It takes a special person to willingly run into the frigid waters of the Susquehanna River in February, but year after year the York County Polar Plunge draws a sizeable crowd of willing “plungers” - as the participants are affectionately dubbed. The 11th annual York County Polar Plunge is set to take place from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 2, along the Susquehanna River in front of John Wright Restaurant, 234 N. Front St., Wrightsville.

Not only are folks willing to dip into the waters amidst sometimes freezing temperatures, but many also go all out and participate in the annual costume contest. “Last year the winner of the most original (costume) was a tree,” recalled organizer Robyn Liggins-Smith, adding that the costume contest is her favorite portion of the event. “ We have superheroes, ballet dancers, swimsuits, Hawaiian dancers,

W here’s Waldo … just about anything you can think of has joined in the costume contest,” Liggins-Smith shared.

York Revolution mascot DownTown joins the fun each year by helping to entertain the crowd, going so far as to actually plunge in his costume. Another staple is the team that starts the waves of plungers, which is made up of current and retired police officers from throughout York County and led by Lt. Dan Aikey of the York County Police Department.

Registration and sign-in will open at 9:30 a.m., followed by opening ceremonies at 10 a.m. and the costume parade and contest at 10:45 a.m. Awards will be given for the best costume and most original costume.

Plungers will begin assembling in waves around 11:45 a.m., and the plunge will start at noon.

Special Olympics PA York County (SOYC) athletes will lead each wave of participants to the river. Plungers may dip in just a toe or go all in for a total of three minutes.

Heated tents will be set up for participants to change into dry clothes afterward. Coffee, hot chocolate, water, and snacks will also be available.

To register in advance - which organizers recommend for anyone interested in avoiding waiting in long lines - as an individual or a team, readers may visit www.specialolympicsyorkcounty.org. “There is no cost to register - everyone and anyone can plunge,” explained Liggins-Smith.

“However, this is a fundraiser, so we ask that you get sponsors.”

Participants who raise at least $25 will receive a T-shirt, and those who raise at least $100 will receive a hooded sweatshirt.

Golden Plunger awards - which are actually golden plungers - are given to the individual and the team that have raised the most money.

All proceeds will support the 360 athletes of the SOYC, which provides year-round sports training and competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. The Polar Plunge

helps to ensure that all training and competition opportunities will continue to be provided free of charge to the SOYC athletes and their families. The 15 sports programs are supported by hundreds of volunteers and contributions from the community.

Anyone who would like to contribute toward SOYC without taking a dip in the icy cold river is welcome to donate at the aforementioned website or to attend as a chicken plunger - someone who supports the plunge but does not go into the water. The infamous chicken dance, set for 11:15 a.m., will be performed by all of the chicken plungers in attendance.

Liggins-Smith said that last year’s 10th anniversary Polar Plunge raised a total of $76,000 for SOYC. “The weather was actually nice, if you consider 34 degrees nice, and that was the air temperature,” recalled LigginsSmith. “The water temperature was about 21 degrees.” Nevertheless, approximately 750 plungers stepped up to - or into - the challenge.

Children’s Art Club Sets Meeting McKendree United Methodist Church (UMC), 3708 Delta Road, Airville, will host a meeting of its Kids’ Art Club in the church hall on Saturday, Feb. 16, at 9 a.m.

Children ages 9 to 13 from the community are invited to participate. The project will be pulled string art. The class will be taught by Kay Taylor, with assistance from other members of the church.

The purpose of the Kids’ Art Club is to provide opportunities for students to experience art through the use of different materials and acrylic paints. Each session includes an art or craft project involving art techniques, color mixing, and more. Each student keeps an art information and sketch book. Each class is stand-alone, and students do not need to commit to any number of

classes. Each club meeting is approximately one and a half hours in length.

There will be a fee per student for the Feb. 16 meeting. Also, each student is asked to bring a nonperishable food item for donation to Delta Community Services food pantry. All supplies and a light snack will be provided. The refreshments will be donated by church members.

Bluebird Box Workshop and Painting activities will be held on Saturday, Feb. 9, and Sunday, Feb. 10, from 2 to 4 p.m. A park naturalist will introduce cavity nesters, the role nesting cavities play in local habitats, and the behaviors of Eastern bluebirds. After the 45-minute presentation, participants will construct a bluebird box to take home. The activity is well suited for children age 8 and up to do together with their caregivers.

