Smith Wins Essay Contest

Jamilyn Smith, a senior at Kennard-Dale High School, was chosen as the local winner of the Voice of Democracy contest at the Stewartstown VFW. For her accomplishment, she received a certificate, a photo with Rep. Mike Jones, and a dinner with members of the VFW. Her oral essay will be considered for scholarship money at the state level.

The Voice of Democracy is a scholarship program started by the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) in 1947. Each year, nearly 40,000 high school students compete for more than $2 million in scholarships and incentives. Students compete by writing and recording an audio essay on an annual patriotic theme. This year’s theme is “Why My Vote Matters.”

As part of its commitment to highlighting good news in the local community, Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. Members of the Kennard-Dale High School Spanish Honor Society recently filled a suitcase with school supplies and jigsaw puzzles, as collecting school supplies is one of the group’s service projects. The students dropped off the materials with the Servants Organization, and volunteers will deliver the donations to a school in Guatemala during a mission trip. The York Symphony Orchestra (YSO) will present “National Heroes” on Saturday, Jan. 19, at 7:30 p.m. at the Appell Center for the Performing Arts, 50 N. George St., York. The Classical Series Concert will include a special guest performance from award-winning pianist Natasha Paremski.

The “National Heroes” concert will begin with a performance of “Make Gentle the Life of This World,” composed by Raymond Horton, which honors the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The audience will hear the famous speech delivered by Robert F. Kennedy in the wake of King’s assassination.

The Jan. 19 concert will also celebrate two composers who were national heroes in their homelands - Dmitri Shostakovich in Russia and Jean Sibelius in Finland. Shostakovich was a major composer of the 20th century.

Sibelius was a Finnish composer and violinist of the late Romantic and early-modern periods.

Paremski began her piano studies when she was 4 years old, and she made her professional debut at age 9. She was awarded several prestigious artist prizes at a very young age, including the Gilmore Young Artists prize in 2006 at age 18, the Prix Montblanc in 2007, and the Orpheum Stiftung Prize in Switzerland. In September 2010, she was awarded the Classical Recording Foundation’s Young Artist of the Year Award. She has performed with major orchestras throughout North America and was featured in a major two-part film for BBC Television on the life and work of Tchaikovsky.

rugged terrain, but the hike will be set at a comfortable pace. The meal will be served at 1:30 p.m. to both hikers and non-hikers.

A 4.5-mile hike just south of the Mason-Dixon Line to Parkton, Md., will be offered on Sunday, Jan. 27. Hikers will traverse the Northern Central Railroad Trail called the Torrey C. Brown Rail Trail and walk along the icy Fourth Mine Branch of Little Falls Creek. Participants will depart at 1 p.m. from York County School of Technology. YCLC Plans Buck A Book Program News Submissions from pg 1

York County Literacy Council (YCLC) is preparing for the 2019 Buck a Book Reading Program in York County schools. Approximately 20 community volunteers helped to stuff 30,000 student envelopes into teacher envelopes in preparation for delivery to the schools after the holiday break.

The preparation took placed during three sessions. Community members, members of Sertoma Club of York, and members of the York Women’s Association participated.

The Buck a Book Reading

Program provides prizes for students who read books and raise funds for the YCLC’s programs. In addition, schools are offered the opportunity to have educational assemblies and can earn books for their libraries. All promotional materials are provided to schools as well as incentives for faculty.

The YCLC is an educational organization that provides free classes for basic reading, High School Equivalency Diploma and English as a Second Language adult students of York County.

YCLC trains volunteer tutors to

provide one-to-one literacy instruction for adult students.

According to the YCLC, there are approximately 40,000 adults in York County who are functionally illiterate.

Scholars Earn Recognition Several students were recently honored as University Scholars at Susquehanna University, Selinsgrove. The annual Scholars Program was held on Oct. 26 in Susquehanna’s Stretansky Concert Hall to recognize and congratulate the university’s most successful student scholars. To be named a University Scholar, students must have earned a cumulative grade point average of 3.75 in full-time study for the past two

semesters or equivalent credit hours of part-time study.

Rachael Blaine is a creative writing major in the Class of 2021. A 2017 graduate of Northeastern High School, she is the daughter of Sheri Blaine and Sterling Chapman.

Erin Cuddy is an early childhood education major in the Class of 2020. A 2016 graduate of Conestoga Valley High School, she is the daughter of Suzanne Cuddy.

Alexandria Dellone is a French major in the Class of 2020. A 2016 graduate of Dallastown Area High School, she is the daughter of Denise and Mike Dellone.

