Girl Scouts Earn Silver Awards Seven eighth-grade Cadette Girl Scouts in New Freedom completed a major milestone this winter. They earned their Silver Awards, the highest award a Girl Scout Cadette in sixth through eighth grades can earn. The Girl Scout Silver Award includes completing a long-term project, educating others, and making a difference in the Scouts’ community while working as a team and exhibiting leadership skills. The New Freedom Cadettes completed two projects in the community. The first project was assembly of chemotherapy care kits. Partnering with the local H.O.P.E. foundation, along with the Southern Branch YMCA, the Paul Smith Library and St. John Lutheran Church, the girls collected donations from local residents and businesses. These donations included items of comfort and hygiene for cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy treatment, including fleece blankets, sensitive skin soap, unscented hand sanitizer, puzzle books, coloring books, cards, mints, tissues, and toothbrushes. Part of the project included teaching younger Girl Scouts about cancer and chemotherapy

treatment and making cards of comfort and encouragement for chemotherapy patients. Through donations, the girls were able to package and donate more than 100 chemotherapy care kits. Through the project, the girls aimed to raise awareness of cancer, chemotherapy, and the local H.O.P.E. foundation and to encourage the community to continuing donating to the cause. The second Silver Award project was collecting pet care items and toys for animals in shelters. Partnering with the local New Freedom Animal Rescue Inc., Bark of the Town, and Shrewsbury Family Pet Shop, the girls collected donations of pet food, pet toys, cleaning supplies, and blankets. Additionally, the girls talked to younger children about animal care and

made fleece cat and dog toys. The girls were able to donate three large carloads of pet care and toys, with the hope that the items would make animals in shelters more comfortable and more likely to be adopted. The girls encourage community members to continue donating to and adopting animals from local animal shelters. Through these projects, the Scouts learned the importance of giving back to the community.

Chocolate-Dipped Sesame Tuiles For many people, no baked good is truly indulgent unless it includes chocolate. Baked goods range from relatively simple fare like chocolate chip cookies to more elaborate indulgences, such as this recipe for Chocolate-Dipped Sesame Tuiles from Michael Recchiuti and Fran Gage’s “Chocolate Obsession” (Stewart, Tabori & Chang). Tuiles are thin, curved cookies that often appeal as much to the eyes as they do to the stomach. This recipes makes an ideal choice for people who want to go the extra mile for their sweethearts this Valentine’s Day.

2 extra-large egg whites at room temperature 3 tablespoon unsalted butter with 82 percent butterfat, very soft 8 ounces tempered 70 percent chocolate for coating cookies Flavorless vegetable oil for the pans

Instructions: To bake the cookies: 1 - Preheat the oven to 350 F. Line the bottoms of four 12-by-18-inch sheet pans with parchment paper. Lightly coat the paper with flavorless vegetable oil. Put a rolling pin on a work surface. If you have two rolling pins, ready both. 2 - Combine the sesame seeds, flour, sugar, and salt in a medium Chocolate-Dipped bowl and whisk by hand until Sesame Tuiles combined. Mix - do not beat - the (Makes about 48 cookies) 1/2 cup plus 1 tablespoon sesame egg whites into the sesame seed mixture with a rubber spatula. seeds, preferably unhulled Stir in the butter with the spatula 1/3 cup granulated cane sugar 1/3 cup unbleached all-purpose until no streaks of butter remain. 3 - Measure 2 level teaspoons batflour ter onto a prepared sheet pan. 1/8 tablespoon kosher salt

Using a small offset spatula, spread it into a round about 3 1/2 inches in diameter. Repeat with the remaining batter, putting 8 rounds on each pan and leaving 1 1/2 inches between the rounds. 4 - Bake the trays, one at a time, until the cookies are a uniform golden brown, 6 to 8 minutes. Remove from the oven and, while the cookies are still warm, run the offset spatula under each cookie and place it upside down on the rolling pin so that it curls around the pin. (You should be able to do five cookies on a rolling pin, so by the time the sixth cookie is about to be draped over the pin, a few should be ready to be moved. Ideally, though, you will have two rolling pins.) If some of the cookies are not a uniform color, or if some cool too much and are no longer pliable, return them to the oven for another minute until evenly golden brown and again pliable. 5 - Leave the cookies on the rolling

pin until they cool completely and have become brittle, a matter of seconds. Carefully lift them off and store them in an airtight container at room temperature until you are ready to dip them. They will keep well for up to 3 days. Dip the cookies in chocolate: 1 - You can store the cookies and dip them on a day when you have tempered chocolate for another use, or you can temper chocolate specifically to finish the cookies. Use a tempering machine to temper the chocolate. 2 - Dip the convex (smooth) side of each cookie into the chocolate and then smooth the chocolate with a small offset spatula. Place on a work surface, chocolate side up, and let sit until the chocolate sets, about 30 minutes. 3 - Store in an airtight container in a cool place, not in the refrigerator. They will keep for up to one week.

