How does the organization work to achieve its goals? Young Life is a world-class organization for adolescents. Our staff and volunteers enter the world of kids, focusing on what matters to them: fun, adventure, friendship, and a sense of significance. In doing so, we earn the privilege of talking to them about something that we think matters most of all: the truth about God and His love for them. Young Life doesn’t start with a program. It starts with adults who are concerned enough about kids to go to them, on their turf and in their culture, building bridges of authentic friendship. These relationships don’t happen overnight - they take time, patience, trust, and consistency. Address: P.O. Box 577, New Freedom, PA 17349 Phone: 717-347-7176 Email: info@sparrowplace.org Website: www.sparrowplace.org Facebook: @sparrowplaceofyork, www.facebook.com/sparrow placeofyork/ Jan Wilson, executive director/co-founder, who has been with the organization since its inception on Aug. 25, 2017, answered the following questions: What is the mission of Spar row Place? How does the organization work to achieve its goals? Our purpose is to fill a gap and offer a Christian-based, long-term residential restorative program in York County for women between the ages of 18 and 40 who are survivors of domestic sex trafficking or commercial sexual exploitation. Our vision is that when a women leaves our care, she won’t simply survive, walking wounded, but she’ll be equipped with the education, skills, awareness, and self-worth to succeed - whatever that looks and feels like to her. Our focus will be to meet the physical, psychological, emotional, spiritual, and relational needs of each resident. We are currently seeking the gift of a house or land to re-purpose or build a safe residence for multiple survivors and 24/7 staff. We’ve discovered a glaring need for awareness about domestic sex trafficking and its occurrence in our neighborhoods, so we have been actively meeting with business, church, group, and legislative leaders, as well as training at large-group community events. It is our hope that this increase in awareness of human trafficking will propel efforts to expand solutions for victims and survivors. Approximately how many staff members and volunteers are involved? We are a volunteer-run nonprofit

with two highly active cofounders, three additional board members, and 10 or so volunteers. We know this program can only be successful with the help of a large number of volunteers - for example, fundraising; finding, preparing, and maintaining a home; ongoing public awareness; and direct care for our girls. Our goal is to engage the entire community and work in unity. We are actively seeking board members! Did Sparrow Place participate in the inaugural Give Local York last year? This will be our first year for eligibility in GLY. We are looking forward to spreading the word about Sparrow Place in an effort to gain support, but, even more importantly, this is a platform to make the message clear: Human trafficking is occurring in York city and York County and needs to be recognized and reported. What are the organization’s goals for 2019? We will continue to bring human trafficking awareness, education, and prevention to York, but our main priority in 2019 must be to raise money and open a house. We have survivors waiting for us!

Where will funds raised through Give Local York be directed? We know we are making progress against sex trafficking and sexual exploitation, or we wouldn’t be able to sleep at night, but we want to do even more to protect our youths and vulnerable populations. We would like to raise funds to expand our training and prevention efforts. We are looking into a program that blends educational materials with virtual reality technology to deliver an ageappropriate, accurate, and research-backed experience to our communities. We aren’t going to lie: It’s expensive, but we believe it will be well worth the cost. We can use it with middle/high school students and staff, legislators, law enforcement, medical personnel, and really ALL community members. For the dad who doesn’t believe his daught e r w o u l d b e fo o l e d b y a n online predator, this is a way to open his eyes and mind to the realities of grooming and sex trafficking.
