1035 Locust Grove Road, York, will host a chicken barbecue and bake sale on Saturday, Sept. 1. The sale will run from 11 a.m. until sold out, rain or shine. Dinners will be available on a firstcome, first-served basis. The cost of a dinner will include a halfchicken, a baked potato, applesauce, a roll, a cupcake, and a beverage. The service will include music and Scripture. A potluck dinner, s’mores, and a campfire will follow the service. Attendees are invited to bring a dish to share if they are able. On Sept. 2 and Sunday, Sept. 16, Silver Spurs will collect items for the Children’s Home of York. Needed items include school and art supplies, sports balls, toiletries, AA and AAA batteries, craft kits and athletic socks. Items are needed for male and female youths up to age 18. YMCA Branches Sparrow Place Sets “Dress For Freedom” Event Post Sports, Arts Programs The Dover and York YMCA branches are now accepting registrations for several youth and teen sports and arts programs, including an outdoor soccer league for youths ages 4 to 11, a dodgeball league for youths ages 8 to 15, girls’ intramural volleyball for youths ages 8 to 15, a variety of dance classes for youths ages 3 to 13, art classes for youths ages 6 to 10, a basketball league and instruction for youths ages 4 to 11, and Nerf tag for youths ages 6 to 11. Most programs will begin in September. The first program will begin on Saturday, Sept. 22. At Sparrow Place’s Dress for Freedom event, set for Sept. 8 in New Freedom, more than 850 dresses will be available to purchase. Proceeds will help the organization purchase a home for survivors of domestic trafficking. Sparrow Place, a local nonprofit looking to provide safe housing and restorative, trauma-informed care to female survivors of domestic sex trafficking, will host its Dress for Freedom event on Saturday, Sept. 8, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Grace Church Shrewsbury, 473 Plank Road, New Freedom. The event will offer an opportunity for girls and women of York County to feel empowered
by coming together for a cause. It will also provide a place for teenagers to pick out a dress for homecoming, the winter dance, or prom. Sparrow Place has been collecting dresses for all seasons and in all styles and sizes from the community. At the event, more than 850 dresses will be offered for nominal prices. There will be refreshments and a few surpris-

SCORE Slates Local Student Graduates Training Events Summa Cum Laude Susquehanna SCORE will offer several learning opportunities in August. There is a fee to attend, unless otherwise noted. Budgeting will be offered from 6 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 12. The program will explain how to set up a spending plan, track spending, save money, and create short- and long-term financial goals. The program is free. First Step: Starting a Small Business will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on Friday, Sept. 14. The workshop will provide aspiring small business owners with an overview of many of the issues involved in planning and launching a new business venture. Topics include personal and lifestyle issues of the entrepreneur/business owner, the legal, financial, and tax considerations of starting a small business, and steps to address business registration, government regulations, and compliance issues. Attendees will also be introduced to the steps of developing a sound business plan. The 2018 SCORE Success Breakfast will take place on Sept. 14 from 7:30 to 9 a.m. The event will be held at Wyndham Garden Hotel, 2000 Loucks Road, York. UPMC Pinnacle Receives Grant UPMC Pinnacle was one of three state organizations named to receive a PAC-MAT grant to help battle the state’s opioid addiction crisis. With PAC-MAT funding, UPMC Pinnacle will strengthen its current medical-assisted treatment (MAT) and case management services to patients within the health system’s outpatient sites in Adams, Cumberland, Dauphin, Lancaster, Lebanon, Perry, and York counties. UPMC Pinnacle Center for Addiction Recovery, 2501 N. Third St., Harrisburg, will serve as the hub and bring together primary, secondary, and tertiary care providers, as well as community and hospital administration members, to build on an addiction treatment program that increases access to care, reduces health care costs, and improves quality. This will include increasing drug and alcohol screenings within the broader network of providers, creating a Care Map for patients to research care patterns, establishing a community network of case management support, and broadening the use of MAT throughout the region by breaking down stigmas and barriers to care. In the PAC-MAT model of treatment, an addiction specialist
physician is at the center of the hub, providing expert guidance and support to primary care physicians in rural and underserved areas of the state. Serving as the spokes, primary care physicians provide direct patient care, including the medicationassisted treatment prescription. Patients also are connected to drug and alcohol counseling in their communities. These grants are funded through the second 21st Century CURES grant, a $26.5 million federal grant the state received to combat the heroin and opioid epidemic by increasing access to treatment, reducing unmet treatment need, and reducing opioid overdose-related deaths through the provision of prevention, treatment, and recovery activities for substance-use disorder. The UPMC Pinnacle Center for Addiction Recovery is a comprehensive addiction clinic. School Posts 3K Run, Futures Games York Catholic High School has announced a 3K run and Futures Games. The York Catholic Senior High Student Council will sponsor a 3K run on Saturday, Sept. 8, at 9 a.m. While participants walk or run around the York Catholic campus, they will be doused with colored powder. Organizers recommend wearing white. The registration form and fee are due on Thursday, Aug. 30. On-site registration will be available at 8 a.m. on the day of the event, but a race T-shirt will not be included. All proceeds from the event will benefit York Catholic’s Mini-THON and Four Diamonds’ fight against pediatric cancer. Ministry To Host Indoor Yard Sale Shining Light Ministries, 401 E. Locust St., Dallastown, will offer clothing and household items to community members in need this year. The ministry, affiliated with Winterstown United Methodist Church, receives donations of clothing and household items. Volunteers are needed to
