This space will function alongside the Arthur J. Glatfelter Institute for Public Policy, a division of the CCE that has already established itself as a key player in community advancement.

The development fund will create a regular funding source to support curricular and cocurricular programs that engage faculty and students in community projects and initiatives. Applications for funding will be adjudicated by collaborative groups that include both college and community stakeholders. These projects would focus on project-based learning and problem-solving, partnerships and initiatives, service projects, and education seminars to aid in workforce development.

Train Rides With Santa Planned Friends of the Stewartstown Railroad, 21 W. Pennsylvania Ave., Stewartstown, will host a relaxing ride through Deer Creek Valley with Santa Claus on its Santa Express. The 1943 gasoline-powered locomotive, Mighty M, will pull an authentic 1920sera passenger coach, which will be decorated for Christmas.

Concert Will Kick Off YSO “Heroes!” Season The York Symphony Orchestra (YSO) will present a concert titled “The Eroica” on Saturday, Oct. 6, at 7:30 p.m. at the Appell Center for the Performing Arts, 50 N. George St., York. This concert is the first Classical Series performance of the 2018-19 season, “Heroes!”

The Classical Series will open with Beethoven’s “Egmont” Overture, portraying the life and heroism of the 16th-century Dutch nobleman Lamoral, Count of Egmont. Egmont was a loyal subject of Philip II of Spain, yet he opposed the Spanish repression of the Netherlands. Egmont was captured and executed as a traitor for conspiring against the regime.

The concert will also feature a special performance by York Symphony Orchestra principal trumpet Nathan Clark, as he performs the Trumpet Concerto by Johann Nepomuk Hummel. Clark is a York native and resides in York County with his family. He is also a member of the

York College’s Center for Community Engagement (CCE), 59 E. Market St., York, has received support from the Powder Mill Foundation, established

by Louis and Jody Appell, to renovate the unfinished second floor of the facility for community/college collaborations and to establish a fund to support the ongoing work of the center.

The CCE acts as the primary mover in York College’s mission to partner with the community for the benefit of both students and the broader region.

This three-year gift from the Powder Mill Foundation will provide to the CCE in two ways.

First, funds will be provided for renovation of the unfinished second floor space, providing the technology, furnishings, and accommodations necessary to make the space accessible to students, faculty, and community leaders alike. Second, the gift will establish a development fund for new programs launched by the CCE to support its ongoing work.

Renovations at the CCE will provide a dedicated space outfitted with appropriate physical and human resources to attract York College faculty to the downtown. By providing this flexible space, and by providing a regular shuttle service to the

“The Nutcracker” Performances Scheduled Under the artistic direction of Lori Garling, the Midstate Ballet of Greater York Dance will present the holiday classic “The Nutcracker” on Saturday, Dec. 8, at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 9, at 2 p.m. at the Appell Center for the Performing Arts, 50 N. George St., York.

“The Nutcracker” was written

by E.T.A. Hoffman in 1816. The holiday ballet tradition takes place in two acts and tells the story of a Christmas Eve in the 1800s at the home of young Clara and her family during their holiday party. A mysterious magician, Drosselmeyer, makes a surprise visit and presents Clara with a unique Nutcracker doll.

Thus begins the magical journey of Clara and her Nutcracker prince from a battle between toy soldiers and mice to the Kingdom of Snow and the Land of Sweets.

In celebration of Midstate Ballet’s 20th anniversary of performing “The Nutcracker,” the Midstate Orchestra will be led by conductor Dr. Willis Rapp.

Thirty-three teachers and administrators representing 10 York County school districts kicked off the Leadership for Diverse Schools (LDS) Class of 2019 program with a weekend retreat. LDS is a nine-month, experiential leadership development program exploring personal bias and learning to interact more effectively with diverse populations of students, parents, and colleagues. The program, presented in partnership with the York Jewish Community Center, aims to foster understanding and acceptance so the educators can be leaders in helping to build culturally proficient communities within their districts.

Leadership York’s mission is to train, connect, and inspire individuals to serve the York community in leadership positions. The organization boasts nearly 3,700 graduates from its six programs.

