Historical Society Will Present Lecture

The Stewartstown Historical Society will offer a lecture on Wednesday, March 18, at 7:30 p.m. at Stewartstown United Methodist Church, 26 S. Main St., Stewartstown, in the fellowship hall.

Dr. Donald W. Linebaugh will present “Revealing ‘Patterson’s Pleasure’: A Late 18th-Century Log Farmhouse in Hopewell Township, PA,� which will examine research into the James Patterson (later McElwain) property and farmhouse located near the intersection of Plank Road and Route 24. The house, an important early survival from the founding of Stewartstown, was recently destroyed to make way for a new housing development.

Linebaugh is dean of the School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation at the University of Maryland.

James Patterson, a Revolutionary War officer, built the house in the late 18th century and lived on and farmed the land until his death in the late 1830s; the property remained in the Patterson family until the 1880s. Utilizing a forensic architectural approach, Linebaugh will discuss the property’s history and the evolution of the two-story log farmhouse. Both James Patterson and his son Edie Patterson were successful distillers, and Edie ran the hotel at the corner of Plank Road and Route 24.

Railway Sets Spring Excursions Senior Center Posts Schedule Northern Central Railway of York, 2 W. Main St., New Freedom, will host its first spring excursions on Sunday, March 22. The events will feature a recently purchased EMD GP9 diesel locomotive, which pushes and pulls the coaches. The locomotive was purchased from a private owner in Deferiet, N.Y., and arrived on Dec. 13, 2019.

Two excursions will take place on March 22. The 1-hour

Glen Rock Express will depart at 11:30 a.m. The Hanover Junction Flyer, a 2.5-hour ride, will leave the station at 1 p.m.

Passengers should arrive 30 minutes prior to departure.

Eggspecially Fun Bunny Run Posted Northern Central Railway of York, 2 W. Main St., New Freedom, will host the Eggspecially Fun Bunny Run on Saturdays, April 4 and 11; Sunday, April 5; and Friday, April 10. The 40minute ride will be held at 10 and 11:30 a.m. Additional rides at 1 and 2:30 p.m. will also be offered on April 11.

Passengers will have an opportunity to visit and take photos with the Easter Bunny while rid-

ing the train. Upon returning to the station in New Freedom, children will be invited to participate in an egg hunt.

Children will need to bring their own basket.

Mahjong will be played at noon. The Level 2 Drawing class will start at 12:30 p.m.

The board of directors will meet at 3 p.m.

On Tuesday, March 17, Barb’s aerobics will be held in the fellowship hall from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Jessica Buck will entertain with Irish music at 10:30 a.m. Center visitors are invited to dress in green and bring a green dessert to share in celebrating St. Patrick’s Day. The pinochle players will meet at noon, with more players sought. Doug will be available to offer computer assistance after lunch.

On Wednesday, March 18, Barb’s aerobics class will be held in the fellowship hall from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Mary Ellen will be available to assist with painting ceramics. The bridge club will meet at noon, with those who would like to learn to play or who already know how to play invited to attend. Various table games will be available throughout the day. The card party will meet at 1 p.m.

The York Kennel Club, along with the Delaware County and Lancaster kennel clubs, will present the annual Celtic Classic all-breed dog show from Wednesday, March 11, to Sunday, March 15. Events will start each day at 8 a.m. at the York Expo Center, 334 Carlisle Ave., York.

Approximately 1,800 entries will be on hand each day from March 11 through Friday, March 13, with approximately 3,000 entries on Saturday, March 14, and on March 15. There will also be more than 20 specialty breed shows and educational seminars during the Classic. Dog show tours will be offered daily,

Canine Good Citizen testing will take place on March 11, and Wicket and Scales presentations will be given daily by American Kennel Club representative James Mitchell.

Living Well With Diabetes Slated York County Area Agency on Aging will offer free diabetes self-management workshops called “Living Well With Diabetes.” Adults age 60 and older living with diabetes or pre-diabetes, as well as caregivers age 60 and older caring for someone with diabetes, are eligible to participate in the workshops.

The free workshops will be held from 9 to 11:30 a.m. on Tuesdays, March 17 to 31; Monday, April 6; and Tuesdays, April 14 and 21. All sessions will take place at South Central Senior Center, 150 E. Main St., New Freedom.

