The Ma & Pa Railroad Heritage Village will open for its summer season on Sunday, June 2, from 1 to 5 p.m.

Trains will depart at 15 minutes after each hour.

The site has recovered from flooding that took place on Aug. 31, 2018. The excursion rail line sustained severe damage due to flood waters, and the storm washed out hundreds of feet of track and a bridge. Two additional bridges along the 3.6-mile line endured substantial damage.

Volunteers and a contractor worked the past eight months clearing the track, making necessary repairs and, in some cases, rebuilding entire sections. All told, the workers restored more than 900 feet of track and bridges. Visitors this summer will again be able to enjoy the scenic train ride from Muddy Creek Forks to just south of Laurel.

Christ Lutheran Church of Spry’s Strawberry Festival will take place on Saturday, June 1. The event will feature a live auction.

Christ Lutheran Church of Spry, 2385 S. Queen St., York, will celebrate its 51st Strawberry Festival on Saturday, June 1, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The event will be held rain or shine.

The event will feature strawberries, shortcake, and ice cream, as well as homemade chicken corn soup by the

bowl or quart, hot dogs, hamburgers, nacho chips and cheese, chips, desserts, and beverages. A bake sale will take place as well.

Girl Scouts in the Heart of Pennsylvania has announced that Dana Cutti, 17, of Red Lion has earned the Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest honor a Girl Scout can earn. The award signifies that the Scout has made a meaningful, sustainable change to her community and the world. Cutti is a junior at Red Lion Area Senior High School.

To help improve her school’s orchestra, Cutti created a library of orchestra music materials. She also created an advanced music material inventory system, which required her to code each individual piece, organize the codes in a spreadsheet, and create an information guide to remain in the orchestra room for years to come. Susquehanna Heritage will hold The River Experience, its major annual fundraising event, on Friday, June 7, from 6 to 9 p.m. in the River Room at John Wright Restaurant, 234 N. Front St., Wrightsville.

The event will feature tastings of savory and sweet treats from local restaurants, a river-centered silent auction, live music and river views from the patio.

Auction items will include boat rentals, alpaca items, custom glassware, a bicycle tune-up, two nights of lodging, a petroglyph tour, paddle excursions and sailing lessons.

More than 3,000 specialty vehicles will be on hand at the York Expo Center, 334 Carlisle Ave., York, from Friday, May 31, through Sunday, June 2, for the 46th annual Street Rod Nationals East. This will be the 39th time the vintage car show has been held in York, and alltime highs for participants and spectaculars are expected. A large part of the York Expo Center will be utilized for the event, as well as most of the buildings, which will house manufacturer and dealer displays and other attractions.

The host organization, National Street Rod Association (NSRA), defines a street rod as a modernized vintage vehicle that must be of pre1949 manufacture. These vehicles are equipped with the lat-

est options available on the newest model vehicles, including but not limited to brakes, air conditioning, cruise control, and tilt steering wheels. Most of the vehicles attending have an updated engine and drive train in order to safely maintain the speeds traveled by more modern vehicles.

The event will also include muscle cars: factory-produced high-horsepower machines from the 1960s, ’70s, and ’80s, along with the classic cars of the 1950s.

The NSRA Street Rod Nationals East will feature a mix of old and new vehicles, and the national gathering will boast a wide variety of vintage automobiles. The event is open to the public, and spectators may walk up to the vehicles to check them out up close. There is an

Fire Company Awards Memorial Scholarship Citizens Volunteer Fire Company of Fawn Grove has established a memorial scholarship in memory of fallen firefighter Denny Devoe. Devoe was a member of Citizens Volunteer Fire Company as well as a professional firefighter for the city of Harrisburg.

The scholarship of $500 will be awarded to a junior or regular member applicant who is enrolled in an institution of higher learning. The selection

committee consists of the chief, president, and chairperson of the trustees or their designate.

Joe Devilbiss, scholarship coordinator, indicated that this year’s scholarship was awarded to Hailey Bankert. Hailey is the daughter of Chuck and Kim Bankert of New Park. Upon graduating from Kennard-Dale High School, Hailey plans to attend Harford Community College and pursue a career in pediatric nursing.

Scouts Earn Eagle Scout Rank Five Scouts from local troops have earned the Eagle Scout Award, the highest award in Scouts BSA. Wesley Bonner, Gavin Bonner, Matthew Johnson, and Ben Patterson from Troop 25 in East York, as well as Anthony “AJ ” Kalligonis from Troop 49 in Hellam all received their awards from Troop 25 Scoutmaster Perry Bevivino and Troop 49 Scoutmaster George Gayman during Troop 25’s Court of Honor held on Feb. 25. To become an Eagle Scout, a Scout must earn at least 21 merit badges, hold various leadership positions within his troop, and complete a service project.