Elks Lodge Plans Essay Contest Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks (BPOE) Lodge 213, 223 N. George St., York, is participating in the BPOE Grand Lodge Americanism Essay Contest. This contest gives children in grades five through eight the opportunity to express views on their pride in America. “What Makes You Proud of America” will be the essay theme.

The essays must be typed or legibly printed in ink, and the length is not to exceed 300 words. Judging criteria will be originality, development of theme, and neatness, with use of proper spelling, grammar, and punctuation. In the judging categories, fifth and sixth grades will be combined and seventh and eighth grades combined, with the top three essays selected from each group. A

certificate of participation will be given to all entrants. Monetary prizes will be awarded to the three winners of each group.

The due date for the contest will be Saturday, Dec. 15, at the lodge. All entries must have a personal information page containing the contestant’s name, address, phone number, school, teacher’s name and present grade. All entries will become the property of the Elks. The York lodge will send the selected essays on to district competition, which progresses through the state and national levels.

Plaques for first-, second-, and third-place winning essays in both groups at the national level will be given in July 2019.

Ministry Plans Benefit Concert Asaph Teaching Ministry will present a concert by Andy Stump and his Asaph Orchestra on Sunday, Nov. 25, at 6 p.m. in the Trinity Life Center at Bethlehem United Methodist Church, 109 E. Main St., Dallastown.

The concert will feature the debut of the new Asaph Choir.

Stump will also present ministry updates from Haiti.

Stump has served as a missionary in Pas-bwa-dom, Haiti, for more than 26 years. In 2012, he founded Asaph Teaching Ministry to reach the rural Haitian community through his instrumental music education program, Sunday school and Bible study, messages on Haitian radio, a soccer program, a Bible memorization

Andy Stump program, and work with Christian Aid Ministries to translate and author books and education materials in the local Creole language.

Bowling League Celebrates Organization Unveils New Brand Positioning Season

The Yorktown Senior Center held a banquet on Oct. 12 to celebrate the Wii Bowling League season. The center competes against teams from other senior centers and retirement communities. Light Up A Life Celebration Set The Light Up a Life Celebration presented by Hospice & Community Care will give community members an opportunity to recognize and celebrate their loved ones by purchasing a light. 4-H Organization Receives Donation

Linda Spahr (right) of the 4-H Clubs of York County Inc. accepted a $250 donation from Alana Eisenhour, AgChoice financial specialist. The funds were the proceeds from the AgChoice York branch’s annual customer and community appreciation event, hosted by employees and directors at the York County 4-H Center. Nearly 200 customer-owners, community members and family members enjoyed a complimentary meal, ice cream, door prizes, bounce houses and a children’s pedal tractor pull.

This is the second year the 4-H Clubs of York County Inc. received a donation as part of the event.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of York & Adams Counties, along with more than 270 Big Brothers Big Sisters affiliates across the country, recently unveiled a new look and brand repositioning with a goal of recruiting more diverse volunteers. Months of research, including focus groups with potential mentors, as well as current mentors, mentees, donors, staff members, and leadership members, showed that the brand was not effectively connecting with younger, prospective mentors or conveying the urgent mission of Big Brothers Big Sisters.

The organization is intentionally pivoting from messages of the importance of mentoring to messages of the urgent need for the adults in the community to step up to defend the potential of every child. The mission will remain the same, as will the core model of building bridges in communities by connecting one adult

Schools Host Recycling Assemblies To promote recycling and celebrate America Recycles Day on Nov. 15, the York County Solid Waste Authority (YCSWA) sponsored puppet show assembly programs in 14 York County elementary schools. The recycling-themed program was titled “Magic Pots and Recycled Bottles.” Students saw ordinary household items recycled into characters who promote care of the environment through reduction of waste, reuse, and recycling of materials.

The assembly programs ran through Friday, Nov. 16. Performances ran approximately 45 minutes and featured audience participation. YCSWA offered to sponsor up to 20 program performances for any school in York County with students in grades one through six. Fourteen schools responded to the offer and received “Magic Pots and Recycled Bottles” performances at no charge. The schools included Friendship Elementary, Kreutz Creek Elementary, Loganville Elementary, Manheim Elementary, Newberry Elementary, North Salem Elementary, Red Mill Elementary, Roundtown Elementary, St. Patrick’s, St. Rose of Lima, Southern Elementary, Valley View Elementary, Wrightsville Elementary, and Yorkshire Elementary.