Parks Department Plans Programs The York County Department of Parks and Recreation has scheduled several activities. The programs will take place at the Nixon County Park Nature Center, located on Nixon Drive, York.

A Mammal Fur and Skulls program will be offered on Saturday, Feb. 2, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday, Feb. 3, from noon to 4 p.m. Attendees may arrive at any time during the drop-in program and stay for as long as they wish. Attendees will have the opportunity to test their mammal knowledge as they compare skulls and furs of different North American mammals, including the skulls of predators and prey and the furs of land and water animals.

Hiking Club To Offer Events The York Hiking Club will host several hikes and special events during February. The South Central York County Senior Center, 150 E. Main St., New Freedom, has announced its upcoming activities. The center serves a hot lunch at 11:30 a.m. each day, and attendees are encouraged to arrive at 11:20 a.m.

The center offers a variety of programs during the week. Isometric exercises take place at 9:15 a.m. each day, tai chi is held at 10:15 a.m. each day, and Stretch Yoga takes place at 9 a.m. on Mondays. Line dancing is offered at 10 a.m. on Wednesdays.

Center attendees may also use exercise equipment and walk in the gym every morning. The center’s weights class, which includes using weights and working on agility, is held at 9 a.m. on Fridays, and interested participants are encouraged to arrive early, as seating is limited.

Additional activities offered by the senior center include the acrylic art class on Mondays at 9:30 a.m., the watercolor art class on Tuesdays at 9:30 a.m., ceramics on Wednesdays at 9:15 a.m., Walking Through the Bible

on Thursdays at 8:45 a.m., and the Friends Together Craft Class on Fridays at 9 a.m. Classes on card making and blanket knotting, as well as a quilters’ group, are also offered. The center is also planning to offer a jewelrymaking class, a workshop focused on diabetes, and a balance class; more details are forthcoming.

Also, the senior center is seeking a driver for its Meals on Wheels route in Stewartstown.

AHA Sets National Wear Red Day The American Heart Association (AHA) has announced that National Wear Red Day will be marked on Friday, Feb. 1, as February is designated as American Heart Month. Individuals, workplaces, and landmarks across central Pennsylvania will “go red” in celebration of National Wear Red Day. The initiative aims to unite millions of people for a common goal: the eradication of heart disease and stroke.

Individuals are encouraged to

wear red on Feb. 1 to raise awareness about cardiovascular disease. Participants are encouraged to share their efforts on social media using the hashtag #WearRedandGive.

In 2004, the AHA created Go Red for Women, a social initiative designed to dispel myths and raise awareness of heart disease and stroke as the No. 1 killer of women, as well as to empower women to take charge of their heart health.

Go Red for Women aims to encourage awareness of the issue of women and heart disease and also action to save more lives. In 2010, the AHA set a strategic goal of reducing death and disability from cardiovascular disease and strokes by 20 percent while improving the cardiovascular health of all Americans by 20 percent by the year 2020.

The next monthly meeting of the South Central Pennsylvania Woodturners Club will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 5, at 6:30 p.m.

The gown, designed by the bride, was botanically inspired and created by Anomalie, a company that custom makes wedding gowns. The shoes, also designed by the bride, were created by Harriet Wilde of London, England. The bride carried a bouquet of soft roses and dahlias in maroon, plum and cream.

Providing music for the ceremony was the Highline String Quartet.

The reception took place at The Boathouse at Prospect Park.

By making the attorney general’s suspicious activity reporting tool available on the PDMP and the Department of Health’s website, another layer of safety is added for the responsible prescribing of controlled substances such as opioids. The illegal diversion of prescription pain pills from doctors’ offices and pharmacies is contributing to the opioid epidemic across the commonwealth, but diversion activity is hard to identify and even harder to investigate. The new reporting tool, which is available online to everyone, allows people to anonymously give the attorney general’s office detailed information about suspected diversion so criminal

activity can be better investigated and prosecuted.

The attorney general’s Office of Diversion created the suspicious activity report form, a web-based form, for health care providers and the general public to report suspicious activity involving prescription medication. Things that might be reported include fraudulent, stolen, or altered prescriptions; a suspicious doctor or pharmacy; or an individual obtaining prescription drugs for any purpose other than the treatment of an existing medical condition, such as for purposes of misuse, abuse, or diversion.

