Korean War Veterans and Defenders Harrisburg Area Chapter will meet on Saturday, July 14, at 10 a.m. at the Vietnam War Facility, 8000 Derry St., Harrisburg. Korean War veterans and Korean Defenders are encouraged to attend. Korean War veterans include those who served during the time of the war from 1950 to 1953. A Korean Defender is anyone who served in Korea after the signing of the truce in 1953 until the present time. Harrisburg River Rescue and the Keystone Aquatic Club will hold a chicken barbecue on Saturday, July 7, on City Island at the Riverside Marina, which is located across from the parking garage. Lower Dauphin Orchestra Director Receives Honor
38th Annual Jazz Festival Slated
Lower Dauphin orchestra director Melody Cliff recently received the Orchestra Director of the Year Award from the Pennsylvania-Delaware String Teachers Association. She was recognized for demonstrating outstanding achievement as an orchestra teacher and conductor, resulting in major advancement of her program with documentation of unusual success. Cliff started at Lower Dauphin in the 2008-09 school year and is a 2004 graduate of Lower Dauphin High School. The Pennsylvania-Delaware String Teachers Association is a chapter of the American String Teacher Association.
Central Pennsylvania Friends of Jazz (CPFJ) will host the 38th annual Jazz Festival from Thursday, July 5, through Sunday, July 8, with performances at the Pride of the Susquehanna Riverboat, Appalachian Brewing Company’s Abbey Bar, Hershey Library, Mount Gretna Hide-A-Way, Gretna Playhouse, and Indian Echo Caverns. The Friends of Jazz will welcome NEA Jazz Master saxophonist/composer Benny Golson, who has had a sixdecade career. On July 5, the Dave Stahl quintet will perform on the Pride of the Susquehanna from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tickets may only be purchased at

Gretna Music Sets Children’s Programs

Peking Acrobats will perform at the Mount Gretna Playhouse on Tuesday, July 24.
Gretna Music For Kids will present three shows geared for children of all ages at the Mount Gretna Playhouse, 200 Pennsylvania Ave., Mount Gretna. Ticket prices will vary. On Saturday, July 7, at 11 a.m., children’s musician Dan Zanes will celebrate folk and blues legend Lead Belly. He will be accompanied by Claudia Eliaza. The show will be sensory friendly and best enjoyed by children age 7 and under. On Tuesday, July 24, at 7:30 p.m., the Chinese acrobatic group Peking Acrobats will perform stunts and contortionism. On Sunday, Aug. 12, at 2 p.m., Ballet Hispánico will perform Latin dance forms and music in an interactive performance.

Middletown Area School District has announced that free lunches will be provided through the Summer Food Service Program, rain or shine on Mondays through Fridays to youths age 18 and under. All locations will be closed on Wednesday, July 4. Locations are as follows: cafeteria at Middletown Area High School, 1155 N. Union St., through Friday, Aug. 3, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.; Fink Elementary School, 150 N. Race St., at the War Memorial Field concession stand, through Friday, Aug. 10, from11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.; and St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, 121 N. Spring St., Middletown, through Aug. 10 from 11:15 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. There is no need to register; instead, youths can simply arrive at the location of their choice. Chocolate Tour To Support Cancer Research
A variety of running, walking, and cycling events will be offered as part of the annual Chocolate Tour in Hershey on Aug. 4, which will raise funds for cancer research at Penn State University. The annual Chocolate Tour will take place on Saturday, Aug. 4, and will offer a variety of running, walking, and cycling opportunities. Events will start at the Milton S. Hershey School Athletic Complex, 665 Brook Drive, Hershey. Options will include the Chocolate Tour 5K Walk, the Mike Geltrude Foundation 10K Walk, the Chocolate Tour
5K and 10K running races, and the Chocolate Tour cycling events, with available distances including 10, 30, 50, 75, and 100 miles. Rest stops will be available every mile for runners and walkers to enjoy local chocolate.
