MEET THE RAIDERS

Middletown Area School District has announced that the annual Meet the Raiders night will be held on Thursday, Aug. 23, at 6:30 p.m. The event will kick off the fall sports season by celebrating the Blue Raiders at War Memorial Field at Middletown Area High School, 1155 N. Union St., Middletown.

Attendees will meet members of the Blue Wave Band, the Raider cheerleaders, and the fall athletes. The 2018 Raiders footall season will kick off on Friday, Aug. 24, at Lower Dauphin High School.

FOOD SALE

The Harrisburg Area Civic Garden Center Inc. (HACGC) will sell barbecue, hot dogs with sauerkraut, beverages, soft pretzels, and baked goods on Saturday, Aug. 18, at Hornung’s Hardware, 6005 Blue Bird Ave., Harrisburg, located off North Mountain Road. The sale will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Proceeds will go toward HACGC’s scholarship fund or other community projects.

Hannah Wilsbach, a member of the Middletown Area High School (MAHS) Class of 2019 and part of its Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) group, achieved a gold medal in the Nutrition and Wellness event at the annual FCCLA National Leadership Conference. Wilsbach joined more than 7,500 FCCLA student members and advisers in Atlanta from June 28 to July 2, where they participated in the competition, career training, and workshops.

Wilsbach’s award-winning project had a direct impact on MAHS athletes.

She planned monthly menus and exercise plans for each member of the volleyball team after assessing health and performance goals. At the state competition, Wilsbach won a $1,000 grant to purchase healthy smoothie makers and exercise equipment for each participant in the project.

Her participation in the state and

national competitions was financially supported by the Blue and Gold Club, the Middletown Area Blue Raider Foundation, the Middletown Alumni Association, and the Middletown Area Educators Association.

FCCLA is a student organization that strives to help youths become leaders and address important personal, family, work, and societal issues through Family and Consumer Sciences education.

FCCLA has more than 160,000 members and more than 5,300 chapters from 49 state associations, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands.

The MAHS FCCLA chapter is involved in the community. Chapter members sponsor a field trip for third-graders each year, volunteer at the Ronald McDonald House, assist with the RaiderPacks program, maintain the MAHS vegetable garden, support the military, and celebrate cultural diversity with their annual event called World Tour.

Mount Gretna Art Show Slated The 44th annual Mount Gretna Art Show will be held on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 18 and 19, on the streets and in the parks of Mount Gretna, on the historic grounds of the Pennsylvania Chautauqua. The Mount Gretna Art Show features fine artists and craftspeople from across the country. This year’s show

Living History Encampment Slated The National Civil War Museum, 1 Lincoln Circle at Reservoir Park, Harrisburg, has announced that the final 2018 Summer Living History Encampment will take place on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 18 and 19, with the 2nd Rhode Island, Co. B. Saturday demonstrations will be at 11 a.m., 1 p.m., and 3 p.m., with Sunday demonstrations at 1 and 3 p.m.

Encampments will include infantry units, loading and firing demonstrations,

and more, allowing museum visitors to see the flash and smell the smoke of Civil War muskets and rifles. Visitors are encouraged to visit the camps and ask living historians questions about their attire, food rations, and daily life.

Mandy Oberholtzer first heard about Children’s Playroom from another mom she met at the playground and decided to check it out. That was three years ago, and Mandy and her husband, Brian, and their two children are signed up for a fourth year at Children’s Playroom this fall. “It gives you so many tools to use with kids this age,” said Mandy, adding that the setting fosters a natural “village” of support. “Everybody is going through the same stuff or will be at some point.”

According to executive director Vicki Dolan, Children’s Playroom’s main function is as a parenting support group that exists to let people know that there are others who are going through the same parenting difficulties and that they are not alone. “It’s about parenting with a purpose and making each child feel a sense of belonging and significance and that they are capable,” Dolan shared.

Parents and young children from birth through age 6 - are welcome to register to attend Children’s Playroom once a week at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 398 N. Locust St., Elizabethtown. Sessions are offered from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, or Thursdays beginning on Tuesday, Sept. 18, and continuing through May. Space is limited. followed by a time where parents split off for discussion while the children have supervised activities in another room.

Children’s Playroom was the first place Mandy had ever left her oldest child in the care of someone who was not a family member, and she said the staff did a great job of helping to ease his separation anxiety. “It was so comforting to know he was with people who loved and cared for him and had the same parenting philosophies as we do,” recalled Mandy. Brian and Mandy’s children look forward to attending Children’s Playroom, where they not only get to play with new toys but also make a craft, have a snack, and interact with friends.