Completed reports are assigned to the appropriate attorney general’s office investigator in the region where the suspicious activity is alleged to have taken place. Those with an active Pennsylvania professional license that permits them to prescribe or dispense medications must register to

use the PDMP. Authorized users include prescribers, dispensers, the attorney general’s office (on behalf of law enforcement), designated commonwealth personnel, and medical examiners or county coroners.

More than 90,000 registrants have conducted approximately 1.6 million patient searches each month.

The PDMP online database allows prescribers and dispensers of controlled substances to monitor who is obtaining opioids, who prescriptions are being obtained from, and how often they are prescribed, and it also supports clinicians in identifying patients who may be struggling from the disease of addiction and help connect them with treatment services.

Professor To Discuss Race Revolts Jacobus Lions To Hold Race Tournament

Whether it is to spend more time exploring the great outdoors or enjoying the company of family and friends, everyone wants to find more time in their busy schedules to do the things they love. While work at home and at the office always seems to be beckoning, no one wants to be tied down by housework and/or a to-do list.

Though it is impossible to add more minutes to the day, several tips can help people save time.

First, people should clean as they go. When it comes to keeping a home clean and organized, it pays to do a little bit at a time rather than spend a whole

day or weekend on chores. Wipe down the shower after each use to avoid the build-up of mold and mildew. Dust surfaces in the closet regularly to keep items and clothes clean longer, and wipe kitchen surfaces while cooking. Regular maintenance goes a long way toward keeping a home tidy and ready for spurof-the-moment gatherings.

2 - Remove the soup from the heat and place in a food processor. Blend the mixture to form a smooth consistency. Alternatively, mash the soup with a potato masher. Press the soup through a strainer to remove any tomato skin or seeds.

3 - Place the soup in the pan and return to the heat. Stir in the milk or cream, ground almonds, and sugar. Warm the soup through and add the shredded basil just before serving. Transfer the soup to warm bowls and serve hot.

After home and work, the next most common place people spend their time is in their vehicles. The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety says the average American spends 17,600 minutes driving each year. Because they spend so much time behind the wheel, drivers need to be prepared for breakdowns.

Packing an emergency kit in the car can help people make the best of such situations.

A car emergency kit can help drivers get back on the road promptly. Without such kits, drivers may be stranded for hours after a breakdown. Emergency kits also come in handy during weather-related events that can sideline cars until

roads become passable. Getting caught in a vehicle during a snowstorm and failing to have the proper gear can be a lifethreatening scenario under extreme conditions.

The Department of Motor Vehicles and the Department of Homeland Security note that these key items should always be included in a car emergency kit: durable bags or crates to store supplies, a complete first aid kit, a small fire extinguisher, jumper cables, rain ponchos, a plastic tarp, flashlights and extra batteries, bottled water, a small cache of nonperishable foods, a wrench and pliers, local maps, rags, duct tape, a multipurpose tool, an ice scraper,

automotive fluids, blankets and warm clothing, cat litter for slick roads, tire-changing equipment, a spare tire, road flares or caution reflectors, an empty gas canister, cash for gas and a phone charger cable.

Being prepared can make a difference when vehicles are sidelined. In addition to an emergency kit, cars and trucks should be regularly maintained to prevent breakdowns. This includes ensuring all fluids are at proper levels, filters are changed, batteries are in good working order and tires are inflated correctly. Investing in a roadside assistance service also can help get drivers back on the road quickly.

College Posts Documentary Screening Co-director Erin Beckloff will present her documentary “Pressing On: The Letterpress Film” at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 31, in York College’s Weinstock Lecture Hall in Willman Business Center. The college is located at 441 Country Club Road, York.

The screening will be followed by a question-and-answer session with Beckloff and is open to the public free of charge.

Beckloff is a letterpress printer, designer, educator, and filmmaker who preserves anecdotal and technical knowledge of printing history and culture. Her research explores the letterpress community’s expansiveness through time and how the letterpress printing process can survive through educating others in the craft. She serves as an assistant professor of communication design at Miami University and holds a Master of Fine Arts in graphic design from Vermont College of Fine Arts. In 2011, she revitalized the Curmudgeon Press type shop and developed letterpress courses as

Beckloff co-directed the film.

Members of the Steelers Fan Club of York presented a check for $2,000 to representatives of the York County Sheriff ’s K-9 unit at The Cove, where the fan club meets on every game day. Each year, the fan club donates money to charity. The club chose to support the K-9 unit this year to follow the example of Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger’s foundation, which gives to K-9 units across the United States.
