Veterans Honored By Sportsmen’s Groups

850 Pleasant Grove Road, York Haven, will host a free safety talk by the chief of the fire department on Saturday, Sept. 8, at 11 a.m. Youths will be presented with bicycle helmets, and lunch will be provided to all attendees. Conewago Township York County will celebrate its 200th anniversary on Saturday, Sept. 15. The bicentennial celebration will include a parade at 10 a.m., an open house at the township office from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and a fireworks display at dusk to conclude the event. The township office is located at 490 Copenhaffer Road, York. All residents of Conewago Township and the surrounding area are invited to join in the festivities. The department is expanding its Service Officer Outreach Program once again to now include Mount Wolf VFW Post 2493 on the third Monday of each month from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. VFW State Service Officer Christine Smith will accept appointments at Post 2493 for any veterans or survivors. Brenner Attends Convention Sandra Brenner of Mount Wolf, a member of Susquehanna Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Auxiliary 2493, recently attended the 105th VFW Auxiliary National Convention at Bartle Hall Convention Center in Kansas City, Mo. The convention marked the beginning of Brenner’s second year serving as representative of Pennsylvania on the National Council of Administration, which governs the Auxiliary between national conventions. A highlight of the convention was the second annual Circle of Excellence Ceremony, where 21 department (state) presidents were honored for their leadership during the 2017-18 year. Other highlights included the opportunity for members to view all 49 entries of the Young American Creative Patriotic Art entries and the “Buddy” Poppy displays, in addition to attending several joint events with the VFW, such as the Joint Opening Session and the Patriotic Celebration. During the convention, national president Dee Guillory commended the 2,000 attendees for all their hard work in honoring veterans and supporting deployed military personnel and their families. Guillory also thanked members for volunteering nearly 1 million hours in the nation’s hospitals and donating $300,000 to VFW Veterans and Military

York County Libraries will start fall hours of operation on Saturday, Sept. 8. The change impacts Saturday hours at libraries that reduced hours or were closed on Saturdays during the summer months. Collinsville Community Library in Brogue will be open the first and third Saturdays of the month from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Red Land Community Library in Etters and Kreutz Creek Library in Hellam will be open from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays. Village Library in Jacobus will be open from 10 a.m. to noon. Kaltreider-Benfer Library in Red Lion and Mason-Dixon Public Library in Stewartstown will lengthen their hours to 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Guthrie Memorial Library in Hanover, Paul Smith Library of Southern York County in Shrewsbury, and Dillsburg Area Public Library will increase their hours to 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays. Pennsylvania Department of Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW)

The York County Federation of Sportsmen’s Clubs recently honored veterans through sponsorship of the annual York County Veterans Shoot that was held on July 14. The Starview Sportsmen’s Association hosted approximately 75 attendees at this year’s event, where veterans enjoyed a luncheon and competed in a clay shoot. Dinner featuring steak followed the shoot, and a variety of door prizes were awarded. The York County Federation of Sportsmen’s Clubs noted that numerous donors contributed to the success of the event, which aimed to honor veterans.

Fall Library Hours Posted

Susquehanna Lions Club past president Dennis Moore (left) recently presented a check for $500 to Paul Curci of The Nicholas House. The funding will be used for clothing, personal care items, transportation to doctor’s appointments, and more for those in recovery from addiction.
