The contribution, made through the Educational Improvement Tax Credit Program, will be used to support Big Brothers Big Sisters’ School Mentoring Program. The program matches at-risk elementary school students, called Littles, oneto-one with volunteers, Bigs, from local high schools and colleges.

Mentors and mentees meet weekly at participating schools to work on schoolwork, play games, and build strong mentoring relationships. According to the Big Brothers Big Sisters, last year, 97 percent of Littles improved their academic performance and 99 percent went on to the next grade level. Rupe Installed As Zembo Shrine Potentate Imperial Sir Mark Hartz, Past Potentate of Boumi Shrine in Baltimore and the current Imperial Outer Guard of Shriners International, was the installing officer for the 2019 Divan members of Zembo Shrine in Harrisburg on Jan. 6. The program was held in the auditorium of Zembo Shrine and was attended by more than 170 Shriners, friends and family members.

Joseph W. Rupe Jr. of Derry Township was installed as the 98th Illustrious Potentate of Zembo Shrine. His wife, Susan, has chosen the Walk for Love to benefit Shriners Hospitals for Children - Philadelphia as her First Lady’s Project. The event will take place on Saturday, June 22, at Italian Lake across Division Street from the Shrine Center. Zembo members transport patients and their families to medical appointments at the Philadelphia hospital, sometimes making as many as three trips per week. Treatment is administered regardless of a family’s ability to pay.

Concert To Feature Music Of David Bowie

School Receives Donation York Catholic High School recently received two donations in support of its “Grow Today, Impact Tomorrow ” Capital Campaign. The Knights of Columbus 10474 Father Gerrity Council of Holy Infant Parish in Manchester gave $10,000, and the Knights of Columbus 6353 of St. Joseph Parish in York donated $25,000. The campaign is designed to provide resources for needed renovations and improvements to the high school with a focus on academic, student life, and extracurricular experiences.

Among the projects are renovated classrooms with facility-wide air-conditioning; upgrades and modernization to science labs and science lecture rooms; facility-wide safety enhancements, including an elevator; the creation of a new Student and Media Center, which will also house a College and Career Readiness Center, student center, renovated chapel, and upgraded lobby; and the installation of a turf athletic field that will be used by 12 athletic teams.

The York Symphony Orchestra will present a concert titled “David Bowie” on Saturday, Feb. 16, at 7:30 p.m. at the Appell Center for the Performing Arts, 50 N. George St., York. Tipton is an American conductor who has performed with numerous major orchestras. In 2011, Tipton was chosen to accompany the pop artist Sting on an extensive European tour covering 15 countries. Through this experience, he worked with

19 different European orchestras to prepare the musicians for concerts. In addition to this role, Tipton performed with Sting in concert in the Canary Islands, Granada, and Cap Roig, Spain. Tipton is also commited to arts education.

DreamWrights To Present Roald Dahl Tale DreamWrights Center for Community Arts, 100 Carlisle Ave., York, will stage “James and the Giant Peach,” based on the book by Roald Dahl. Eight performances of the double-cast children’s tale will take place between Friday, Feb. 15, and Sunday, Feb. 24. The show is recommended for people age 7 and up, and it is guest directed by Andrea Unger.

“James and the Giant Peach” is the second DreamWrights show

for 2019. This season’s theme is “Celebrating Life.”

Theater To Stage “Little Shop Of Horrors” The Belmont Theatre, 27 S. Belmont St., York, will present the musical comedy “Little Shop of Horrors” on the mainstage.

Shows will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Fridays, Feb. 15 and 22; Saturdays, Feb. 16 and 23; and Thursday, Feb. 21, as well as at 3 p.m. on Sundays, Feb. 17 and 24.

A Broadway and Hollywood sci-fi musical, “Little Shop of Horrors” is the work of Howard Ashman and Alan Menken, who are known for Disney’s “The Little Mermaid,” “Beauty and the Beast,” and “Aladdin.” In addition to its title song, “Little Shop of Horrors” features musical numbers such as “Feed Me” and “Suddenly Seymour.”

Menken and Ashman’s musical was based on the low-budget 1960 film “The Little Shop of Horrors.” Another movie, based on the musical and starring Rick Moranis as Seymour, was released in 1986.

The Belmont Theatre’s production will feature innovative staging, including a revolving

platform, multiple levels, and four different sizes of puppets that will be maneuvered to become the character of the man-eating plant growing to full size.

The production is directed

by The Belmont Theatre’s artistic director, Rene Staub.

Michael McGuiness is the vocal director and conductor of the live orchestra. The choreography is by Sarah Flynn. The cast features Matthew Walsh as Seymour Krelborn; Lindy Keefe as Audrey; Robert Eisenhour as Mr. Mushnik; Wesley Hemmann as the dentist, Orin Scrivello; Ashley Dzurzynski, Nicole Dzurzynski, and Julia Howey as the doo-wopping trio of Urchins; and Ben Eisenhour as the voice of the man-eating plant, Audrey II. Tips Posted For Managing Stress Stress is an issue that seems to affect everyone, especially in the workplace. Workers who take on too much work or those tasked with performing jobs beyond their abilities might be particularly affected. However, they can employ various strategies to manage their stress.

