Scouts and leaders from Troop 97 traveled to Dover International Speedway in Delaware to experience the NASCAR Cup Series races.

Upon arrival, the Scouts prepared for wet weather by setting up tents and a dining fly for two nights of camping on the speedway grounds.

On Saturday, they participated in the Fan Zone obstacle course and Hungry Bungee Hippos.

PennDOT Honors Star Of Excellence Recipients “P-Team” within District 8-0.

This team is composed of district design and maintenance personnel at various levels.

Under his leadership, the team has exceeded the district’s goal of reducing structurally deficient bridges by both number and also by deck area. Knoll has re-engineered how the district scopes and reviews bridge design projects, leading to reduced consultant hours by making key design decisions earlier in the process. Knoll resides in Hummelstown.

Malik has all highway occupancy-related responsibilities for the eight counties that make up District 8-0. In the previous fiscal year, he and his unit received 3,985 applications. Malik provides the key project requirements at each scoping application meeting. He also identifies milestones that need to be met so that the applicants can meet their anticipated construction schedule. Malik takes the time to ensure all are on the same page and satisfied that their concerns have been addressed. Malik is a resident of Lemoyne.

Keith Doersom, the chief pilot

from the Bureau of Aviation, has been providing the service of three people since 2012. Doersom frequently flies the governor and other high-level Pennsylvania executives on routine and emergency-based trips. In addition, he inspects and maintains the state plane, supervising and performing repairs of the engine, landing gear, and other operating components of the aircraft. While preforming his duties as chief pilot, Doersom also serves as the airport inspector and flight service manager. He is a resident of Newville.

Rich Heineman, a roadway program manager with the Bureau of Maintenance and Operations, worked successfully in 2018 to develop and implement a new section in the Maintenance Technical Leadership Division dedicated to the management of stormwater and the Municipal Separate Storm Sewer Systems (MS4) program. His development of this section has allowed PennDOT to reach out to municipalities and partner with them and Department of

Environmental Protection (DEP) to meet statewide stormwater goals and implementation of local programs.

The stormwater manual, PUB 888, and associated training outlines the state and federal requirements PennDOT must adhere to be compliant with laws and regulations. Heineman lives in New Freedom.

Erica Dutton began working for the Commonwealth 13 years ago in the Utilities and Right-of-Way Section as a clerk typist 2. She has progressed to working for two former secretaries and two deputy secretaries. In her current role as an administrative officer in the office of the deputy secretary for administration, Dutton leads several different areas that support the entire agency.

She is PennDOT’s liaison to the Governor’s Office for Out of State Travel and has served as the agency’s co-coordinator for the commonwealth’s annual State Employees Combined Appeal (SECA) campaign, a role she has held since 2015. In 2018, PennDOT raised the highest dollar amount among

all agencies for SECA. Dutton is a resident of Camp Hill.

Stephanie Shoemaker, an accountant with the Bureau of Fiscal Management, spent the last two years coordinating the “Standards of Internal Controls in Commonwealth Agencies.”

This new agenda requires the department to submit an internal controls template and create a corresponding risk assessment and monitoring plan. Shoemaker also coordinated many aspects and responses for the department’s performance audit conducted by the commonwealth’s auditor general by collaborating with deputies and several departmental organizations. She resides in Harrisburg.

Jessica Clark, a transportation planning manager, manages the 12-year program section in the Center for Program Development and Management. She has dedicated herself to transforming the biennial update of that program’s list of projects into an innovative process that educates Pennsylvanians about transportation planning and invites their participation through public outreach strategies and

communication methods.

Because of Clark’s effort, the quantity and quality of data and comments received per dollar spent on technical support are significantly more valuable for the department, State Transportation Commission (STC), and its planning partners in development of plans and programs. She and her team received awards from AASHTO Subcommittee on Transportation Research Communication and the Transportation Research Board for their work.

Clark lives in Shermans Dale.

As the complement control manager for Driver and Vehicle Services, Rayna Lemelle is the “go to” person for all things related to keeping approximately 1,400 positions filled.

Her organizational skills served her well when she was assigned the task of creating and requesting postings and execution of the hiring process for an additional 246 positions dedicated to the task of meeting federal requirements for issuance of REAL ID’s during 2018 and 2019. Lemelle is a resident of Steelton.

Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) Secretary Leslie S. Richards recently recognized 30 PennDOT employees with the Star of Excellence Award, PennDOT’s highest recognition. Two employees from PennDOT District 8, which represents Adams, Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin, Lancaster, Lebanon, and York counties, were among the honorees.