Departments Celebrate FFA At Farm Show At the recent 103rd Pennsylvania Farm Show, held from Jan. 5 to 12, Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding and Education Secretary Pedro Rivera celebrated agricultural education during the state FFA’s Mid-Winter Convention with more than 5,000 FFA members and guests. Pennsylvania’s more than 150 high school agriculture education programs aim to prepare students for science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) careers and beyond. The Mid-Winter Convention recognized the academic, leadership and field-based experiences of 409 recipients of the Keystone Degree, the highest honor earned at the state level. In addition, the Pennsylvania FFA Alumni Association awarded more than 364 first-year members their own official FFA jacket after they completed a competitive application process. Last year marked the creation of the Commission on Agriculture Education Excellence. The

15-member commission complements Gov. Tom Wolf’s PAsmart initiative, an investment in STEM and computer science education and hands-on technical education programs. PAsmart will invest $20 million in new funding for computer science and STEM education, as well as an additional $10 million investment in apprenticeships and job training programs for in-demand careers. As part of a workforce development plan outlined in a report issued in 2018, the departments are working to identify gaps in education and training for those in-demand career paths; focus on workbased learning, including microcredentials and apprenticeships; and help Pennsylvanians obtain meaningful careers. The Pennsylvania FFA Association aims to help students develop their potential for leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education. Gardening Event Set Penn State Extension and the York County Master Gardeners invite gardening enthusiasts to grow their gardening knowledge at the 23rd annual GardenWise, an educational program of speakers and seminars for home and community gardeners, on Saturday, March 9, from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Central York Middle School, 1950 N. Hills Road, York. This year’s GardenWise will feature award-winning native landscape designer and author Larry Weaner as keynote speaker. He will present “Living in the Wild: My House,” sharing the idea that nature does not need to be secluded, but part of everyday living. Other noted speakers will include Susan Smith Pagano, associate professor at Rochester Institute of Technology, who will share about the symbiotic relationship between migratory birds and fruiting plants and trees in “Native Plants and Migratory Birds: A ‘Fruit-Full’ Pairing.” Dan Duran, professor at Rowan University, will explain the role that insects play in the ecosystem and how to foster their sustainability in “An Overview of the Ecosystem

Services Insects Provide.” These speakers, plus regional urban forester Julianne Schieffer, West Nile Virus program administrator Thomas L. Smith, nursery owner and Holly Society of America president Sue Hunter, and Master Gardener volunteer Debbie Hartman will conduct interactive breakout sessions. Topics will include herbs, hollies, pruning, ticks/Lyme disease, and more. The event will also include local vendors selling plants, gardening supplies, garden-themed crafts, and new and used garden books, as well as exhibits by local garden-related organizations. Registration before the event is required. A fee has been set and will cover breakfast and lunch. Early registrations, on or before Saturday, Feb. 16, will receive a discount. Registration will close on Saturday, March 2. To register, readers may visit https://extension.psu.edu/ gardenwise. Individuals who anticipate needing any type of accommodation or who have questions about the physical access provided may contact Adrian Stouffer at 717-919-4011.

Lifetree Café Program Set Lifetree Café will explore intelligent life on other planets on Sunday, Feb. 17, at 9:15 a.m. and on Wednesday, Feb. 20, at 1 p.m. at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ (UCC), 2173 Stoverstown Road, Spring Grove. Lifetree Café is a place where people gather for conversation about life and faith in a casual, comfortable, and safe setting. The program, titled “We’re Not Alone? The Search for Intelligent Life on Other Planets,” will feature a filmed interview with

Dr. Seth Shostak, senior astronomer at the SETI Institute and author of “Confessions of an Alien Hunter: A Scientist’s Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence.” Whether intelligent life exists in other places in the universe and what the search for that life is revealing will be discussed. Admission to the 60-minute event is free. For details on the program, readers may contact Chip Hoover at 717-792-3153 or chip08@aol.com.
