Smith Wins Essay Contest
Community Invited To Submit News
Jamilyn Smith, a senior at Kennard-Dale High School, was chosen as the local winner of the Voice of Democracy contest at the Stewartstown VFW. For her accomplishment, she received a certificate, a photo with Rep. Mike Jones, and a dinner with members of the VFW. Her oral essay will be considered for scholarship money at the state level. The Voice of Democracy is a scholarship program started by the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) in 1947. Each year, nearly 40,000 high school students compete for more than $2 million in scholarships and incentives. Students compete by writing and recording an audio essay on an annual patriotic theme. This year’s theme is “Why My Vote Matters.”
As part of its commitment to highlighting good news in the local community, Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC) invites churches, clubs, community groups, schools, and other nonprofit organizations, as well as residents, to submit news releases to the Community Courier. Announcements for nonprofits are printed in the Community Courier free of charge as space is available and
may cover meeting information, fundraisers, special events, community service, awards and accomplishments, and more. News submissions should answer who, what, where (address and town), when (date and time), and why and provide any other relevant details and contact information. News releases are accepted by email and regular mail. Community See News Submissions pg 3

Members of the Kennard-Dale High School Spanish Honor Society recently filled a suitcase with school supplies and jigsaw puzzles, as collecting school supplies is one of the group’s service projects. The students dropped off the materials with the Servants Organization, and volunteers will deliver the donations to a school in Guatemala during a mission trip. Among the students taking part were secretary Matt Tracey, president Megan Thomas, historian Rachel Macas, vice president Kayla Huber, treasurer Jamilyn Smith, Justin Bryant, Eli Grow, Akira Misselhorn, Josh Amberman, Bri Miller, and Jenna Soukaseum.