The Star of Excellence Awards are presented annually to employees who represent the department’s values of service, performance, and integrity. The recipients represent a variety of organizational positions, spanning from highway maintenance and driver and vehicle services workers, to traffic control specialists, communications staff, and design and engineering specialists.

District 8 winners Douglas Knoll and Mahzar Malik were honored at an awards luncheon at the Governor’s Residence in Harrisburg, along with six local people employed by PennDOT bureaus in the Harrisburg area.

Stone Gables Estate, home of the historic Ironstone Ranch and The Star Barn Village, will present its third annual July Fourth celebration for the community on Tuesday, July 2, through Thursday, July 4. The entrance for the rain-or-shine event will be at Newville Road, Elizabethtown.

Ticket pricing varies and includes the option of a threeday VIP experience, with a VIP Exclusive Day on July 2 from 4 to 10 p.m. General admission hours for the celebration will be 4 to 10 p.m. on Wednesday, July 3, and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on July 4. Net profits from the event will benefit Brittany’s Hope, an Elizabethtown-based nonprofit organization that aids abandoned children worldwide. With general admission tickets, attendees will have the opportunity to take self-guided tours of all of the buildings and attractions at The Star Barn Village and Ironstone Ranch, as well as the Reflective Oaks Prayer Walk and the restored Herr’s Mill Covered Bridge. Fire pits and yard games will be available for use throughout the property, and arts and crafts vendors will be set up indoors and outdoors.

Live demonstrations will showcase glassblowing, flowers, pottery, and blacksmithing. Artists Liz Hess and Terri Palmer will present painting demonstrations inside The Star Barn Museum.

Wine tasting will be offered in the arched limestone cold cellar of The Star Barn.

Upcoming camping events for Trexler Scout Reservation in KunTroop 97 will include a weekend at kletown, and an astronomy merit Muddy Run, summer camp at the badge weekend at Cherry Springs.

In the Shepherd’s Staff Petting Zoo, people of all ages may interact with alpacas, donkeys, a miniature pony, and a pot-bellied pig. Plus, tractor-pulled wagon rides and pony rides will be offered.

Train rides will be available for an added cost. A variety of food and beverages will be available to purchase as well.

The celebration will culminate with a fireworks display beginning at approximately 9 p.m. on July 4.

A limited number of VIP tickets are also available and feature VIP seating for the fireworks display and VIP parking on all three days.

Highlights of the VIP Exclusive Day on July 2 will include hors d’oeuvres and a fivecourse dinner in the Star Barn featuring a “Tomahawk” steak and wine at each table, a patriotic concert with worldrenowned Irish tenor Mark Forrest, train rides on a replica of an 1848 Pioneer Coach and a tour of a replica of the 1865 Lincoln Funeral Car, horse-drawn hitch wagon rides to and from the train, and a private tour of one of the largest collections of Fine Art Models ever assembled.

The collection is a tribute to Gary Kohs, founder of Fine Art Models, and includes onegauge brass trains, planes, automobiles, ships, and tanks.

The VIP Exclusive Day will also include a presentation and question-and-answer session with David and Tierney Abel, owners of the 275-acre Stone Gables Estate.

Patriotic Music from pg 1 The Hershey Symphony Orchestra invites the community to celebrate Independence Day a day early with the 16th annual free concert on the lawn of Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, 500 University Drive, Hershey. The orchestra’s performance on Wednesday, July 3, titled “An American Salute,” will begin at 7:30 p.m. In the case of rain, the concert will be held the following evening on July 4.

Complimentary water and ice cream will be provided by the Hershey Medical Center. Food and beverages for purchase will be offered by various food trucks parked along the perimeter of the event.

The first half of the concert will feature songs from the stage and screen. For the second half of the concert, the orchestra will present “A Salute to America,” accompanied by Hershey Symphony Orchestra

vocalists. These selections will celebrate America and provide a special tribute to the military. The concert is under the direction of Dr. Bob Sproul.

Lower Dauphin Middle School principal Jill Freedman introduced 13 students to the school board at its May 20 meeting. The students were the school’s eighth-graders who completed their entire middle school career having earned distinguished honor roll every marking period.

The recognized students are: Shannon Angerer is the daughter of Jeff and Michele Angerer. She participates in chorus, basketball, and Red Cross Club and was a member of the orchestra for two years. She is active in dance and volleyball in the community and volunteers with her church.

Abby Auringer is the daughter of Lyndell and Derek Auringer.

