Catholic schools in the York area kicked off Catholic Schools Week by helping the community while celebrating. Instead of a fee being charged at the annual Battle of the Buildings event, canned goods were collected for the Catholic Harvest Food Pantry. Students from St. John the Baptist, St. Joseph Dallastown, St. Joseph York, St. Patrick, St. Rose of Lima, and York Catholic collected more than 21,000 canned goods, or about 12,500 pounds. Address: c/o The Markets at Shrewsbury, 12025 Susquehanna Trail, Glen Rock, PA 17327 Phone: 717-235-6611 Email: PennMarIrish@gmail.com Website: https://pennmaririshfestival.com/ Social Media: www.facebook.com/ PennMarIrish/, www.twitter.com/ PennMarIrish/ Mary Yeaple, president, who has been volunteering with the festival for 19 years, answered the following questions: What is the mission of Penn-Mar Irish Festival? How does the organization work to achieve its goals? Our mission is to promote Celtic heritage in our region through an annual festival featuring traditional and contemporary Irish music, Irish dancers, vendors with a variety of Irish goods, a Celtic Cul-

tural Arts Workshop tent, a children’s activity area, and more. This year’s event is scheduled for Saturday, June 15. Approximately how many volunteers are involved? We are an all-volunteer organization with a dozen committee members. We rely on the help of nearly 100 volunteers during the week of the festival. Did Penn-Mar Irish Festival participate i n the inaugural Give Local York last year? Yes, we participated last year and enjoyed the experience. We had special events downtown and at The Markets at Shrewsbury, where the festival is located, and we plan to expand on these events this year, What are the organization’s goals for 2019? For 2019, we are adding two new internationally-known performers: Dave Curley

(from Ireland) and the Steel City Rovers (from Canada). Each year, we feature some of the best Irish music in the region and also extend an invitation to bands from farther away to enhance our lineup and introduce high-caliber entertainment.

Where will funds raised through Give Local York be directed? Funds raised through Give Local York will be used toward enhancing our entertainment lineup and providing additional seating and shade options for our guests.

Across the Pond, an award-winning Gettysburg-based group, has been among the performers at the annual Penn-Mar Irish Festival.

During the extreme heat of summer and the ice and snow of winter, there is always the possibility of disruptions in electricity to power heat and/or air conditioning in homes and businesses. These disruptions may go on for hours and even days. Although everyone should be prepared for emergencies and to sustain themselves for up to 72 hours, this is not always possible, especially for the elderly, those with access and functional needs, or families with small children. York County Local Municipal Emergency Management Coordinators (EMCs) look for organizations within their individual municipalities that may be able to provide cooling stations and/or heating comfort stations.
