Eight Middletown Area School District students were recently recognized for winning the 2019 American Legion Essay Contest. At a dinner hosted by the American Legion on March 17, the students received certificates and small monetary gifts. This year’s essay topic was “How can we address and prevent veteran homelessness in our communities?”

The winners were as follows: Class I: Reece Young, third-grader at Reid, in first place and Tobias Przybylski, third-grader at Reid, in second place.

Class II: Zoe Handwerk, fifth-grader at Kunkel, first place; Cassidy Pomraning, sixth-grader at Middletown Area Middle School (MAMS), second place; and Strummer Woodworth, fifth-grader at Kunkel, third place.

Class III: Ryan Foreacre, sixth-grader at MAMS, first place; Max Dupes, seventh-grader at MAMS, second place; and Aurora Demko, eighth-grader MAMS, third place.

Students Compete In Science Fair Golf Outing To Benefit Hartman Center

Aayushi Patel was one of eight Grand Champion Finalists at the Capital Area Science and Engineering Fair. She received other accolades, as well.

Middletown Area High School student Aayushi Patel, 12th grade, won first place in the Mathematics division at the Capital Area Science and Engineering Fair, held on March 5 at HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College. Her project, “Detecting Genotypic Drivers,” also earned her a place in the group of Grand Champion Finalists, which were the top eight projects out of 363 submissions.

Patel also received a six-year participant award, the BioGenius Award, and an invitation to the Wolfram Research Institute Summer Camp. In addition, she was the recipient of the Mu Alpha Theta Mathematics Award for the most creative, challenging, thorough, and original investigation of a project involving mathematics.

Summer camping programs at Hartman Center will benefit from the 12th annual Hartman Center Golf Outing. The event will take place on Saturday, May 11, at Fairview Golf Course in Lebanon.

The 12th annual Hartman Center Golf Outing will be held on Saturday, May 11, at Fairview Golf Course, 2399 Quentin Road, Lebanon. Golf will begin at 1:30 p.m. with a shotgun start.

Contest prizes will include a hole-inone prize. The fee to participate includes golf, the use of a cart and dinner. Funds from the outing will go toward summer programs and scholarships.

Summer camping programs at Hartman Center offer an opportunity for people to spend a week sharing their faith, enjoying the outdoors, and having fellowship. Five weeks of camp will be offered from Sunday, June 23, through Saturday, July 27. One of these weeks, from Sunday to Saturday, July 7 to 13, will have a special focus on the arts and will include the MADD See Golf Outing pg 12

Lady Raiders Ride Three Game Winning Streak

The Lady Raider softball fixed when Middletown outlasted Red Land

for a 2-1 victory. Noelle Zimmerman scattered six Lady Patriot hits and allowed a single fifth inning run to go with three strikeouts and one walk on her way to the win.

Zimmerman not only picked up the win for her work in the circle, she helped her own cause by scoring the game’s first run. Zimmerman kicked off Middletown’s two-run rally with leadoff walk in the bottom of the third. Hayli Akakpo-Martin followed with a single to push Zimmerman into scoring position. Carly Dupes hit what should have been a routine ground out but a Red Land error allowed Zimmerman to scoot around for a 1-0 lead. Two batters later Katie Fitzpatrick tripled with AkakpoMartin making it a 2-0 game after trotting home from third. Outside of Red Land’s fifth inning run, neither team was able to get their offense together leaving it a 2-1 final.

The Lady Raiders were back at it one day later, this time needing just five innings to blow by Milton Hershey, 12-2.

Both Milton Hershey runs came in the bottom of the second but Middletown had plated six runs in the top half of the frame which allowed the Lady Raiders to enjoy a 6-2 cushion. Middletown used a

four run third to push their lead to 10-2 and capped the ten-run rule victory with a two run fourth.

Jenna Alford picked up the easy win, adding three strikeouts and three walks to five hits and two runs allowed. Alford also helped her cause with a two-hit, two RBI day at the plate. Zimmerman and Camilia Martinez also posted two RBI days but did their work with just one hit. Sara Dintiman finished a perfect three for three at the plate with one RBI while Akakpo-Martin finished with a one hit, one RBI game.

The Lady Raiders closed out their three-game winning streak with another blowout victory, this one by a 22-8 final over Boiling Springs on April 17th.

