Churches Plan Musical Performance Christ United Methodist Church in Jacobus, will be directed by Stephen Baker, a 2016 Red Lion Area High School graduate. Baker is currently a junior at Millersville University, where he is studying music education and vocal performance. He also
Bethlehem United Methodist Church, 109 E. Main St., Dallastown, has posted its Christmas events. The church will open its chancel choir’s Christmas cantata dress rehearsal to the public on Sunday, Dec. 23, at 1 p.m. in the sanctuary. The cantata will also be performed at the church’s 10:30 p.m. Christmas Eve service. Three Christmas Eve services have been set for Monday, Dec. 24. All are welcome to attend. The family Christmas Eve service, a shortened service open to all and including candle lighting, will be held at 4 p.m. in the main sanctuary. At 7:30 p.m., a contemporary service featuring music by the praise team, a pastoral message, and candle lighting will be held in the church’s new Trinity Life Center. The traditional candlelight service will begin at 10:30 p.m. in the main church sanctuary. It will feature
co-directs an a cappella group at the university. Sue Shoff, a soprano, and Jolleen Biesecker, an alto, will be soloists. Bryan Mann, Christ Church pastor, will provide narration. There is no charge for the concert, and everyone is invited.

Firefighters, law enforcement personnel, and first responders who are working on Christmas Day are invited to attend. Reservations are appreciated, but drop-ins will be welcome. Dog License Deadline Posted York County residents can purchase 2019 dog licenses at the York County treasurer’s office. State law requires all dogs three months and older to be licensed by Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2019. An annual dog license will be discounted if the animal is spayed or neutered. Lifetime licenses are available for dogs with permanent identifications. Older adults and persons with disabilities may purchase a license at a discounted rate. The owner’s contact information is used by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture’s Bureau of Dog Law, local police and shelters to identify lost dogs and get them home safely. People who do not have licenses for their dogs may be fined up to $300. Licenses may purchased
online, by mail or in person at the treasurer’s office, which is on the second floor of the York County Administrative Center, 28 E. Market St., York, or at any one of the 16 satellite sub-agents throughout York County. Elks Invite Youths To Enter Contests eight. The essays must be typed and printed on 8.5-by-11-inch paper. The essays must be no more than 250 words, and the theme “Drugs Take Away …” must be noted on the essay. The video contest is open to pre-high school, high school, and post-graduation. Participants work as individuals or in groups. Videos should be two to five minutes in length and be submitted on a flash drive. Submissions for all contests are due on Friday, Dec. 28, to the York Lodge. All entries must include a personal information page containing the contestant’s name, address, phone number, school, and present grade. All entries become the property of
the Elks. A certificate of participation will be given to all entrants. The York Lodge will then select one winner from each contest grade level to move on to district competition. The winners that move on to district competition will be notified, as release forms will need to be completed. Winners of the district competition will move on to state competition. The winners of the state competition will be announced in April 2019 and will be invited to receive their prize at the Pennsylvania Elks Spring Convention, to be held in May in Harrisburg. Parks Department Posts Activities The York County Department of Parks and Recreation has planned several hikes, along with the Kids Christmas Bird Count. The parks department will host two Marshmallow Hikes at Rocky Ridge County Park, 3699 Deininger Road, York. The first one will be on Friday, Dec. 28, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., and the second one will be on Saturday, Dec. 29, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Participants will meet at the Hidden Laurel Picnic Area in the Pheasant Pavilion. Attendees will stroll through the woods to search for gifts from Mother Nature. Afterward, they will warm up with hot
chocolate and a campfire. Participation is free, but preregistration is requested by calling 717428-1961. The last hike of the year at Nixon County Park, located on Nixon Drive, York, will take place on Sunday, Dec. 30, from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Participants will hike in the winter woods and meadows along the Old Field Trail with naturalist Andrew Wolfgang. County Park on Thursday, Dec. 27, from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Children age 8 and up may join with a birding mentor from the York Audubon Society to participate in the annual Christmas Bird Count. Mentors will lead teams while hiking, explain binoculars, and help participants identify birds and submit their finds to eBird. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Church Plans Christmas Eve Lovefeast Covenant Moravian Church, 901 Cape Horn Road, York, will host a Christmas Eve Candlelight Lovefeast on Monday, Dec. 24, at 7 p.m. The event is open to the public, and it will feature Christmas music, Scriptures, candles, fellowship, and the sharing of sugar cake and coffee during the service. The history of the Lovefeast began when Count Zinzendorf and the Moravians in Germany introduced a service of sharing food, prayer, religious conversation, and hymns in 1727.

