Festival Will Feature Free Fall Fun New Beginnings Church of Middletown is planning Fall Fest for Saturday, Oct. 5, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Mason, representing Elizabethtown DeMolay, won first-place ribbons in the open level contests for the Ceremony of Light, Chaplain Prayers and Historical Lecture. There were also championlevel contests for previous competitors and jurisdictional champions in the various contests.

One of the principal goals of the Order of DeMolay is to help young men become better and more confident public speakers through the memorization and recitation of ceremonies and presentations. Mason joined Elizabethtown Chapter, Order of DeMolay, on Nov. 4, 2018, and serves as chaplain for the chapter.

Falmouth Goat Races Set For Sept. 28

Last autumn, torrential rains and soggy fields caused the Falmouth Civic Assocation to cancel the Falmouth Goat Races for only the second time in nearly four decades, but this year - barring any more severe weather - the

goats will be back.

The Falmouth Goat Races will take place on Saturday, Sept. 28, at Governor Stable Park, 101 Governor Stable Road, Bainbridge, which is located just off Route 441 in the village of Falmouth. Admission is free, with a nominal fee per vehicle for parking.

The National Civil War Museum (NCWM), 1 Lincoln Circle at Reservoir Park, Harrisburg, will hold the annual Blue and Gray Gala on Thursday, Sept. 26, from 6 to 10 p.m.

Attendees will be able to tour the museum galleries, enjoy food and beverage pairings, and see the extensive collection of artifacts on display. Cuisine will be provided by local caterers. The museum will also offer a giveaway drawing, a wine pull, and a silent auction featuring items such as a handmade quilt utilizing pictures from the NCWM’s collection.

The Blue and Gray Gala is expected to draw an audience of more than 200 people, including regional and national business leaders, local political leaders, NCWM contributing members, and tourism officials.

Local Band Seeks Members

Goat Races from pg 1

Beginner trail runners and veteran off-road racers alike are invited to participate in the ninth annual HARRC in the Park 10-mile trail run at Gifford Pinchot State Park on Sunday, Oct. 6.

Harrisburg Area Road Runners Club (HARRC) will host its ninth annual HARRC in the Park 10-mile trail run at Gifford Pinchot State Park at 10 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 6. The race will loop the lake, beginning at the Quaker Race day use area and circling counterclockwise back to the start.

The course covers a variety of surfaces.

It includes short, paved sections; grassy areas; gravel trails; wide, well-groomed dirt trails; and single-track trails with rocks and roots. There are some hills on the course. There is also a stream crossing, but with careful footing, participants may avoid getting their feet wet. The course is well-suited for beginner trailrunners, but it offers enough variety for veteran off-road racers as well.

Overall and age group awards will be presented following the race. Food and refreshments will be provided at the

finish area.

All profits from this event will be donated to Friends of Pinchot State Park, a volunteer 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that helps maintain the trails and recreational areas of Pinchot Park.

Discounted preregistration will be available at http://ultrasignup.com until Sunday, Sept. 29.

Race-day registration will be near the starting line at the Quaker Race day use area of Pinchot State Park from 8:30 to 9:45 a.m. on Oct. 6. A registration fee has been set for HARRC members, with a higher fee for nonmembers. The race is open to competitive and recreational runners, as well as hikers, provided they can complete the 10-mile course within the 2-and-one-half-hour time limit.

Gifford Pinchot State Park is located along Route 177 between the towns of Rossville and Lewisberry.

Festivities will kick off with an opening ceremony at 10 a.m., and the Elizabethtown Area High School pep band will play. Goat races will begin at 11 a.m. and continue throughout the afternoon.

Falmouth Civic Association president Nancy Putt-Hower said that as many as 60 goats race each year, with youth and senior divisions for the animal handlers. Individuals are welcome to register their goats to race for a nominal fee by filling out a form on the morning of the event. Goats will also be available to rent on the day of the race for those who would like to compete but do not own a goat. Individuals are selected from the crowd to act as judges at the finish line.

In addition to the goat races, the event will feature arts and craft stands, children’s barrel train rides, and “cow patty” bingo for adults.

Food and beverages, as well as goatthemed merchandise, will be available to purchase.

Putt-Hower emphasized that volunteers are still needed to serve in various capacities at this year’s event. Interest-

ed individuals may call 717-367-6801.

According to Putt-Hower, when the goat races first started, they took place on the baseball field on Governor Stable Road. Today, the location is no longer simply an athletic field but a popular park that the association has been able to enhance with a pavilion, bathrooms, and a playground.

The Falmouth Goat Races are a longstanding tradition that began with a joke.

According to Putt-Hower, a group of oldtimers was sitting around the village store discussing life’s misfortunes and bad luck at the horse race track. Each person owned goats as family pets, and someone made a remark that they might as well bet on the goats instead. That was all it took to spark an idea for Ken Brandt, who got to work placing advertisements for a goat race in Falmouth, listing the phone number of his friend who had made the joke. Still to this day, the Falmouth Goat Races take place on the last Saturday of September, drawing crowds from across the state and beyond.