Hospital Posts Traffic Changes WellSpan York Hospital is now experiencing traffic changes on its campus as a result of a construction project near the hospital’s main entrance, effective Oct. 15. The project at the north entrance of the hospital requires the partial closure of the traffic circle adjacent to the main entrance.

All vehicle traffic approaching

the main entrance of the hospital from Rathton Road will be rerouted through the first entrance of the main visitor parking garage, just across from the Medical Education Pavilion. Traffic will exit the garage to the main entrance. Motorists will then be routed around the open portion of the traffic circle, back through the garage and out toward the Rathton Road exit.

In addition, the rabbittransit bus stop as well as the stop for the shuttle running between the hospital and the Apple Hill Health Campus is temporarily relocated from the vicinity of the main entrance to the Emergency Department entrance.

The traffic detour and related changes are expected to be in place for about a year.

Steinhauser founded the York County Community Foundation’s Women’s Giving Circle in 2003 with women from the York community. It pools the dues from approximately 85 women to provide seed money for community projects. Collectively, the group has invested more than $750,000 in strategic community projects and helped to leverage millions more.

Steinhauser previously servied as the YWCA’s executive director.

Later, she served on the board of the York Foundation (now York County Community Foundation) and ultimately became its first executive director. She also served as the first non-attorney president of the York County Bar Foundation, was a longtime trustee of York College of Pennsylvania, and still helps to oversee the York College Community Opportunity Scholarship Program (YCCOSP).

Steinhauser is considered by many community leaders as the human startup capital for countless projects over the years that have raised the quality of life in the greater York community.

Contact Lens Safety Tips Posted According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), an estimated 45 million people in the United States wear contact lenses. Many consumers may not be aware that contact lenses are medical devices and are regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) through the Federal Food, Drug,

and Cosmetic Act. Additionally, the FDA states that contact lenses are not over-the-counter (OTC) devices and companies that sell them as such are misbranding the device and violating Federal Trade Commission (FTC) regulations by selling contact lenses without having a valid prescription.

Prevent Blindness, a nonprofit

eye health organization, recommends several tips for contact lens care. Individuals should always visit an eye doctor to be fitted for contact lenses before use. Contact lenses should always be worn under the supervision of an eye doctor.

Before handling contact lenses, hands should be washed with

soap and water, then rinsed and dried with a lint-free towel. Contact with water should be minimized, including removing lenses before going swimming or in a hot tub.

Individuals should never sleep in contact lenses unless authorized by an eye doctor, as this may increase the risk of infection, according to a new report from the CDC. Contact lenses should not be

Contact lenses should be removed, if the eyes become red, irritated, or painful. If vision issues continue, individuals should contact an eye doctor immediately.

One Book, One Community Selection Posted

Theater Majors Will Present Senior theater majors at York College, 441 Country Club Road, will present their capstone projects during the college’s annual Director’s Fest at 7:30 p.m. from Thursday, Nov. 29, through Saturday, Dec. 1, in the Perko Black Box Theatre. Lyle Sweppenheiser of Factoryville, last seen on stage as King Louis XVI in “Marie Antoinette,” is directing “James Franco and Me: An Unauthorized Satire” as his senior capstone. York College’s production will be the college premiere of the play written by Kevin Broccoli, who will be in residence.

Craig Babineaux of Odenton, Md., who audiences may recognize as Ira Aldridge from last spring’s “Red Velvet,” will portray the title role in “Nat Turner in Jerusalem.” Turner was an African-American slave who led a two-day rebellion of slaves and free African-Americans in Virginia in 1831.

Representatives from area libraries have announced the selection of “Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI” by David Grann as the focus of the 2019 One Book, One Community (OBOC) campaign. The book was chosen through a public vote throughout August. Voters chose from a narrowed-down list of five books determined by the book selection committee. “Killers of the Flower Moon” focuses on the nearly two dozen murders that occurred between 1920 and 1924 on the Osage tribal lands in Oklahoma during what became known as the Osage Reign of Terror.