Seven Middletown errors put Madison Gipe and the Lady Raider defense in some trouble early and late. The result was eight Lady Bubbler runs but just two earned runs credited to Gipe for her seven innings of work.

Gipe was able to pick up the win despite those eight runs thanks to an active Lady Raider offense that racked up 22 runs on 18 hits. Fitzpatrick finished the contest with just one of those hits but made that one count. Her big swing came in the top of the fourth via a

grand slam, turning Boiling Springs’ 4-3 lead into a 7-4 Middletown advantage.

Alyse Ulrich and Jenna Jerome kept the pressure on through the final few frames, collecting six of their combined seven RBI in the final two innings. Ulrich pushed four runs across with matching two run singles in the sixth and seventh innings while Jerome enjoyed two separate run producing at-bats during

Middletown’s nine run seventh. Jerome also kicked off the Lady Raider scoring back in the first with a fielder’s choice that put Middletown up early.

TRACK The track and field teams made the trip to Dillsburg on April 16th for a battle with the Polar Bears. The home team won both sides of the dual meet with a boy’s final of 105-45 and a girl’s final of 127.5-22.5. The Blue Raiders picked up seven wins on the day with Chris Joseph responsible for two of them. Joseph swept the hurdle events with a time of 16.91 in the 110H and 43.56 in the 300H. Krea Schaeffer gave Middletown a win in another hurdle event with her 19.83 tops for the 100H. Joci Koser picked up the only other win for the Lady Raiders, clocking a 13.45 in the 100m.

Richie Sykes gave the Blue Raiders a 100m sweep with the senior taking the boy’s side with a time of 11.61. Aiden Sessa added a win in the 800m (2:08.66) while Will Brown earned the final win with a time of 11:53.21 in the 3200m

BASEBALL So far, the only thing in April that is slowing down the Middletown baseball team is the Easter Break. The Blue Raiders head into the big Spring holiday break riding a six-game winning streak capped with victories over Milton Hershey and Susquehanna Township.

The Blue Raiders needed a late game rally to get by Milton Hershey on April 16th, scoring five of their seven runs after the third inning. That meant a no decision for starter Garrett Miller and a win for Mike Tuffy. Brady Keyser pitched a one-two-three seventh inning to wrap things up. Miller allowed all three Spartan runs during four innings of work despite nine strikeouts and just two walks. Tuffy picked up three strikeouts and the win for two scoreless frames.

Ray Truntz led the comeback bid, knotting the game at 3-3 with a fifth inning sac fly then putting Middletown

up for good one inning later with a two-run single. Avery Williams posted the lone multi-hit game but it was a sixth inning sac fly that earned him a RBI for the game and gave Keyser more breathing room in the seventh. Miller’s lone hit, a single in the third, set the stage for Truntz’s heroics as it knotted the game at 3-3.

The Blue Raiders went about their April 18th win in a different manor, plating all 10 of their runs in the first two innings. Middletown was forced to the edge of their seat to sweat out the win as Susquehanna Township chipped away at that 10-1 margin for a 10-8 final.

The Blue Raiders inflicted the bulk of the damage in the opening frame where a two-run rally flipped a 1-0 Indian lead into an 8-1 Middletown cushion. Collin

Heffner and Jaxson Senior got in on that rally with both players using a hit by a pitch to pick up a RBI despite finishing the game hitless. Scott Ash helped his cause with a two-run single in his second at bat of the first inning while Williams picked up his lone RBI with a single in his second at-bat of the first inning.

Ash ended up with the win for five and two-third innings despite allowing five of the eight Township runs. Four Middletown errors did make all but one of those five runs unearned, softening the blow for Ash who added nine strikeouts and one walk to his winning line.

Tuffy and Tony Powell each covered two-thirds of an inning in relief of Ash combining for four walks and no strikeouts with Powell on the hook for the final three Susquehanna Township runs.

TCCCA To Hold Earth Day Celebration The Tri-County Conewago Creek Association (TCCCA) will hold its 11th annual Conewago Creek Earth Day Celebration on Saturday, April 27, from noon to 4 p.m. The event will take place on the banks of the creek at Aberdeen Mills, 2405 Mill Road, Elizabethtown. In the case of rain, the family-friendly event will take place on Sunday, April 28, with all times remaining the same.

A variety of activities will be offered during the afternoon. A wildflower and tree identification walk will kick off at noon.

Tours through the old mill will

also be offered.