Wesley, son of Kenneth and Diane Bonner, repaired the south observation deck at Rocky Ridge Park. He led fellow Scouts and adults in replacing, sanding, and staining wooden boards as well as installing a wheelchair ramp for a total of 130 man hours. Starting out as a Tiger Cub, Wesley has been a Scout for 10 years and has earned 29 merit badges. Wesley is a sophomore at York Catholic High School and plans to attend college to study dermatology.

Gavin, son of Kenneth and Diane Bonner, renovated an observation deck at Richard Nixon County Park. He led fellow Scouts and adults in replacing, sanding, and staining wooden boards as well as installing several benches on the deck for a total of 119 man hours. Starting out as a Tiger Cub, Gavin has been a Scout for 10 years and has earned 29 merit badges. Gavin is a sophomore at York Catholic High School and plans to attend college to study engineering.

Matthew, son of Steve and Jane Johnson, renovated three picnic table-style structures at William H. Kain Park at the Lake Redman Activity Area. He led fellow Scouts and adults in removing the existing deteriorated base and all the bricks from the

foundation, leveling and securing the benches and the roof, reframing the bases, and replacing the bricks with leveled-out stone for a total of 85 man hours. Starting out as a Tiger Cub, Matthew has been a Scout for 10 years and has earned 24 merit badges. Matthew is a junior at Central York High School and plans to attend college.

Ben, son of Jeff and Kelly Patterson, built two canopycovered picnic table-style structures at Rocky Ridge Park. He led fellow Scouts and adults in drilling post holes, assembling the wooden tables and canopies, and installing the structures where the York County Parks Department specified for a total of 216 man hours. Starting out as a Tiger Cub, Ben has been a Scout for 12 years and has earned 29 merit badges. Ben is a senior at Central York High School and hopes to attend Millersville University to study elementary and secondary education.

AJ, son of Jerry Kalligonis and Melanie Gardner, built new kayak racks at William H. Kain Park at the Lake Redman Activity Area. He led fellow Scouts and adults in assembling and installing the structures where the York County Parks Department specified with nearly 200 man hours. Starting out as a Tiger Cub, AJ has been a Scout for 10 years, has earned 40 merit badges, and is a member of the Order of the Arrow. AJ is a sophomore at Dallastown Area High School and hopes to attend Penn State University.

All the newly recognized Eagle Scouts thanked their parents, their respective Scoutmasters, and fellow Scouts for their help in completing their projects and their Eagle requirements. In recognition of their achievements, each received a Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition from Rep. Scott Perry and an American flag that had flown over the United States Capitol.

In its third year, the York County “No Excuses: Youth Traffic Safety” Billboard Design Contest invited York County high school students who have a strong belief in traffic safety and who want to make a difference among their peers to enter. For this campaign, teenagers were approached through their high school faculty and administration to design a billboard that targeted one or more of the following traffic safety messages: discourage distracted driving, encourage seat belt use, and/or discourage aggressive/reckless driving.

The winning design was created by four students from Northern High School. Those students are Jack Phipps, Ryan Allen, Reid Weber, and Ian Hall. The winning

entry addresses both distracted driving and distracted pedestrians. The four students are featured in the actual design. Their entry was the favorite among all the student judges.

Northern High School will receive a $1,000 mini-grant to be used toward traffic safety programming. All four of the designers will each receive $100 for his contribution to the winning design.

This billboard was displayed along I-83 North, just south of Exit 32 (Newberrytown), during the month of April - National Distracted Driving Awareness Month.

The site was chosen because it was identified as being a high-incidence roadway for crashes involving teenage drivers, according to PennDOT crash data analysis.

The second-place design was created by Neharika Noor and Ally Sipe, two students from Central York High School. Central will receive a $500 mini-grant to be used for traffic safety programming. Although the secondplace design was not to be made into a billboard, it was to be used extensively in other media, including social media.

Judges for the contest came from two groups: 1) professionals and experts in the field of traffic safety, marketing, planning departments, and media, and 2) high school students for their peer perspective. The student judging results weighed heavily in determining the winning entry, because they are the target audience and advocates.