KCA To Host Inspirational Speaker Relay For Life Event Planned Keystone Christian Academy (KCA) invites the public to a presentation by inspirational speaker and author Jennifer Foxworthy on Friday, Feb. 1, at Asbury United Methodist Church, 340 E. Market St., York, starting at 9:30 a.m.

Foxworthy will be speaking at KCA’s morning chapel service, and the school, in cooperation with Asbury United Methodist Church, has opened the program to the public. Her topic will be “The Greater Impact for the Greater Good: Which Has a Greater Impact, a Pebble or a Rock?” The audience will discover how to make the greatest impact on their personal lives, their homes, and their community.

An award-winning motivational speaker, Foxworthy travels the country to help people find personal peace, purpose, and power by transparently drawing upon her personal life experiences with low self-esteem, domestic violence, and overcoming adversity. She is the author of “Tomorrow My Sunshine Will Come: Memoirs of Women Who Survived Domestic Violence,” the television show host of “Living Unshackled on Purpose,” host of the Unstoppable You Conference, and a corporate trainer for the College of Southern Maryland.

worthy graduated from William Penn Senior High and embarked on a distinguished career in the United States Navy. As an aircrewman, Foxworthy flew in combat missions in support of three wars (Kosovo, Afghanistan, and Iraq), logged more than 3,700 flight hours, and received four Air Medals. She has been noted as the first AfricanAmerican female aircrewman, the first African-American aircrewman in the enlisted ranks, and the first female in-flight technician during her squadron tours.

After completing the Substance Abuse and Rehabilitation Program School, she changed her focus in the military from warfare to welfare and became a certified alcohol and drug counselor. She earned numerous awards, including Outstanding Military Person of the Year, 2007 Naval Air Station Whidbey Island Sea Sailor of the Year, two Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals, and five Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals.

Tortilla Soup Recipe Tortilla Soup (serves four) 4 corn tortillas, freshly made or a few days old 1 tablespoon vegetable oil, plus extra for frying 1 small onion, finely chopped 2 garlic cloves, crushed 1 14-ounce can plum tomatoes, drained 4 cups chicken stock Small bunch cilantro Salt and ground black pepper Using a sharp knife, cut each tortilla into four or five strips, each measuring about 3/4 inches wide.

Pour vegetable oil to a depth of 3/4 inch into a heavy frying pan.

Heat until a small piece of tortilla, added to the oil, floats on the top and bubbles at the edges.

Add a few tortilla strips to the hot oil and fry for a few minutes, until crisp and golden brown all over, turning them occasionally.

Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on a double layer of paper towels. Cook the remaining tortilla strips in the same way.

Heat the 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil in a large, heavy pan.

Add the chopped onion and garlic and cook over medium heat for two to three minutes, stirring constantly with a wooden spatula, until the onion is soft and translucent. Do not let the garlic turn

brown, or it will give the soup a bitter taste.

Chop the tomatoes using a large, sharp knife and add them to the onion mixture in the pan.

Pour in the chicken stock and stir well. Bring to a boil, then lower the heat and let simmer for about 10 minutes, until the liquid has reduced slightly.

Chop the cilantro. Add to the soup, reserving a little to use as a garnish. Season to taste.

Place a few of the crisp tortilla pieces in the bottom of four warmed soup bowls. Ladle the soup on top. Sprinkle each portion with the reserved chopped cilantro and serve.

Fiddler Plans Concert

New Friends Plan Meeting

Fiddler Eileen Ivers, an innovator and pioneer in the Celtic and World music genres, will present a concert on Friday, Jan. 18, 2019, at 7:30 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of York, 925 S. George St., York. The Susquehanna Folk Music Society (SFMS) will sponsor the event.

The daughter of Irish immigrants, Ivers grew up in the culturally diverse neighborhood of the Bronx, N.Y. She has been rooted in Irish traditional music since she was 8 and has won nine All-Ireland championships on fiddle, a 10th on tenor banjo, and more than 30 championship medals.

After graduating magna cum laude in mathematics from Iona College and while pursuing postgraduate work in mathematics, Ivers fully immersed herself in the different genres of music that she experienced growing up in New York. She sought parallels in certain traditional music styles, which contributed to what has become the signature immigrant soul sound featured in many of her recordings since the late 1980s.

Ivers is a Grammy Award winner and an Emmy nominee and has made guest appearances with more than

History Center To Offer Updates York County History Center will host project updates on the progress and status of the History Center’s new Museum and Library Archives at the former Met-Ed Steam plant in York.

