MAMS Essay Contest Winners Honored

This year’s essay theme was “What Makes America Great?” Each winner was awarded $50 in prize money.

Vocal Ensemble Will Present “Rejoice” Christmas Performances The Voices of the Valley, a central Pennsylvania vocal ensemble, will present “Rejoice: The Concerts of Christmas.” The concerts will take place on Sunday, Dec. 1, at 4 p.m. at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, 10 Delp Road, Lancaster; Friday, Dec. 6, at 7:30 p.m. at Grace United Methodist Church, 309 Herman Ave., Lemoyne; and Saturday, Dec. 7, at 7:30 p.m. at Palm Lutheran Church, 11 W. Cherry St., Palmyra. The concerts will feature chants, spirituals, carols, and lullabies from throughout the ages, including well-known songs of the season, new arrangements of classics, and some brand new melodies, as well as instrumental accompaniment. Under the direction of Gregg R. Mauroni, Voices of the Valley will celebrate its 42nd season. The group began in the late 1970s by Lebanon Valley College graduates seeking to continue singing with their director, Dr. Pierce Getz. After Getz passed away, Mauroni was hired to lead the ensemble. Currently, 45 voices are accompanied by Ruth Sweigart and directed by Mauroni. See “Rejoice” pg 2

Fifteen Lower Dauphin High School student-athletes signed letters of intent on Nov. 13 to continue their education and athletic careers.

Sheldon Jones spearheaded the creation of the Christmas album “Joy to the Burg: The Gift of Music to Help the Homeless” and a related concert on Sunday, Dec. 8. Proceeds will support efforts to combat homelessness.

Fourteen Harrisburg bands and musicians have contributed to a new Christmas album to benefit the homeless population during the holiday season. The album is titled “Joy to the Burg: The Gift of Music to Help the Homeless.” In connection with the project, the contributing musicians are organizing “Joy to the Burg: A Live Christmas Concert,” to be held on Sunday, Dec. 8, at 3 p.m. at Rose Lehrman Performing Arts Center at HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, 1 HACC Drive, Harrisburg. Slightly more than half the artists whose work is included on the album will perform at the concert. The master of ceremonies will be Glenn Hamilton of The River 97.3.