Hackett Joins Regional Team Ben Franklin Technology PArtners of Central and Northern Pennsylvania recently announced the addition of Joseph Hackett to its team in the York/Adams region. Hackett will serve in the capacity of executive-in-residence, a role in which he will mentor and support emerging tech startups seeking early-stage investment from Ben Franklin while also helping to identify second-stage sources of capital for the portfolio’s growth-based companies.

Hackett has deep roots in both the York and entrepreneurial communities. His presence in the York area, as well as the office

hours he will have on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons at the J.D. Brown Center for Entrepreneurship at York College of Pennsylvania, will help Ben Franklin identify, fund, support, and grow the entrepreneurial pipeline in York and Adams counties.

After graduating from Bloomsburg University, Hackett began his career in banking as a commercial lender and was promoted from junior lending officer to vice president in five years. Later positions included vice president and private banking relationship manager at Fulton Bank’s Clermont Wealth

Strategies and senior private banking officer and vice president at PeoplesBank.

In 2015, Hackett became the chief operating officer with MI-12 Ventures LLC in central Pennsylvania. In this position, he was responsible for the overall management of the investment process. Currently, Hackett is also the managing partner of Aim Advisors LLC, where he has developed strategic relationships with experienced tax and planning organizations, including valuation firms, estate planning practices, and specialty accounting groups in Pennsylvania and Maryland.

YCAAA Seeks Volunteers The York County Area Agency on Aging (YCAAA) is seeking volunteers for its Friendly Visitor and Financial Counselor programs. There are needs throughout York County.

A volunteer friendly visitor is someone who is willing to share an hour or two each week with a homebound older adult. These visits offer an opportunity for social contact, whether spent

reading, writing letters, playing cards or board games, or just chatting.

Financial counselors visit older adults on a regular basis and assist them with budgeting, balancing a checkbook, paying bills, and other financial functions. Financial counselors work closely with the consumer’s care manager.

There are volunteer opportunities for both men and women

age 18 or older who like to help others. No experience is needed.

YCAAA provides training for both programs.

Music Club Gives Awards The following awards were presented by the Red Lion Area Choral Music Club at the department’s 93rd annual spring concert.

service to the mixed chorus.

The Choral “Booster” Award was presented to Jennifer Rowe, recognizing her for her countless hours given to the choral music club over the past years. Rotary Club Honors Students Castriota Receives Award Louie Castriota, founder and chairman of the board of Leg Up Farm in York, has been awarded the Rite Aid Foundation’s KIDCHAMP Award for his vision and commitment to provide children with special needs a comprehensive, convenient and centralized location to receive specialized therapy. In recognition of his service, Castriota received a $10,000 donation to Leg Up Farm from the Rite Aid Foundation and gift cards during a special ceremony at Leg Up Farm.

Leg Up Farm is a nonprofit therapy center for infants, children, adolescents and young adults up to the age of 21 with special needs. The center combines a state-of-the-art medical setting with a child-friendly environment that caters to both children and their families. Leg Up Farm provides comprehensive therapies all under one roof by bringing therapists of different specialties together to create customized programs with a team approach.

The foundation created the KIDCHAMP Award in 2017 to recognize individuals in communities served by Rite Aid. Winners have made a meaningful difference in the lives of youths by advocating for their health and wellbeing, championing education and academic growth and creating safe environments for children and teenagers to live and grow. Castriota is the fifth recipient to receive the award.

Castriota and his wife, Laurie, first had the idea to open Leg Up Farm as a therapeutic riding center in 1997, merging their love of animals and children. Six months after their vision came to fruition, their daughter Brooke was diagnosed with mitochondrial disease, which causes both cognitive and motor function delays.

As they searched for the best treatment options for Brooke, the Castriotas were prompted to significantly widen their vision for Leg Up Farm.

Castriota officially opened Leg Up Farm in 2010, raising more than $10 million in funding through a combination of private contributions, public fundraising events and federal, state and foundation grants. Leg Up Farm provides physical, occupational, speech, and aquatic therapy; counseling; therapeutic horseback riding; and nutritional, education and recreational programming all under one roof. Since opening its doors, Leg Up Farm has increased capacity. To date, the facility has served more than 2,700 children with special needs and their families. The Liars Contest is a juried competition. Storytellers must apply and submit a video representative of their work. Ten contestants will be selected to participate in the competition at the festival. Each contestant will receive two complimentary Sunday festival tickets.

At the competition, each contestant will have seven minutes on stage to tell a humorous, family-friendly story. A panel of three expert judges will award cash prizes to the top three liars.

Applications must be submitted

by Saturday, June 1. Submissions must include a link to a video representative of the contestant’s work, but it need not be the story they compete with.
