The York Fair, which has been in existence since 1765, will hold its 2019 installment from Friday, Sept. 6, to Sunday, Sept. 15, at the York Fairgrounds, 334 Carlisle Ave., York. Gates will open at 11 a.m. on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays and at noon all other days.

There are admission and parking fees, with children age 5 and under admitted for free. Various admission specials will be offered throughout the fair, including discounted admission on Sept. 6; free admission for first responders, veterans, and active-duty military personnel on Heroes Appreciation Day, Sunday, Sept.

8; free admission for senior citizens with a Medicare card on

Senior Citizens’ Day, Tuesday, Sept. 10, from noon to 4 p.m.; free admission for one adult with a preschooler on Preschool Pals Day, Friday, Sept. 13; and buyone-get-one-free admission on Sept. 15.

Included with admission will be Fairgrounds Fun, which is new this year. This entertainment will include a daily firefighter training show, Kachunga and the Alligator, the Wild Wheels Thrill Show, and Max Power and Nitro, a nine-foot robot and its monster truck. There will also be racing pigs and dogs, model trains, glass-blowing demonstrations, Goat Mountain antics, and more.

The Bobcat of York Grandstand Stage will host entertainment

throughout the week as well. Featured acts will include Brad Paisley with Payton Smith and Tyler Rich on Sept. 6; Darci Lynne on Saturday, Sept. 7; Bethel Music on Monday, Sept. 9; Tesla, Jackyl, and Kix as part of Triple Play Tuesday on Sept. 10; Let Freedom Ring, a free show with Kayla Kroh, Shatter X, Stoney Lonesome, and David Bray, on Wednesday, Sept.

11; Outlaws & Renegades on Tuesday, Sept. 12; and Brantley Gilbert with Muscadine Bloodline on Sept. 13.

On Heroes Appreciation Day, Sept. 8, various high school bands will perform at the grandstand throughout the day. An emergency services salute parade will travel through the fair-

grounds from 4:30 to 6 p.m. and will end at the grandstand. Fiera Latina, a free show, will be performed at 7 p.m.

The fair will also feature rides, exhibits, livestock shows, food, a demolition derby, the Monster Truck Fall Bash, and more. The Ag Education Center will be set up in the MidAtlantic Industrial Memorial Hall West and will feature many family activities, including a photo booth, a scavenger hunt, a coloring wall, a duck slide, the 4-H Farm Animal Learning Center, and the Story Barn. The Animal Birthing Center will return as well.

Native Plant Sale Slated The Penn State Master Gardeners and others will hold a Native Plant and Yard Sale on Saturday, Sept. 7, from 8:30 a.m. to noon at the York County Annex, 112 Pleasant Acres Road, York. The public is invited.

The York County Annex was sold last year, and the offices within the Annex are moving late this year. For decades, the Penn State Master Gardeners’ MAEscapes program has established a native plant garden surrounding the Annex. These landscapes cannot be re-established at the new site in the near future, so the Master Gardeners have scheduled a “plant rescue” to preserve as many plants as possible.

Master Gardeners will dig plants from the gardens, and members of the public may pur-

chase the plants at a set cost per plastic grocery bag. The Master Gardeners will also offer many other items for sale, including books, plastic sheet compost bins, craft items, some building materials, shop and outdoor lights, and a microwave table.

Some of the offices within the Annex, including the York County Conservation District, may also participate in the yard sale, offering visitors a chance to “rescue” or purchase many office supplies and educational resources that cannot be taken to the new location at the former Graham building on Pleasant Valley Road.

YMCA Posts Youth Programs Community Blood Drive Scheduled The YMCA of York and York County is accepting registrations for its fall and winter youth programs at all four branches. The YMCA of York and York County will host its annual LIVESTRONG at the YMCA Golf and Gala. UPMC Pinnacle is one of the presenting sponsors.

The golf event will be hosted at the Hanover Country Club, 200 Water St., Abbottstown, on Friday, Sept. 27. Each year, more than 100 golfers play for a variety of contests throughout the event. The day of golf will be followed by a golf awards dinner.

The gala will be held on Saturday, Oct. 19, at the Wyndham Garden York, 2000 Loucks Road, York. The event will begin at 5 p.m. with a social hour.

Dinner will begin at 5:45 p.m. with the program beginning shortly after. The event will also include testimonials from cancer survivors, a live band, a disc jockey, a photo booth, and live and silent auctions.

The event will highlight the past, present, and future of the LIVESTRONG at the YMCA program and discuss its goal of improving the lives of cancer survivors as they regain their physical, emotional, and spiritual strength. Food Truck Festival Posted

Labor Day Yard Sale Planned Salem Lutheran Church, 99 York Road, Jacobus, will host a Labor Day yard sale at its Grove Building from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 2. Household items, outdoor items, antiques, food and baked goods will be available.

