Students Learn To Program Robots A few years ago, Middletown Area School District (MASD) was the recipient of a grant from Penn State Harrisburg Capital Area Institute for Mathematics and Science, which gifted the district with several sets of robotic devices. The devices were found to be

effective in enhancing instruction, so it was decided that a set should be available in each of the five district schools.

The mini spherical robots can be programmed with an app and are primarily used to engage students in coding activities. The robots, which can change

color and make sounds, have been used

by MASD at all grade levels and in various subjects, including English Language Learning, art, coding, and trigonometry.

The robots have been featured on “Raider Newscast 13 with TIM&tim.”

On the show, four

fifth-graders at Fink Elementary School demonstrated “driving” the robots through a maze while trying not to let the robots touch the walls of the maze.

Middletown Area Recreation Alliance (MARA) invites community members to take part in the organization’s programs. MARA is a joint partnership between Middletown Borough, Royalton Borough, Lower Swatara Township, and Middletown Area School District designed to provide recreational opportunities for people of all ages.

MARA will offer events including concerts, plays, bus trips, cooking classes, paint nights, sports leagues, dances and more.

MARA is under the leadership of recreation programs supervisor Will Foster. Foster brings years of camp and recreation experience to this new position. Foster will network with area leaders and businesses in

Middletown’s Young Hoop Team Gains Experience 2018-2019 regular season and did so in stellar fashion. The Blue Raiders posted a 54-23 win over Susquehanna Township on February 7, moving their Mid-Penn Capital Division record to 6-1 and giving them a share of the Capital Division title. Despite topping Trinity, the other team with a 6-1 division mark, back on January 8, the Blue Raiders were forced to share the division crown thanks to their loss to Milton Hershey.

Ryan Berstler picked up the first of those two wins, pinning Donovan Wertz in a 132-pound clash. Quincy Reinnagel earned the second victory on the mat, pinning Kendrick Horne at 220.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL The Lady Raider basketball team officially closed the book on their 2018-2019 season last week, going 1-2 in their final three games to finish the season 7-13 overall and 4-8 in the Mid-Penn Capital Division.

Middletown opened their final week on February 4 with a 59-45 loss to West Perry. The Lady Raiders’ undoing was a second half that saw the Lady Mustangs post a 37-21 edge.

That second half surge, combined with West Perry’s 16-13 first quarter cushion erased Middletown’s 11-6 second quarter scoring edge leading to the 14-point loss.

Katie Fitzpatrick added three rebounds, assists and steals to her game high 25 points with Joci Koser the only other Lady Raider in double digits with 10 points. That left the first year skipper a team with just one senior and four juniors with only one contributing at the varsity level.

Having a large number of younger players log varsity minutes leads to losses like the Blue Raiders absorbed on February 5th. Middletown traveled to Milton Hershey where the 10th ranked team in District 3-5A sent the Blue Raiders home with a 77-36 loss.

The Spartans outscored Middletown in each of the four quarters, methodically building the 41-point final cushion. Tajae Broadie, one of the youngsters logging varsity minutes, collected seven points to top Middletown in the scoring department. Jarrod Push, a junior, checked in with six points while another freshman, Tate Leech, added five points in the loss.

The Blue Raiders were hit with another unpleasant loss on February 8 when Lower Dauphin came to town.

The Falcons handed Middletown a 7836 loss after controlling the flow for all four quarters. Sophomore Julian Nester was the lone Blue Raider in double digits, finishing with 10 points on the button. Pugh and Tyler Petroski, that lone senior, added seven points apiece.

In between the two lopsided losses, Middletown managed a near miss against Bradford’s old club, AnnvilleCleona. The Little Dutchman used a strong second half to outlast the Blue Raiders and left town with a 53-47 victory. Nester helped the home team to a 23-22 halftime lead by scoring 10 of his game high 23 in the second quarter. That outburst accounted for all but one Middletown point in the second while flipping a two-point deficit into a one-point lead.

Annville-Cleona used a 31-24 second

half run to slip away with the six-point victory. Petroski and Broadie each backed Nester with nine-point games.

The three losses spoiled Middletown’s second victory of the season.

The 55-51 win came over West Perry on February 2 with Nester notching a game high 21 and Petroski providing backup with a 13-point game.

The Blue Raiders did their heavy lifting in the opening half, building an 11-point lead behind a defensive effort that held the Mustangs to nine points in each quarter. With Middletown posting 15- and 14-point frames, the Blue Raiders went into the intermission up 29-18. West Perry did manage to outscore Middletown in both the third and fourth quarters but the Blue Raiders halftime cushion held up for a four-point victory.

Middletown did manage to have some enjoyment in their final week, topping Milton Hershey 47-29 on February 5. The Lady Raiders controlled the flow from the tip, leading to a 12-10 advantage after the opening eight minutes. That lead was doubled

in the second quarter making it an 18-14 game at intermission.

Middletown posted another strong defensive effort in the third, holding the Lady Spartans to a second straight frame with just four points. This time the Lady Raiders

managed 15 points, extending their lead to 15-points heading into the final frame. A 14-11 run through that final frame made it an 18-point

victory. Fitzpatrick posted another stellar game with 26 points to go with nine steals and three rebounds. Jae Keller added

The Garden Club of Harrisburg will sponsor a bus trip to the Philadelphia Flower Show on Tuesday, March 5. The show has the theme “Flower Power,” and it will celebrate the impact of flowers on people’s lives.

This year’s exhibits will take a holistic approach to the theme, with sweeping landscapes and artful interpretations.

The event will offer floral design workshops, speakers,

garden-related vendors, and more.

The motor coach will depart from Weis Markets on Linglestown Road at 10 a.m. and return to Harrisburg at approximately 9 p.m. A stop for lunch at a smorgasbord prior to arriving at the flower show is included in the ticket cost.

The Hershey Derry Township Historical Society will host an information session on its fall World War II tour, “In the Footsteps of Major Dick Winters.”

The information session will be on Saturday, Feb. 23, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. in the community room of the historical society’s headquarters, located at 40 Northeast Drive, Hershey. Historical society member and travel coordinator Laura Passuello will answer questions about the itinerary and costs, and previous participants will share their experiences.

This will be the historical society’s 11th year of offering the World War II European battle-

field expedition.

The Pennsylvania Farm Show, known to be the nation’s largest indoor agricultural event, features 12,000 competitive exhibits, more than 5,200 of which are animal competitions, plus 300 commercial exhibitors. The 103rd show ran from Jan. 5 to 12.

Fire Company To Host Bingo Monthly Square Dance Lisburn Community Fire Company, 1800 Main St., will host bingo on Sunday, Feb. 17.
