HALLOWEEN PARADE

The Kiwanis Club of Middletown will hold its 65th annual Halloween Parade on Monday, Oct. 15. The parade will start forming at 6:15 p.m. It will begin at 7 p.m. at the intersection of Race and Conewago streets. To obtain the parade route map, visit www.kiwanisclubofmiddletown.com.

Merchandise and novelties will be sold, and there will be food concessions. The rain date will be Tuesday, Oct. 16. TREK-OR-TREAT 5K

The Middletown Area High School (MAHS) Mini-THON Committee invites community members to participate in a Trek-or-Treat 5K Run for the Kids on Saturday, Oct. 20. Check-in will begin at 8 a.m. at MAHS, 1155 N. Union St., Middletown. The run/walk will begin at 9 a.m. Participants will collect candy along the course. MAHS Plans Homecoming Festivities

The Serbian Singing Society Josif Marinkovich of St. Nicholas Serbian Orthodox Church will host a concert, dinner, and dance in celebration of its 85th anniversary on Saturday, Oct. 27.

All events will be held in the church hall at St. Nicholas Church, 601 S. Harrisburg St., Oberlin.

Festivities will begin at 4 p.m. with Great Vespers, followed by the concert at 5 p.m. The concert will consist of performances by three choirs: guest choir Carica Milica Women’s Choir of Pittsburgh, Christ the Saviour Church Choir of Harrisburg, and the Marinkovich choir. The dinner and dancing will follow the concert. Music will be provided by Srpski Sinovi of Pittsburgh.

CPYB To Stage “Cinderella’s Ball” Music Ministry Team To Visit Church Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet (CPYB) will perform “Cinderella’s Ball” on Saturday, Oct. 20, at 1 and 5 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 21, at 2 p.m. at the Whitaker Center for Science and the Arts, 222 Market St., Harrisburg.

Sewin’ Sisters Sowing will present its 21st Sew Much for Charity and Free Fabric Event on Saturday, Nov. 3, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church, 210 Main St., Hummelstown. The networking event is for those who crochet, knit, or sew for charity, and sewing groups are welcome to join and sew to benefit the community. There is no cost to attend, and a light lunch will be provided for free. Individuals with special dietary needs should bring their own food.

Volunteers Sought For Tax Preparation

ARRIVING LATE?

Volunteers are needed to offer free tax preparation to help working families receive the federal and state tax credits they are eligible for. No previous experience is required, and training is provided.

In tax year 2017, 238 volunteers provided free income tax preparation for low- to moderate-income families as part of the Money in Your Pocket (MIYP) campaign, a community collaboration of organizations committed to the economic stability of local families. Nationally the

effort is known as the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program (VITA). Volunteers filed 4,721 tax returns, resulting in more than $4.4 million returned to local families. The average annual income for clients receiving tax preparation services was $21,227, and the average return was $1,218.

The Money in Your Pocket campaign received financial support from the PNC Foundation and the U.S. Department of Treasury, Internal Revenue Service.

Volunteers will offer tax

preparation services at designated sites in the Capital Region from Monday, Jan. 28, through Monday, April 15, 2019, during day and evening hours. All volunteers will be trained to prepare computerized, electronic returns.

Fall Meet To Feature Classic Vehicles Antique Automobile Club of America (AACA) National and the Hershey Region AACA will welcome antique and classic vehicle enthusiasts from all over the world to Hershey for the Eastern Division National Fall Meet from Wednesday, Oct. 10, through Saturday, Oct. 13. The event will feature a flea market with 9,000 vendor spaces and more than 1,000 vehicles for sale in the Car Corral.

Admission is free to the public for all events. Programs will be offered for both children and adults. All events will be held on the grounds surrounding Hersheypark and the Giant Center.

Limited spaces are available to AACA members to sell antique cars in the Car Corral.

The Car Corral will begin at 9 a.m. on Oct. 10.

On Oct. 13, 1,250 antique vehicles will enter the show field starting at 7 a.m. Judging will begin at 10 a.m. At noon in front of the Giant Center, Juniors at Hershey will celebrate “90 years of the Plymouth Automobile.” Participants will disassemble an engine and identify engine components.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Capital Region’s (BBBSCR) will hold its second annual adventure rooftop event, Over the Edge, on Friday, Oct. 19, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Market Square Plaza, 17 N. Second St., Harrisburg. Participants who raise $1,000 may rappel down the 18-story Market Square Plaza building, a 220-foot descent. The goal of the event is to raise $100,000 to grow and sustain BBBSCR’s local youth mentoring programs. The local affiliate of the national program serves five counties, including Dauphin County, where the event will take place.

At Over the Edge, participants

will be announced as they descend so family, friends and co-workers may take photos and videos. From 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., two lanes of Second Street will be closed for the viewing area. Additionally, audience members may enjoy live music provided by a disc jockey and an opportunity to chat with BBBSCR staff.

Sponsorship opportunities are available. These include the Toss Your Boss sponsorship, where employees or a company itself may nominate a top employee to rappel. Additionally, companies or individuals may sponsor a local police officer to rappel.

