Hellam Township Police To Host National Night Out

The Hellam Township Police Department will host its annual National Night Out (NNO) event on Tuesday, Aug. 7, in the grass area at the Hellam Township Municipal Building, 44 Walnut Springs Road, York. The event will take place from 6 to 8 p.m., rain or shine. Area residents are invited to stop by to meet and interact with local police officers, firefighters, and emergency medical services (EMS) personnel and neighbors.

In addition to the Hellam Township Police Department, participants will include the Hellam Fire Company, Wrightsville Fire and Rescue Company, and Susquehanna Valley EMS. Hellam Township secretary Crystal Weston said this is the first time for the event to take place at the Hellam Township Municipal Building, as it was held at Barshinger Field in recent years. Organizers hope that the switch in location will be

more convenient for everyone involved.

Local nonprofit organizations and community groups such as the Kreutz Creek Library, Gateway Church, Not One More, and WIC will host booths that will offer information about the variety of services they offer.

Activities for children will include face painting, balloon twisting, a bounce house, and a reptile petting zoo. Free goodies including coloring books will be given out to children.

A sheriff from the York County Sheriff’s Office will bring a canine companion along for folks to visit with. Live music performances are also planned.

Free snacks, such as fresh fruit, doughnuts, cookies, potato chips, popcorn, cotton candy, and beverages, will be available thanks to donations by several local businesses. Food will also be available to purchase at a concession stand.

Garden Open House Planned An open house will take place at the gardens of John Rudy County Park, 400 Mundis Race Road, York, on Saturday, Aug. 11, from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The gardens and the open house are a project of the York County Penn State Extension Master Gardeners and York County Juvenile Probation, in conjunction with the York County Parks and Recreation Department.

The open house will be held rain or shine.

During an open house on Saturday, Aug. 11, community members may stroll in the gardens of John Rudy County Park. The event will also include exhibits, demonstrations, children’s activities, and more.

Susquehanna Heritage and the Lancaster County Chapter of Delta Waterfowl will present the third annual Conejohela Flats Duck Decoy Contest from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 4, at the Columbia Crossing River Trails Center, 41 Walnut St., Columbia. The event is free and open to the public.

Matt Kneisley, who serves as the Northeast Atlantic regional director for Delta Waterfowl, noted that the event is not just fun for waterfowlers, outdoors enthusiasts, and craftsmen, but also for families and individuals of all ages and interests. Watershed Stewards Slate Workshop Penn State Master Watershed Stewards will hold a Rain Barrel Workshop at the York County Annex Building, 112 Pleasant Acres Road, York, on Wednesday, Aug. 8, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. After a short program about stormwater and rain barrels, participants will make rain barrels to install at home. All materials will be provided. The barrels are recycled foodgrade barrels.

Participants may choose to paint their rain barrels after the workshop. Painting is not included in the workshop. After installing the rain barrels, participants may help save water by using the collected water

to water plants and gardens.

There is a fee per rain barrel.

said that last year’s NNO in Hellam drew approximately 150 people, and the event has a perennially positive response from the community.

“It’s a great community connection event, and I’d like to see it grow each year,” remarked Hellam Township Police Chief Doug Pollock. As of July 1, the Hellam Township Police began covering Wrightsville Borough in addition to Hellam Township and Hallam Borough. Three officers from the Wrightsville Police Department, which disbanded, are now with the Hellam Township Police Department.

Pollock said NNO is a good way

for residents to get to know the local police officers, firefighters, and emergency responders who are serving the community.

NNO is an annual community-building event held in thousands of towns across the United States on the first Tuesday in August. According to https://natw.org, the campaign promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make neighborhoods safer, more caring places to live. Aside from that, the events offer an opportunity to bring residents and police, fire, and EMS personnel together under positive circumstances.

Boats And Birds Program Slated The York County Department of Parks and Recreation will host a Boats and Birds program twice in August at William H. Kain County Park. The activities will take place on Sunday, Aug. 5, and Sunday, Aug. 26, from 9 to 11 a.m. Participants should meet at the Lake Redman Activity Area, 274 Hess Farm Road, York.

