Viette will broadcast live “In the Garden” on March 2 from 8 to 11 a.m. Viette will speak on dealing with changing weather and easy perennial color design on March 1 at 5:30 p.m. and his favorite plants for all-season color on March 2 at 2 p.m. He will bring a limited quantity of daylily roots for attendees.

Butera, York’s international garden speaker, will demonstrate the latest trends in floral art. Garden blogger Weigle will share his knowledge of Zone 6 gardening and will sign copies of his book, “Pennsylvania Month-by-Month Gardening.”

Penn State Master Gardeners will share about current pest threats, attracting butterflies, the importance of indigenous plants, and growing blooms.

Bupp will present new ways to garden smart.

This year’s event will include 80 different exhibitors. Also, PAGSY named the Veterans Memorial Gold Star Healing and Peace Garden in York’s Memorial Park 2019 Charity of the Year.

H.O.P.E., 150 E. Main St., support group for children ages New Freedom, will offer Kids 6 to 12 who have someone in Under Construction (KUC), a their immediate family with cancer. The program is six weeks long and will meet twice a month on select Wednesdays from 6:30 to 8 p.m., beginning in March.

The Pennsylvania Garden Show of York will run from Friday, March 1, to Sunday, March 3, at the York Expo Center. and names the Pennsylvania fallen in the Global War on Terrorism. It is located at 1000 Vander Ave., York. The garden will have an information booth and plant sale in the garden market. Proceeds will benefit Gold Star Garden. The Hall of Gardens will feature landscape companies vying for top honors. Attendees will have the opportunity to view practical landscape ideas and plantings in the gardens and ask designers about the features in the display gardens.

The 27th annual Pennsylvania Garden Show of York (PAGSY), themed “Flowers on Parade,” will take place in Memorial Hall at the York Expo Center, 334 Carlisle Ave., York. The event will run from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, March 1, and Saturday, March 2, and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, March 3.

The event will include walkthrough landscape display gardens and a garden market with flowers, unusual plants, and garden lifestyle items, as well as “Minhwa - Reflections of Traditional Korean Art With Modern Interpretation,” an art exhibit by Jin Young Jeong, an artist from South Korea. She uses traditional paints with mulberry and rice paper as she works in heritage Korean style with a modern interpretation.

“Here Comes the Parade,” a Standard Flower Show within PAGSY by Federated Garden Club (FGC) of Pennsylvania District IV, will take place within the Garden Market Hall and will be evaluated by certified judges from all over the country. FGC includes clubs in York, Lancaster, Lebanon, Cumberland, Dauphin, Fulton, Franklin, Perry, and Adams counties.

The Red Lion Area School District (RLASD) board of school directors has adopted a tax rebate program for qualified seniors age 65 and older, widow/widowers age 50 and older, or permanently disabled persons age 18 and older.

To qualify for the program, an applicant must have owned and

lived in his or her home in the district during 2018, and the applicant’s 2018 household income must be $35,000 or less.

Applications and instructions for mailing in the completed forms are available at several locations, including all RLASD offices, RLASD tax collector

offices, public libraries, Rep. Stan Saylor’s office, and Red Lion Senior Center. An application is also available by visiting www.rlasd.net. Applications and supporting documents are to be submitted to the Red Lion Area School District by Wednesday, May 15.

The Red Lion Area School District, the Dallastown Area School District, the Eastern York School District, and the York Academy will each receive a $35,000 grant to expand computer science classes and teacher training. The funding was made available from the PA Smart Initiative that was included in the state budget

passed in June 2018.

The goal of these targeted grants is to meet the needs of schools that currently have limited to no computer science offerings. These grants are meant to fund teams of educators (four or more) who would like to be trained on ways to implement computer science in

their classrooms.

The funding available for these grants is the result of a $30 million appropriation in the fiscal year 2018-19 General Fund Budget. The Pennsylvania Workforce Development Board provided recommendations and approved the framework for the funding priorities.

