Scouts Perform Holiday Songs Cub Scout Pack 28 of Red Lion performed Christmas carols at Country Meadows Nursing Home in York on Dec. 3. The Scouts, dressed in Class A uniforms, showed their Christmas spirit while treating residents to various holiday favorites. Songs included “Jingle Bells� and “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town.� The Scouts were led and accompanied by pack leader Brian Wise on the guitar.

The Scouts also assisted with Breakfast With Santa on Dec. 7 at the Red Lion Recreation Commission.

Cub Scout Pack 28 meets on Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m. at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Red Lion. The group is open to boys ages 5 to 10.

Designer Purse Bingo Fundraiser Set Red Lion Area Band Parents Club will host a designer purse bingo fundraiser on Sunday, Jan. 12, at 2 p.m. in the Student Commons at Red Lion Area Senior High School, 200 Horace Mann Ave., Red Lion. The cost of admission will include 20 bingo games.

Specialty games, baked goods and other food items, and more will also be available.

The community is invited to attend. All attendees must have a ticket. Attendees under age 18 may participate only when accompanied by a supervising adult.

Tickets are available through any Red Lion band member or by contacting rlbandbingo@gmail.com for an order form no later than Sunday, Jan. 5. Tickets will be discounted when purchased in advance and full price at the door, if available. Special group seating options are also available.

YMCA LIVESTRONG Program Community Partnership Offers Support To Cancer Survivors The YMCA of York and York County is offering the LIVESTRONG at the YMCA program, an evidence-based program that is intended to help cancer survivors and patients regain their physical and mental strength.

The free 12-week program supports cancer survivors in regaining their physical, emotional and spiritual strength.

The health and wellness exercise program is conducted in a small group environment that includes individualized attention for each participant. Adult survivors are eligible to join the program during all stages of recovery. The program also serves and embraces the families and caregivers who have been affected by the disease through a free family membership throughout the course of the program.

Children were invited to wear their pajamas for a reading of “The Polar Express.” The children also made a craft, colored pictures for Santa, and ate breakfast. Each child had the opportunity to sit on Santa’s lap and receive a present.

Silver Spurs Cowboy Church will be held on Sunday, Jan. 5, at the Lewis Family Farm (Mason-Dixon Game Outfitters), 2200 Channel Road, Pylesville, Md. The praise and worship service will begin at 12:30 p.m., led by Brad Rine-

holt, an ordained Cowboys for Christ chaplain, and will include hymn singing and a Bible message.

Following the service, there will be a potluck dinner as the church celebrates the arrival of the new year.

Community REACH, in partnership with the York County Literacy Council, will offer free High School Equivalency classes at the new Community REACH classroom in Red Lion. Classes will start in late January or early February 2020.

A Pennsylvania CareerLink station will be available at Community REACH starting on Wednesday, Jan. 8. The computer station

Applications are now open for the 2020 Cultural Alliance Artist Professional Development Grant. It will benefit artists who reside in York County. The funds will be used for professional development activities that will strengthen the recipients’ skills as artists, help them reach new audiences with their work, and ultimately advance their career. Funded in partnership with the Charlotte R. Langione Fund and the Walter B. Loucks-Michael Alan Bose Arts Fund of the York County Com-

munity Foundation, the grant will be awarded quarterly, beginning in January.

In addition to the grant, the Cultural Alliance will launch an Innovative Artist Award in August, as well as new streams of funding for arts and culture organizations in the county to receive operational support.

The First Baptist Church Encore Series will present the Christmas musical “Everlasting Light” by the One Voice Community Choir of York. The concert will be on Sunday, Jan. 5, at 3 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of York, 3375 Druck Valley Road.

YCPASR Will Offer Trips The York County Chapter of the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees (YCPASR) has an active travel group within the organization.

Offering monthly trip opportunities which include day, multiday, and international trips, the organization invites the public to join on two upcoming trips.

The first trip, scheduled for May, will include a visit to the National Museum of Health and Medicine, which was established during the Civil War. After visiting the museum, the group will tour the National Air and Space Museum’s Steven F. UdvarHazy Center anchored at Dulles International Airport.

At this museum, visitors will be able to view a Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird, the Enola Gay, and the Space Shuttle Discovery.

The second trip will take place on Saturday, Aug. 29.

Attendees will have the opportunity to experience the Library of Congress National Book Festival. The 20th annual event will feature more than 140 authors, illustrators, and poets. The festival will include thematic programs, panel discussions, and presentations by world-renowned authors.

Cultural Alliance Will Offer Grant

York County Libraries took home the 2019 Best Practices Award for family/multigenerational programming during the annual Pennsylvania Library Association Conference in Erie recently. The libraries were honored for their program collaboration Beyond Our Walls: Read Me a Story, which connects incarcerated parents with their children through books.

Now in its third year, the program has served more than 330 inmates at York County Prison.

During each four-week session, York County Libraries youth services professionals introduce quality children’s literature to a small group of inmates, helping them learn how to effectively use books with their children to develop literacy skills.

Inmates select a book, practice reading it, and record themselves reading it for their children. The recording, book, and library resources are mailed to the inmates’ children, who can hear their parents reading as often as they wish. Maintaining family connections while incarcerated has been shown to help ease an inmate’s transition back into society and reduce recidivism.

Beyond Our Walls is among the roster of programs offered by the prison to aid with reintegration, but it is unique because it is designed to benefit children too.

Beyond Our Walls also provides offenders with important education regarding child development, literacy, and library/community resources.

Crispus Attucks Center for Employment and Training and Child Care Consultants Inc. participate in the final week of each session. They respectively answer questions and provide guidance for finding employment and quality child care following release.

