg hunt will begin at 1 p.m., and children age 4 and under will have a special section set aside to look for eggs. After the hunt will be a short praise and worship service, followed by a potluck dinner and games with prizes,
including roping competitions for people of all ages, potato sack races, egg and spoon races, raw egg tossing, and more. Hot dogs will be provided, and those who are able are asked to bring a covered dish to share. An Easter sunrise service, which will include Communion, will be held on Sunday, April 21, at 7 a.m. at the ranch, located at 3231 Warner Road, Brogue.

The South Central York County Senior Center, 150 E. Main St., New Freedom, has announced its upcoming activities. The center serves a hot lunch at 11:30 a.m. each day, and attendees are encouraged to arrive at 11:20 a.m. The center offers a variety of programs during the week. Isometric exercises take place at 9:15 a.m. each day, tai chi is held at 10:15 a.m. each day, and Stretch Yoga takes place at 9 a.m. on Mondays. Line dancing is offered at 10 a.m. on Wednesdays. Center attendees may also use exercise equipment and walk in the gym every morning. Our goal is enriching York County communities and countryside through the development of a network of public, multiuse trails. We achieve this goal by building and expanding upon the Heritage Rail Trail, the Hanover Trolley Trail, and other multiuse trails in the County of York.
Approximately how many staff members and volunteers are involved? One staff member and more than 50 regular volunteers. Did this organization participate in the inaugural Give Local York last year? Yes. With very minimal effort, we raised nearly $4,000, a great boost to our operating budget and ability to advance our trailbuilding projects. What are the organization’s goals for Give Local York 2019? Our goal is $5,000, and we have developed a special theme, “Meet Friends on the Rail Trail.” The theme is being promoted on our Facebook page, specially designed T-shirts and doggie bandannas, and a
super great video. We are also hosting a grand opening ceremony for a new section of the rail trail the day before Give Local York and a cycling event into the city of York by Gung Ho Bikes on the evening of May 3.

School Board Appoints New CEO The York Academy Regional Charter School’s board of trustees met on Feb. 25 and took action to appoint Angela Sugarek to the position of chief executive officer (CEO), effective Monday, July 1. The school’s current CEO, Dr. Dennis Baughman, will retire on Sunday, June 30. Sugarek earned a Bachelor of Science in history and mathematics from Eastern New Mexico University and a Master of Educational Administration from the University of Texas at Austin. Since 2013, she has served as a principal in the Houston Independent School District, working with In-
ternational Baccalaureate (IB) programming at the Durham Elementary School and the James Hogg Middle School. She was honored as the Texas PTA Elementary Principal of the Year in 2015. She said she is enthusastic about relationship and community building, working with data, forming pathways to academic excellence and supporting her faculty. The York Academy Regional Charter School is a nonprofit, tuition-free public charter school that educates nearly 800 diverse students in kindergarten through ninth grade via the IB curriculum. Founded
in 2011, the Academy is chartered by Central York, York City and York Suburban school districts. Students from eight other districts are also represented. In August 2018, York Academy opened an Upper School in downtown York. Each year, a grade level will be added until the Academy offers classes for students in kindergarten through 12th grade at the beginning of the 2021-22 school year.

Prizes will be awarded for the top three entries as determined by celebrity judges. YWCA York will host its 15th annual Y-Tri (Sprint Triathlon) on Sunday, June 23, at 7:30 a.m. at Lake Redman, 296 Hess Farm Road, York. The event will feature a 500-yard outdoor lake swim, 15mile road bike ride, and a 5K (3.1mile) outdoor run. Registration is available at www.ywcayork.org. Registrants may participate as individuals or as teams. Everyone is welcome to attend to cheer on the athletes.