“You’re always in the next room too,” mentioned Jo Hershey, who has attended Children’s Playroom for two years with her daughters. Learning new concepts at Children’s Playroom to apply in the day to day of life has given Hershey fresh perspective. “Sometimes you get tunnel vision, and it provides you with different tools you may not know of,” said Hershey.

Hershey pointed out that having discussion with other parents who are in a similar stage of life is a great way to gather ideas and solutions and share both struggles and encouragement. “You all talk about it with unbiased advice,” said Brian.

Some meetings include interactive sharing times while others feature guest speakers. A variety of relevant parenting topics are covered, such as positive discipline, child development, toilet training, bedtime routines, stress management, and relationship building.

The idea that there is a reason behind a behavior is one of the fundamentals that has stuck for Mandy. “They’re not doing what they’re doing to bother you, there’s a reason for every behavior,” explained Mandy. “(Children’s Playroom) gives you so many tools to use with kids this age.”

“I always want parents to realize there’s another way besides yelling at their child,” Dolan chimed in. “Children’s Playroom gives a safe haven for parents to come and open up with each other. Many families come back. Every year is a different season, so you need different tools.”

Food, Farming, And Family Fun At The Fair

Hummelstown resident Rachael Cassel joined 4-H as a freshman in high school and was part of the Lower Dauphin Livestock Club, which gave her the chance to show livestock at the Elizabethtown Fair. Showing pigs, dairy cattle, and beef cattle at the Elizabethtown Fair make up some of her favorite 4-H memories. “I grew up on a small farm, so I naturally gravitated toward the livestock club,� said Cassel. Going from a commercial standpoint as far as what is acceptable when selling an animal to learning what is acceptable in the show ring at the fair was a bit of an adjustment as she put meticulous effort into making sure each animal was cleaned, fitted appropriately, and ready to - hopefully - wow the judges. “There’s a lot more that goes into it than someone might think,� noted Cassel. “It’s been challenging, but I like being able to improve. It’s amazing what one individual especially with some of the little kids - can accomplish with the animals.�

Training at 4-H and receiving encouragement from those around her helped Cassel to thrive each year at the Elizabethtown Fair.

Now 20, Cassel has aged out of 4-H membership but remains involved in the organization by serving as a trained volunteer.

Sale night, which occurs midweek at the Elizabethtown Fair, is one of Cassel’s favorite parts of the event as individuals and businesses come out to bid on the animals raised by the youths. This year’s Sale of Champions auction is set to begin at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 22. “That’s when you get to see how much goes into the project from start to finish. You can’t show an animal without the help of a lot of different people.

It truly takes a village,� noted Cassel.

Aside from all of the exciting events in the livestock arena, Cassel looks forward to the antique tractor display, the rides, and the petting zoo at the fair. Fries smothered in a blend of melted cheese and bacon from a tent manned by local restaurant employees have become one of the foods that Cassel will happily wait in line for every year at the fair.

As Cassel works with children and students in 4-H, she encourages them to try different competitions and events at the fair even if they are not sure they will like them. “Some of the things you might not think you’d like could end up being your favorite,� remarked Cassel. For instance, being part of a potato judging committee was something Cassel tried out one year, and she had a great time with the experience.

When it comes to showing livestock, her best piece of advice is this: “Don’t be afraid to ask for help. You might be intimidated by some of the older kids, but you’ll be surprised are how willing people are to help,� Cassel

The fun walk - a short, noncompetitive loop through the woods and manicured grounds of Stone Gables Estate - will begin at 10:10 a.m.

A post-race lunch and brief awards ceremony will begin at approximately 11 a.m. Giveaway winners will also be announced at that time. Awards will be given to the top three overall 5K finishers and to the top three male and female 5K finishers in each age group. The single top overall runner will receive a cash prize.

on board to help raise funds for Brittany’s Hope. “Dolly trains five days a week, so she’s pretty fit. We’re very fortunate because we’re here, so we can do the course a few times before the event,� O’Callaghan said.

Brittany’s Hope is an Elizabethtown-based nonprofit organization committed to aiding orphans in crisis and helping special needs children to be adopted into forever families.

Brittany’s Hope provides grants to families that are in the process of adopting and has implemented programs in Vietnam, Ethiopia, and Kenya that provide holistic care directly to orphans.

