VETERANS DAY
Middletown Area Middle School (MAMS), 215 Oberlin Road, will host its annual Veterans Day program on Friday, Nov. 9. The community is invited. The event will begin with a continental breakfast for all veterans from 8 to 9 a.m., and the program will take place from 9 to 10 a.m. It will feature a tribute to the veterans of the Vietnam War. The guest speaker will be Lou Braasch, also known as Dan Steele. The event is sponsored by American Legion Post 594, VFW Post 1620, Middletown Moose Lodge 410, Middletown Anglers and Hunters, and the MAMS National Junior Honor Society. Hershey Area Women’s Connection will host a “Designer Showcase” brunch buffet at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 14, at Hershey Italian Lodge, 128 Hillcrest Road, Hershey. The event will feature music by Lisa Shaver of Middletown and a presentation on “Designs for Life” by Sue Balsinger of South Park. There is a cost to attend, which is all-inclusive. MAHS Band Receives Custom Bass Guitar every home football game to support the Blue Wave Marching Band. Betts started building guitars after watching online instructional videos. Betts now builds custom guitars for touring artists around the country. Some clients give him exact specifications for their dream guitars while others ask Betts for suggestions and input. He flew to Colorado to hand-deliver a custom guitar to professional bassist Andy Irvine. See Custom Guitar pg 9

Middletown Area High School (MAHS) band director Sam Fisher was recently asked if he was interested in a custom-built bass guitar for the high school band. The source of the guitar was Darryl Betts, who builds bass guitars in his free time. When he is not working on his hobby, he maintains the grounds of Middletown Area School District properties as a district employee in the operations department. He also attends
CRAFT WORKSHOPS
6049 Blue Bird Ave., Harrisburg, will offer two children’s craft workshops on Saturday, Nov.17. From 10 to 11 a.m., participants will learn to make pressed flower bookmarks. From 11 a.m. to noon, they will learn how to make owls, turkeys and mice out of pine cones. Both workshops are free. The workshops are for children ages 8 to 12, who must be accompanied by an adult. Twenty high school students from Derry Township School District and Lower Dauphin School District are participating in the Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center & College of Medicine’s Healthcare Career Exploration Program (HCEP). HCEP allows high school students the opportunity to interact with health care professionals in a real-work environment. Hershey High School students Anton Aluquin, Desirae Chandran,
Victoria Corado, Olivia Eichman, Caroline Fackler, Advay Mongia, Timothy Lee, Lynnae Shultz, Abigail Sullivan, and Shawn You are among this year’s HCEP participants. From Lower Dauphin High School, Summer Blouch, Grace Day, Audrey Domovich, Kailey Eldridge, Sarah Gingrich, Tanner Kennedy, Ashleigh Kenney, Ryan Kutz, Cassandra McIntire, and Nicholas Messner are also participating.
Cub Scout Pack 113, which meets at Seven Sorrows of the Blessed Virgin Mary School in Middletown, recently held its annual pumpkin carving event. Participants, including Scouts, parents, and grandparents, also painted and made scarecrows.