Developed by the Self-Management Resource Center, formerly Stanford University Patient Education Program, this health promotion program provides tools for managing

diabetes, dealing with difficult emotions, and breaking the symptom cycle that comes with the disease. The program introduces participants to self-management tools like healthy eating, monitoring blood sugar, action planning, and dealing with difficult emotions, among others. The workshops will be taught by certified instructors through the agency.

There is no charge for the workshops. A companion book, “Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions, 4th Edition,” and an audio relaxation CD will be provided for all participants. Preregistration is required by calling the senior center at 717235-6060.

Firefighters Raise Funds For MDA During the 2019 MDA Fill the Boot campaign, the members of the Greater Hanover’s Professional Firefighters Association Local 2045 took to the streets to help children and adults with muscular dystrophy, ALS and related life-threatening diseases to live longer and grow stronger.

Through 2019, more than $21,000 was raised to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA).

Firefighters have taken part in MDA’s Fill the Boot tradition for more than 60 years, taking to the streets or storefronts to ask pedestrians, motorists, customers and other passersby to make donations to MDA, thereby joining the fight to find treatments and cures for devastating diseases that take away everyday abilities like walking, talking, hugging and even breathing.

Funds raised help MDA’s efforts to fund groundbreaking research and life-enhancing programs such as state-of-the-art support groups and Care Centers, including the MDA Care Center at Penn State Hershey Medical Center in Hershey. Funds also help send more than 20 local children to MDA Summer Camp at no cost to their families.

YorVoice Competition Scheduled The Cultural Alliance of York County will host its sixth annual singing competition, YorVoice, on Saturday, March 21, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. in the Strand Theatre at the Appell Center for Performing Arts, 50 N. George St., York. The friendly competition will bring the community together for a night filled with musicians.

In the 2019 competition, York College Rock Band took home the title of Live Band Champion, while solo musician Jess Pastelak was awarded Vocal Champion.

2019 runner-up, Jennie Parker, and 2019 People’s Choice Award winner, Teagan Tatcher.

South Central York County Senior Center, 150 E. Main St., New Freedom, has posted its upcoming activities. The center serves a hot lunch on weekdays at 11:30 a.m. Members are encouraged to arrive at 11:20 a.m.

Seniors must be members of the center to participate in the activities. Anyone age 60 or over who lives in York County is eligible to become a member of the center. To become a member, participants should bring a driver’s license or photo identification to the senior center. For more information, readers may call the center at 717-235-6060.

The center also has cookbooks available for sale.

The AARP Foundation TaxAide Program will offer a free tax service for people of all ages, especially those age 50 and older. The service is free, and AARP membership is not required. Taxpayers should bring photo identification and proof of the Social Security or ITIN numbers for everyone on the tax return, including dependents.

Bringing last year’s tax return, if available, is also helpful. TaxAide volunteers are able to prepare most personal income tax returns, including those with basic self-employment income.

They are not trained to do business returns, such as corporate, partnership, limited partnership, farm income, or rental income.

Academy Hosts Visitors York Academy Regional Charter School recently hosted representatives from the U.S. Department of Education, York County president commissioner Julie W heeler and Andrew Ramos from the office of Sen. Pat Toomey.

CEO Angela Sugarek led the group on a tour of the Upper School and provided an overview of the International Baccalaureate (IB) and its programs. The visit ended in a discussion with students. Aimee Viana, principal deputy assistant secretary, Department of Education, was interested in learning what the students like most about York Academy and hearing how the IB makes them rethink education.

The students shared their opinions freely.

The York Academy Regional Charter School is a nonprofit,

tuition-free public charter school that educates more than 850 students via the International Baccalaureate curriculum. In addition to academics, it offers art, music, science and design/engineering programming within a small-school environment.

Founded in 2011, the school is chartered by Central York, York City and York Suburban school districts. Students from 11 other districts also attend. Currently, it serves students in kindergarten through 10th grade. Each year a grade level will be added until the school is fully for kindergarten through 12thgrade students in August 2021.

The CPC is York County’s community action agency that empowers individuals and families to move toward self-sufficiency and advocates for change to promote community growth.

The sponsorship agreement makes CPC the beneficiary of the team’s nightly 50/50 charity giveaway and a fundraiser to be conducted during one of the Revolution’s home games.

The one-hour, fully scripted and narrated presentation uses more than 250 picture postcard and archival images to document almost 400 years of American food service history. Long describes nine eras of food service from the first Thanksgiving feast in 1621 to the present. This presentation concludes with a visual tour of nearby surviving roadside diners.