Embrace planning: A 2011 survey from psychologist Robert Epstein asked more than 3,000 participants in 30 countries which stress management technique was most effective at helping them overcome their stress. Epstein discovered that participants felt planning was the most effective way to manage their stress. Planning is

essentially a proactive approach to managing stress and fighting it before it even starts. Smartphone apps make it easier than ever to schedule one’s time. Utilizing such apps or opting for the more traditional route by using a day planner can be a highly effective way to manage stress.

Practice cognitive reframing: Cognitive reframing is another effective stress management technique that involves changing the way a person looks at something so his or her experience of it changes. Psychologists note that cognitive reframing is effective because the body’s stress response is triggered by

perceived stress and not actual events. By reframing the way people perceive a potentially stressful event, they can change their body’s response to it. This technique is most effective when people are mindful of their thoughts, particularly those that might be negative or stressinducing.

Take breaks: A heavy workload may compel people to sit down at their desk and keep working until quitting time.

However, that approach takes both a physical and an emotional toll. Sitting for long periods of time without getting up not only increases a person’s risk for various diseases, but it also can con-

tribute to something known as decision fatigue. Decision fatigue occurs when someone must make frequent decisions throughout the day. Without a break, such people’s abilities to reason become compromised, and they may end up making poor decisions or feeling less confident in their decisions, which may increase their stress levels. Frequent breaks, even if they are just brief walks to get a glass of water, can help avoid both the physical and emotional effects of stress.

Stress affects people across the globe. Learning to manage it can make people happier in their personal and professional lives.

College Posts Shakespeare-Inspired Play York College’s Division of Theatre will present “Shakespeare in Hollywood,” a comedy written by York native and playwright Ken Ludwig, at 7:30 p.m. daily from Thursday to Saturday, Feb. 14 to 16. The performances will take place in the Waldner Performing Arts Center on the college’s campus, 441 Country Club Road, York.

“Shakespeare in Hollywood” is directed by assistant professor of theater Suzanne Delle.

The play was inspired by the 1934 movie version of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” Ludwig has said that the play is among his five favorite plays by his favorite playwright, Shakespeare. After the show premiered at Arena Stage in Washington, D.C., it won the Helen Hayes Award for Best New Play of the Year. Ludwig has also received two Tony

YCLC Plans Tutor Training

The York County Literacy Council (YCLC) is seeking volunteers to tutor English as a Second Language (ESL) and native-born adult students.

YCLC provides free and confidential literacy services to adults in York County.

Tutors may help their students to study for their high school equivalency test or to reach a literacy goal such as being able to read to their children, securing or improving employment, and working toward entry into an institution for higher learning.

Volunteer tutors do not need a background in education to help someone to accomplish their literacy goals. The next training will be held at the York County Literacy Council, 800 E. King St., York, in the United Way building, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays, March 16 and 23. Participants must attend both of the train-

ing sessions. The parking lot entrance is located on Sherman Street.

After completing the training, volunteers will meet with their student once per week fo r o n e a n d a h a l f t o t w o hours in a public location arranged by YCLC. YCLC coordinators will help tutors with selection of materials and lesson planning throughout the tutoring experience.

Society To Offer Dance Classes The Red Rose Scottish Country Dance Society will offer a series of Scottish country dancing beginner classes. The classes will take place from 7 to 8 p.m. on Tuesdays, Feb. 19 through March 12.

All classes will be held at the Manheim Train Station, 210 S. Charlotte St., Manheim.

Lessons will introduce students to the basics of Scottish dance: footwork, patterns, music, and customs. Beginners will be able to stay after class to observe

the more experienced dancers enjoy the form of social dancing from Scotland.

DMVA Offers Assistance To Veterans The Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA) encourages veterans to review their benefits with a professional to ensure they are receiving the benefits they have earned through their service and sacrifice. All veterans should occasionally check with a veterans service officer to see if changes in a veteran’s circumstances or changes to benefit policies may have modified the programs a veteran may be eligible to receive.

Safeguarding military paperwork, especially the DD-214,

which is used to verify military service, is an important first step. The easiest way to manage military documents is to make sure they are filed in a safe place immediately when an individual leaves the military. Veterans often find that filing their documents for free at their county courthouse of record is an easy way to secure them until needed, which can often be decades into the future. Another key step is for veterans to apply for federal health

Area ABC Chapter Posts Board News The Keystone Chapter of Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) recently announced that Douglas M. Dvorchak, A.R.M., assistant vice president at Murray Securus, Lancaster, has been named 2019 chair of the board.

Dvorchak has been with Murray Securus for 24 years, serving in his current position for the last 15 years. He earned a bachelor’s degree in public relations from Penn State University. Dvorchak has served on the ABC National Safety Committee (2002 to 2003), the ABC Keystone Safety Committee, and the ABC Keystone Construction Rodeo Committee. Elsewhere, Dvorchak has served on the St. Leo School board (2010 to 2014) and the North Museum board of directors (2008 to 2018).

Currently, he resides in Lancaster with his family.
