Church Sets Christmas Shopping Opportunity

Fishing Creek Salem United Methodist Church, 402 Valley Road, Etters, will hold the fifth annual Salem Community Christmas Closet on Saturday, Dec. 8, from 9 to 11:30 a.m. The community is invited to enjoy breakfast and to shop for gifts, which will all be offered at no cost. Doors will open for registration at 8:45 a.m.

The event will offer children’s clothing, books for children and teenagers, toys, household items, linens, and gift items. A new room called Everything New will be open. In addition, one room will be designated for children age 3 and up who would like to shop for items to give to family members and make crafts while their parents shop. Families will register at the door and then may shop throughout the church. Some limitedquantity areas will use a ticket system.

No vendors will be permitted. The event is intended as an opportunity for the church to serve the community. It is not intended for vendors to obtain items to sell.

Greater York Dance will present “The Hip Nut” on Saturday, Dec. 15, at 7:30 p.m. at the Appell Center for the Performing Arts, 50 N. George St., York.

A cast of more than 75 people will perform in the show.

“The Hip Nut,” a multicultural adaptation of “The Nutcracker,” takes place in two acts and tells the story of a Christmas Eve in modern-day scenes. Clara, the featured girl, is later approached by a group of gangsters and the Nutcracker See The Hip Nut pg 4

Mount Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, 2164 Mount Zion Road, York, has announced the return of the Hershey Handbell Choir to the church’s recital schedule. The ensemble will perform on Friday, Dec. 7, at 7:30 p.m. in the sanctuary.

The Hershey Handbell Choir is an auditioned group that includes 17 members from throughout southcentral Pennsylvania.

Founded in 2004, the group is dedicated to sharing the art of handbell ringing through education and performances. It has been recognized for its ability to play advanced literature and, in so doing, presenting a variety of music written for handbells, handchimes and other instruments.

Directed by Dr. Shawn Gingrich, the ensemble performs using seven octaves of handbells.

Annual Event Supports MDA The Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) benefited from ERA Preferred Properties Inc.’s 16th annual 5K run/walk to on Oct. 6 in Hanover. The event raised more than $10,000 to benefit MDA. The MDA is a voluntary, nonprofit health agency dedicated to curing

Penn-Cumberland Garden Club (PCGC) will award a $1,000 scholarship to a high school senior planning to attend a four-year college/university in 2019-20 with a major in horticulture, floriculture, landscape architecture, conservation, forestry, urban or regional planning, environmental science, botany, or plant- or ecology-related studies. PCGC will award a second $1,000 scholarship to a current college/university student enrolled in a bachelor or graduate degree in 2019-20, with a major in these same fields.

YCAS Public Starwatch Set The York County Astronomical Society (YCAS) will host a public Starwatch at its observatory at John C. Rudy County Park, 400 Mundis Race Road, York, on Saturday, Dec. 8, at 7 p.m. The evening will begin with a screened astronomical presentation on current events and the December night sky. Guests will then be guided on a tour of the sky using one of the club’s telescopes.

Attendees will be shown celestial objects to include the planet Mars, the Andromeda galaxy, star clusters, nebulae, and more. As an added bonus, guests may witness the Geminid and Orionid meteor showers

and perhaps get a glimpse at the asteroid Juno.

If it is clear, all activities will occur as scheduled. If it is completely cloudy or raining, the indoor activity of a screened astronomical presentation will occur as scheduled. When arriving at the park, drivers should use the main park entrance, not the administrative office entrance.

Hot beverages and light refreshments will be available.

Bird Watch Program Slated York County Park’s FeederWatchers will catalog the birds that visit the feeders at Nixon County Park from November until early April. Individuals who would enjoy joining this citizen science effort may contact Andrew Wolfgang, park naturalist, at 717-428-1961 to learn what it takes to become one of the 20,000 FeederWatchers participating in this program across the nation.

are sent to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, which has been using this project to log the movements of winter birds in Canada and the United States for more than 30 years. Beginners are welcome to participate, and the feeders are ADA accessible.

Agency Presents Awards Bell Socialization Services Inc. presented several awards at its 2018 annual meeting, held on Oct. 2 at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in York.

Bell presented the Margo Atwood Community Services Award to Jessica Mockabee, assistant director of the York County Department of Human Services. The award is given to an individual or group that provides their time and resources to enhance Bell’s programs.

Mockabee has been an integral part of the relationship between Bell and the York County Department of Human Services. She has advocated for and helped secure needed funding for the Bell Family Shelter and Bridge Housing programs, especially for unplanned expenses and major repairs. She has been supportive of the agency’s Next Door program and made adjustments to the funding formula to make administration of the program significantly easier.

Mockabee also used her own time to write a grant application that, if founded, will provide a new position at Next Door to focus on helping people facing community re-entry from prison, as well as for victims of domestic violence.

Steven A. Warren, county administrator of the York/Adams Mental Health/Intellectual & Developmental Disabilities (MH/IDD) Program, was recognized as a Dedicated Partner.

