Annual Home Tour, Holiday Tea Planned The annual Middletown Holiday Home Tour will take place on Saturday, Dec. 14, along with a Charles Dickens Holiday Tea. The home tour will be available from 1 to 8 p.m. and will feature many Middletown-area homes decorated for the holiday season. This year’s tour is dedicated to the memory of JoAnn Shipkowski.

Rotary Club Recognizes Students Of The Month The Hershey Rotary Club presented its Students of the Month awards for November and one for October at its weekly luncheon meeting on Nov. 18.

Lower Dauphin High School’s MiniTHON Committee will host a Jingle Jam 5K Run and Fun Walk on Saturday, Dec. 14, at Cassel Brookside Farms, 80 Shetland Drive, Hummelstown. The 5K run/walk will begin at 11 a.m. A half-mile fun run for children will begin at noon. A silent auction will run from 9 to 11 a.m. on race day.

The event will be a cross-country style race, and participants may face some rough terrain as the race will be held on the grounds of a farm. Participants are encouraged to wear an ugly sweater or Christmas costume, and the person with the best costume will receive a prize.

The Train Guys are back at work setting up an elaborate, interactive miniature train display for the public in the lower level of the Elizabethtown Public Library, 10 S. Market St., Elizabethtown. The group of approximately 20 volunteers began construction in mid-October for the final product, which made its public debut on Dec. 3.

“We think for a temporary Christmas display that this is the biggest on the East Coast,” said Train Guy Craig Coble. O-gauge trains run through detailed towns decorated for the holidays, and G-scale and standardgauge trains and accessories are also featured. The interactive elements of the display, which has upwards of 50 push buttons, are one of the things that Coble said visitors tend to most appreciate. Several new push button accessories have been added for 2019, as well as new track loops, a third level of track, a police station, a flying saucer abducting a cow, and enhancements to the perennially popular circus setup.

“Last year was our best year ever. We had well over 4,600 visitors, and we’re hoping for even more this year,” Coble stated.

Costumed greeters - such as a railroad police officer and an engineer - track attendance and interact with guests at the event.

Historical Elizabethtown buildings are part of the setup, such as a miniature version of the Klein Chocolate Company stadium, which was built in Elizabethtown in 1919. “Most of the volunteers have a lot of history knowledge, whether it’s about real railroads, toy trains, or Elizabethtown itself,” noted Coble.

“And all of those pieces of history link to so many others.”

Volunteer John Gantz worked for Amtrak for 33 and a half years and has been part of The Train Guys for seven years. “It’s all about the kids,” said Gantz.

“It’s good for me to be with a good group of guys here and just seeing the kids enjoy it all every year.”

Aidan Mollohan, 17, said that this is his sixth year helping The Train Guys. He plans to pursue a career as a mechanical engineer and has been able to glean wisdom from engineers among the crew. “It’s also helped me to learn a lot about carpentry and

wiring. A number of our members are electricians,” Aidan commented.

Retired industrial arts teacher Ken Stehman has enjoyed working with The Train Guys since he was recruited by Coble seven years ago. “I just enjoy tinkering with things and the problem solving that’s involved,” said Stehman. “We always end up with new challenges, because it’s never the same layout.”

The 2019 display will be open from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays in December; from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays, Dec. 7, 14, and 21; and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 28. The exhibit will also be open from 6 to 8 p.m. for Second Friday on Dec. 13 and on Mondays, Dec. 23 and 30. Private showings are available by calling 717-367-7467.

Admission is by suggested donation, with proceeds benefiting the library. Visitors may enter to win a John Deere steam freight set and a framed railroad picture. Train aficionados are also encouraged to check out the display at the nearby MV&E Model Railroad Club on the grounds of Masonic Village, 1 Masonic Drive, Elizabethtown. Masonic Village will provide a free shuttle bus service that will transport visitors to and from the parking lot beside the Masonic Village outdoor pool and the Elizabethtown Public Library. The shuttle will run on a continuous loop from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Dec. 7, 14, and 21. The MV&E display will also be open from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 8.

Miniature Horse Annual Christmas Holiday Adventure Set Concert Planned All children ages 8 to 11 years old and their parent/guardians are invited to participate in the Miniature Horse Holiday Adventure at CATRA (Capital Area Therapeutic Riding Association) in Grantville. Wreath Ceremony Slated Gibbs Will Perform At Stoverdale UMC

Church To Host Free Supper, Movie Colonial Park Community Baptist Church, 700 S. Sylvie has established the St. Hilaire French Scholarship Fund through The Foundation for Enhancing Communities to benefit college-bound high school graduates in need of assistance. She has also served on the board of directors for the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra and currently serves as a director on the Harrisburg Symphony Society Board. Together, Sylvie and Gary were recognized by the Ryan International School for their commitment to excellence in education.

Gary D. and Sylvie F. St. Hilaire of Mechanicsburg were honored in November with the 2019 Humanitarian Award from United Way of the Capital Region’s Tocqueville Society.

They were recognized for their outstanding commitment to improving lives through volunteerism during a special reception, sponsored by M&T Bank, Wilmington Trust and Capital BlueCross.

Gary and Sylvie moved to the community nearly 15 years ago when Gary was named CFO of Capital BlueCross. Today, he serves as the company’s president and CEO. College Receives Special Designation The Pennsylvania National Guard Associations (PNGAS) announced that Central Penn College was one of 30 universities and colleges to receive the inaugural PNGAS GuardFriendly School designation.

Accepting the honor on behalf of the college was Ben Lipschutz, interim dean, School of Business and Professional Studies, a retired U.S. Army veteran and an adviser to the college’s Armed Forces Association Club.

