NAMI York County, the local organization of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, will offer the NAMI Family-to-Family Education Program on Wednesdays, March 6 through May 22. The program will be held from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at Luther Memorial Church, 1907 Hollywood Drive, York.

NAMI Family-to-Family is a free, 12-session education program for family members, friends, and significant others of adults living with mental illness. The course is designed to help all family members understand and support their loved

one living with mental illness, while maintaining their own well-being.

The course includes information on illnesses such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, major depression, and other mental health conditions. The program is taught by trained teachers who know what it is like to have a loved one living with mental illness.

Youths To Host Church Dinner An all-you-can-eat spaghetti dinner and talent show will be held at the Fawn Grove Church of the Nazarene, 5300 Fawn Grove Road, Pylesville, Md., at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 23.

The teen group at the church will sponsor the event to raise money to send teen delegates to the Nazarene Youth Conference in Phoenix, Ariz., later this year. After dinner, a talent show featuring church

members of all ages will be held.

The public is invited to attend. The cost of dinner will include a meat or meatball sauce, fresh salad, garlic bread, beverages, and desserts. The cost will be discounted for children ages 4 to 11, and children age 3 and under may eat for free.

YWCA York, 320 E. Market St., York, will offer a 12-week Mindful Fathering Parenting Series on Mondays, Feb. 25 to May 13, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. The series is free, and dinner will be provided.

The evidence-based parenting program out of Canada is specifically designed for fathers. Developed

by Yorktown Family Services, Mindful Fathering is a psycho-educational group program for fathers who desire to raise children in a violence-free environment or who may have exposed their children, of any age, to intimate partner violence.

Tiramisu Tiramisu is an Italian layered dessert, and the name translates to “pick me up” or “cheer me up.”

Requiring no baking at all, it can be an easy treat to prepare. This recipe for tiramisu is courtesy of the American Dairy Association.

Tiramisu (Yield: 9 servings) 6 egg yolks 1 cup sugar 1 1/4 cup mascarpone cheese 1 3/4 cup heavy whipping cream 2 (12-ounce) packages savoiardi lady fingers 1/2 cup cold espresso or strong coffee

1/4 cup coffee-flavored liqueur (optional) 1 tablespoon cocoa for dusting Instructions: 1 - Combine egg yolks and sugar in the top of a double boiler, over boiling water. Reduce heat to low and cook for about 10 minutes, stirring constantly.

This is the sabayon. Remove from the heat and whip yolks until thick and lemon colored.

Add mascarpone to whipped yolks and beat until combined.

2 - In a separate bowl, whip cream to stiff peaks. Gently fold the

whipped cream in the mascarponesabayon mixture and set aside.

3 - Mix the cold espresso with the coffee liqueur, and dip the lady fingers into the mixture just long enough to get them wet. Do not soak them. Arrange the lady fingers in the bottom of an 8-inch square baking dish (or 6 by 9 inches). Spoon half the mascarpone cream filling over the lady fingers.

4 - Repeat the process with another layer. Refrigerate 4 hours or overnight. Dust with cocoa before serving.

Woodland Stewardship Program Posted The Horn Farm Center, 4945 Horn Road, York, will offer a Woodland Steward Training Program from April through October. Sessions will take place on Mondays and Tuesdays from 8 a.m. to noon.

The program is intended to provide foundational knowledge and practical skills for those interested in learning how to manage wooded and semiwild areas in ways that can meet human needs, improve biodiversity, restore woodland health, and regenerate degraded landscapes. The program will feature simple, small-scale, intensive, hand-tool-based techniques. No previous experience is required.

Topics will include forest ecology; disturbance-based forest management; riparian buffer design, installation, and maintenance; woodland plant cultivation; invasive species management; plant and insect identification; and animal tracking. Participants will work alongside Horn Farm woodland steward Wilson Alvarez in the woodlands and riparian areas of the 186-acre Horn Farm Center for Agricultural Education.

The program will consist of woodland work and periodic classroom training. Classroom time will be used to introduce foundational concepts and reinforce training. Classroom time will be emphasized when winter weather prevents outdoor work.