On Sunday, March 17, a medium or long hike of 8.5 or 14 miles will be offered at the Standing Stone Trail (STS) to complete the Monument Rock section. Participants will start at the parking area for the Todd Trail, hike up and over the mountain, and eventually meet up with the STS. From there, they will stay on the STS, climbing up to the next ridge to see Monument Rock. Participants should expect steep climbs, rocky terrain, and possible icy/snowy conditions. On Sunday, March 24, a short 4.5-mile hike will be held on Trail 5 at Lake Redman. The trail has some steep climbs but is well maintained. On March 24, a long 9- to 10-mile hike will be offered in Gettysburg National Military Park. Participants will meet at 9 a.m. in parking lot number 3, which is west of the visitor center. Participants will hike a loop trail, passing some of the most significant highlights of the battle. The trails will be paved, grass, and gravel, with some moderate hills. The hike leaders will be Ron Boyer and Darla Stover, and readers may call 717-873-4862.

On Sunday, March 31, a short 5-mile hike will start at the Wrightsville Boat Launch and end at the Moon Dancer Winery parking lot. Hikers will have moderate elevation going through Murphy’s Hollow and Grace Plateau and on to High Point, where there is a 360degree view of the river and surrounding hills. On Sunday, March 3, a medium 6-mile hike will explore the current and future routes of the Mason-Dixon Trail in Hellam Hills. One-third of the hike will be off-trail on uneven and sometimes rocky or muddy terrain, and there will be two stream crossings. How does the organization work to achieve its goals?

York Habitat for Humanity’s mission is to provide safe, decent, affordable, healthy homes for ownership by low-income families in York County. York Habitat has built and rehabbed 133 homes to provide ownership opportunities for families in 34 years of operation.

Approximately how many staff members and volunteers are involved?

Nine full-time and one part-time staff members and more than 2,500 volunteers work on Habitat sites each year.

Where will funds raised through Give Local York be directed?

All of the work done by York Habitat for Humanity is considered part of our ongoing program. Funds raised will go to support specific projects.

How does the organization work to achieve its goals?

The YYSO creates a unique opportunity for elite youth musicians to learn a challenging repertoire with peers, perform in a variety of venues, and expand their perspectives of what it means to be a musician.

Every year we achieve our goals by accepting over 100 musicians from grades nine to 12, representing 14 different schools and homeschooled students from York and Adams counties, to

perform in three concerts per season at various locations in York County. We offer our students the opportunity to progress in their instruments through sectionals with professional musicians, through ensemble opportunities, and by offering summer camp and college scholarships.

Approximately how many staff members and volunteers are involved?

The YYSO is composed of a small team of employees: the interim conductor, Brian Buterbaugh; the facility manager, John Beck; and the administrative coordinator, Roth J. Preap. All of our other volunteers are parents, students, and any persons interested in helping in the organization.

Did this YYSO participate in the inaugural Give Local York last year?

The YYSO did participate in the first Give Local York. The event was very well executed, and we enjoyed the immense energy created through the various nonprofits who participated. The experience was uplifting, and it is

great to have the opportunity to remind everyone about the nonprofits in York that are working to achieve greater things for the York community.

What are the organization’s goals for 2019?

In 2019, the YYSO will launch its 62nd season. In 2019, we are focused on expanding educational opportunities for the students. During our 2019 year, we are piloting three Music Chamber Ensembles - a string ensemble, a wind ensemble, and a brass ensemble - led by professionals musicians in our area who will work with our students to educate them on performing in a small ensemble.

The students will then have a recital on Sunday, May 5, to showcase the music that was made during this pilot.

We then will hopefully launch this program as a year-round opportunity in our 2019-2020 season for the students and start booking our ensembles in local venues to gain more experience in performing.

Where will funds raised through Give Local York be directed?

Funds through Give Local York will be used for our organization’s programs/operations budget. All of our programs and operations have the students in mind to provide the best experience to our students every year.

