TURKEY DINNER

Evangelical United Methodist Church, 157 E. Water St., Middletown, will serve a roast turkey dinner on Monday, Sept. 16, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. or until sold out. The dinner will include stuffing, mashed potatoes, green beans, cranberry sauce, beverages, and dessert. Dine-in and takeout options will be available. There is a cost. Frey Village, 1020 N. Union St., Middletown, will host a Friends of the Arts program at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 13, featuring the gospel quartet Brothers in Grace. The D.A.W.G.S. (Dynamic And Wiggly God Seekers) Kids and Youth Club at Geyers United Methodist Church, 1605 S. Geyers Church Road, Middletown, will begin its 2019-20 season on Wednesday, Sept. 18, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. The club is open to all children and youths from age 3 through middle school and will be held most Wednesdays through April. The Little DAWGS program is for children from age 3 through first grade. Activities will include stories, songs, crafts, games and puppet shows. Big DAWGS is for youths in second grade through middle school. Activities will include stories, cooking fun, science experiments, music videos, and crafts. Both groups will end each evening together in the fellowship hall for a snack time. Participants will receive a free DAWGS Club T-shirt. Everyone involved in the program has been approved to work with children and has completed the proper background checks as required through the Safe Sanctuaries initiative of the United Methodist Church. Preregistration is not required; however, organizers request that a responsible adult always accompany their child into the building and sign them in and out each week. Jo Garvin, of the Quilts of Valor Foundation, presented a Quilt of Valor to the Rev. Dwight Edwards, a Harrisburg-area resident and Vietnam veteran, during the Capital Area’s Veterans’ Expo and Job Fair at the Radisson Hotel Harrisburg on Aug. 27. Crafted by the Middletown PieceMakers Quilt Guild, the quilt is a lifetime award bestowed upon deserving veterans and active service members for their service to the nation. Edwards served with a recon platoon in the U.S. Army from 1965 to 1966. Following his service, Edwards became a teacher, probation officer, and talk show host, all in the Philadelphia area, before earning a Master of Divinity from Lancaster Theological Seminary and pastoring several See Quilt Of Valor pg 3

The Middletown Home, 999 W. Harrisburg Pike, Middletown, will hold Pumpkin Fest 2019 on Sunday, Sept. 15, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The event will showcase more than 150 local and regional artisans, along with five live bands. Activities and attractions for the whole family will be offered, including a

build-your-own scarecrow opportunity, pumpkin painting, a petting zoo, pony rides, face painting, and caricatures. The autumn-themed festivities will also include pumpkin chunkin’ and hayrides. Dauphin County 4-H Members Earn Accolades At Fair The Dauphin County 4-H Fair took place from Aug. 8 to 10 at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex. Members exhibited projects they have been working on for most of the year. Project categories ranged from Animal Science to Expressive Arts.

The 4-H Fair began on Aug. 8 with the Family Living, 4-H Opportunities, Poultry, Pets, Small Animal, Dairy Cattle, Dairy Goat, and Horse Grooming and Showmanship competitions. Activities on Aug. 9 were the Horse Show, Rabbit, and Cavy events, followed by See 4-H Fair pg 2

will host 3.2 to Protect the Blue 5K on Thursday, Sept. 19, on City Island, Harrisburg. Runners will go an extra .1 mile in honor of police officers who have fallen in the line of duty. Packet pickup will run from 4:30 to 5:50 p.m., and the event will step off at 6 p.m. from the Carousel Pavilion. Runners who register by Thursday, Sept. 12, will receive a discount and a T-shirt. in the “Transforming Health: A Summer Read” campaign will be held by WITF on Monday, Sept. 16, at 6 p.m. at Penn State Harrisburg, 777 W. Harrisburg Pike, Middletown. The event will be held in the Mukund S. Kulkarni Theatre in the Student Enrichment Center. Sue Klebold, an advocate of mental health awareness and the author of “A Mother’s Reckoning: Living in the Aftermath of Tragedy,” will be the keynote speaker. Klebold’s son was one of two shooters involved in the Columbine High School tragedy in 1999. In her talk, titled “Reaching for Hope,” Klebold will share her story of grief and confusion in the aftermath of tragedy. An audience question-and-answer session will follow.