Live music will be played throughout the event at the main stage by the basketball courts and by a traveling musician around the park. The courts will be left open for neighborhood play. This year’s What the Food Trucks grand marshal is Korey Warner Knight, widow of York supporter Douglas Knight, who died at the beginning of 2019.

Korey and Doug were major supporters of the food truck festivals since the beginning. The grand marshal has the privilege to skip the lines, as do members of the

Legion of Eats - people marked by their masks for donations made during Give Local York who each have a one-time line skipper pass.

Parking around the outside of the park is prohibited after 6 a.m. on Sept. 1. Cars still there will be towed by the York City Police.

Parking shuttles will run from the York College of Pennsylvania Rail Trail lot and the Susquehanna Commerce Center to the park from 30 minutes before to 30 minutes after the event.

This event is organized by CrocodileDog Marketing, which has been running various events in and around the city of York for more than 10 years.

Center Plans Painting Classes Stewartstown Senior Center, 26 S. Main St., Stewartstown, will offer watercolor painting classes on Tuesdays from Sept. 3 to Oct. 22. The beginner class will run from 9:15 to 11:15 a.m., and the intermediate class will be held from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m.

Attendees will learn the basics of watercolor techniques and put them into practice in landscapes.

The What the Food Trucks festival will take place on Sunday, Sept. 1, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Penn Park, 100 E. College Ave., York. Last year, roughly 20,000 people visited the event to support York city by patronizing local and regional food trucks, vendors, breweries and wineries.

At this year’s event, more than 40 food trucks will line three sides of Penn Park. The event is free for all, and food and beverages are pay-as-you-go. The event will feature a beer garden, as well as a limited selection of beverages. No outside alcohol is permitted.

This year’s Community Corner will feature more than 12 nonprofits and organizations that will have information about the services they provide, as well as interactive activities for children.

When the mixture forms pea size crumbles, it is ready. Spread the crumble on the top of the tart in a thick layer. (Again, any leftover can be used to top a small dish of cobbler.)

United Way of York County recognized four volunteers with awards at the organization’s annual meeting on June 17.

United Way staff and board members, along with partner agency representatives, gathered at Crispus Attucks Association to celebrate the dedicated volunteers and the partnerships that help United Way work to build a stronger, caring community.

Anne Druck, president of United Way of York County, noted that the award recipients were chosen from among the nearly 2,000 individuals who volunteered for the organization in 2018.

Christi Brown was named Volunteer of the Year. Senior director of volunteer engagement for WellSpan Health, Brown earned her Bachelor of Science in business administration from Elizabethtown College and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in health care administration at Drexel University. She is active in the York County community, currently serving in several leadership roles, such as the chair of Women United/United Way of York County, co-chair of WellSpan’s 2018 Campaign, treasurer of the Pennsylvania Association of Healthcare Volunteers Resources Professionals (PAHVRP), treasurer of the Council for Certification in Volunteer Administration (CCVA) and a sustainer with the Junior League of York. Brown was recently received the 2018 Evelyn Burston Award from PAHVRP in recognition of her passion for volunteer management and community service.

Bob Breighner received the Distinguished Service Award.

Breighner is the vice president of compliance and audit services for Select Medical Corporation, where he has worked since 2001 after a decade with Susquehanna Pfaltzgraff Co. He has been married to his wife, Julieann, a teacher’s aide at Dallastown Elementary, for 28 years, and has three sons - Derek, Joshua and Ryan. Bob began his service with United Way of York County as a loaned campaign executive in the mid-1990s. He has served as an allocations and agency review volunteer for approximately 15 years, serving as a panel chair for 10 years before assuming the role of division chair and overseeing the entire allocations process in tandem with United Way’s community impact staff.

In addition to his long record of service with allocations and agency review, Breighner joined the board of directors for United Way of York County in 2016 and currently serves on the executive committee as community impact chair.

The board of directors for Latinos Unidos was honored with the Community Build Award. Latinos Unidos of York aims to empower the Latino community and strengthen bonds to promote social, civic and economic integration of Latino families in the York area.

The organization, led by the board of directors, seeks to create a vibrant, connected Latino community that reaches its full potential, achieves educational and economic success and develops skills to transform lives. From the launch of First Friday Latino in early 2018, a celebration of culture that regu-

larly features salsa dancing lessons, food and music, Latinos Unidos has served as a connector and hub for Latino residents in York County. United Way of York County was proud to see the board’s eagerness to develop recommendations and take action based on the York County Hispanic and Latinx Assessment released in 2018 and to lay the foundation for greater economic and social integration into York city and York County.