Guided by park naturalist Andrew Wolfgang, attendees will take a slow paddle on Lake Redman and look for shorelineinhabiting birds, such as the egret, heron, kingbird and yellow warbler. No birding experience is necessary. Boating will be done in kayaks or canoes. Attendees should bring a snack, a beverage, a field guide and binoculars. A limited number of binoculars will be available to borrow.

The American Cancer Society (ACS) has released new recommendations for colorectal cancer screening guidelines, including the age screenings should begin for colorectal cancer. Previously, the screening age for a person at average risk was 50.

The new guidelines have reduced that age to 45.

By lowering the screening age, the goal is to detect colorectal cancer earlier in patients who are at an increased risk for the disease.

Even with advances in detection and treatment, colorectal cancer is the number one abdominal malignancy that affects both men and women.

Roughly 1 in 20 Americans will develop this cancer, and getting a colonoscopy can help in the detection and treatment of it.

Last year, the Journal of the National Cancer Institute found that colon cancer rates increased from 1 percent to 2.4 percent annually since the mid1980s among adults ages 20 to 39. For the 39 years encompassed in the study, rectal cancer rates grew 3.2 percent annually for adults ages 20 to 39.

Colon and rectal cancer have, historically, affected older men and women. But the most recent research shows an increase in the number of adults in their 20s and 30s who are being diagnosed with these cancers, particularly rectal cancer.

Individuals already at an increased risk for colorectal cancer as a result of their lifestyle or family history may need to begin screenings at an earlier age. Individuals should talk to their health care provider about risk factors and what age they should begin screenings.

Western Governors University (WGU) recently recognized 8,938 undergraduate and 6,734 graduate degree recipients who completed their degrees since Jan. 1.

The following local residents received Bachelor of Science in Nursing degrees: Gabriella Winter of Columbia, Ashley Russell of Marietta, Shelly Blough of Mountville, and Kesia Cicero of Wrightsville. The York Symphony Orchestra (YSO) has announced that its 2018-19 season is themed “HEROES!” It will feature performances - including six Classical Series concerts, four Pops Series concerts, and the annual Young Person’s Concert - inspired by musical heroes, national heroes, heroes from olden times, sports heroes, and superheroes. On Oct. 6, “The Eroica” (Heroic Symphony) by Beethoven will feature the Egmont Overture portraying the life and heroism of the 16th-century Count of Egmont, with YSO principal trumpeter Nathan Clark performing the Hummel Trumpet Concerto. “Musical Heroes,” set for Nov. 3, will pay homage to Leonard Bernstein in celebration of his 100th birthday in 2018 with concertmaster Denise Dillenbeck performing his “Serenade” inspired by Plato; it will conclude with Johannes Brahms’ first symphony. On Jan. 19, 2019, “National Heroes,” featuring guest pianist Natasha Paremski, will highlight composers who were considered heroes in their homelands, including Dmitri Shostakovich in Russia and Jean Sibelius in Finland, and it will commemorate the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. “Knights in Shining Armor,” set for March 9, 2019, will feature Beethoven’s “Overture to Leonore” and will conclude with Bruckner’s fourth symphony, which is subtitled “The Romantic.” On April 6, 2019, “Heroes From Olden Times” will feature guest vocalists and will showcase the York Symphony Chorus’

Pops Series concerts will include “Heroes and Superheroes” on Sunday, Sept. 23, at 2 p.m., which will share the music of America’s TV and film caped crusaders. Families and children are encouraged to dress as their favorite hero or superhero.

“Holiday Pops,” the YSO’s annual holiday concert, will take place on Saturday, Nov. 24, at 2 and 7:30 p.m. and will feature the York Symphony Chorus and Greater York Dance. “Tribute to David Bowie” on Saturday, Feb. 16, 2019, at 7:30 p.m., will showcase Bowie’s hits and will feature guest artist Jeans ’n Classics and guest conductor Chelsea Tipton II. On Saturday, May 4, 2019, at 7:30 p.m., “Sports Orchestrated” will highlight well-known sports music, from “Rocky” and “Chariots of Fire” to pieces from the Olympic Games and professional football, with surprise celebrities slated to attend.

