ROAST PORK DINNER
Evangelical United Methodist Church, 157 E. Water St., Middletown, will host a roast pork dinner on Monday, Oct. 14, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. or until sold out. Boy Scout Troop 97 held elections for senior patrol leader (SPL), assistant senior patrol leader (ASPL), and troop guide on Sept. 17. Each candidate gave a speech detailing why he was seeking a vote for the desired office, and he then fielded questions from his peers. Ballots were cast, and Life Scout Jason O’Donnell collected and tallied the results. Star Scout Brayden Harris was selected as the SPL, the highest youth leadership position in the troop. He will work closely with the Scoutmaster to plan and lead troop meetings and activities. Brayden will appoint junior leaders, determine what Scout skills to practice, and be an integral part of the 2020 troop calendar. He said he would like to improve the troop’s electronic communication. Jesse Reigle, a First Class Scout, was voted to the position of ASPL. This is the second highest youth leadership position in the troop, essentially the See Troop 97 pg 4

Volunteers Sought For Tax Preparation Volunteers are needed to offer free tax preparation to help working families and individuals receive the federal and state tax credits for which they are eligible. No previous experience is required, and training will be provided. In tax year 2018, 272 volunteers provided free income tax preparation for low- to moderate-income families as part of the Money in Your Pocket campaign, a community collaboration of organizations committed to the economic stability of local families. Nationally, the effort is known as the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program (VITA). Volunteers filed 4,691 tax returns, resulting in more than $4.6 million returned to local families. Community Invited To Annual Habbershon Recognized By NMSC As Commended Student Slavic “Plus” Food Fest Christ the Saviour Orthodox Church, 5501 Old Locust Lane, Harrisburg, will hold its annual Slavic “Plus” Food Fest on Saturday, Oct. 5, and Sunday, Oct. 6, from noon to 3 p.m. Attendees may enjoy homemade Slavic and Eritrean specialties. Slavic offerings will include halupki (stuffed cabbage rolls), pierogi, halushki (a savory cabbage and noodle dish), Macedonian pub burgers, and kielbasa (smoked garlicky pork sausage). Eritrean choices will be tsebi derho (spicy chicken stew with spongy injera flatbread) and alicha (a sautéed vegetable dish). This year’s menu also features oven-fresh, Greek-style spanakopita. A variety of Slavic and Eritrean specialties, as well as other foods, will be available during the Slavic “Plus” Food Fest on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 5 and 6, at Christ the Saviour Orthodox Church in Harrisburg.
Alexis J. Habbershon, a senior at Middletown Area High School (MAHS), has been named a Commended Student in the 2020 National Merit Scholarship Program. A Letter of Commendation from the school and the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), which conducts the program, will be presented by MAHS principal Michael Carnes to Habbershon. Approximately 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Although they will not continue in the 2020 competition for National Merit Scholarship awards, Commended Students placed among the top 50,000 scorers of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2020 competition by taking the 2018 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).

will hold its annual meeting on Thursday, Oct. 10, at the Dauphin County Agricultural and Natural Resources Center, 1451 Peters Mountain Road, Dauphin. A social gathering will begin at 6:30 p.m., with the program at 7 p.m. Light refreshments will be served. Following a brief business meeting, the presentation will be given by guest speaker Dr. James Finley, Penn State professor of forest resources. Finley will consider ways to evaluate the effort to identify silvicultural management options that may provide pathways for enhancing regeneration. He will also discuss social, economic and ecological aspects of local forests. The presentation will include a question-and-answer session. The public is invited.