Library Director Speaks Lutz Named “Celebration Of Music” Finalist To Rotary Members Payton Lutz, a freshman at Central York High School, was a finalist in the Celebration of Music Competition, hosted by Ethan Bortnick, who is driven by his desire to give young musicians the same opportunities PBS afforded him. Celebration of Music is a talent search group that showcases the best young

Martin Library, named 2019 Library of the Year in Pennsylvania, has been located at the corner of Market and Queen streets since 1935. This city landmark has three levels of collection, program, and gathering spaces where visitors can find a large collection of books, research expertise, more than 70 computers, and learning experiences for people of all ages. Programs in the Children’s Library meet state standards for early childhood education and support students’ individual growth. The Teen Forum provides a space for teenagers to have fun, explore opportunities, discuss issues, and construct their futures.

Audition tapes are sent in by contestants and, if selected, contestants continue to advance in the competition. Those officially selected as finalists are notified and have their profiles posted on the Celebration of Music website.

The competition led to a performance at The Gordon Center for Performing Arts in Baltimore on Oct. 24. One winner was selected by total viewer votes received online and in person, and the other was chosen by the producers. The two winners performed live and received an invitation to the Los Angeles Celebration of Music National Competition for another performance.

Payton, from York, is the daughter of Mark and Michelle Lutz. Now 14 years old, she started performing in shows at the Belmont Theatre (then York Little Theatre) at the age of 5 and a half. She has been in dozens of

shows, and she hopes one day to perform on Broadway in New York City (NYC). In addition to performing at the Belmont Theatre, she has been part of shows at the Eichelberger Theatre in Hanover. She earned a role in Central York’s production of “Into the Woods.”

Payton also performs with The Acts of Kindness Theatre Company, which for the past 14 years has given back to the community through its Hearts Through Art. She has performed with Peter Bottros and Shine Music Foundation, a nonprofit organization.

Payton takes vocal lessons in NYC at Badiene Magaziner Vocal Studio and locally with Lisa Pantano. She takes dance classes in NYC and locally, as well as acting classes in NYC and with Donald McKenn Jr. in Media. She spends some of her summer attending weekly vocal and acting intensives at Broadway workshops in NYC.

In seventh and eighth grades, Payton was presented the Leadership Award by choir director Ms. Perko and the school chorus group. This year she is a member of her high school chorus and also sings with the Chamber Singers. She has been accepted into the Central York High School Chapter of the Tri-M Music Honor Society.

For the past five years, Payton was invited to sing the national anthem at York Revolution baseball games. Payton also performs and sings at various venues as a costumed character performer and volunteers at the Belmont Theatre. She has also been a student dance teacher at Adrenaline Dance of York.

The Dinwiddie, Va., location collected items for Operation Shoebox.

Setting goals can have a greater impact than people may know.

Studies examining the importance of setting goals are few and far between, and some have even been revealed as fallacies after being accepted as authentic for years. But a 1979 study that asked newly minted Harvard MBA graduates about setting goals found that 13% had set goals. When interviewers followed up with survey participants a decade later, they found that the 13% who had set goals were earning, on average, twice as much as the 84% of participants who had set no specific goals at all.

While there is no universal formula for success, successful people often cite the importance of setting goals and how doing so was integral to their success. The

following are some strategies that may help people achieve their goals in the years ahead.

1 . People should make it a group effort. A 2013 study from a University of Connecticut researcher found that there is a high level of correlation between users’ exercise activities and their participation in these digital health communities. Such communities served as motivating factors for people aiming to live healthier lives. Relying on others for support, insight, and motivation can be a great way to achieve goals, no matter what those goals are.

2. Individuals should set goals big and small. No goal is too small, and no big goal should be considered beyond reach. In fact, achieving small goals can provide motivation and inspiration along the way to realizing larger goals.

Individuals should devise a one-

month plan, a six-month plan, and a 12-month plan for the year ahead. The one-year plan can serve as the big goal, while the one- and six-month plans can serve as small motivators and great ways to track progress en route to achieving a larger goal.

3. People should write down why they are setting goals. People set goals for various reasons, and writing down the reasons they are pursuing their goals can serve as inspiration when challenges arise. For example, if someone aspires to change careers to spend more time with their family, writing that down can provide motivation to keep looking for opportunities when a job search stalls or feels fruitless.

A new year is a great time to set goals. A handful of strategies can help people set their goals and keep them on track toward achieving them.

Ecological Programs Planned Horn Farm Center for Agriculture Education, 4945 Horn Road, York, will offer “The Living Landscape,” a monthly ecological adventure walk through the center’s woodlands and meadows. The program will be offered from 9 to 11 a.m. on the first Saturday of each month, except in July, when the program will be held on the second Saturday, July 11. The other dates are Jan. 4, Feb. 1, March 7, April 4, May 2, June 6, Aug. 1, Sept. 5, Oct. 3, Nov. 7, and Dec. 5.

Classes will be led by Horn Farm Center woodland steward Wilson Alvarez, and participants will learn about broad patterns of the landscape as well as dive into the details of the micro-ecosystems under rocks, inside dead trees, beneath the soil, and beyond.

Every month’s class will be dif-

ferent in response to what the land presents and what questions attendees have. Topics may include animal and insect tracking, identification of wild plants, tree and bark identification, macroinvertebrates, soil analysis, reading the landscape, nature observation, bird language, topography, understanding water flow, and primitive skills.

Attendees should be prepared for all weather and to get dirty, wet, and sometimes hot and sticky. This class is family- and child-friendly, but children must be accompanied by an adult.