Museum Sets Halloween Evening Winters Heritage House Museum, 47 E. High St., Elizabethtown, will host a family-friendly Halloween evening on Friday, Oct. 12, from 5 to 8 p.m. The community is invited to drop in for fun and spooky tales, a pumpkin craft, cookies, and punch.

Lady Raiders Work a 1-1 Tie with CDE

The Middletown field hockey team enjoyed their first lead of the season during last Monday’s 1-1 deadlock with Central Dauphin East. Alexis Manfred used a Marie Schopf pass for a 1-0 lead at 13:26 of the opening half. The Lady Raiders held that one goal advantage until 9:39 of the second half when Amani Osibogun-Bell scored the equalizer. The teams played through the remainder of regulation and all of overtime with the game knotted at 1-1. Natasha Manfred finished with four saves for Middletown.

“We were really hopeful to get a goal in overtime to end with our first win,” said first year head coach Sierra Lenker. “The girls are proud of how

they played hard and never gave up despite all of the setbacks during the game. They truly played as a team, and the coaches are proud of them.”

The Lady Raiders were unable to keep pace with their other two opponents last week, falling to Bishop McDevitt and Spring Grove. Tuesday saw Middletown fall to McDevitt by a 7-0 count while the 4-0 loss to Spring Grove took place on Thursday.

Natasha Manfred tallied nine saves between the two games with six coming against the Lady Crusaders.

FOOTBALL The Middletown football team continued their march toward another Mid-Penn Capital Division title with a 32-21 win over Milton Hershey on October 4th. The victory keeps 4-0, 61 Middletown atop the standings

Milton Hershey started chipping into Middletown’s 13-0 lead just over a minute later when Dion Bryant scored on a 45-yard burst. The Spartans took their first lead with 1:35 remaining in the opening quarter with Josh Parra hauling in a 14-yard Naeem Cross strike.

Scott Ash, who finished with 70 yards through the air, put the Blue Raiders up heading into intermission with a one-yard plunge just before the break.

Milton Hershey retook the lead early in the fourth when Chiago Anyanwu broke off a 43-yard TD run that made it 21-20. Sykes put Middletown back in front near the midway point of the fourth with his second score of the game. The 10-yard TD capped his 102-yard game. Lopez provided some additional wiggle room with his second score, a two-yard plunge with 1:40 remaining in the contest.

The Blue Raiders rode their twoheaded rushing attack of Jose Lopez and Richie Sykes to the 11-point win over the Spartans. The pair combined for 259 of Middletown’s 262 rushing yards while scoring four of their five

touchdowns. Lopez tacked on an additional 33 yards on two receptions to account for over half of the Middletown offense thanks to his 157 rushing yards.

Lopez opening the scoring with a three-yard plunge that came just 1:43 after the opening whistle. Sykes also scored his first touchdown of the game in the first, busting free for a

singles and one doubles win but it was not enough as they fell by a 3-2 count. Mahnoor Azim collected the singles victory, topping Kiersten Greiner 7-5, 6-4 at number one. Stef Finsterbush and Taya Scott earned their doubles win by forfeit in the number two slot.

The Lady Raiders kicked off the postseason one day later by taking part in the Mid-Penn Championship Tournament. The AA field was not kind as all three singles as well as all three doubles matches ended with a Lady Raider loss.

James Buchanan’s Maggie Strawoet finished Azim’s time in the Flight One Bracket with a 6-1, 6-1 final while Trinity’s Maya Arora finished Buffington’s season with a 6-0, 6-1 first round final. Angelina Torres dropped her Flight Three singles match to another Lady Shamrock, with Maria Ferrarro handing Torres a 6-0, 6-1 loss.

In district qualifying doubles Azim and Buffington fell to Bishop McDevitt’s Makayla Burkholder and Maria Gontis, 6-0, 6-2. Finsterbush and Scott, fresh off their win a day earlier, saw their season come to a close with a 6-0, 6-0 loss to McDevitt’s Kathrina

COMMUNITYCOURIER - Middletown Edition games last week and thankfully for the Lady Raiders they were victorious in two of them. The first came on Monday with Middletown blanking Wyomissing by a 1-0 count. Sydney Garza netted the game winner in the 31st minute and Amanda Lee turned away all six Wyomissing shots to collect the win.

The second victory came on Thursday with Camryn Russ propelling Middletown to a 2-0 win over Milton Hershey. Russ netted both scores, one in each half, while Garza helped with one assist. Lee needed seven saves to keep Milton Hershey off the board.

In between the two wins came a 50 loss to Camp Hill. The Lady Lions used two goals from Julia Raich combined with a one goal two assist game from Sheridan Reid to get by Middletown. Lee finished the Camp Hill barrage that produced 24 shots with 10 saves.

BOYS’ SOCCER The boys’ soccer team checked off three more games last week and now sit at 5-10 on the year with two games remaining. Middletown hosted Camp Hill on Tuesday with the Lions earning a 1-0 win.

“Tremendous effort from our team in this one,” said head coach Brian Keyser.

