Harrisburg Christian Performing Arts Center (HCPAC), 1000 S. Eisenhower Blvd., Middletown, invites the public to celebrate the birth of Christ as local band III For The Road presents a Christmas benefit concert on Saturday, Dec. 14. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m., and the concert will begin at 7 p.m. The event will raise funds for HCPAC. There will be readings of “’Twas the Night Before Christmas” and the Nativity story, singing of Christmas carols, and light refreshments and desserts. COCOA WITH SANTA

Harrisburg River Rescue and Emergency Services, 725 S. 22nd St., Harrisburg, will host its inaugural Cocoa With Santa event on Saturday, Dec. 21, from 10 a.m. to noon. Children will be assisted in selecting a toy, and cocoa and baked goods will be provided. There will also be a holiday movie, crafts and coloring activities, and holiday-themed games.

MARA Schedules Special Events Middletown Area Recreation Alliance (MARA), in conjunction with Middletown Business Association, has launched an event to encourage residents to get out into the town. The Scavenger Hunt for Santa will take place through Friday, Dec. 13. The hunt for Santa will officially end at MARA’s breakfast with Santa on Saturday, Dec. 14, from 8 to 11 a.m.

In order to participate in the scavenger hunt, a Santa passport must be obtained from one of the participating stores, and then the participant must follow the clues to the other locations.

Representatives of local organizations were present to receive grants and advertising sponsorships at the Hershey Rotary Club’s weekly meeting on Nov. 25 at the Hershey Lodge and Convention Center.

The Hershey Rotary Club continued its annual community philanthropy by awarding just over $50,000 in grants and advertising sponsorships on Nov. 25 at its weekly meeting at the Hershey Lodge and Convention Center. The recipients of the grants and sponsorships are local organizations that benefit the citizens of Derry Township and Dauphin County.

Included in the list of organizations that received grants are the following: Boy Scouts of America, Cocoa Packs Inc., Derry Township Community Cats, Hershey Area Playhouse, Hershey Community Archives, Hershey Community Chorus, HersheyDerry Township Historical Society, Hershey Food Bank, Hershey Public Library, Hershey Story Essay Contest, Hershey Symphony, Hershey Theatre Apollo Awards, Hershey Volunteer Fire Company, Hope Lodge/American Cancer Society, Literacy Council of Lancaster-Lebanon, Love INC, Middletown Public Library,

Mohler Center, Ronald McDonald House and William S. Bowman Trust.

The Hershey Rotary also provides funding to several other organizations throughout the year, including Hershey High School Boys’ Volleyball Booster Club, Hershey Middle School musical production, Hershey Little League, Hershey girls’ softball, Hershey Flag Football, Hershey Football Family, Hershey Youth Hockey, Kiss Hershey Back and Raider Club.

Additionally, the Hershey Rotary supports several philanthropic initiatives in Africa and South America. Notable among these are projects focusing on healthy families in Ecuador, healthy babies in Ghana, and conflict resolution in Nigeria, as well as two Global Health Scholarships for medical students who will be working in Nigeria.

These philanthropic efforts by the Hershey Rotary Club align with the Rotary motto of “Service Above Self.”

Snow Removal Tips Posted For Safe Mail Delivery With the approach of winter in Pennsylvania come freezing temperatures, snow, and ice.

The U.S. Postal Service is asking customers to help letter carriers deliver mail safely by clearing snow and ice from sidewalks, stairs, and mailboxes.

The Postal Service will make every reasonable, safe attempt to deliver mail during and after a storm. However, wintry precipitation can make mail delivery dangerous and slow. Maintaining a clear path to the mailbox - including steps, porches, walkways, and street approach will help keep letter carriers safe and help them continue to offer consistent delivery service.

All customers should keep the approach to and exit from their mailbox or mail slot free of ice and snow. Customers receiving door delivery should make sure their sidewalks, steps, and porches are clear.

Customers receiving curbside or rural delivery should remove

snow piles, such as those left by snow plows, to keep access to their mailboxes clear for letter carriers; mailboxes should be cleared sufficiently on both sides. Curbside or rural boxes should also be kept clear of vehicles, trashcans, and other objects.

Delivery service may be delayed or curtailed whenever streets or walkways present hazardous conditions for letter carriers or when snow is plowed against mailboxes. Delivery will be curtailed only after careful consideration and as a last resort. Delivery of curtailed mail will be attempted the next delivery day.

Blue collection boxes also need to be kept clear for customers to deposit their mail and for the Postal Service to collect the mail for delivery.

Residents and businesses with collection boxes near their property are asked to keep them clear of snow and ice.