Mosquito Help Is Available Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection Vector Management is reporting the first York County mosquito sample testing positive for West Nile Virus in 2019. Additional mosquito surveillance, sampling and larval control are being performed as necessary by the Mosquito Surveillance Program and the Department of Environmental Protection in Springettsbury Township.

The York County Mosquito Surveillance Program recommends residents be proactive by inspecting their yards and take a few minutes to clean up and reduce yard clutter. Residents may also purchase a variety of mosquito control and repellent products from most home and garden centers. Performing a community-wide cleanup is the only way to eliminate most mosquito concerns. Residents are urged to contact their local municipality to help promote cleaning up to reduce mosquito concerns and disease risk. Storm

water management systems can sometimes contribute to mosquito issues and are also routinely monitored by the Mosquito Surveillance Program.

Residents should also use repellents when spending time outside. For individuals who do not like to use repellents, the department recommends taking an electric fan outside with them. As a last resort, residents can purchase insecticides from garden centers and hardware stores to spray in their own yards, but they need to be sure to follow the label instructions.

York County residents may report mosquito concerns through www.westnile.state.pa.us. They can also contact the York County Mosquito Surveillance Program by calling 717-840-2375 or emailing LMGraybill@yorkcountypa.gov.

One-Room School Alumni Consider Reunion

Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, in partnership with several York-area food-based nonprofits and the York County Community Foundation’s Memorial Health Fund, recently released a report titled “A Seat at the Table: Evaluating the Charitable Food System in York County, Pennsylvania.”

Annual Golf Tournament Set York Catholic High School (YCHS) will host its 29th annual Golf Tournament on Monday, Sept.

16, at the Out Door Country Club, 1157 Detwiler Drive, York. Registration for the four-person scramble tournament will start at 7:30 a.m., with play beginning at 8 a.m.

The cost per person includes green fees, cart rental, refresh-

TrueNorth Names Chief Operating Officer After an extensive executive search, TrueNorth Wellness Services has appointed Elspeth Williams to the role of chief operating officer (COO).

As COO, Williams will plan and direct all aspects of the agency’s operational policies, objectives, and initiatives. She will develop new policies and procedures for operational processes to ensure optimization and compliance with stablished standards and regulations, and she will represent the organization in its relationships with consumers, suppliers, government agencies, professional societies, the community, and various other organizations.

Starting at TrueNorth in 2003, Williams has had increasing roles of responsibility. She began her career as a behavioral therapist, moved into a school-based therapist position and was quickly named director of the capital area (Harrisburg). Her most recent role has been director of children’s services, overseeing services provided in the home, school, community, and autism center settings.

During Williams’ tenure, the Functional Family Therapy program doubled in size to serve five new counties, school-based therapy services expanded to more than 25 additional school buildings in the Harrisburg area, and applied behavior analysis services expanded as the number of credentialed staff has increased.

A licensed Pennsylvania behavior specialist and board-certified behavior analyst, Williams received her Bachelor of Arts from Lebanon Valley College and her Master of Education in educational psychology from Temple University. She is an active member of the Rehabilitation and Community Providers Association (RCPA), a

CASA volunteers provide a voice for those in the child welfare system by serving as the eyes and ears of the court. Advocates are appointed by a judge, gather information, develop recommendations that are in the best interest of the child, and provide a detailed report to the court.

All potential volunteers go through an application and screening process. They are carefully selected for intensive training. CASA volunteers are empowered and supported as they meet with the child and individuals involved to better assess and accommodate for the child’s needs.

Bowman noted that 26 plants, many of which are native species, were planted with the help of 17 volunteers from her GCY committee. She thanked them by presenting each volunteer with a pair of pink gardening gloves. Bowman said that GCY has pledged to maintain the garden. GCY’s hanging baskets in downtown York show GCY’s ongoing commitment to the local community.

Garden Club Federation of Pennsylvania past president Chris Leskosky shared that her sister fought breast cancer for eight years. Her local club also has a cancer garden.

Rudy Park contributed to the project by allowing the pink bench, rather than a blue bench; supplying workers; and delivering water trucks. Only yellow daylilies from the original planting break the pink color code. Also remain-

Jess Dubbs contributed graphic design work, including the part of the Pink Power logo appearing on the bench plaque, and also attended the dedication to take photographs.

At the end of the dedication,

eight breast cancer survivors stepped forward and received two pink roses each. Pink cookies and pink lemonade were served by the GCY committee.

To find the Breast Cancer Meditation Garden, visitors may enter Rudy Park at the Mundis Race Road pavilion entrance. The garden is located just past the observatory.
