Salem United Church of Christ, 24 Franklin St., Jacobus, will honor the makers of its stained glass windows during its annual anniversary service on Sunday, July 14, at 10 a.m. The church purchased a new organ in 1990. At this time, the congregation was told by organ companies that the curtains on 18 large windows in the sanctuary would hinder the organ’s acoustics. The pastor, the Rev. Fred Walthour, had done stained glass as a hobby for several years. His teacher, Peggy Frantz, of Ric-O-Che Stained Glass in Jacobus, suggested that Walthour teach church members how to make stained glass windows. More than 30 people ranging in age from 12 to 73 volunteered to help with the project. During the nine-year project, congregants built 18 windows in the sanctuary focused on the life and saying of Jesus Christ. They later created large windows in two entrances focused on “The Garden of Eden” and the hymn “Rejoice, Ye Pure in Heart” and the chorus “Jesus Loves the Little Children of the World.”

During the anniversary service, the congregation will recognize this group of window makers on the anniversary of the unique project. There will also be a dedication of three windows made this year for the community room. The new windows were mainly made by new artisans. The public is invited to an open house from 2 to 3 p.m. to view the windows. The sanctuary will also be open for those who may have never seen the original windows.

Salem United Church of Christ in Jacobus will honor the makers of its stained glass windows during its annual anniversary service on Sunday, July 14. In the 1990s, church members made 18 windows, including this panel, one of three depicting the theme “Jesus Calling His Disciples.”

YCSWA Holds Hazardous Waste Collection The York County Solid Waste Authority (YCSWA) held a free residential Household Hazardous Waste Collection Program on May 4 in Manchester Township. The event removed 13.35 tons of household hazardous waste from the waste stream. Household hazardous waste includes any products from the home that are corrosive, such as drain cleaners or bleach; flammable, like gasoline; reactive, as in chemistry kits; or toxic, such as pesticides. The program benefits York County by identifying hazardous wastes found in the home and providing an opportunity to manage these materials in a safe

and efficient manner. York County homeowners or residential tenants who missed the May 4 event may take advantage of an option called At Your Door Special Collection, which enables York County residents to call 800-4497587 to schedule a home pickup of household hazardous waste. Residents may schedule two pickups per home per calendar year and can request up to two “kit bags” per pickup to fill with acceptable household hazardous products. At Your Door Special Collection pickups require a small copay. Readers may visit www.wmatyourdoor.com for more information.

“Healthy Steps” Exercise Program Planned The York County Area Agency on Aging announced the return of Healthy Steps in Motion (HSIM), a falls-prevention exercise program for adults age 60 and older. This evidence-based series is designed especially for older adults who have concerns about falling and are interested in exercise-focused strength training, as well as balance improvement. This free program starts with a warmup, followed by strength and balance exercises and ending with a cool-down stretch. HSIM strives to reduce the risk of falling by building body strength, increasing flexibility, and improving balance. Participants will learn about exercise basics and safety, set-

ting goals, aerobic walking, and more. In addition, they will be assessed for fall risk and be given a free participant’s guide and other resources. Classes will be held at two locations and are free and open to the public. Classes will be held at SpiriTrust Lutheran Zimmerman Place, 800 Bollinger Drive, Shrewsbury, from 2 to 3 p.m. on Monday, July 22; Friday, July 26; Tuesday, July 30; Friday, Aug. 2; Monday, Aug. 5; Tuesday, Aug. 13, Friday Aug. 16; and Monday, Aug. 19. Red Lion Native Serves Aboard Navy Ship Fireman Joshua Koester, a native of Red Lion and a 2018 graduate of Red Lion Area Senior High School, said becoming a sailor was something he had always wanted to do. His father was a nuclear mechanic on submarines in the ’90s. Now, less than a year later after graduating from high school and half a world away at Fleet Activities Yokosuka, Koester serves aboard the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Curtis Wilbur, patrolling one of the world’s busiest maritime regions as part of

the leading edge of U.S. 7th Fleet. Koester is a machinist’s mate aboard the ship, which is based in Yokosuka, Japan, and is one of several in its class forwarddeployed to the region. Right now, Koester is going through the time-honored requirement for new sailors to spend time as a temporary food service attendant, where he is cleaning dishes, serving the crew and keeping the mess deck clean. Once he pays his dues on the mess deck, he will have the opportunity to begin work on the Navy’s complex vessel propulsion systems.

York Catholic High School’s Manuel Montes (front, center) has committed to continue his education and play football in the Middle Atlantic Conference for the Monarchs of Division III King’s College in Wilkes-Barre. He was congratulated by (front, from left) his parents, Manuel Sr. and Jennifer Montes of Red Lion; (back) Kevin Bankos, York Catholic athletic director; Eric Depew, York Catholic football head coach; and his grandfather, Mike Lonkowski. Manny was a threeyear varsity player for the Fighting Irish football team and was a member of the 2016 and 2018 District III-AA Football Championship teams. He was named 2018 Division III Coaches All-Star First Team Wide Receiver. While at York Catholic, he also competed in basketball, baseball, and indoor track. He plans to study engineering at King’s.

The York County Astronomical Society (YCAS) will host a public starwatch at their observatory at John C. Rudy County Park, 400 Mundis Race Road, York, on Saturday, July 13, at 8 p.m. The event is free and open to the community. Hot beverages and light refreshments will be available. The evening will begin with a screened astronomical presentation on Apollo 11’s 50th anniversary and current events and the July night sky. Guests will then be guided on a tour of the sky through one of the club’s telescopes. Attendees will be shown a host of celestial objects to include the planet Jupiter, the Andromeda galaxy, star clusters, Ring Nebula, and much more. If it is clear, all activities will occur as scheduled. If it is completely cloudy or raining, the indoor activity of a screened astronomical presentation will occur as scheduled. There is no admission cost, but donations will be accepted. When arriving at the park, attendees should use the main park entrance, not the administrative office entrance, and follow the signs and lights to the event. More information on planetarium shows, special classes, and other YCAS events is available at www.facebook.com/astroyork.