Visitors from a local zoo will give a live animal presentation at 1:30 p.m. The hourlong presentation will feature various creatures that are native to the area. Attendees may bring a lawn chair or blanket if they prefer to sit during the show.

At 3 p.m., the Lancaster County Conservation District will conduct a stream study with the purpose of investigating what aquatic insects are present in order to determine the health of the stream. An electro-fishing demonstration will take place immediately afterward. An

Admission to the Conewago Creek Earth Day Celebration is free. The event is sponsored by the TCCCA, part of the Conewago Creek Initiative. Other members of the Initiative, including Penn State Extension, are partnering with TCCCA to offer the day’s activities.

Hi, everyone! I hope you all had a very happy and blessed Easter! I love when my family gets together for the big dinner. I also love those chocolate bunnies and peanut butter eggs! But the main reason I love Easter, of course, is that I am able to go to heaven now because of what Jesus did for me. I know it is hard to understand, but Jesus gave His life for YOU so you could have eternal life. I believe this with my whole heart. So, before you chow down on those chocolate bunnies, give God thanks for that promise of everlasting life!

John 3:16 A little boy was selling newspapers on the corner; the people were in and out of the cold.

The little boy was so cold that he wasn’t trying to sell many papers.

He walked up to a policeman and said, “Mister, you wouldn’t happen to know where a poor boy could find a warm place to sleep tonight, would you? You see, I sleep in a box up around the corner there and down the alley and it’s awful cold in there for tonight. Sure would be nice to have a warm place to stay.”

The policeman looked down at the little boy and said, “You go down the street to that big white house and you knock on the door. When they come out the door, you just say John 3:16, and they will let you in.”

So he did. He walked up the steps and knocked on the door, and a lady answered. He looked up and said, “John 3:16.” The lady said, “Come on in, son.”

She took him in and she sat him down in a split-bottom rocker in front of a great big old fireplace, and she went off. The boy sat there for a while and thought to himself: “John 3:16 ... I don’t understand it, but it sure makes a cold boy warm.”

Later she came back and asked him, “Are you hungry?”

He said, “Well, just a little. I haven’t eaten in a couple of days, and I guess I could stand a little bit of food.”

The lady took him in the kitchen and sat him down to a table full of wonderful food. He ate and ate until he couldn’t eat any more. Then he thought to himself, “John 3:16 ... Boy, I sure don’t understand it, but it sure makes a hungry boy full.”

She took him upstairs to a bathroom to a huge bathtub filled with warm water, and he sat there and soaked for a while.

As he soaked, he thought to himself, “John 3:16 ... I sure don’t understand it, but it sure makes a dirty boy clean. You know, I’ve not had a bath, a real bath, in my whole life. The only bath I ever had was when I stood in front of that big old fire hydrant as they flushed it out.”

The lady came in and got him. She took him to a room, tucked him into a big old feather bed, pulled the covers up around his neck, kissed him goodnight and turned out the lights. As he lay in the darkness and looked out the window at the snow coming down on that cold night, he thought to himself, “John 3:16 ... I don’t understand it, but it sure makes a

and dinner. The event will celebrate the 15th anniversary of the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women movement and will encourage women to become health influencers among the women close to their hearts.

Guests will hear the stories of 15 local women who have been affected by some form of heart disease or stroke.

The event is chaired by Kathy Pape of McNees, Wallace & Nurick LLC. Proceeds from the event will benefit the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women movement.

Recipe of the Week The Best Egg Salad Since Easter was just this past weekend and you may have a bunch of hardboiled eggs left over, here is an easy but very tasty egg salad.

Ingredients: 9 Eggs 5 tablespoons whipped cream cheese 2 tablespoons mayonnaise 1 tablespoon mustard 1 teaspoon garlic powder 1/8 teaspoon pepper 1/4 teaspoon celery seed 3 tablespoons green onions, diced Directions: 1. Start by boiling your eggs. (Or, if you are like me, you have a bunch left over from Easter egg painting!)

2. In a mixing bowl, whisk together your whipped cream cheese, mayo, and mustard. Add seasonings and mix together well.

You know, I have to confess I don’t understand it either, how God was willing to send His Son to die for me and how Jesus would agree to do such a thing. I don’t understand the agony of the Father and every angel in heaven as they watched Jesus suffer and die. I don’t understand the intense love for ME that kept Jesus on the cross until the end.

I don’t understand it, but it sure does make life worth living.