Warren, who will retire at the end of this year after 36 years of service, was presented with a

Diane and John Schlaline, owners of Schlaline Print Shop in East Berlin, received the Business of the Year Award. The company was recognized as a business that contributes time and resources to assist Bell in fulfilling its mission within the community.

The Schlaline Print Shop is a family business that has created space for individuals in Bell’s Adult Training Facility (ATF) in New Oxford to volunteer. According to

Bell, the individuals, all of whom live with varying degrees of intellectual disabilities, have built great relationships with the Schlalines because they are welcomed with genuine respect.

Bell Socialization Services Inc. is a human services agency based in York. It provides housing and living skills supports to individuals living with mental illness, people with intellectual disabilities, and families that are homeless. Since 1966, Bell programs have been seeking to provide an environment of support and empowerment to help people throughout the greater York and Hanover area improve their quality of living.

“100 Under $100” exhibit in the Kerlin Gallery and York artist Ophelia Chambliss’ new installation, “Some Assembly Required,” in The Project Space. Both exhibits will remain on display until Saturday, Dec. 22.

“100 Under $100” consists of small original works by 100 local and regional artists, including both professional and recreational artists. The works feature an array of subject matter, media, and stylistic preferences. The works will be available for purchase on a

first-come, first-served basis. Buyers may take home the works upon purchase.

The First Friday activities will be free and family-friendly.

The Mad Art Dash, a fundraising event for Creative York, will be held on Thursday, Dec. 13, from 6 to 8 p.m. It will feature 25 artists creating works in two 30-minute flash rounds. The resulting works will then be available for purchase, with a portion of the proceeds going to support Creative York programming.

SMBA Plans Bluegrass Concert Seven Mountains Bluegrass Association (SMBA) will present Joe and Stacy Isaacs on Saturday, Dec. 8, in the social hall at the Goodwill Fire Company, 2318 S. Queen St., York. The doors will open at 5:30 p.m. The Kody Norris Show will also perform.

Concert Will Kick Off YSO “Heroes!” Season The York Symphony Orchestra (YSO) will present a concert titled “The Eroica” on Saturday, Oct. 6, at 7:30 p.m. at the Appell Center for the Performing Arts, 50 N. George St., York. This concert is the first Classical Series performance of the 2018-19 season, “Heroes!”

The Classical Series will open with Beethoven’s “Egmont” Overture, portraying the life and heroism of the 16th-century Dutch nobleman Lamoral, Count of Egmont. Egmont was a loyal subject of Philip II of Spain, yet he opposed the Spanish repression of the Netherlands. Egmont was captured and executed as a traitor for conspiring against the regime.

The concert will also feature a special performance by York Symphony Orchestra principal trumpet Nathan Clark, as he performs the Trumpet Concerto by Johann Nepomuk Hummel. Clark is a York native and resides in York County with his family. He is also a member of the

United States Air Force Ceremonial Brass, primary substitute trumpeter for the Kennedy Center’s National Symphony Orchestra, and principal trumpet of the Maryland Symphony Orchestra and Apollo Orchestra. He regularly performs with the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra, the Fairfax Symphony Orchestra, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, and the National Philharmonic. An active performer and advocate of brass chamber music, Clark is a founding member of the Barclay Brass ensemble, which performs throughout the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area.

The concert will conclude with Symphony No. 3, “Eroica,” by Beethoven. “Eroica,” meaning “heroic symphony,” was originally dedicated to Napoleon, but Beethoven withdrew that dedication once Napoleon declared himself emperor.

The movie “Four Christmases” will be shown on Friday, Dec. 14, at 12:15 p.m.

September House is partnering with Feed the Vets for two special events. A cookie walk fundraiser will be held on Saturday, Dec. 8, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Feed the Vets will serve a free sitdown turkey dinner on Tuesday, Dec. 25, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The meal will feature all the trimmings, including dessert.

The senior center delivers meals to homebound seniors on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays and is in need of volunteers to help with deliveries. Routes are within a few miles of the center, and a commitment of one to two hours is required.

York County residents age 60 or over are invited to take a short tour of the center, meet the staff

Daily workouts are offered from 10 to 10:30 a.m. Tang Soo Do, a Korean martial arts program, is taught by a certified teacher on Mondays and Wednesdays from 1 to 3 p.m.

The senior center also offers cards and games throughout the week. Pinochle is played every Monday from 1 to 4 p.m., chess is played on Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., 500 bid is played on Wednesdays from 1 to 4 p.m., and the bridge club meets from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Fridays. The center is set up to play shuffleboard on Mondays and Tuesdays from 9 to 11 a.m., and additional players are being sought. All are welcome to play or watch. Board games, cards, and jigsaw puzzles are also available for everyone to enjoy.

In addition, wood burning classes and workshops are held on the first and third Fridays.

York JCC Plans Special Event The York Jewish Community Center (JCC), 2000 Hollywood Drive, York, invites the community to participate in Lighting the Darkness in Our Community: Remembering Together, the Victims of Tree of Life Synagogue and Thousand Oaks. The program will be held on Monday, Dec. 10, from 5:30 to 7 p.m.