VOLLEYBALL The volleyball team had two matches last week with the Lady Raiders ending up on the wrong side of both by 3-1 finals. The first came on October 2nd when Milton Hershey posted wins of 25-23, 25-21 and 2520 wrapped around Middletown’s 25-

21 game two victory.

Courtney Shaffer led the way in the loss with 10 digs, seven kills, seven assists and one block. Carly Dupes added 13 assists, two kills and one dig while both Cassie Ebersole and Natalie Krupilis matched Shaffer’s seven kills. Krupilis added three aces to her game while Hannah Wilsbach (12 digs) and Alexis Harmon (nine digs) chipped in on defense.

Recipe of the Week (We are running last week’s recipe again because we made a boo-boo and forgot to include the second step! Oops! Please forgive us and enjoy the complete recipe!)

Pan-seared Sausage with Apples Ingredients: 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil 4 sweet Italian sausages (about 1 pound), pricked with a fork 1/2 cup water 2 Granny Smith apples, peeled and thinly sliced 1/2 teaspoon fennel seeds 1 tablespoon cider vinegar Salt and freshly ground pepper Directions: 1. In a large skillet, heat the olive oil. Add the sausages and cook over moderate heat, turning occasionally, until browned but not cooked through, about 5 minutes.

2. Add the water to the skillet.

Cover and cook until the water is nearly evaporated and the sausages are firm, about 7 minutes. Add the apples and fennel

seeds and cook, stirring occasionally, until the apples are tender and browned, 8 minutes. Stir in the vinegar and season with salt and pepper. Serve in bowls atop cheesy rice.

Tip of the Week Make water marks disappear from wood surfaces by making a paste of salt and cooking oil.

Gently rub the past onto the ring with a sponge; let sit for a few minutes. Wipe with a soft cloth and polish as usual.

Joke of the Week His name was Bubba, he was from Mississippi ... and he needed a loan, so he walked into a bank in New York City and asked for the loan officer. He told the loan officer that he was going to Paris for an International Redneck Festival for two weeks and needed to borrow $5,000, and that he was not a depositor of the bank.

The bank officer told him that the bank would need some form of security for the loan, so Bubba handed over the keys to a new Ferrari. The car was parked on the street in front of the bank.

Bubba produced the title, and everything checked out. The loan officer agreed to hold the car as collateral for the loan and apologized for having to charge interest.

Later, the bank’s president

claimed game two, this one by a 2515 final but that left the Lady Rockets on top of the remaining three games, 25-22, 25-14 and 25-21. Shaffer collected six kills, four aces, four assists and one dig in the loss while Lani Moore chipped in with 10 digs, five aces and three kills. Katie Knaub added eight assists, four aces and two digs while Dupes finished with three kills and two assists.

GIRLS’ SOCCER The Middletown girls’ soccer team played in three separate shutout

and its officers all enjoyed a good laugh at the redneck from the South for using a $250,000 Ferrari as collateral for a $5,000 loan. An employee of the bank then drove the Ferrari into the bank’s private underground garage and parked it.

Two weeks later, Bubba returned, repaid the $5,000 and the interest of $23.07. The loan officer said, “Sir, we are very happy to have had your business, and this transaction has worked out very nicely, but we are a little puzzled. While you were away, we checked you out and found that you are a distinguished alumnus from Ole Miss University, a highly sophisticated investor, and multimillionaire with real estate and financial interests all over the world. Your investments include a large number of wind turbines around Sweetwater, Texas.

What puzzles us is, why would you bother to borrow $5,000?”

The good ‘ole boy replied, “Where else in New York City can I park my car for two weeks for only $23.07 and expect it to be there when I return?”

Revival Event Planned Energy Forum Slated Three Christian music groups from Harrisburg and across the country will gather for “Coming Home - Revival 2018,� a revival event, on Saturday, Oct. 13. It will consist of two revival sessions at 1 and 7 p.m. at The Forum Auditorium, 500 Walnut St., Harrisburg.

The all-day evangelistic outreach will feature two live music events, with prayer teams and a short message at the end. Doors will open one hour in advance for a time of worship led by Brian Villers.

The event will feature music from Christian artists Love and the Outcome, Curvine Ministries, and the Harrisburg Revival Choir led by Karen and Thaddeus Gatling of Harrisburg. It will close with a “Prodigal Son� message by Julian Awad. Prayer teams will be available for those seeking physical, emotional, or

spiritual healing. The public is welcome to attend.

While the event is free, tickets are required and may be obtained at https://revival harrisburg.eventbrite.com or at the door if available. A limited number of tickets are available for each session.

Proceeds from the event will support mission work in Uganda by the International Bible Institute and Learning Center (IBILC). The IBILC is currently helping to build schools and churches and to develop Christian leaders in Uganda through English lessons, Bible study, and vocational training. Dog Adoption Weekend from pg 11 Several local events have been scheduled on Sunday, Oct. 14, as part of the Homes for Dogs National Adoption Weekend.

Fire Company Slates Events On Sunday, Oct. 14, Lisburn Community Fire Company, 1800 Main St., Lisburn, will host two events.
