Friday, May 3, has been set as the date for the second annual Give Local York, a county-wide day of giving. During this year’s 24-hour online fundraising spree, community members may visit www.give localyork.org to make online donations to the nonprofit organizations of their choice.

The inaugural Give Local York event in 2018 raised $1.47 million for 211 nonprofit organizations, exceeding its goal of raising $1 million for 200 organizations. “Because we have a successful one under our belt, we have momentum on our side (for the second annual give day),” said Meagan Given, executive director of Give Local York. “My general theme for this year is ‘Bigger and Better.’”

Indeed, goals for York County’s second annual communitywide give day have been set at raising $3 million for 300 nonprofit groups. Given noted that there was a bit of a learning curve during last year’s inaugural event for organizers, representatives of nonprofit organizations, and community members, and she is optimistic that the event will continue to grow as everyone becomes more familiar with the give day concept. She noted that as of the Jan. 18 deadline for early registration, there were already 175 nonprofit organizations signed up to participate in the 2019 event, including 35 organizations that were not involved in 2018.

The event host is White Rose Leadership Institute, and organizers have drawn inspiration from give days in other communities, including Lancaster County’s Extraordinary Give. “We had a really great model to look at from Lancaster,” noted Given.

During the online giving extravaganza, community members will be able to make donations to a variety of 501(c)(3) organizations that do work that benefits York County and its residents. “(The) minimum gift (amount) is $10 to be inclusive,” commented Given.

“We want to spread the message that everyone can be a philanthropist.”

In addition to receiving donations from members of

the community, participating nonprofit organizations will also benefit from a stretch pool that has been set up to bolster the amount donated by community members. Given noted that organizers are shooting for a stretch pool of at least $250,000 - up from 2018’s $100,000 - and that community members are welcome to contribute funds to the stretch pool. At least $20,000 in additional funds will also be awarded to participating organizations as prizes.

Nonprofit organizations can register to participate in Give Local York online at www.give localyork.org. The deadline for organizations to sign up is Monday, April 1.

This year’s event will include an opportunity for participating organizations to connect with prospective volunteers, as well. When they set up profiles on www.givelocalyork.org, representatives of participating nonprofit organizations will have an opportunity to list volunteer positions they are looking to fill. On the give day, community members will be able to peruse the volunteer opportunities and sign up to help.

Given said that the idea to include a volunteerism component in the event stemmed from conversations she had with representatives from a number of nonprofits after last year’s give day. “They told me they need money, but they also need volunteers,” she explained, noting that signing up to volunteer is a way for people to support local nonprofits, even if they do not have funds to donate.

Another new feature planned

for the 2019 give day is that community members will have the opportunity to set up peerto-peer fundraising pages.

“Individuals can create their own profile fundraising page for an organization they support,” explained Given. They can then solicit donations by sharing links to their fundraising pages with family and friends via social media and email.

W hile the mechanism for donating through Give Local York is online, there will also be plenty of opportunities for face-to-face interaction between community members and representatives of the nonprofit organizations seeking support. “There’s a lot of energy and excitement around the give day,” Given noted. A large celebration is planned in downtown York in conjunction with May’s First Friday activities, and attendees will have the opportunity to interact with representatives of nonprofit organizations while enjoying live music and other festivities.

“It’s meant to be a party,” said Given, adding that a piece of feedback she frequently heard from community members after last year’s event was: “I didn’t know how much fun it was going to be!”

Additional parties and activities will be planned to mark the give day in communities throughout the county, and details about the events will be added to the listing at www.givelocalyork.org over the coming months.

“Of course it’s great to raise that much money in one day, but it’s really about community building and coming together,” said Given.

The guest conductor will be Gabriel Crouch, the director of choral activities and senior lecturer in music at Princeton University. He was formerly a member of the world-renowned a cappella group The King’s Singers for eight years. At the district festival, the students will audition for Regional Chorus, which will perform later in the year.

Leah Krieger, an 11th-grade

violinist, was selected to perform in the PMEA District 7 Orchestra Festival, held on Jan. 11 and 12 at Central Dauphin High School in Harrisburg. The festival included 130 musicians selected by audition from Adams, Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin, Lancaster, Lebanon, Perry, and York counties. The festival orchestra was conducted by Thomas Hong. The festival was hosted by Sam Kibler, director of orchestras at Central Dauphin High School in Harrisburg. A public concert was scheduled to be presented in the evening on Jan. 12 in the Central Dauphin High School auditorium.

Swing Dance Event Planned The Susquehannock Jazz Band will hold its fifth annual swing dance on Friday, Feb. 8, from 6 to 10 p.m. at Southern York Elementary School, 3280 Fissels Church Road, Glen Rock. Community members of all ages are invited to dance or just listen to live music.

No prior dance experience is required. The band will provide live music from the late 1930s and the 1940s, following the standard lineup of that time,

Red Lion Area Senior High School students have been selected for the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association (PMEA) District Band, Chorus, and Orchestra.