sort, fold, hang, and display the items that the organization receives. Volunteer hours typically occur on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Shining Light Ministries will offer items to the public for a nominal fee. caster-area gynecologic oncologist, the ladies began meeting together in 2015 on the fourth Tuesday of each month to talk and support one another. Teal is the color that symbolizes ovarian cancer, so the ladies also sport the shade for Teal Tuesdays. “We met informally at each other’s houses but decided in addition to talking about where we were and laughing, we’d (raise) some awareness, because ovarian cancer is silent,” explained Green. “But we’re not silent about it.” To jumpstart those efforts, the Teal Sisters marched in the Millersville Parade in 2017, flanked by a teal pickup truck as they handed out teal mints and lollipops and information about ovarian cancer and its symptoms. According to Lewandowski, who leads educational presentations on the topic with other Teal Sisters, ovarian cancer is usually not detected until it has progressed to stage three or four, but early detection can mean the difference between life and death. Lewandowski references the BEAT acronym provided by the NormaLeah Ovarian Cancer Initiative when teaching others about the symptoms, which include: Bloating that is persistent; Eating less, feeling fuller; Abdominal and/or back pain; and Trouble with bladder and bowels. “The big thing is if the symptom lasts for more than two weeks,” emphasized Lewandowski. Many women are unaware that a Pap test does not test for ovarian cancer; therefore, Lewandowski urges women to be their own advocate and request an ovarian cancer screening if they are experiencing any symptoms. “All of our stories are different, but every single one of us at one point said something like, ‘Well, I thought it was just fill-in-the-blank, but then it wouldn’t go away,’” said

Lewandowski. “You don’t want to think you have cancer.” “Most of the people in the group have ovarian cancer, but we’d like to increase awareness for all types of gynecological cancers,” Lewandowski continued. “The important thing for people to know is that there’s treatment. The doctors are very conscious of the quality of your time.” Green added, “Your life does not stop. I went to the China in the middle of my chemotherapy. There are options out there, and if one doesn’t work, you try something else.” The Teal Sisters make it a point to say they are “living with cancer” rather than the commonly heard alternative of “dying with cancer.” “We’re not gloom and doom,” said Radziewicz. In September, which is National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, the Teal Sisters will take part in Turn the Towns Teal, a national campaign to promote awareness of the symptoms and risk factors associated with ovarian cancer. The ladies encourage individuals, businesses, and communities throughout Lancaster and York to get involved by dis-
playing biodegradable teal ribbons on their property. Some towns participate by turning fountains teal or lighting up buildings at night with teal spotlights. Lewandowski recalled that the Pennsylvania State Capitol was aglow in teal for the month of September last year. The Teal Sisters will be tying teal ribbons along Hellam Street in Wrightsville and, they hope, in as many other locations as possible. The York Division of Easterseals Western and Central Pennsylvania held its annual staff training at the York Alliance Church in York on May 31 and June 1. Therapeutic recreation staff members participated in adapted daily living skills training and behavior management training. The two-day training session is designed to help staff members improve their communication with and compassion for individuals with disabilities and to help staff members provide an enjoyable and safe environment for their campers and community-based program participants. Guest speakers included Greg Anderson, a local principal with expertise in behavior management, and Regi Theodore-Wise, a local adult who has autism. Theodore-Wise shared about her own challenges and perspective. The York Division of Easterseals specializes in therapeutic recreation camping programs and community-based programs for individuals with any disability or special need. The camp offers a sense of independence while helping participants improve their social, emotional, and physical well-being. The annual twoday event provides comprehensive training, and routine training sessions are held throughout the year for incoming staff and volunteers. Sister Pamela Smith will be the keynote speaker at this year’s annual Harrisburg Diocese Charismatic Renewal Day of Renewal, to be held at the Diocesan Center, 4800 Union Deposit Road, Harrisburg, on Saturday, Sept. 22, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The theme of this year’s Day of Renewal is “Wind and Fire of the Holy Spirit.” Smith is secretary for Education and Faith Formation for the Diocese of Charleston, S.C., overseeing Catholic schools, parish religious education, youth ministry, young adult ministry and campus ministry across the state. She holds a doctorate in theology from Dusquesne University, has authored 12 books and numerous articles and poems, and is part of a volunteer ministry with the St. Francis Center at St. Helena Island. For more than 40 years, she has served in education and administration in several dioceses. Smith’s morning keynote address will be “The Holy Spirit and Biblical Living.” The Rev. Frank Karwacki, diocesan liaison for the Charismatic Renewal for the Diocese of Harrisburg and pastor of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Mount Carmel, will celebrate Mass following the keynote address. Smith’s afternoon presentation, “Discernment and Healing,” will be followed with a healing session with prayer teams available for individual prayer. The Day of Renewal will include two breakout sessions as well. A Newcomers’ Session will be held by service team members Bernice and Marty White for those who are new to Catholic Charismatic Renewal. A Young Adult Session will be hosted by the Rev. Dwight Schlaline, pastor of Our Lady of the Visitation Catholic Church in Shippensburg and chaplain for Catholic Campus Ministries at Shippensburg University.