Museum To Conclude Lecture Series The National Civil War Museum, 1 Lincoln Circle at Reservoir Park, Harrisburg, will present the last lecture in the 2019 Lessons in History Speaker Series on Saturday, Dec. 14, from 1 to 2 p.m. Harrisburg historian Calobe Jackson Jr. will present “Sunday School Connections to the Underground Railroad in Harrisburg.”

People may know of the Underground Railroad (UGRR) activities of Joseph Bustill, Randolph Kelker, Dr. Rutherford, and others, but it may not be as well known that they were Sunday school teachers as well.

Jackson will briefly talk about their relationship to the UGRR and fugitive slave cases. He will also discuss George H. Imes’ “History of the Sunday School,”

which tells about Bustill, Kelker, Rutherford, and others as Sunday school leaders.

Jackson specializes in Harrisburg African American history.

He is a member of the Society of American Baseball Researchers, past member of Historical Society of Dauphin County board of trustees, and past member of the trustee board of Harrisburg University of Technology and Science.

The 2019 Lessons in History program is free to the public.

Mansion Set For “Deck The Halls” Festivities The Historical Society of Dauphin County will hold its 24th annual Deck the Halls event at the John HarrisSimon Cameron Mansion, 219 S. Front St., Harrisburg, on Thursday, Dec. 12, from 6 to 9 p.m. The mansion will be arrayed in holiday decor.

The holiday party is the historical society’s signature fundraising event. It will include the presentation of the 2019 John Harris Award to Marcia B. Gobrecht, the celebration of the historical society’s 150th anniversary, live music by pianist Jack Bair,

heavy hors d’oeuvres and desserts, beverages, and a tasting of locally sourced, small-batch handcrafted beverages by Midstate Distillery.

There will also be a silent auction of items donated by local businesses and individuals.

The 2019 Glenn & Amy’s 0.5K Race on Oct. 5 raised $2,978 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) of Central Pennsylvania. The event, hosted by Glenn Hamilton and Amy Warner of The River 97.3 radio station, was held at Appalachian Harley-Davidson in Mechanicsburg.

The fundraiser was held to support MDA’s mission to help free children and adults from the harm of muscular dystrophy, ALS and related diseases that severely weaken muscle strength and mobility. An additional amount of $2,978 was donated to the Harrisburg River Rescue, which also received a check from the money raised at the event.

Teams of families, friends and neighbors, along with local businesses and public supporters, joined forces for the 0.5K race at Appalachian Harley-Davidson

to celebrate the strength of local MDA families, while raising awareness and funds to help accelerate research efforts to find treatments and cures.

More than 500 people turned out for this year’s walk, according to Joseph Alfano, MDA of Central Pennsylvania executive director.

Fundraising events take place throughout the U.S. each year and the contributions help MDA fund research across diseases and provide individuals with programs and support services, including Central Pennsylvania’s stateof-the-art multidisciplinary care at the MDA Care Center at Penn State Hershey Medical Center in Hershey. The organization supports the MDA summer camp, which is offered for youths at no cost to their families, at Variety Club Camp.

The chorale is a nationally acclaimed adult chamber ensemble of 38 auditioned singers, founded in 1981 by artistic director and conductor Linda L. Tedford.

This year’s concerts will include classics interwoven with new settings of familiar texts, some featuring guest cellist Ai-Lin Hsieh. The chorale will perform Elaine Hagenberg’s “O Come, Emmanuel,” Ola Gjeilo’s “Serenity,” John Rutter’s “Carol of the Magi,” Donald McCullough’s arrangement of “What Child Is This?” and the spirituals “Rise Up, Shepherd, and Follow,” arranged by Stacey Gibbs, and “Mary Had a Baby,” arranged by Uzee Brown Jr. The audience will be surrounded by candlelight and song for the chorale’s traditional finale, Malcolm Sargent’s setting of “Silent Night.” A prelude by Hsieh and organist Daniel Dorty will be presented 15 minutes prior to each performance.

The chorale’s season sponsor is Fulton Private Bank, and the sponsor of the “Candlelight Christmas” concert series is The Anne M. and Philip H. Glatfelter III Family Foundation.

Merry Christmas, everyone! It is only two weeks away! I am so excited! I never lost my awe for Christmas; I still feel like a little kid when it comes to it. I think a lot of that awe is due to my growing up in the Riverside Chapel.

Christmas was extra special at Riverside Chapel when I was a kid. I remember every Christmas service; we kids would get a big fat orange and a box of chocolates. We also used to make “clear toys” lollipops back in the kitchen; do any of you remember them? They were so good! I also remember gathering in a large circle, everyone holding hands, and then singing “Silent Night.”