The annual Young Person’s Concert, “Mozart’s Magnificent Voyage,” will take place at 10 a.m. on Wednesday and Thursday, Oct. 31 and Nov. 1. The family-friendly performance will feature assistant conductor Stephen Czarkowski.

personal history of other cancers, including ovarian, uterine, gastric, and breast; a history of inflammatory bowel disease; and a personal history of radiation to the abdomen or pelvic area as a result of cancer treatment.

The ACS’ new guidelines also issue recommendations about colorectal cancer screening methods. While colonoscopy remains the gold standard for both the detection and treatment of colorectal cancer and precancerous polyps, other options are available.

In its new guidelines, the ACS recommends choosing from six different types of screening tests. Screenings include a highly sensitive fecal immunochemical test, a highly sensitive guaiac-based fecal occult blood test, multi-targeted stool DNA tests every three years, a colonoscopy every 10 years, a virtual colonoscopy (CT colonography) every five years, and flexible sigmoidoscopy every five years.

These screening recommendations are for every patient, and it does not matter which method they choose. However, if a test is positive, people should make sure to follow up with their health care provider, as they will then require a colonoscopy. A colonoscopy can detect potentially cancerous polyps and lesions before they develop into cancer or a more progressive form of cancer.

If individuals notice any of the symptoms of colorectal cancer, regardless of their age or health status, they should call their health care provider.

Symptoms include a change in bowel habits, like diarrhea or constipation; rectal bleeding; blood in the stool; abdominal pain or cramping; weakness and fatigue; and unintended weight loss. Timely treatment can affect the choice of treatment options and survival.

Dog demonstrations will begin at 9 a.m. and continue throughout the day. A professional trainer from the Wilkes-Barre area will present demonstrations with American water spaniels, Labrador retrievers, and other species trained to hunt in the water and in fields. “We’ll be running them on ground and in the water. The nice part is that we’ll have so many dogs that we can rotate them so the dogs won’t get tired,” said Kneisley, noting that people may be surprised to learn about the many things a hunting dog can be trained to do and the time that can take.

Duck hunting boats dating back to the 1940s will be on display on shore for attendees to see, and owners will share about the history the boats played in hunting the Susquehanna River. Rollover boats and bushwhack or sculling rigs will be among those on display.

According to Kneisley, decoys have played a large role in the history of Lancaster and York counties as far as how the area was hunted.

“Columbia has been wellversed in duck hunting for years,” added Kneisley.

Registration for the duck decoy contest will open at 10 a.m., and judging will begin at 11 a.m. Decoys will float in the Susquehanna River approximately 20 feet from the shoreline, where judging will be conducted. “This is a different style competition, because the birds are out into the water,” explained Kneisley. “They have to judge the birds in a live situation.” Carvers from Pennsylvania and several surrounding states will participate.

Entries must be original handmade waterfowl-related decoys made of wood, cork, or foam. Each decoy must float upright and have a 12-foot string and a weight attached.

There is a set fee to enter one decoy, and the fee will be lower for each entry thereafter. Individuals may enter as many decoys as they wish.

An awards ceremony is planned for approximately 3 p.m. The contest will feature a division for adults and another for youths age 16 and under. The top three winners in each species for each division will receive a ribbon, and the best of show winners for Diver, Puddler, and Confidence classes will each receive an additional prize.

Food vendors will sell chicken tenders, fried chicken sandwiches, french fries, snow cones, cupcakes, and more. Additionally, the “River Crossing” exhibit inside the River Trails Center will be viewable for those interested in river transportation history related to canals, arks, and bridge history.

Columbia Crossing manager Hope Byers described the Conejohela Flats as an area with low-lying islands and mud flats that has been designated by the National Audubon Society as an Important Bird Area. More than 250 species of birds have been identified and seen at the flats.

Water birds, wading birds, and waterfowl use the area regularly, while large flocks of tundra swans and snow geese congregate seasonally in late winter and early spring. Byers said the flats are a popular spot for water fowling and paddling.

disease. Although researchers have not yet determined a way to prevent Alzheimer’s disease, adults can take certain steps to maintain their mental acuity into retirement.