Grann is a staff writer at The New Yorker and the author of “The Devil and Sherlock Holmes” and “The Lost City of Oz,” which has been translated into more than 20 languages. His stories have appeared in many anthologies of American writing, and he has written for numerous periodicals.

This year’s OBOC regional campaign represents collaboration between 40 libraries in Cumberland, Dauphin, Perry, and York counties and the libraries’ community partners. Many individual libraries in surrounding central Pennsylvania counties will participate.

Reading campaign organizers encourage all residents to read the book during January 2019 in preparation to attend free programs

and discussions that will be held at public libraries beginning in February, which is designated as both Library Lovers’ Month and Book Lovers’ Month. Participating libraries will stock copies of the book that may be borrowed free of charge beginning in January.

Discussion questions and related materials will be available online beginning in January. Program schedules for book discussion groups, author lectures, and other activities will be available at all participating public libraries and throughout the community. A graduate of William Penn High School in York, Mont was a gifted basketball player and musician, but he was not the best student academically. He said he felt fortunate that his family could send him to college, and he wanted to give back to those young people who might be deserving but do not have the means or the family support to get them to and through college.

As an alumnus of York College of Pennsylvania (YCP), Mont wanted other students to have an opportunity to attend YCP. The YCCF Mont Z. Shaull Scholarship Fund will provide an

annual grant to York College Community Opportunity Scholarship Program (YCCOSP). Students from William Penn High School participate in YCCOSP for their four years of high school. The program provides them with the tools necessary to prepare themselves for four years at York College. Upon successful completion of high school and the YCCOSP program at William Penn as well as acceptance into York College, full tuition, room and board at York College are provided free of charge for four years to the YCCOSP students.

TFEC Scholarship News Announced The Foundation for Enhancing Communities (TFEC) recently announced that more than $1.34 million was awarded in scholarship funds to 485 local students for the 2018-19 academic year.

More than 1,100 students applied for scholarship assistance.

TFEC offers more than 120 scholarship opportunities through various

scholarship funds and management agreements. All scholarships have been established by local individuals, corporations, or organizations to assist students with their educational pursuits.

TFEC, through its many scholarship programs, continues to assist local students each year. Scholarship applicants demonstrate individual excellence in

areas such as community service, leadership, sports, music, academics, and other unique characteristics.

Three nurses from WellSpan Health have been selected as finalists for the Nightingale Awards of Pennsylvania. Kimberly Bahata, regional director of case management operations, WellSpan Health; Vicki Fern, care coordinator, WellSpan Sechler Family Cancer Center in Lebanon; and Heather Rivera, clinical nurse, WellSpan York Hospital, are among the 27 statewide finalists in 10 award categories.

Bahata is a finalist in the Nursing Administration - Leader/Manager category, Fern in the Community Nursing category, and Rivera in the Clinical Practice RN category. The finalists were selected from more than 100 nominations received from across the state.

York College’s Center for Community Engagement (CCE), 59 E. Market St., York, will be open to the public throughout the day, due in part to the hiring of senior administrative assistant Karin Swartz.

Beginning on Monday, Nov. 26, the CCE will be open on Mondays through Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. yearround, as well as on Fridays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. from September through April and from 9 to 11 a.m. from May through August.

expands upon the history of the building as a place where leaders of York met to make plans to better the community, according to CCE dean Dominic DelliCarpini.

Swartz has experience serving the York community and York College. She has returned to York College after serving as director of communications for York Country Day School. Prior to that, she was the assistant director of the York College Fund. Before earning her master’s degree in higher education from the University of Pennsylvania, Swartz attended Ursinus College, where she studied business, economics, and theater.

She serves on the board of directors for DreamWrights Center for the Arts, the Advisory Board of York Young Professionals, and the Give Day Committee for Give Local York, and

Karin Swartz she is the founder and president of the York Fringe, which produced the City of York’s first-ever Fringe Festival in August.

Food Pantry Fundraiser Set The Well, a faith-based, local, nonprofit food pantry in York city, is holding a fall fundraiser.

All proceeds will go toward operational costs. Items for sale include wrapped apple dumplings, as well as 1- and 2pound packages of cashews, mixed nuts and walnuts.