Currently, Central Penn College has 55 students who are either veterans or who are serving with the U.S. military or the National Guard.

Early this year, Central Penn College was recognized as a Military Friendly School for the fifth consecutive year.

The PNGAS board approved the 30 self-nominated institutions to be named as 2019-20 PNGAS Guard-Friendly Schools for the 2019-20 academic year. Of the more than 480 schools eligible to receive Education Assistance Program funds, only these schools have earned the right to be designated a PNGAS Guard-Friendly School. In 2020, PNGAS will review several additional standards to help more members, veterans and their families get advanced degrees.

SSC To Debut “A Children’s Christmas Carol”

Susquehanna Stage Company will perform “A Children’s Christmas Carol” at the Marietta Center for the Arts on the weekends of Dec. 6 to 8 and Dec. 13 to 15. character who is a lot older than me and who has kids,” shared Julia, a Lampeter resident and student at Lancaster Country Day School.

“I think it’s really special that it’s a cast of all kids. We all get along really well, and we’re having a lot of fun with this show,” added Julia.

The cast includes children ages 5 to 18 from throughout Lancaster and York counties. Director Jim Johnson wanted to be sure that Susquehanna Stage Company (SSC) performed something unique for its first major children’s production in the Eater Theater at Marietta Center for the Arts, 133 W. Market St., Marietta.

Instead of performing a show that was pegged outright for youths, he opted for an adaptation of Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol.”

SSC board member Asher Johnson, who is also Jim’s son and regularly appears in SSC productions, wrote the original adaptation, “A Children’s Christmas Carol,” which is filled with Christmas carols and songs. “It’s pretty true to the Charles Dickens version and has the same characters, but we wanted something that was more tailored for younger kids,” commented Asher.

A beloved holiday favorite, the tale follows embittered Ebenezer Scrooge, played by Brayton Alkinburgh, as he clings to his miserly ways and declares the joys of Christmas to be “Bah! Humbug!”

Scrooge’s disheartened mentality is shaken up through the course of several events, including encounters with the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future - portrayed by Emma Witman, Anastasia Hess, and Teresa Moore, respectively.

Zac Snyder will play Bob Cratchit, Scrooge’s employee. “I get to be the happiness of the show and spread cheer with my family,” said Zac, who lives in Columbia and attends Lancaster Catholic High School. This will be his fifth performance with SSC. Mrs. Cratchit will be portrayed

by Julia Bono, who is making her SSC debut. “I love this show, and I was really interested in playing a

Chatter Happy holidays, everyone! Oooooooh, I am loving the season! All my childhood memories of Christmas just lift me so high ... the blue lights that outlined my grandma and grandpa’s house, the smell of Nan’s cookies baking, the way the snow glistened in the moonlight, the way we decorated the whole house, the special items we only got out this time of the year, all the presents under the tree. I remember the car rides we used to take to look at the Christmas lights on all the houses ... my grandma would say, “Look at that one, kids,” and we kids would always ooh and aah at every house we saw. That was so much fun.

I miss those days but I try my hardest to keep all those things alive still. I decorate my outside with blue lights, I bake cookies, I decorate every room of my house, I still put my adult kids’ presents under the tree, and my hubby and I take car rides to look at the Christmas lights all over!

First Corinthians 13, Christmas Version If I decorate my house perfectly with plaid bows, strands of twinkling lights, and shiny balls, but do not show love to my family, I’m just another decorator.

If I slave away in the kitchen, baking dozens of Christmas cookies, preparing gourmet meals, and arranging a beautifully adorned table at mealtime, but do not show love to my family, I’m just another cook.

If I work at the soup kitchen, carol in the nursing home, and give all that I have to charity, but do not show love to my family, it profits me nothing.

If I trim the spruce with shimmering angels and crocheted snowflakes, attend a myriad of holiday, parties and sing in the choir’s cantata, but do not focus on Christ, I have missed the point.

Love stops the cooking to hug the child.

Love sets aside the decorating to kiss the husband.

Love is kind, though harried and tired.

Love doesn’t envy another’s home that has coordinated Christmas china and table linens.

Love doesn’t yell at the kids to get out of the way, but is thankful they are there to be in the way.

Love doesn’t give only to those who are able to give in return but rejoices in giving to those who can’t.

Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

Love never fails.

But giving the gift of love will endure.

HACGC To Present Festival Of Trees The Harrisburg Area Civic Garden Center (HACGC) is presenting its 24th annual Festival of Trees, which is part of Christmas at Fort Hunter. The free event will be held in the Fort Hunter Tavern on weekends from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. The event began on Nov. 30 and Dec. 1 and will continue on Saturdays and Sundays, Dec. 7, 8, 14, 15, 21, and 22.

Recipe of the Week

or as desired Directions: 1. Whisk together flour, sugar, and salt in a large bowl; with a pastry cutter, chop in the butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

2. Stir the rum extract and almond extract into the water in a small bowl. Mix into the dry ingredients, a little bit at a time, until the mixture holds together in a ball when you squeeze it.

3. Place the dough onto a floured work surface, and sprinkle with flour; roll out into a sheet 1/4 inch thick. Cut into shapes with floured cookie cutters, and place 1 inch apart on ungreased baking sheets. Cover with a layer of plastic wrap and refrigerate for 30 minutes.

4. Preheat oven to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C).

5. Bake the cookies just until the edges are lightly browned, 15 to 18 minutes. Allow to cool on sheets for 2 minutes before removing to wire racks to finish cooling. Cool completely before decorating.

6. For frosting, whisk the confectioners’ sugar and milk in a bowl until smooth. If desired, divide frosting into small bowls, and tint each bowl a desired shade with food coloring. Frost fully cooled cookies, and sprinkle with edible glitter before the frosting sets.