Routine exercise may be most associated with physical benefits, but the NIA notes that such activity has been linked to benefits for the brain as well.

For example, a 2011 study published in the journal “Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America” found that aerobic exercise training increases the size of the hippocampus, leading to improvements in spatial memory. The NIA also notes that one study indicated exercise stimulated the brain’s ability to maintain old network connections and make new ones vital to cognitive health.

Avid readers may be happy to learn that one of their favorite pastimes can improve the efficiency of their cognitive systems while delaying such systems’ decline. A 2013 study published in the journal “Neurology” by researchers at Chicago’s Rush University Medical Center found that mentally active lifestyles may not prevent the formations of plaques and tangles associated with Alzheimer’s disease, but such lifestyles decreases the likelihood that the presence of plaques or tangles will impair cognitive function.

Maintaining social connections with family, friends, and community members also can help women prevent cognitive decline. Epidemiologist Bryan James of the Rush Alzheimer’s Disease Center studied how social activity affected cognitive decline, ultimately noting that the rate of cognitive decline was considerably lower among men and women who maintained social contact than it was among those with low levels of social activity.

Area Partners Receive Funds The Cultural Alliance of York County recently announced the allocation of $597,780 to be distributed to its eight partner agencies in 2018.

These dollars were raised in the 18th annual “Bringing Arts and Culture to Life” campaign that funds eight partner agencies and the Creative Impact Awards that bring arts, history, and culture to the people of York County.

The funds they receive are unrestricted funds and are based on the scores of an all-volunteer review panel made up of contributors. Every year, the Allocations Panel reviews each partner and scores its organizational and fiscal strength, leadership,

and support of the cultural sector.

As a result, the agencies receive constructive suggestions and recommendations as well as the unrestricted cash.

The funding allocated to each partner includes Appell Center for the Performing Arts, $286,089; Creative York, $45,278; Greater York Dance, $10,777; York Art Association, $7,033; York County History Center, $209,316; York Junior Symphony Orchestra, $7,813; York Symphony Orchestra, $27,047; and York Youth Symphony Orchestra, $4,427.

The gardens were awarded first place in the Demonstration Garden category of the Search for Excellence Awards program for 2014 at the state’s Master Gardener Convention. The gardens include annuals, perennials, herbs, natives, and cultivars, as well as container gardens, water gardens, a garden of grasses, and a raised bed to demonstrate an adaptive approach for people with physical challenges. The gardens also feature fruit, including apples, blueberries, blackberries, and strawberries.

Each year, the vegetable garden yields more than 6,000 pounds of produce, which is donated to local food banks.

During the open house, Master Gardeners will be stationed throughout the gardens to answer attendees’ questions.

Attendees may participate in a tomato tasting and hear a talk about tomatoes. They may also purchase fresh-picked produce and make a free flower-and-herb tussie mussie to take home. Children may participate in a scavenger hunt and other activities.

Aging is associated with a host of mental and physical side effects. For example, many adults expect their vision to deteriorate as they grow older.

Such a side effect can be combatted with routine eye examinations that may indicate a need for a stronger eyeglass prescription, a relatively simple solution that will not impact adults’ daily lives much at all.

While physical side effects like diminished vision might not strike much fear in the hearts of aging men and women, those same people may be concerned and/or frightened by the notion of age-related cognitive decline. Some immediately associate such decline with Alzheimer’s disease, an irreversible, progressive brain disorder that gradually destroys memory and cognitive skills, ultimately compromising a person’s ability to perform even the simplest of tasks.

But age-related cognitive decline is not always symptomatic of Alzheimer’s disease. Learning about Alzheimer’s and how to maintain mental acuity can help aging men and women better understand the changes their brains might be undergoing as they near or pass retirement age.

The National Institute on Aging notes that only a very rare form of Alzheimer’s disease is inherited. Early-onset familial Alzheimer’s disease, or FAD, is caused by mutations in certain genes. If these genes are passed down from parent to child, then the child is likely, but not certain, to get FAD. So while many adults may be concerned about Alzheimer’s because one of their parents had the disease, the NIA notes that the majority of Alzheimer’s cases are lateonset, which has no obvious family pattern.