York JCC Posts RSVP Posts Need For School Tutors Activities The York Jewish Community Center (JCC) has posted its schedule of upcoming events. The York Elks group is participating in the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks’ Drug Awareness Program. The program consists of three contests designed to help educate youths on the dangers of illegal drugs. All posters, essays, and videos should relate to the theme “Drugs Take Away …” The poster contest is open to children in grades three, four, and five. Participants must create a poster on paper or poster board up to 12 by 24 inches. The theme must be on the poster along with a picture that represents the theme. Shirley Bowers displays boxes of new clothing items that will be given to people in need this Christmas. Emmanuel’s Closet, a Dallastown ministry that provides food, clothing, and other services free of charge to those in need, has resumed its Christmas gift giveaway program. Through this program, new clothing items wrapped with Christmas paper are provided to clients for gifting to their families. This year, 467 items of clothing will be distributed. The gifts are provided by Shirley Bowers of York Township. Bowers collects unsold and overstock clothing from several Yorkarea consignment shops and other sources throughout the

Leading up to its 20th anniversary, the Cultural Alliance of York County wants to understand how it can best support and strengthen arts and culture in York County and position the organization for strength and sustainability into the next 20 years. To accomplish this, the group has worked with design thinking consultant Erin McGlaughlin to interview donors, volunteers, funded partners, nonfunded partners, and community leaders over the past year to determine how the Cultural Alliance can meet the needs of the York community now and in the years to come. Concert Will Kick Off YSO “Heroes!” Season The York Symphony Orchestra (YSO) will present a concert titled “The Eroica” on Saturday, Oct. 6, at 7:30 p.m. at the Appell Center for the Performing Arts, 50 N. George St., York. This concert is the first Classical Series performance of the 2018-19 season, “Heroes!” The Classical Series will open with Beethoven’s “Egmont” Overture, portraying the life and heroism of the 16th-century Dutch nobleman Lamoral, Count of Egmont. Egmont was a loyal subject of Philip II of Spain, yet he opposed the Spanish repression of the Netherlands. Egmont was captured and executed as a traitor for conspiring against the regime. The concert will also feature a special performance by York Symphony Orchestra principal trumpet Nathan Clark, as he performs the Trumpet Concerto by Johann Nepomuk Hummel. Clark is a York native and resides in York County with his family. He is also a member of the

Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) and the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) are reminding high school students in grades nine to 12 to submit their entries for PennDOT’s Innovations Challenge. The deadline for submission is Monday, Dec. 31. This year’s challenge asks students to look at innovative methods, aside from laws and educational campaigns, that can be developed in the next five to 10 years to get drivers to slow down in work zones. The Innovations Challenge aims to not only help students explore real transportation
challenges that PennDOT is facing, but also open their minds to the possibility of working for PennDOT after graduation. Regional winners will be selected and invited to compete in Harrisburg next year for the statewide championship. PennWorks Initiative Begins Stage The PennWorks Certificated Integrated Competitive Employment Readiness Initiative for youths and adults with physical and intellectual disabilities recently began a significant stage of its pilot. Ten student learners from Central York High School are engaged in volunteer job exploration experiences at SpiriTrust Lutheran Assisted Living along with career preparation classroom education. Central York has an additional 10 students who are preparing to enter the PennWorks program in the spring. An additional 18 student learners from the Spring Grove School District will embark on their job-shadowing experiences later in the school year. By joining explicit instruction, workplace visits, and the ability to obtain certifications and competencies, PennWorks offers a pathway to integrated, competitive employment for students and adults by supporting them in becoming active, core members of their communities. Launched by PennCares Support Services earlier this year, PennWorks is delivering training,
job exploration, certification, and employment readiness supports in collaboration with The York County Economic Alliance (YCEA), Central York School District, Spring Grove Area School District, Lincoln Intermediate Unit 12, The Center for Independent Living Opportunities, and consultancy XtraGlobex Inc. This initiative brings together partners from the business, education, and human services sectors to create a pathway for individuals with disabilities to gain and maintain competitive and integrated employment with certification that is portable. PennWorks is funded by PennCares Support Services with the objective of preparing youths and adults with disabilities to work in an integrated competitive setting, with the same career potential, earning power, and opportunities to make choices in their employment. The start of the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) application process for the 2018-19 season has begun. LIHEAP provides assistance for home heating bills to keep low-income Pennsylvanians warm and safe during the winter months. Assistance is available for renters and homeowners. Crisis and regular LIHEAP applications are available now through Friday, April 12, 2019. During the 2017-18 LIHEAP season, 344,008 households statewide received nearly $116 million in LIHEAP cash benefits. These households received an average season benefit of $337. LIHEAP benefits are paid directly to the utility company. Consumers are encouraged to enroll in LIHEAP and to explore other assistance programs available from their utilities and various nonprofit groups. Combined, these many different resources help hundreds of thousands of households and families across the commonwealth every year. The program’s goal is to prevent LIHEAP customers from entering the winter season with shut-off utilities. Eligibility for the 2018-19 LIHEAP season is set at 150 percent of the federal poverty income guidelines. Online applications for LIHEAP can be completed at www.compass .state.pa.us. Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has shared the agency’s plans for winter services and highlighted tools members of the public can use through the winter and how they can prepare for the coming season. PennDOT’s top priority is safety, and that guides winter preparations and operations. To help the public prepare for the season and share information about winter services, resources are available at www.penndot.gov/winter. The site also has a complete winter guide with detailed information about winter services in each of PennDOT’s 11 engineering districts. The public can also access travel information on nearly 40,000 roadway miles yearround at www.511PA.com, and during the winter, they can find plow truck locations and details of when state-maintained roadways were last plowed. The information is made possible by PennDOT’s Automated Vehicle Location (AVL) technology, which uses units in each of the more than 2,200 department-owned and rented plow trucks to send a cellular signal showing where a truck is located. The 40,000 miles for which PennDOT is responsible translates into 96,000 snow-lane miles - enough miles to circle the globe nearly four times. A snow lane is calculated as the miles of road multiplied by the number of lanes, which means a 1-mile section of four-lane roadway would equal 4 snow-lane miles. The department maintains roughly the same number of miles maintained by the state in New York, New Jersey, and all the New England states combined.
With $228 million budgeted for this winter’s statewide operations, PennDOT deploys about 4,500 on-the-road workers, has more than 620,000 tons of salt on hand across the state, and will take salt deliveries throughout the winter. Winter maintenance is a critical and difficult task, and drivers should always think safety first and be sure that they are giving plenty of room to PennDOT operators and other motorists. When winter weather hits, PennDOT’s primary focus is on interstates and expressways, and equipment may be redirected to those routes during significant winter events. The more traffic a roadway has, the more attention it will receive from plows, so motorists may find deeper accumulations on less-traveled routes and should adjust their driving for those conditions. If motorists encounter snow or ice-covered roads, they should slow down, increase their following distance and avoid distractions. Last winter in Pennsylvania, preliminary data shows that there were 440 crashes resulting in one fatality and 221 injuries on snowy, slushy, or ice-covered roadways where aggressive-driving behaviors such as speeding or making careless lane changes were factors. In addition to planning for winter travel conditions, motorists should prepare their vehicles for the season. Tires should be checked often for the correct level of air pressure and adequate tire tread depth to perform on ice and snow. A quick way to check tread depth is to insert a penny in the tread groove with Lincoln’s head
upside down. If the entire head can be seen, the tires are worn and traction will suffer. If the driver lives in an area prone to heavy snow, he or she may want to consider using dedicated snow tires or carrying a set of tire chains. At a minimum, all-season tires should be rated for use in mud and snow. Once vehicles are travel-ready, drivers should be prepared for winter or vehicle emergencies, especially if long-distance travel is planned. PennDOT urges motorists to carry an emergency kit. An emergency kit should include items such as nonperishable food, water, first aid supplies, warm clothes, a blanket, a cellphone charger and a small snow shovel. However, motorists should tailor their kits to any specific needs that they or their families may have. Drivers should consider adding such items as baby supplies, extra medication, pet supplies, or even children’s games. Motorists can check conditions on more than 40,000 roadway miles, including color-coded winter conditions on 2,900 miles, by visiting www.511PA.com. 511PA, which is free and available 24 hours a day, provides traffic delay warnings, weather forecasts, traffic speed information, and access to more than 860 traffic cameras. 511PA is also available through a smartphone application for iPhone and Android devices, by calling 5-1-1, or by following regional Twitter alerts accessible on the 511PA website. pepper in a large bowl, mixing lightly but thoroughly. Shape into 24 1.5-inch meatballs. Place on a rack in a broiler pan that has been sprayed with cooking spray. Bake for 13 to 15 minutes until the internal temperature reads 160 F. Meanwhile, prepare the Cranberry Barbecue Sauce. Heat oil in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Add onions and garlic; cook and stir 2 to 3 minutes, or until tender, but not brown. Add remaining ingredients, stirring to combine. Bring to a boil; reduce heat and simmer for 20 minutes, or until cranberries burst and the mixture has been reduced to a thick consistency, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat; cool slightly. Transfer mixture to blender container. Cover, allowing steam to escape. Process until smooth. Season with salt, as desired. Serve meatballs with barbecue sauce.