Mai-Lynn Sahd, executive director of Brittany’s Hope, said that the organization has set a fundraising goal of $65,000 for this year’s event. That amount would enable Brittany’s Hope to provide adoption grants for seven children with special needs or help with the construction of a much-needed living residence for up to 28 orphaned children with disabilities in a rural and remote area of northern Vietnam. Sahd said the new residence will provide safe, modern, clean living space and bedrooms and feature adaptive furniture and bathrooms to enable the children to gain independence. A physical therapy room and common area for the children are also planned, and the residence will be staffed by trained professionals who can provide 24/7 medical care and help the youths to develop basic living skills.

Forty-six local law enforcement agencies throughout south central Pennsylvania are joining the Pennsylvania State Police to conduct the third targeted aggressive driving enforcement wave through Sunday, Aug. 26.

South central Pennsylvania municipal departments are from Adams, Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin, Lancaster, Lebanon, and York counties.

As part of the Aggressive Driving Enforcement and Education Project, the third wave will aim to reduce the number of aggressive driving related crashes, injuries and deaths on roadways throughout the state. Any aggressive driver stopped by police will receive a ticket.

focus on red light running, the Steer Clear law, tailgating, and speeding. Motorists exhibiting other unsafe behaviors such as driving too fast for conditions, following too closely, or other aggressive actions will also be cited.

During the last enforcement wave from March 19 to April 29, 45 participating municipal law enforcement agencies made contact with 4,376 vehicles, issuing 4,144 citations; 2,761 of those citations were speeding violations. In addition, 26 texting violations were cited, 18 fugitive apprehensions were made, and 27 impaired drivers were removed from roadways.

The aggressive driving enforcement is a part of the Pennsylvania Aggressive Driving Enforcement and Education Project and is funded by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). More than 235 municipal law enforcement agencies throughout Pennsylvania are participating.

Low-Cost Vaccine Clinic Planned PAWS and The Dogs’ Den will hold a low-cost vaccine clinic for cats and dogs on Sunday, Aug. 19, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at PAWS, 9803 Jonestown Road, Grantville. Distemper and rabies vaccinations for cats and dogs will be administered. For a three-year rabies vaccination, proof of previous rabies vaccination is required. Microchips will also

be available for a set price, which includes registration.

The clinic will be first-come, first-served. Breeders will not be serviced. Cash and checks will be accepted as payment.

New Gallery Posts First Exhibition Edward J. Webber of Mount Joy and Rebecca Pollard Myers are the featured artists in the first exhibition of the Riverfront Gallery, located in the cloister of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Cathedral, 221 N. Front St., Harrisburg. Each of the gallery’s three-month art exhibitions will feature the

works of one artist from the cathedral and one artist from the greater Harrisburg area.

Consignment fees will benefit local community programs.

The gallery’s official opening will take place on Friday, Aug. 17, as part of 3rd in the Burg from 6 to 9 p.m. at St. Stephen’s.

Chautauqua Plans Events This summer, the Pennsylvania Chautauqua in Mount Gretna will host programs highlighting crafting, music, and history.

Programs will take place in the Hall of Philosophy, next to the Jigger Shop, unless otherwise noted. Donations for all programs will be accepted.

Programs on Wednesday, Aug. 15, will include the Arts Education Series at 10 a.m., which will offer a look at the art collection of Muriel and Philip Berman with Gloria Mast of the Pennsylvania College of Art and Design and HACC; and yoga with Stephanie Bost, for which there is a fee, at 4 p.m. “Healthy Relationships & Emotional Intelligence” is cancelled.

The annual Mount Gretna Art Show will take place on Saturday, Aug. 18, from 9 a.m. to

6 p.m. and Sunday, August 19, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. There is a cost for admission for adults.

Children age 12 and under will be admitted for free.

A worship service will take place in the Playhouse on Sunday, Aug. 19, at 10 a.m. Rev. Dr. George G. Kinney, a retired pastor from the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, will lead worship with music from Joseph Sobel.

There is an admission fee. Children under 12 will be admitted for free. Discounted two-day tickets are available for purchase in advance. Ticket order forms are available at http://www.mtgretna art.com. The admission fee includes parking in designated parking locations and free shuttle bus service to and from the

Butler Road lot until one half-hour after the show closing.