The Village Encore Band is recruiting new members for its Christmas concert on Friday, Dec. 6, in Deike Auditorium on the campus of Masonic Village, 1 Masonic Drive, Elizabethtown. Todd DePastino will be the guest speaker at the monthly meeting of the Central Pennsylvania World War II Roundtable on Thursday, Oct. 3, at 7 p.m. at Grace United Methodist Church, 433 E. Main St., Hummelstown.

DePastino is founder and executive director of the Veterans Breakfast Club, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to gathering veterans of all eras and generations together to share their stories of service with the public. More than 30,000 different people have participated in the Veterans Breakfast Club’s programs and activities over the past 10 years.

In his presentation, “War Stories From the Breakfast Club,” DePastino will use photographs of the veterans he has met and interviewed, telling the World War II stories he has heard from veterans living in the region.

In addition to his roles with the Veterans Breakfast Club, DePastino is the author of the award-winning “Bill Mauldin: A Life Up Front,” a biography of the famed WWII cartoonist, and six other books. He has a doctorate in American history from Yale University and has taught at several places, including Way-

nesburg University, where he won the Lucas-Hathaway Award for Teaching Excellence. He lives in Pittsburgh with his wife and two daughters.

The Central Pennsylvania World War II Roundtable is a nonprofit organization that provides a forum for World War II veterans, authors, historians, and citizens to share their knowledge and experiences related to the war. Meetings are held on the first Thursday of every month at 7 p.m. at Grace United Methodist Church in Hummelstown. Meetings are open to the public, and there are no membership or admission fees.

Customers Donate Funds For Food Banks In recognition of National Hunger Action Month in September, Giant Food Stores announced that its customers raised $780,676 to support local hunger relief efforts during the biannual Bag Hunger campaign. Auction from pg 1 The 43rd annual Brethren Disaster Relief Auction, known as the largest disaster relief auction in the world, will be held at the Lebanon Valley Expo Center, 80 Rocherty Road, Lebanon, on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 27 and 28, beginning at 9 a.m.

The auction, in cooperation with the Atlantic Northeast and Southern districts of the Church of the Brethren, began in 1977 and has provided more than $16 million in disaster relief to victims of natural disasters both in the U.S. and internationally. Funds raised by the auction not only pay for emergency supplies for disaster victims, but also support volunteer disaster relief trips throughout the year.

In the past few years, funds and volunteers from the auction have helped immediate relief efforts and long-term cleanup and rebuilding in response to disasters ranging from earthquakes in Haiti to a tornado in Campbelltown.

Separate auctions will include the general auction, the children’s auction, the quilt auction, the theme basket auction, the silent auction, the heifer auction, the coin auction and two pole barn auctions. The two-day event may have as many as five auctions taking place at once.

Children’s activities this year will include the children’s auction, specializing in new items for children to be bid on only by children. A Children’s Store will offer quality used items, and a balloon

artist will create balloon animals for children. Also available for children, weather permitting, will be free barrel train rides, pony rides for a nominal donation, face painting and a Phredd concert by WJTL personality Fred McNaughton.

Other activities will include a car show, a tractor show and the Run for Relief, a 5K walk/run. There will be an area for venders of crafts and art objects and a farmers market with fresh produce and baked goods, including hundreds of pies.

Handmade on-site Amish doughnuts, soft pretzels and pizza will be available.

Artisan Alley, located in the East Hall, will feature a collection of gourmet food eateries and juried artisans. It will feature specialty coffees, German pastries, Thai rolled ice cream treats, artisan bread, specialty nuts and items from various artists.

Since 1976, Mount Calvary Christian School (MCCS), 629 Holly St., Elizabethtown, has been impacting students in a Christ-centered, family-like atmosphere. Director of development April Miller said that enrollment is at an all-time high this school year, with more than 515 students in preschool through 12th grade. The community is invited to celebrate and support all that is happening at the school by attending the annual MCCS benefit auction, set to take place at the school on Friday, Sept. 27, and Saturday, Sept. 28.

The event will kick off on Sept.

27 with a barbecue dinner catered by Harvey’s Bar-B-Q from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. In addition to an eat-in option, takeout meals will be available for pickup via the school’s Hillside Avenue entrance. To purchase tickets in advance, interested individuals may call 717-367-1649. A limited number of meals will be available on that evening for those who do not preorder.

At 6 p.m. on Sept. 27, the live auction will begin and will feature experiences and vacation packages, as well as themed baskets

created by each class from kindergarten through grade eight.

Miller said the baskets are popular among bidders each year and include themes such as Legos, children’s books, and camping.

Elementary students will perform songs at approximately 7 p.m.

On Sept. 28, an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast will be served from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m.

Silent and live auctions will start at 9 a.m. Auction chair Paula Hynum noted that more than 600 items and experiences will be part of this year’s auction.

Sports memorabilia, getaways, sporting event tickets, toys, home decor, tools, and outdoor equipment are just a sampling of the merchandise that will cross the auction block. The silent auction selection includes numerous gift cards and services such as car washes, oil changes, and cleaning. Bidding for the silent auction will close at 1 p.m.

A children’s festival will run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. with carnival-style games, prizes, and bounce houses. For a one-time fee, children will receive a wristband for unlimited admission to the activities.
