Williams Grove Historical Steam Engine Association will host a Model Train Flea Market on Saturday, July 21, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Sunday, July 22, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Williams Grove Steam Engine Show Grounds, Williams Grove Road, Williams Grove. The event will feature steam train rides, a model train exhibit, vendors selling collector items, two museums, and food. Fundraiser To Show Bobcat Pride

Hiking Club Posts Schedule

The Northeastern basketball cheerleaders will hold a fundraiser in the Northeastern School District this summer. The cheerleaders will be available to paint pawprints and sports balls on driveways in the community.

Local residents are encouraged to show their Bobcat pride to the community and support their favorite sports team.

Help for Oncology Problems and Emotional Support (H.O.P.E.) recently awarded scholarships to Jenna Bittinger, Caleb Keller, and Rylee Smith. H.O.P.E. has awarded a total of 81 scholarships and more than $60,000 to high school seniors whose immediate families include a person with cancer, including some of the scholarship recipients themselves.

Bittinger graduated in the top 5 percent of her class at Northern High School.

While in high school, she completed six college courses and was a member of the National Honor Society (NHS) and the World Language Honor Society. As a member of the school volleyball team, she was selected for the Mid Penn All-Star Help for Oncology Problems and Emotional Support (H.O.P.E.) become a bilingual teacher and work in disadvantaged Hispanic/Latino communities has been her motivation since she was young. During her senior year at Northern, Bittinger not only took Advanced Placement (AP) classes, but she also volunteered three times per week as a teaching assistant for seventh-grade middle school students. She has also tutored her high school peers in Spanish.

In the fall, Bittinger plans to attend Houghton College, where her older sister just finished her sophomore year. She was one of 25 students out of 1,000 applicants who were accepted into the Honors Program to study abroad in London for a semester. Bittinger also plans to attend graduate school to earn a master’s degree.

Bittinger’s grandmother has breast cancer.

Keller graduated from South Western High School. He plans to attend York College, where he has been accepted into the Presidential Research Fellowship Program. He plans to major in biology and conduct research about consciousness. He plans to attend medical school to study anesthesiology.

Keller’s academic achievements have placed him in the top 5 percent of his graduating class. He was a member of NHS and maintained a G.P.A. above 4.0, which has kept him on the distinguished honor roll all four years. Keller is actively involved with his school’s Link Crew. This year, Keller took three AP-level courses, as well as classes at HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College.

Three other garden clubs will be represented. The private garden of an American Rose Society Show judge will be included, and the Bonsai Club will present a display at the Rosemary House, 120 S. Market St., Mechanicsburg. Dahlia Club members and Garden Talk radio host Bob Carey, a certified arborist, will be present at the Ames Community Garden to answer questions.

Two of the gardens on the tour have won the Philadelphia Horticulture Society’s Greening Award. At various sites, artists will paint and musicians will play.

Tickets include four coupons and entry into one giveaway drawing at each site. Separate prices have been set for tickets purchased in advance, tickets purchased on the day of the tour, and tickets for children under the age of 12. Tickets may be purchased in advance at Aschcombe Farm and Greenhouse, Highland Gardens, Stauffers of Kissel Hill in Mechanicsburg and the Rosemary House.

On the day of the tour, tickets may be purchased at the Rosemary House. PCGC will use all proceeds for gardening projects and scholarships in the central Pennsylvania region.

38th Annual Jazz Festival Slated Central Pennsylvania Friends of Jazz (CPFJ) will host the 38th annual Jazz Festival from Thursday, July 5, through Sunday, July 8, with performances at the Pride of the Susquehanna Riverboat, Appalachian Brewing Company’s Abbey Bar, Hershey Library, Mount Gretna Hide-AWay, Gretna Playhouse, and Indian Echo Caverns. The Friends of Jazz will welcome NEA Jazz Master saxophonist/composer Benny Golson, who has had a sixdecade career.

On July 5, the Dave Stahl quintet will perform on the Pride of the Susquehanna from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tickets may only be purchased at www.harrisburgriverboat.com.

On Friday, July 6, a Jazz Party will take place from 7 p.m. to midnight at Appalachian Brewing Company’s Abbey Bar, 50 N. Cameron St., Harrisburg.

Kathy Seilhamer received the Community Build Award. Seilhamer, manager of external affairs at Met-Ed FirstEnergy, served two full terms on United Way’s board of directors, including time on the Executive Committee and Human Resources Committee. She has been a member of Women United since its inception in 2013. She has consistently secured sponsorship from her place of employment to support United Way’s Day of Action, and she has managed a consistently successful employee campaign at the business for several years.

Glatfelter Company, currently serves as the chairelect to the United Way of York County board of directors and recently completed service as the Search Committee chair for United Way’s incoming executive director. She is a longtime volunteer on United Way’s board of directors and Executive Committee, and she also served on the Allocations Panel in 2015 and Strategic Planning Committee in 2016.

Keith Noll was honored with the Distinguished Service Award.

Noll is senior vice president of WellSpan Health and president of WellSpan York Hospital. A member of the Alexis de Tocqueville Society and immediate past chair for United Way’s board of directors, Noll has served on the board since 2009, including as board chair in 201516. At the Hanover Valley Presbyterian Church, Keller has been an organizer of Kid’s Fest, a yearly summer Bible camp for hundreds of children in the area. He has served as the leader and trainer of the helpers who conduct the children from activity to activity.