The program will fall on the

last day of Hanukkah and Human Rights Day, the anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

various genres and currently studies hip-hop and jazz three days a week at Greater York Dance.

Children’s Home Of York Receives Donation The Society for Marketing Professional Services (SMPS) Central Pennsylvania Chapter presented a $1,000 check to the Children’s Home of York (CHoY) on Nov. 1.

CHoY is a nonprofit organization that aims to meet the needs of children and families and enrich the local community.

SMPS’ donation came from

proceeds raised through the chapter’s fifth annual A/E/C Industry Golfing “Fore” Business Four-Person Scramble event on Sept. 18 at the Regents’ Glen Country Club in York. More than 80 golfers participated. Registration included green fees and carts, lunch and dinner, complimentary beverages, networking,

School To Launch Capital Campaign York Catholic High School is set to launch a “Grow Today, Impact Tomorrow” capital campaign designed to provide resources for needed renovations and improvements to the high school with a focus on academic, student life, and extracurricular experiences.

The goal is to raise a total of $8 million over three to five years, which will allow for two separate phases of renovation. Among the projects targeted in Phase I will be renovated classrooms with facility-wide air conditioning, upgrades and modernization to science labs and science lecture rooms, and facility-wide safety enhancements, including an elevator. Phase I will also include the creation of a new Student and Media Center, which will also house a College and Career Readiness Center, a student center, a renovated chapel, and an upgraded lobby. The school will also install a turf athletic field that will be used by 12 athletic teams.

The original timeframe for the campaign has shifted, however, as unexpected foundational and lead gifts have already generated $5 million prior to the launch of the campaign. With a projected

cost of between $4 million and $4.5 million needed to complete Phase I, plans are already underway to upgrade classrooms, including air conditioning, and to install the turf field by the 2019-20 school year.

As a result of the funds already in place, the “Grow Today, Impact Tomorrow” campaign will focus efforts on raising the remaining money so that the goals of Phase II of the campaign can be realized. One goal is the A rendering shows the planned turf athletic field at York conversion and modernization of Catholic High School that will be used by 12 athletic teams. the Brady Science Wing that serves seventh- and eighth-grade students, including air-conditioned classrooms, science labs, a central office, additional restrooms, and safety upgrades.

Other goals for Phase II include home and guest grandstands at the new turf field, along with a concession stand, restrooms, and locker rooms at the athletic field.

If the campaign is successful, it will give York Catholic the capacity to increase enrollment from its current 618 students by 20 students per year over a five-year period and lead to the hiring of additional full-time The creation of new science labs is one of the goals of York staff as well.

Concert To Feature Western Swing, Country Music American Idol star Kristyn Harris and fiddler Hailey Sandoz will perform Western swing and country music at a Susquehanna Folk Music Society (SFMS) concert on Saturday, Dec. 8, at 7:30 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of York, 925 S. George St., York. A brief yodeling workshop will take place at 6:30 p.m.

Harris, a singer, guitarist and champion yodeler, has won

numerous accolades, including the Western Music Association (WMA) Entertainer of the Year Award. She was also named WMA Female Performer of the Year in 2014 and 2015, the Ameripolitan Music Awards’ Western Swing Female Artist of the Year in 2017, and the Pro Cowboy Country Artist’s Association’s 2017 Entertainer of the Year and Female Vocalist of the Year.

Sandoz’s fiddle playing incorporates Western swing, bluegrass, jazz, and Celtic music. She has performed internationally at the Equiblues Festival in France and travels full-time with Grammy Award-winner Bobby Flores and his Yellow Rose Band.

Wheelchair Basketball Tournament Held Naval Supply Systems Command (NAVSUP) Business Systems Center (BSC), recently held its 29th annual Wheelchair Basketball Tournament at Mechanicsburg Middle School. The event brought together Navy military service members and civilians with the local community in support of National Disability Employment Awareness Month.

The tournament featured teams from Mechanicsburg Middle School and Good Hope Middle School, military and civilian personnel serving on board Naval Support Activity Mechanicsburg, and former members of the Chairiot Express.

This year’s tournament theme, “America’s Workforce: Empowering All,” celebrated the contributions of workers with disabilities and educated about the value of a workforce inclusive of their skills and talents.

Sailors assigned to Naval Supply Systems Command (NAVSUP) Business Systems Center (BSC) were among the participants in NAVSUP BSC’s 29th annual Wheelchair Basketball Tournament.

RSVP - York County is seeking volunteer drivers age 55 and over for Jewish Family Services in York County.

Drivers will help support those who need to be driven to appointments and various places in York County.

Tales Of The Skies Posted The York County Astronomical Society (YCAS) will celebrate 12 years of planetarium programs by offering programs for the entire family on Saturday, Dec. 8.

Programs will be shown at the York Learning Center Planetarium, 301 E. Sixth Ave., York.

“One World, One Sky: Big Bird’s Adventure” will be shown at 2 p.m. “StarWatch” will be shown at 2:40 and 7:40 p.m.

“Season of Light” will begin at 3:20 and 7 p.m. “Distant Worlds: Alien Life?” will be shown at 8:20 p.m.