Farm Show To Showcase Agricultural Heritage The 103rd Pennsylvania Farm Show began on Jan. 4 at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex, 2300 N. Cameron St., Harrisburg. It will continue through Saturday, Jan. 12, with daily hours from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays and from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Jan. 12.

This year, the Pennsylvania Farm Show is honoring agriculture’s rich heritage and promising future with the theme “Inspiring Pennsylvania’s Story.” The theme will be showcased in related events like a daily story time for children, interviews with Pennsylvanians working in agriculture, and opportunities for attendees to engage and tell their own stories. The theme was incorporated into special events and activities at the Farm Show Complex on Jan. 7.

The Pennsylvania Farm Show is known to be the nation’s largest indoor agricultural event,

featuring 12,000 competitive exhibits, more than 5,200 of which are animal competitions, plus 300 commercial exhibitors.

This year’s event will feature demonstrations, competitions, programs, entertainment, and more, as well as the butter sculpture on display.

The Pennsylvania Farm Bureau exhibit area, located in the Exposition Hall near the main food court, will feature an interactive baseball-themed area, free animal visors for youngsters, and a family photo booth. Additionally, a representative from the Government Affairs and Communications Division will be on hand to answer questions about current issues impacting farmers and Pennsylvania agriculture.

Only service dogs are permitted at the facility during the Farm Show. No dogs are permitted in the poultry area.

Admission is free, and there is a parking fee in Farm Show lots. Offsite Farm Show parking lots are located east of the complex at the intersection of Elmerton Avenue and Sycamore Drive and at HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, on Wildwood Park Drive, directly north of the complex.

Handicapped-accessible parking is located at all lots operated by the Farm Show Complex, and individuals can also be dropped off in the circle of the Cameron Street Lobby.

2019 FestivICE Celebration Set FestivICE, presented by York Traditions Bank and Eventive, will expand for 2019 to three days and fill Cherry Lane in downtown York with music, family fun, and live sculpting of thousands of pounds of ice. The free winter celebration will be held on Thursday, Jan. 17, through Saturday, Jan. 19.

Chainsaw-wielding artists will again turn more than 20,000 pounds of ice into frosty pieces of art throughout the three-day event, including a 40-foot ice slide for the celebration’s youngest attendees to ride for free. Ice sculpture artists will honor the late Dr. Martin Luther King on his holiday weekend by paying tribute to him and heroes inspired by his message in their ice sculptures.

A record-setting 20 ice sculptures will be featured, including 15 creations sponsored by local businesses to support Children’s Aid Society.

Vendors will offer handmade and vintage wares in Central Market, joining a number of

Beaver Street and Market Street shops and restaurants that will be open.

The expanded winter party will kick off on the night of Jan. 17 with a make-your-own-superhero-cape event by Creative York from 5 to 6:30 p.m. and a free screening of “The Incredibles” at the Capitol Theatre at 7 p.m., both part of CelebrateARTS, an initiative of the Cultural Alliance of York County. York Young Professionals will host a social at Cherry Lane from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The ice slide will be open from 5 to 7:30 p.m.

Events To Offer College Insight York College, 441 Country Club Road, York, will host two public events designed to provide valuable insight on popular college topics - choosing the right major and, for parents, how to prepare a student for college. The Central Pennsylvania Congressional Internship Association, formerly the Fourth Congressional District Internship Association, has announced it is accepting applications from local college students with an interest in growing their leadership skills through public service during a 10-week paid summer internship program with a member of Congress.

Taking place from May through August, the Summer Internship Program awards several area college students a

chance to experience the realities of public service through full-time internships with Congressman Scott Perry, who serves the 10th Congressional District, encompassing Dauphin County and parts of York and Cumberland counties.

Undergraduate college students who are residents of the 10th Congressional District of Pennsylvania and have completed their freshman year of undergraduate studies by the beginning of the internship are eligible to apply.

Each intern will spend five

weeks in Washington, D.C., assisting with legislative projects and also spend five weeks assisting with constituent casework in one of Perry’s district offices in the Harrisburg area.

Thanks to financial donations from members of the Central Pennsylvania Congressional Internship Association and other donors, the interns receive a weekly stipend, and intern housing is provided at no charge while the interns work in Washington, D.C. Housing is not provided while the interns work in the district offices.

Notable program alumni include Pennsylvania state Rep. Kate Klunk and Chris Gray, senior adviser to the Office of the Administrator for the U.S. Small Business Administration.

Interns are selected based on academic performance, extracurricular activities, and their demonstrated commitment to the ideals of public service. The selection of interns is made on a nonpartisan basis.