A year ago, Keller’s mother was involved in a car accident, and a followup scan revealed a mass in one of her lungs. Though a nonsmoker, she was diagnosed with lung cancer.

Smith graduated third in her class of 106 students at Hanover High School, with a G.P.A. over 4.0 and seven AP classes completed. She plans to attend Penn State University Park in the fall to major in biomedical engineering, with the goal of attending medical school. She hopes to become a neurosurgeon and to study the relationship between genetics and cancer.

Smith played volleyball for four years and was her varsity team’s captain during her senior year. She was a member of her school’s Link Crew, as well as the NHS, the National Art Honor Society, and the Tri-M Music Honor Society.

Smith played in the school orchestra during her freshman year and performed in the four annual spring musical productions. She was a member of the Show Choir for two years, and she performed with the Madrigals, Victorian Singers, Treble Makers, Women’s Chorus, and

Chamber Choir all four years. In addition, she worked with the school’s Student Council to help with four Mini-THONs. Community service activities have taken her as far as Detroit, where she

worked with her youth group to help clean up neighborhoods in need, as well as closer to home, where she has worked with children in various capacities.

When Smith was in seventh grade, her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. It was a scary time for Smith and her two younger siblings. Fortunately,

the cancer was detected in the early stages, and following surgery and treatment, Smith’s mother has been in remission.

H.O.P.E. is a volunteer-driven organization founded in 1994. It is dedicated to providing assistance and support services to cancer patients and their families.

Leadership York Bestows Award During its program graduation event on May 16, Leadership York presented The York Water Company with the 2018 Outstanding Business of the Year award, recognizing its commitment to leadership development and community involvement. The honoree each year is selected after a task force reviews a list of local companies and organizations that encourage community engagement and philanthropy. A history-centered, 3-mile hike on Sunday, July 15, will take place at the historic York Iron Mine Company site at P. Joseph Raab Park, 2600 Hoff Road, Seven Valleys. Participants will hike around the old mining pits, look at the mine openings, climb approximately 700 feet in elevation, and walk about one-eighth mile down a stream. They should wear long pants, waterproof boots and bug spray. The group will meet at the west end parking lot on Woodberry Road and

Church Graduates Seminary Students The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the York and Lancaster areas graduated 19 students during a ceremony on May 27 at 6 p.m. at the Lancaster Stake Center. The students attended early morning seminary classes every day before school from ninth through 12th grades.

The high schoolers studied the four standard works of the church: the Bible, the Book of Mormon, the Doctrine and Covenants, and the Pearl of Great Price.

The graduates, listed by ward, are as follows. Lancaster Ward: Ethan Knarr. Lititz Ward: Kimberly Beck, Faith Dryden, Carter Hasson, MacGregor Henrichsen, and Eric Vassilaros. Shrewsbury Ward: Paul Abramson, Sadie Ann Bowman, Amanda Buckheit, and Benjamin Ward. West York Ward: Morganne Browning, Aidan Fryar, Sequoia Graver, Alexa Lucas, Ashley Markle, and Bryce Ohl. York Ward: Katelyn

Herrin, David Johnson Jr., and Tanner Marchant.

At the graduation ceremony, Ohl gave the opening prayer, and Beck, Marchant, and Markle delivered messages. The final speaker was Eva Poff, a seminary graduate who now attends the Institute for Young Single Adults.

Additionally, two seminary students performed a special musical number. Abramson sang “One Voice” and Ward played the cello while Abramson’s mother, Teri Sue Abramson, accompanied them on the piano.

The conclusion to the ceremony was the recognition of students and the awarding of certificates of completion. Adam M. McBride, regional coordinator of the seminary and Institute programs, presented the graduates to the Stake president, Conrad Knudson. The diplomas and certificates were presented to the graduates. Knudson concluded

AHEDD Appoints New President AHEDD has announced the appointment of Brandy F. Burnham to president of the private, nonprofit organization, which was founded in 1977 to meet the employment needs of people with disabilities and the business community.

Burnham, who began her tenure on June 4, succeeds Rocco Cambria, who held the position since 1983 and was instrumental in founding the organization 41 years ago. Burnham was selected after a national search.

A graduate of Pennsylvania State University and Harrisburg Area Community College, Burnham began her career as a support teacher and behavior specialist at Forbush School, where she taught

in the areas of academics, vocational preparation, social skills, and behavior management. Her career path, which includes years of learning and case management support for students, youths, and adults with disabilities, led her to several positions with the state’s Department of Labor and Industry. For more than five years, she held the position of director of the Bureau of Workforce Development Administration.

Cambria’s official retirement date is slated for Friday, July 6. In addition to his 41-year career at AHEDD, Cambria has served on state policy planning committees Brandy F. Burnham and councils through which he has expanded services to people He has provided organizational with disabilities in Pennsylvania. consulting and technical assistance to organizations in five U.S. states and conducted statewide training workshops and seminars addressing topics of job readiness, development, placement, and training of individuals with disabilities. Prior to AHEDD, Cambria worked at the Pennsylvania ARC, directing the statewide On-The-Job Training program