She participates in Student Council in school. In the community, she studies dance and volunteers at CATRA. Cameron Barber, the daughter of Heather and Erik Barber, participates in cross-country and has been a member of Red Cross Club. In the community, she is a pen pal with a senior citizen at Country Meadows.

Kelly Bastian is the daughter of Shannon and Tim Bastian. She participates in track and field and chorus. In the community, she is active in her church, singing in the choir and participating in youth group.

Jaiden Dissinger is the daughter of Jay and Lisa Dissinger. She participates in orchestra, chorus, Student Council, Believers in the Gospel, and Club Ophelia. She takes private piano and viola lessons in the community and is active in her church’s youth group.

Katelyn Economopoulos, daughter of Karen and Steve Economopoulos, participates in cross-country, basketball, and soccer as well as the Red Cross Club. In the community, she plays club soccer and is active with her church.

Joseph Goduto is the son of Susan and Robert Goduto. He is active in chorus, orchestra, jazz band, and Student Council. In the community, he plays tennis and studies karate. He also takes piano and viola lessons.

Audrey Meyers, the daughter of Diana and Dean Meyers, participates in chorus, orchestra, musical theater, and track and field. In the community, she has studied dance for 10 years at the Harrisburg Academy of Dance and the Susquehanna Dance Academy, where she is a teacher’s assistant.

Makayla Shutt, the daughter of Barb and Brad Shutt, participates in the orchestra. In the community, she is involved in Scouting and volunteered with the Hummelstown Winter Fling.

Lauren Wahlers is the daughter of Melissa Brutko and Peter Wahlers. She participates in band, basketball, and musical theater. In the community, she is involved in AAU basketball and club volleyball.

Toby Waters is the son of Pam and David Waters. He participates in cross-country, basketball, soccer, and track and field.

He represented his school twice at the state Geography Bee and also won the school’s spelling bee. In the community, he participates in volleyball.

Libraries Will Offer Free Lunch Children are invited to eat lunch at select Dauphin County Library System locations this summer. Through Thursday, Aug. 15, all children age 18 or younger can visit local libraries to enjoy a nutritious lunch on Mondays through Thursdays.

Lunches will be provided free of charge by the Dauphin County Technical School.

Lunch will be held at several locations. William H. & Marion C. Alexander Family Library, 200 W. Second St., Hummelstown, will offer lunch from 11 a.m. to noon.

Lunch will be available from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at East Shore Area Library, 4501 Ethel St., Harrisburg.

Madeline L. Olewine Memorial Library, 2410 N. Third St., Harrisburg, will offer lunch from noon to 1 p.m. Lunch will be available from 12:15 to 1:15 p.m. at Kline Library, 530 S. 29th St., Harrisburg. Snack service only will be offered at the McCormick Riverfront Library, 101 Walnut St., Harrisburg, from 12:15 to 2:15 p.m.

Children who need a bite to eat on Fridays can stop by their local library for a quick summer snack and a beverage. For more information, readers may stop by or call their local library. No registration is required to participate in Lunch at the Library.

Therapeutic Skating Program Slated Hershey Figure Skating Club will offer a therapeutic skating program and the Wheels on Ice program beginning on Monday, July 8, at 5 p.m. at the Hersheypark Arena, 100 W. Hersheypark Drive, Hershey. The five-week session is for adults and children who have developmental disabilities or who are recovering from an injury.

In the therapeutic skating program, skaters will be paired with their own volunteer buddy and work at their own pace under the guidance of a USFSAcertified coach. Participants should

bring a bike helmet or hockey helmet.

Walkers will be provided for those who need one.

The Wheels on Ice program allows those in wheelchairs to experience ice skating either independently or with an on-ice buddy.

Day. Strummer was one of the winners of this year’s American Legion Essay Contest. As a second-grader, he was chosen as a student aide for the autism support class at Reid. He has also volunteered with RaiderPacks alongside his dad. Strummer plays for Olmsted soccer and is in the Dauphin County Nerf Club and Communities that Care Youth Corps.

Katie Yoder and Jaron Imler were recognized at Middletown Area Middle School (MAMS).

Katie is the daughter of Paul and Amy Yoder. Katie has been involved in band, chorus, Pennsylvania Young Readers, Word Masters, and MathCounts, of which she was the team captain this year. Katie has been in the middle school musical all three years and played the lead role this past year. Additionally, she is the treasurer of National Junior Honor Society; placed first in the “ Write It, Do It” event at the Science Olympiad this year; and has completed disc jockey training for WMSS, where she has a shift every Wednesday.