Bowlers Raise Funds For Organization

During a recent Wii Bowling competition among the residents of Letort Manor at Church of God Home in Carlisle, organizer Helen Milliron and a group of like-minded neighbors raised $6,643 for Big Brothers Big Sisters (BB/BS) of the Capital Region. The funds brought the group’s two-year total to nearly $14,000. Approximately one dozen bowlers participated each

year. This year’s competition kicked off in late May at Church of God Home, a StoneRidge Retirement Living Community.

Through BB/BS of the Capital Region, mentors provide youths with support and encouragement.

Mentors offer advice, help with homework, and take mentees on excursions, such as trips to the movie theater.

The John McCoy Memorial Walk will be held regardless of weather on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 4 and 5, at the American Legion Post 26, 301 South Route 15, Dillsburg.

The walk will be hosted by the York White Rose Wanderers, of which McCoy was an active member. McCoy originally laid out the trails for this walk in 2006, and he served as a trail master for numerous walks in Hanover, New Freedom, and other areas. McCoy and his wife, Betty, walked in all 67 counties of Pennsylvania, all 50 states, most of Europe, and several provinces of Canada. McCoy passed away in 2016.

Walk start times will be between 8 a.m. and noon on both days, and walkers should finish by 4 p.m.

Lions Club’s Collection Supports Food Pantry

Herrin Earns Eagle Scout Award

The Susquehanna Lions Club held its ninth “Fill the Truck� food drive for the Northeastern Food Pantry on June 22 to 24. This year, shoppers at the Giant Food Store in Manchester donated 5,160 items for the food pantry. Lions Nevin Weirich and Art Kasper

helped to pack 209 boxes of nonperishable items for the food panty this year.

On behalf of the Northeastern Food Pantry, the Susquehanna Lions Club recognizes those who donated to the successful fundraiser.

The club’s motto is “We Serve.�

Brandon Herrin (celebrated) attained the Eagle Scout rank and celebrated with his parents, Jamie (left) and Curtis Herrin.

Brandon Herrin, 14, of York Township received his Eagle Scout rank on Dec. 12, 2017 in Troop 183, which is sponsored by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in York Township. Brandon, a sophomore at Dallastown Area High School, is the son of Curtis and Jamie Herrin.

For Brandon’s Eagle Scout project, he and a crew of Boy Scouts and community groups completed a coordinated project in Wrightsville. The Scouts and adult men replaced the badly worn split-rail fence around the Civil War-era Union Cemetery in the 200 block of Chestnut Street in the town. This was the first of several updates planned by Historic Wrightsville Inc., and it was

the third time Brandon had worked on humanitarian projects in Wrightsville. Working with Mormon Helping Hands in 2015 and 2016, Brandon helped to clear the grass and weeds along Front Street bordering the Susquehanna River in the Wrightsville area.

Brandon’s Court of Honor took place at the church on June 12. Special guest Alan Gardner, Brandon’s grandfather, of Idaho Falls, Idaho, presented the Eagle Scout award to Brandon. Brandon selected Justin Loar to receive the mentor pin.

Brandon’s future plans include receiving his high school diploma, followed by serving a mission for his church and attending college.

Annual Tractor Show Scheduled The third annual Mid-Atlantic Allis Chalmers Tractor Show will be held on Saturday, Aug. 4, and Sunday, Aug. 5, at Wertz Farm and Power Equipment, 6877 Lineboro Road, Glen Rock. Show times will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on both days. This year’s feature tractor will be the D-Series.

On Aug. 5 at 2 p.m., the Mid-Atlantic Allis Chalmers Club will hold its quarterly meeting. There will be a flea market area with some AC novelties and tractor parts for sell or trade. Food vendors will be onsite. White Rose FFA Chapter will

sponsor an ice cream truck as a fundraiser during the event. New this year, the club invites FFA chapters who have tractor restoration projects, regardless of color, to display their tractors at the show.