Upon arrival, patrons will be directed to the appropriate parking area designated for each of the approaches to Mount Gretna. Parking areas are located on Butler Road near Philhaven Hospital and on Soldiers’ Field on Timber Road. During the art show, traffic flow in and out of Mount Gretna will be substantially altered. Parking is discouraged along Route 117 for safety reasons. All routes will be clearly marked and staffed. No pets or alcoholic beverages are permitted on the show grounds.

More than 200 volunteers from throughout the community will help visitors find their way and keep things running smoothly. Chairperson Linda Bell and Kerry Royer handle the logistics, and Bill Care and Mike Bell provide operational management.

Hearing Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz’s perspective on being injured prior to the championship game was just one of the highlights for Dave Dilworth as he listened to Wentz and several other Eagles players share and reflect during filming of “The Faith Playbook.” Dilworth, the visitation pastor at Word of Life Chapel, and youth leader Chad White were part of the audience at the live interview hosted by pastor and author Dr. Paul David Tripp on May 4 at Calvary Chapel in Philadelphia.

“This whole thing about the team’s spiritual journey was in Tripp’s mind even before they won the (big game),” said Dilworth. Once the team achieved the monumental win, Tripp followed through with the idea to interview the players about learning to live by faith in both victory and defeat.

On Sunday, Aug. 19, the community is invited to a viewing of “The Faith Playbook” at Word of Life Chapel, 139 Wickersham Road, Bainbridge, from 6 to 8 p.m. Admission is free. A brief discussion will take place after the movie, and light refreshments - including Philadelphiastyle soft pretzels - will be served.

In addition to Wentz, Tripp interviews Nick Foles, Trey Burton, Chris Maragos, Jordan Hicks, Stefen Wisniewski, Jordan Matthews, and Scott Hanson in “The Faith Playbook.”

Plus, former Eagles kicker David Akers shares briefly about sponsoring children through Compassion International. A movie trailer is available to view at http://thefaithplaybook.com.

A 60-minute segment of the movie will be shown; however, its full length is three hours.

Since the church secured a streaming license to show “The Faith Playbook,” Dilworth said they are also planning two home showings in September, and one of those might include the full three hours of the film. Dates and locations for the home viewings are still in the works and will likely be announced at the Aug. 19 event.

Recipe of the Week Chicken Stuffed Baked Avocados Ingredients: 4 avocados, halved and pitted 2 cooked chicken breasts, shredded 4 ounces cream cheese, softened 1/4 cup chopped tomatoes 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper 1 pinch cayenne pepper 1/2 cup shredded Parmesan cheese, or more to taste Directions: 1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C).

2. Scoop out some of the flesh in the center of each avocado; place into mixing bowl. Add chicken, cream cheese, tomatoes, salt, pepper, and cayenne pepper; mix well to combine.

3. Scoop spoonfuls of chicken mixture into the wells of each avocado; top each with generous amount of Parmesan cheese. Place avocado halves, face-up, in muffin cups to stabilize.

4. Bake avocados in preheated oven until cheese is melted, 8 to 10 minutes.

Library System Executive Steps Down Susquehanna Township resident Rob Lesher has resigned as executive director of the Dauphin County Library System. Lesher was director since February 2016.

Prior to his Dauphin County appointment, he was executive director of the Adams County Library System for 12 years.

During Lesher’s tenure, the library system inaugurated MARCO, an outreach van for programs and events in underserved locations within Dauphin County. He also helped to upgrade branch library security cameras with assistance from the Dauphin County commissioners.

Lesher also encouraged the library system’s participation in the Harwood Institute to better assess growing needs of the community.

Karen Cullings, director of community relations at the Dauphin County Library System, will assume the position of interim executive director while a national search is conducted. Cullings has been with the library system for 25 years, providing leadership on many projects, including several successful capital campaigns.

Grace Chapel Slates Conference Grace Chapel, 2535 Colebrook Road, Elizabethtown, is hosting a conference with Dr. Bree Keaton.

The two-day conference began on Aug. 14 and will continue on Wednesday, Aug. 15, at 7 p.m. The church is located 4 miles east of Middletown on Route 341 (Colebrook Road) and 2 miles west of Route 743 on Route 341.

Keaton began her professional career as a warm-up act for rock stars. One night, while the band was playing, she was shot in the head. Keaton survived and now

shares with people about the Lord’s healing power by leading prayer walk teams, teaching throughout the world, and holding conferences and crusades. She is an author, a psalmist, and a recording artist.