Great American Cleanup Results Posted Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful has announced the results of the 2018 Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful Great American Cleanup of PA that runs annually from March 1 through May 31. The event engaged 108,638 volunteers in 5,362 events across the state that focused on community greening, beautification, and cleanups. Organized groups, civic organizations, families, and friends took to Pennsylvania parks, trails, and streets to reclaim communities by picking up more than 5 million pounds of trash and planting 10,979 flowers, bulbs, and other plants in an effort to keep Pennsylvania beautiful. As in years past, all 67 counties participated in this annual community improvement event. Registration for the 2019
Great American Cleanup of PA will open in January. During this period, events registered through www.gacofpa.org will receive free bags, gloves, and vests from PennDOT District offices, as supplies last. The Cultural Alliance of York County is now accepting team submissions for YorVoice, a singing competition/talent showcase event that will be held on Saturday, March 30, 2019, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Appell Center for the Performing Arts, 50 N. George St., York. YorVoice will highlight the talent of people in York County and feature a celebrity panel of judges. One team will emerge as the YorVoice champion, and one team will earn the People’s Choice recognition. Individuals and groups are encouraged to sign up to compete. College Sets Winter Commencement

Approximately 300 students are scheduled to receive degrees from York College at the Wednesday, Dec. 19, winter commencement ceremony. The ceremony will begin at 10:15 a.m. in the Grumbacher Sport and Fitness Center’s M&T Field House. Alumnus and former trustee George Shorb will receive an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters and will present the address. Josh DeSantis, director of the Master of Education program and recipient of the Presidential Award for Teaching and Mentoring Excellence, will also address the audience. Shorb entered York Junior College in 1965. He was drafted while a student and served in the Army’s 1st Infantry Division. He received two Purple Hearts for injuries sustained in Vietnam. In 1969, Shorb returned home to York and enrolled in what had become York College. An accomplished athlete, he played soccer and was the college’s first player coach on the golf team. He earned a bachelor’s degree in management in 1972, making him a member of the first graduating class of the four-year institution. Shorb’s first job after graduating was with the Glatfelter Paper Company. He later worked in international sales as president of the Atlantic Paper Company in Philadelphia, and he is currently president and owner of First

Capital Paper Company, which he established in 2005. Shorb was the first president of the York College Collegiate Council and later served as a trustee for 24 years before retiring last spring. During his time on the board, he chaired multiple committees, including finance, student life, and greens and grounds. His leadership was instrumental in the efforts to launch the West Campus expansion and to construct the Grumbacher Sport and Fitness Center. Shorb’s passion for education, athletics and service extends beyond his involvement with York College. He is a past chair of the York Catholic school board, served for 10 years as the chair of York Youth Soccer, and currently serves as chair of Misericordia Nursing and Rehabilitation Center advisory board, most recently assisting in the $7 million capital
campaign to update and renovate the facility. An assistant professor of education, DeSantis teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in education technology, research methods, and curriculum design. As an education technologist, he researches, publishes, and presents on various topics including prekindergarten through 12thgrade technology integration programs, preparing new teachers to use technology, and augmented reality in the classroom. DeSantis earned his undergraduate degree in social studies education and master’s degree in applied history at Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania, and he received his Doctor of Education from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Before accepting a faculty position at York College, he taught social studies in the Susquenita School District.