She also played softball for two years. Outside of school, Katie earned third place in the Middletown Community Art Show and helps with her brother’s Scout troop. She said her most influential teachers have been Mark Mohar and Alison Chambers at MAMS and Mackenzie D’amour at Kunkel.

Jaron is the son of Mark and Stacey Imler. Jaron has been listed on the distinguished honor roll every marking period for all three years of middle school and has been a member of the National Junior Honor Society and a Peer Helper for all three years. He is in Student Council and was elected president this year. A two-year member of the Quiz Bowl team, Jaron was on the 2019 Quiz Bowl Championship team this year. He played saxophone in the band during sixth and seventh grades. He runs cross-country and plays soccer for both the middle school team and Penn FC. Jaron volunteers at his church and serves as a referee for soccer. He said the teachers who influenced him the most during his years at MAMS are Chris Etter, Matt Kleinfelter, and Alison Chambers.

Gabby also plays the clarinet, drums, and xylophone, and she helps the first-year band students prepare for the spring concert. Tyson is the son of Justin and Ashlee Snyder. In school, Tyson excels at math and enjoys conducting experiments in science class. He plays the baritone in band and was in Word Masters Challenge and Continental Math League. He also helped with the morning announcements at Kunkel. Outside of school, he plays on a travel basketball team, a travel soccer team, and both recreational and travel baseball.

Na’sayah, the daughter of Quortnee Noon, entered Reid as a fourth-grader. Na’Sayah said her favorite thing about school has been her fifth-grade teacher, Laura Ribec, because she makes learning easy and cares about her students. In school, Na’sayah enjoys art, reading, and writing.

She has been in chorus for two years, was selected for the African drumming group, and writes songs to perform for her family. Outside of school, Na’Sayah plays recreational basketball, enjoys cooking and riding her bike, and participates in activities at local libraries.

Excerpts from a Cat’s Diary: Day 983 of my captivity. My captors continue to taunt me with bizarre little dangling objects. They dine lavishly on fresh meat, while the other inmates and I are fed hash or some sort of dry nuggets.

Although I make my contempt for the rations perfectly clear, I nevertheless must eat something in order to keep up my strength. The only thing that keeps me going is my dream of escape. In an attempt to disgust them, I once again vomit on the carpet.

Today I decapitated a mouse and dropped its headless body at their feet. I had hoped this would strike fear into their hearts, since it clearly demonstrates what I am capable of. However, they merely made condescending comments about what a “good little hunter” I am. Idiots!

There was some sort of assembly of their accomplices tonight. I was placed in solitary confinement for the duration of the event. However, I could hear the noises and smell the food. I overheard that my confinement was due to the power of “allergies.” I must learn what this means, and how to use it to my advantage.

Today I was almost successful in an attempt to assassinate one of my tormentors by weaving around his feet as he was walking. I must try this again tomorrow but at the top of the stairs. I am convinced that the other prisoners here are flunkies and snitches. The dog receives special privileges. He is regularly released - and seems to be more than willing to return.

He is obviously mentally disabled. The bird has got to be an informant. I observe him communicating with the guards regularly. I am certain that he reports my every move. My captors have arranged protective custody for him in an elevated cell, so he is safe. For now...

Random Thought Losing weight isn’t working for me. So now I am going to concentrate on getting taller.

Recipe of the Week Chicken, Sausage, Peppers, and Potatoes You’ll need a large, heavy-duty roasting pan and a very hot oven for this delicious dish. The long oven time makes everything beautifully caramelized and the chicken fork tender.

Ingredients: 4 large links hot Italian sausage 2 tablespoons olive oil, divided 6 bone-in, skin-on chicken thighs 1/2 pound assorted sweet peppers, seeded 1 small red onion, sliced 1/2 yellow onion, sliced 4 large Yukon Gold potatoes, quartered 2 teaspoons dried Italian herbs 2 teaspoons kosher salt, plus more as needed Freshly ground black pepper to taste Chopped fresh Italian parsley (optional)

Directions: 1. Preheat oven to 450 degrees F. 2. Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Cook sausage links until browned and oil begins to render, about 3 minutes per side. While sausages are cooking, pierce them lightly here and there with the tip of a sharp knife so some fats and juices are released. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.

3. When sausages are cool enough to handle, cut them into serving pieces, about 2-inch slices. Transfer back to pan along with any accumulated juices from the cutting board.

4. Cut two slashes down to the bone on the skin side of each chicken thigh.

5. Depending on the size of the peppers, halve or quarter them and place in a large mixing bowl. Add the sliced red and yellow onions and potato chunks. Add chicken thighs and sausage pieces with pan juices.