The District Band honorees are Johnathan Crone, trombone; David Groome, trombone; Braxton Lehman, euphonium; Jesse Schwartz, tuba; Hunter Logan, tuba; and Galen Brubaker, contralto clarinet. The students were eligible to participate in the PMEA District 7 Band Festival from Jan. 25 to 26 at Lancaster Mennonite High School. The festival included 135 musicians throughout Adams, Lancaster, and York counties. The band was conducted by composer-conductor Mark Camphouse from George Mason University, and the concert included selections

by James Curnow, Robert Sheldon, Clifton Williams, Samuel Hazo, John Paulson, and the guest conductor. A public concert was slated to be presented in the evening on Jan. 26 in the Calvin and Janet High Performing Arts Center in Lancaster.

The PMEA held District Chorus auditions at Central York High School on Oct. 27. Students from Adams, Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin, Lancaster, Lebanon, Perry, and York county schools were eligible for the District 7 Chorus. Six students successfully auditioned from Red Lion Area High School. There is a suggested nominal donation for admission to the dance, which will be received by the Airville Community Youth at the door. Proceeds will benefit the youths’ 30-hour famine event during the last weekend in February. Through the event, they will be fasting for 30 hours in order to raise money for World Vision and help fight world hunger.

Mermaid Fun Swim Class Set A Mermaid Fun Swim class will be offered on Saturday, Feb. 9, from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. at YWCA York, 320 E. Market St., York.

Girls and boys age 6 and up will learn how to swim like a mermaid or a merman.

Instructors will give participants tips on how to swim with a mermaid tail and set up fun activities in the pool. Participants

YMCA Posts Children’s Health Program The YMCA of York and York County has announced it will begin offering the Healthy Weight and Your Child program. This pilot program is designed to empower children ages 7 to 13, with support from their families, to reach a healthy weight and live a healthier lifestyle. Sessions will take place from Tuesday, Feb. 12, to Thursday, May 23, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 to 8 p.m. at the York Branch YMCA, 90 N. Newberry St., York.

The 25-session program engages the whole family, so together family members can understand how the home environment and other factors influence the choices that lead to a healthy weight. Additionally, the program combines the three elements of healthy eating, regular physical activity and behavior change.

Sessions are two hours in length, with the first hour delivered in a classroom setting and the second hour focusing on physical activity. The sessions are for

groups of eight to 15 children and their parents or caregivers.

Children eligible for the program must be between the ages of 7 and 13, have a body mass index greater than or equal to the 95th percentile, receive approval from their doctor or a health care provider and be accompanied by a parent or caregiver at every session.

Foundation Supports Housing Charities, Disaster Relief The Realtors Association of York and Adams Counties (RAYAC) Foundation has announced that in 2018 it awarded $2,500 to the American Red Cross to aid flood relief efforts in York and Adams counties, as well as $46,650 to 17 housing-related charities in York & Adams counties. Individual donors, event sponsors and volunteers made the donations possible. The monies were raised during four fundraisers throughout 2018.

The foundation presented checks to the housing-related nonprofit organizations during a ceremony on Dec. 21 at the RAYAC office in York. Recipients included Adams Rescue Mission for Project 114, Bridge of Hope of York County for rent assistance for homeless mothers and children, Children’s Aid Society to replace privacy windows in the crisis nursery, Children’s Home of York for the residential youth program, Hoffman Homes for Youth to help replace

the facility’s roof, House of Hope to help with refinishing floors, and LifePath Christian Ministries to refurbish the men’s shelter shower.

Also, funds were presented to Margaret E. Moul Home to replace garden boxes and outdoor furniture, Miss Bobbi’s Place to assist with homeless shelters, New Hope Ministries for its housing assistance program, PennMar Human Services to provide a patient lift for mobility in a residential home, Servants Inc. for its Home Helps program, SpiritTrust Lutheran to help older adults feel at home, Survivors Inc. for the Claudia House Storage Project, TrueNorth Wellness Services for bathroom renovations, YWCA Hanover for safe home transitional housing, and YWCA York for building repairs.

Extension Plans Special Workshop Penn State Extension will offer a workshop on running for local government positions. The workshop, Toss Your Hat in the Ring, will take place on Tuesday, Feb. 12, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Penn State Extension York County, 112 Pleasant Acres Road, York.

The workshop will include an overview of Pennsylvania local government and the responsibilities of a township supervisor, a borough council member, or a school board director, along with instructions on how to run, including filing a petition, reporting campaign expenses, and other important information. There will also be a panel of local officials who will talk about why they decided to run for office and some of their experiences since they were elected.

The workshop will not offer campaign tips or strategies. The focus will be on understanding the roles, responsibilities, and personal rewards that come with public service.

Sparrow Place is a local nonprofit looking to provide a house with some acreage as a voluntary, long-term-stay residential restorative program for survivors of domestic sex trafficking or commercial sexual exploitation. The organization believes that county living environment and a supportive community are key to the trauma-informed care needed for this population.