Explorer Announced As Keynote Speaker Robert Ballard, founder and president of the Ocean Exploration Trust and explorer in residence at the National Geographic Society, will be the keynote speaker for the 2019 annual event hosted by The Manufacturers’ Association. The event will take place on Thursday, April 25, at The Pullo Center at Penn State York, 1031 Edgecomb Ave., York.

Doors for the event will open at 4 p.m., with a general reception and networking time for the public beginning at 4:30 p.m.

The program will begin at 6 p.m. with opening ceremonies and remarks. Ballard’s keynote address will be followed by a brief meet-and-greet and

book-signing opportunity.

Ballard discovered the RMS Titanic in 1985 and has since succeeded in locating numerous other significant shipwrecks, including the German battleship Bismarck, the lost fleet of Guadalcanal, the U.S. aircraft carrier Yorktown, and John F. Kennedy’s boat, the PT-109. The author of numerous books, scientific papers, and articles, he has been featured in several television programs, including “Secrets of the Titanic” and a five-part mini-series, “Alien Deep With Bob Ballard.”

He served in the U.S. Navy for more than 30 years and continues to work with the Office of Naval Research. A pioneer in the

National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) York County all whose lives are affected by mental illness, recognizing that the key concepts of recovery, resiliency, and support are essential in achieving success.

NAMI has different Signature Programs for anyone age 18 and up who has been affected by mental illness. Every program, whether itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a support group, presentation, or course, is offered at no charge so that everyone seeking help will be able to have it. You could be the family member/caregiver of a loved one with the diagnosis or the person with the diagnosis.

Approximately how many staff members and volunteers are involved?

NAMI York County has two paid full-time staff members. We rely heavily on our volunteers, many of whom are trained to facilitate the various NAMI Signature Programs. We currently have about 20 volunteers.

What are the organizationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s goals for 2019?

We will have our 10th annual Mental Health Awareness Walk on Saturday, Oct. 12.

We are trying to make NAMI a household name. There are still way too many people who havenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t heard about us.

Where will funds raised through Give Local York be directed?

Generally, they will go toward the organizationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s programs/ operations, but they can be earmarked to send people to be

trained to facilitate particular NAMI programs or for any project that someone might want us to do in the future.

Ash Wednesday, Clothes Closet Events Set The observation of Lent at St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church, 2335 Cramer Road, Brogue, and St. Paul (Lebanon) Evangelical Lutheran Church, 6955 Ripping Run Road, Felton, will begin with an Ash Wednesday worship service at 7 p.m. at St. James on March 6. Auctioneers Receive Recognition The father-and-son duo of auctioneers Charles L. Wehrly and Scott C. Wehrly, both of Glen Rock, recently received various accolades, as did their associate Shawn Carbaugh.

At the Pennsylvania Farm Show on Jan. 9, Carbaugh placed fourth out of 22 in the Pennsylvania State Bid Calling Contest.

Charles was honored for his years of service by the state’s swine association at the Farm Show on Jan. 4. Charles’ service dates back to the 1950s, showing hogs and being a ringman.

Additionally, at the Pennsylvania Auctioneers Association (PAA) Conference in Harrisburg on Jan. 11, Charles was inducted into the PAA Hall of Fame, along with Harry A. Anderson of Rogers,

Ohio. Induction into the Hall of Fame is the association’s highest honor for its members, and Charles was surprised by his induction. Nevin Rentzell and Harry Bachman presented the award.

While Scott and Charles were on the stage for Charles’ recognition at the convention, Bachman surprised Scott by announcing that he had been named the 2019 Auctioneer of the Year.

According to Scott, this is only the second time that a father and son received such honors in the same convention; the other time featured Blaine and Nevin Rentzell.

Charles and Scott are both from the Central Chapter of PAA. The PAA Conference is held concurrently every year with the Pennsylvania Farm Show.