Wilson Alvarez will lead the Woodland Steward Training Program at Horn Farm Center from April through October.

Participants will receive their own set of tools to maintain and become proficient at using. This toolkit includes a professionalgrade axe, a woodland hoe, a bow saw, and loppers. Participants will be fully responsible for their own tools and will take their kit with them at the completion of the internship.

Alvarez is a certified permaculture designer, an inventor, a gardener, a skilled tracker, a bowyer, a nature awareness instructor, and a writer from Lancaster. For the past 14 years, he has taught classes and workshops on biointensive agriculture, regenerative technology, foraging, hunting, trapping, tracking, and

wilderness survival. Alvarez has studied through the Wilderness Awareness School via the Kamana program, and he received his Permaculture Design Certificate through Susquehanna Permaculture.

The Woodland Steward Training Program is limited to four people per session. There is a fee, and payment plans are available as needed.

Alliance Will Accept Award Nominations Pennsylvania Family Support Alliance (PFSA), a child abuse prevention organization, has launched the nomination period for the 2019 Pennsylvania Blue Ribbon Champions for Safe Kids Awards. Recipients will be announced in April, National Child Abuse Prevention Month, at ceremonies in Harrisburg and Pittsburgh.

As in years past, PFSA will honor five statewide individuals for their efforts to protect the well-being of children. The honorees will be two child welfare professionals, two community volunteers, and one media professional. Any individual who has worked or volunteered to protect Pennsylvania children from abuse and neglect is eligible. Media nominees must have covered Pennsylvania child abuse-related issues in 2018.

Award recipients will be announced and celebrated at a ceremony on Wednesday, April 3, in the Pennsylvania State Capitol Rotunda. A music prelude will start at 10:30 a.m., followed by the awards program at 11 a.m.

New for 2019, PFSA also will honor one Allegheny County

Champion for Safe Kids. Eligible nominees include any professional, volunteer, press member, or media entity whose work focused on children affected by abuse in Allegheny County. A ceremony will be held in Pittsburgh on Wednesday, April 10, to honor both the award recipient and the child victims of abuse.

Vaz earned a doctorate in electrical engineering from WPI, focusing on signal analysis and machine vision. He held systems and design engineering positions with the Raytheon Company, GenRad Inc., and the MITRE Corporation before joining the WPI Electrical and Computer Engineering faculty in 1987. Athletic Association Honors YCHS Alumni

York Catholic High School’s Athletic Association recently inducted (from left) Dave Strine, Genevieve McGann, Angelina Ortenzio, Tim Marks, (not pictured) Lisa Bornt-Davis, Mary McGann, and Tom Zielinski into the Athletic Association’s Athletic Hall of Fame.

The York Catholic High School (YCHS) Athletic Association recently inducted seven new members into its Athletic Hall of Fame. The inductees were introduced on Jan. 19 prior to the start of the girls’ varsity basketball game against Camp Hill. The Athletic Hall of Fame honors former coaches and student-athletes as well as the dedication of athletic program volunteers.

The recent inductees are Lisa Bornt-Davis, Class of 2003; Tim Marks, Class of 1979;

Genevieve McGann, Class of 2009; Mary McGann, Class of 2009; Angelina Ortenzio, Class of 2008; Dave Strine, Class of 1973; and Tom Zielinski, Class of 1979.

Bornt-Davis was the 2002 YAIAA County singles tennis champion. She only played tennis for one year in high school due to a broken ankle, knee surgery, and a fractured back.

After her York Catholic tennis career, she played Division I tennis all four years at Furman University. She was on the

Southern Conference champion team each year from 2004 to 2007 and was named to the AllSouthern Conference Second Team for doubles in 2004, 2006, and 2007. Bornt-Davis placed second at the 2018 National 30s in women’s doubles and third at the 2018 national mixed doubles. She ranked as high as No. 1 in the U.S. with her mother in the USTA National Super Senior Mother-Daughter Division, and she ranked as high as No. 4 in the U.S. with her father in the USTA National Super Senior Father-Daughter Division.

Marks’ basketball team won the state, district, and county championships in 1978 and 1979. Marks was named to the All-Country All-Star Team in 1979.