And, of course, we always were told the true Christmas story, and it still always makes me feel full of love, peace, and hope.

The Christmas Spider Legend A long time ago in Germany, a mother was busily cleaning house in preparation for the Christ child. Not a speck of dust was left! Even the spiders that usually stayed in the living room corner fled upstairs to the attic to escape the broom.

From the attic they could hear all the excitement from the living room as preparations were being made for when the Christ child was to come on Christmas Eve and bless the house.

The spiders could hardly wait for everyone to go to bed so they could sneak back down to see the decorated tree. The spiders slowly crept downstairs for a view.

Oh, what a beautiful tree! They could hardly believe it!

In their excitement they scurried up the trunk and along each branch. They were filled with happiness as they climbed all through the tree to see the glittering beauty.

But, alas, by the time they were through climbing all over the tree, it was completely shrouded in their dusty gray spider web.

When the Christ child came to bless the house, He smiled as he saw how happy the spiders were, but he knew how heartbroken the

PSECU Presents Donation To Food Bank Throughout September, the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank encouraged the community to contribute to its third annual Hunger Action Month Virtual Food Drive.

To bolster collection efforts, Hunger Action Month presenting sponsor PSECU pledged to match the month’s total contributions up to $15,000.

The response from local individuals, businesses and organizations was commendable, coming in at $14,202. Though the match goal was not fully met, PSECU contributed the entire $15,000 potential donation, bringing the total raised to $29,202.

PSECU president and CEO George Rudolph explained that each dollar donated helps the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank provide six meals for those facing food insecurity in the community, meaning that the money donated by individuals and business, coupled with PSECU’s donation, will provide 175,212

meals to neighbors in need.

A virtual food drive is basically the same food drive concept people have always known - collecting resources for those in need - but with a twist thanks to smart technology.

A virtual food drive is an online initiative through which individuals and groups can visit an interactive grocery store that simulates how monetary donations efficiently purchase food for hungry families, veterans and seniors. Benefits of the virtual model include time savings for busy donors, no expiration dates on food stock and a supply of funding that can be deployed as needed throughout the year. The Lower Paxton Christkindlmarkt, a traditional German outdoor Christmas celebration, will be held on Saturday, Dec. 14, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the streets of Linglestown. Admission is free and open to the public.

Mul -Billion Dollar Buying Power

The PPL Foundation recently awarded more than $575,000 in funding to support 13 nonprofit organizations working to improve the lives and well-being of individuals throughout central and eastern Pennsylvania.

The grants announced are helping organizations fulfill their missions across the company’s 29-county service territory in central and eastern Pennsylvania. The 2019 PPL Foundation Major Grant recipients include several area organizations.

Joshua Group in Harrisburg received a grant of $25,000 to help expand the number of children being served by an afterschool program.

Lancaster Equity Inc. received a grant of $40,000 for the development of a new park and playground on Beaver Street, a direct request of neighbors in the community who are working collaboratively to improve the community.

Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education Foundation in Harrisburg received a grant of $50,000 for the development of a fund that will be used to provide faculty and staff resources to develop, test and

Tabor Community Services in Lancaster received a grant of $50,000 to expand the capacity of its eviction prevention program to help stabilize neighborhoods by providing at-risk tenants with financial counseling, mediation with landlords and short-term financial assistance.

Earlier this year, the PPL Foundation awarded $450,000 in sustaining grants to more than 70 community organizations. The PPL Foundation also contributed more than $2 million to support local United Way organizations. The recently awarded grants bring the foundation’s 2019 community contributions to more than $3 million.

The PPL Foundation awards grants in spring and fall. The next grant cycle, for sustaining grants that assist organizations with general operating expenses, begins in January. Interested organizations can apply for grants from $1,000 to $25,000.

Univest Financial is hosting its eighth annual Caring for Community Giveaway, which will award a $5,000 donation to a local nonprofit organization. Univest is asking the public to determine which local nonprofit deserves financial support.

Individuals may nominate a local nonprofit organization by submitting the name of the nonprofit in the comment section of the post promoting the Caring for Community Giveaway on Univest’s Facebook page or Instagram account or by tweeting the name of a nonprofit to @UnivestCorp using #Caring ForCommunity. Each comment or tweet will count as one entry. An individual may submit one entry per day, per voting method. The winning nonprofit will be randomly selected from all entries.

Entries for the giveaway will be accepted from through Tuesday, Dec. 31. To be eligible, the nonprofit organization must be registered as a 501(c)(3) and must operate within Univest’s service area,