6. Season with kosher salt, black pepper, and Italian herbs. Drizzle with a tablespoon of olive oil.

7. Mix with your hands until all ingredients are coated in oil, 3 or 4 minutes.

Transfer to large, heavy-duty roasting pan. Evenly space the chicken thighs skin side up. Position potatoes near the top.

8. Place in preheated oven until chicken is cooked through and everything is caramelized, about 1 hour. An instantread thermometer inserted near the bone should read 165 degrees F. Sprinkle with chopped fresh Italian parsley, if desired.

Try this homemade dry shampoo for dogs recipe!

Ingredients: 1/4 cup baking soda 1/4 cup cornstarch 3-4 drops lavender essential oil Instructions: 1. Combine all ingredients in a bowl and mix well. Funnel the mixture into a glass jar with holes in the lid, such as a parmesan cheese jar.

2. To use, shake a little over your dog’s coat and work it in with your hands. Brush as usual and dust your dog off with a towel if any visible powder remains after brushing.

U-GRO Unveils Facility At Masonic Village U-GRO Learning Centres has unveiled its new Masonic Village facility. Through collaborations with the Masonic Village and Elizabethtown College, U-GRO Masonic Village offers both intergenerational programming and an expanded lab school learning environment in which Elizabethtown College education students observe and teach.

Featuring 10 classrooms, a 2,000-square-foot indoor play space, and a 13,500-square-foot outdoor play area, the facility replaces Masonic Village’s existing 7,000-square-foot building, where U-GRO assumed operations in June 2018. The new facility includes enhanced educational and play features, including educational technology that uses SMART Boards and iPads; giant walls dedicated to helping children with word, color, and shape recognition; and expanded gross motor areas for crawling, running, and jumping.

The transition to the new center, located at the Shrine Road entrance to the Masonic Village campus, marks a $3 million investment. The facility includes classrooms for up to 148 children, including preschoolers, toddlers, and infants starting at six weeks of age. A private, full-day kindergarten is also offered, as well as before-school and afterschool programs and summer camp. Masonic Village is repurposing the former location into retirement living apartments for

WellSpan Launches New Record System WellSpan Philhaven has begun the process of launching a new electronic health record system that will help to transform the way it delivers behavioral health care across the region. Beginning in mid-May, the regional behavioral health organization was slated to transition to an advanced record system, starting with its Mount Gretna-based inpatient units, lab, pharmacy, patient access, and registration, among other services. Its outpatient services in Dauphin, Lancaster, and Lebanon counties are slated to

adopt the system in stages through the end of the year.

WellSpan Philhaven locations in York and Adams counties and its inpatient unit at WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital in Lancaster County have already adopted the new system. The system, a product of Epic - a national health care software firm based in Wisconsin - will allow patients to more easily connect with their care team. It also will allow for better coordination of patients’ care across WellSpan’s locations in central Pennsylvania.

Several events will be offered for young children. Space is limited, and preregistration is required for most programs.

Zinkan Receives Academic Honor Outstanding senior nominees from academic departments at Mansfield University, Mansfield, were recognized at the academic honors reception on April 9 and named at commencement on May 4. Local recipients include Cassie Zinkan of Middletown, who pursued a bachelor’s degree in vocal performance.

Zinkan was nominated for recognition by the music department. At Mansfield, she spent two years as the section leader for the sopranos of the Mansfield University Concert Choir, which went to Carnegie Hall twice during that time. Zinkan also built a sizable resume of operatic and musical theater roles.

Zinkan plans to attend graduate school to pursue a master’s degree in voice and opera. Her goal is to one day perform on the Metropolitan Opera stage.

Kingsbury will become CEO for the Masonic Villages on Sunday, Dec. 1, upon the retirement of Joseph E. Murphy, who has served as the senior executive for the organization since 1983.

Kingsbury will be responsible for the day-to-day management of all the charitable activities and functions of the Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania, which includes, in addition to the Masonic Villages, the Masonic Library and Museum of Pennsylvania, the Pennsylvania Masonic Youth Foundation, the Masonic Blood and Organ Donor Program, and the Masonic Charities Fund. He will oversee the delivery of program services; budgeting and financial reporting; facilities management; information technology and systems management; development, advancement, and fundraising; human resources; and legal and compliance. In addition, he will manage the development and implementation of strategic planning processes and initiatives to ensure alignment with goals and core mission values for the organization.

Kingsbury earned his Bachelor of Science degree in business administration and finance from Villanova University in 1992. Kingsbury returned to Villanova and earned his juris doctor from the university’s School of Law in 1995.