Genevieve and Mary were members of the state silver medal-winning basketball team in 2009. Their basketball teams also won the state championship in 2006, 2007, and 2008; the district championship all four years; and the county championship in 2007 and 2008. Genevieve and Mary were both on the varsity soccer team all four years. Both were

Strine was a member of the 1971 undefeated cross-country team that won the Diocesan Championship and finished fourth at states. Strine broke seven course records and finished eighth at states.

In 1972, Strine broke YCHS school records in the 440, the 880, and the 1-mile run. In 1973, his team won the Diocesan Championship and finished fourth at states.

Zielinski was a member of the basketball teams that won the state, district, and county championships in 1978 and 1979.

Farm Energy Day Planned Penn State Extension’s Renewable Energy Team has announced plans for Farm Energy Day, a day full of information sharing and discussion around topics to help farms, rural businesses, and communities adopt and adapt to renewable energy sources. To be held on Friday, March 15, at the Adams County Extension Office, 670 Old Harrisburg Road, Gettysburg, the event will include presentations

by Penn State Extension and industry energy experts, open discussions, and a site tour.

Information about improving the efficiency of the use of electricity, natural gas, and other fossil fuels will be discussed

along with opportunities to displace part or all of one’s electric bill with renewable energy. At the workshop, participants will be able to talk with installers as well as farmers who have installed solar photovoltaic (PV) resources.

The York County Agriculture Business Council (YCABC) has announced that the 33rd annual Agricultural Recognition Banquet will take place on Thursday, March 28, in Old Main Hall at the York Expo Center, 334 Carlisle Ave., York. The event will begin with a social time at 5:30 p.m., with dinner at 6:30 p.m., followed by a program.

The event is intended to strengthen mutual appreciation of business, urban and agricultural communities. The York Fair is among the sponsors of this year’s banquet. The keynote speaker will be Jennifer Flinchbaugh Beidel, a York County native who has taken her farm experience to the courtroom. She understands farmers and works with them to navigate environmental and FDA regulations. Drama Club To Present “Crazy For You” The Drama Club at KennardDale High School, 393 Main St., Fawn Grove, will present “Crazy for You” on Thursday, Feb. 28, and Friday, March 1, at 7 p.m.; on Saturday, March 2, at 1 and 7 p.m.; and on Sunday, March 3, at 3 p.m.

The musical, under the direction of James R. Craley, features classics by George Gershwi. The book is written by a York county native, Ken Ludwig.

Among the cast members are Sam Greaves as Bobby, Kasey Karoll as Polly, and Curtis Druck as Zangler. Pasta Dinner To Benefit H.O.P.E. A pasta dinner fundraiser for H.O.P.E. will be held on Monday, Feb. 25, at New Freedom Restaurant and Coffee Shop, 17308 Susquehanna Trail, New Freedom. Dinner will be served from 3 to 9 p.m.

The cost of a meal includes pasta with a choice of sauce, as well as salad, garlic bread, and a beverage. All proceeds will benefit H.O.P.E. (Help for Oncology Problems and Emotional Support).

Center To Take Part In Senior Food Program The Stewartstown Senior Center, 26 S. Main St, Stewartstown, will participate in the Senior Food Box Program sponsored monthly by the York County Food Bank.

There are income requirements that must be met in order to participate.

Persons who are at least age 60 and meet the income requirements - $1,316 for a household of one or $1,783 for a household of two - will receive a box of free food

every month. For each additional household member, $462 should be added.

Each box will include a variety of food items, including canned vegetables and fruit, shelf-stable milk, juice, cereal, peanut butter, pasta, a block of cheese, and a can of beef stew or chili. An appointment will be set up for recipients to pick up their box.

Four sixth-graders from St. John the Baptist School in New Freedom recently qualified for the Pennsylvania Cyber Robotics Coding Competition (CRCC) Finals.

To qualify, they competed against 40 other teams. The team of Madeline Murphy and Kyle Scott placed 10th, and Joshua Baker and Jacob Kelchaw placed 12th.

The Pennsylvania CRCC Finals will be held at Harrisburg University in Harrisburg. The competitors will be approximately 6,500
