50th Greater York CROP Walk Planned

EASTERN YORK COUNTY

The 50th Greater York CROP Hunger Walk will take place on Sunday, Oct. 13. Walkers and sponsors may preregister at www.crophungerwalk.org/yorkpa.

In 1970, York County held what is known as the first official CROP Hunger Walk. The more than 1,200 walkers started at Continental Square in York city and walked to Spring Grove. The Rev. Bill Sowers was the chair of the first walk and is honorary chair of the 50th walk. He is actively involved in organizing and promoting the event alongside the Rev. Patrick Walker, chair of the 50th walk.

years, are planning to walk a total of 50 miles via 12 shorter warm-up walks on Mondays and Fridays over the course of the six weeks leading up to the event.

Their send-off walk took place on Aug. 30. Members of the community are welcome to join them for their upcoming walks. On Mondays, they will retrace the route of the second CROP Walk from Continental Square in York to Samuel E. Lewis State Park and back to Continental Square. On Fridays, they will re-create the first walk from Continental Square to Spring Grove Middle School. Walker is also planning to travel 50 miles. He will walk the Heritage Rail Trail from John C. Rudy County Park to the Maryland border and back from Wednesday, Oct. 9, through Saturday, Oct. 12. He plans to walk his final few miles on Oct. 13 as part of the CROP Walk.

Individuals are invited to consider joining Sowers and Leake’s walks or taking part in one of four shorter walks.

The celebration at the Old Courthouse at Center Square will be at 2:30 p.m. WGAL’s Ron Martin, a York native, will serve as master of ceremonies and will give opening words and prayer. He will introduce the mayor of York and other dignitaries in attendance.

The program will include music, dance, recognition of CROP Walk volunteers, and a thank you from the York County Food Bank, which is designated to receive funds from the walk. At 3:30 p.m., walkers will begin walking back to their starting point.

celebration honoring CROP’s 50th year fighting world hunger will be held at 2:30 p.m. at Christ Lutheran Church, 29 S. George St., York.

This year’s goals are 1,200 walkers and $50,000 raised to fight hunger locally and around the world. A total of 25% percent of the money raised from the Greater York CROP Hunger Walk will remain in York County by supporting the York County Food Bank. The remaining 75% percent will be distributed through Church World Service to combat poverty and hunger nationally and internationally.

The York County Operation Christmas Child volunteer team will host a special event. Grace Imanariyo, who received an Operation Christmas Child shoebox gift at the age of 10 while growing up in Rwanda, will share her story at two churches in the York area.

The first event will take place on Saturday, Sept. 28, at 7 p.m., at Church of the Open Door, 8 Carlisle Court, York.

The second program will be held on Sunday, Sept. 29, at 9 a.m. at Genesis Church, 1405 Seven Valleys Road, York.

Imanariyo was born in Rwanda as the youngest of four daughters. Her mother was a teacher, and her father worked to help retirees. Imanariyo will share how a simple shoebox gift impacted her life and the lives of those around her.

Operation Christmas Child is a project of Samaritan’s Purse, an international relief organization. Operation Christmas Child aims to provide children in need with shoebox gifts, filled with small toys, hygiene items, and school supplies. Operation Christmas Child partners with churches around the world as a means of reaching out to children in their own communities.

Habitat Makes Announcement York Habitat for Humanity will embark project that will include 14 new homes and up to a 10-home repair effort on the 700 block of East Chestnut Street in the city of York. Together with city and county agencies, businesses, churches, foundations, individuals, and volunteer support, Habitat will build and repair homes to help families achieve strength, stability, and self-reliance through affordable housing.

York Habitat’s Chestnut Street Revitalization Project is a result of more than two years of planning with the local Redevelopment Authority, engineers, and Habitat leadership. York Habitat will hold a land dedication ceremony on Saturday, Sept. 28, at the build site on the 700 block of East Chestnut Street, York. All are welcome to attend.

The Friends of the Kreutz Creek Library are inviting the community to shop at the group’s annual fall book and jewelry sale.

The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 27, and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 28, at the Hellam Township Public Works building, 45 Walnut Springs Road, Hellam. Proceeds from the sale will benefit the Kreutz Creek Library and the many programs it offers to area residents of all ages.

Thousands of used books will be neatly sorted into categories for ease of shopping. Books for children and young adults will be available, as well as adult fiction and nonfiction. Among the variety of genres will be history, biography, business, cookbooks, gardening, holidays, self-help, travel, and religious selections.

A variety of gently used jewelry, DVDs, CDs, audio books, and puzzles will also be for sale.

Shoppers are encouraged to come hungry. Homemade baked goods, including cookies, whoopie pies, cakes, pies, cupcakes, fudge, and bread, will be available to purchase, along with hot dogs and beverages.

In addition to fundraising a portion of the annual budget for the library, the Friends help to promote library awareness and work together to help improve and expand library service. Currently the Friends are led by co-presidents Betty Bell and Elizabeth McKonly, vice president Laurie Ward, secretary Kimberly Judy, and treasurer Richard Blumenthal.

Ryan graduated from Lancaster Mennonite School in June 2019. During high school, he was a member of the concert and jazz bands and the chess team. He has also been involved with Penn State’s THON, Four Diamonds, and Make-A-Wish. Ryan plans to enroll in Penn State York to study information sciences and technology at a later time.

In 2018, Ryan was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, a type of cancer affecting the blood and bone marrow. He has had chemotherapy, radiation, and T-cell therapy (immunotherapy) and is now recovering from a bone marrow transplant at Children’s Hospital in Philadelphia.

Railroad To Offer Steam Train Rides For two weekends this autumn, trains on the Stewartstown Railroad will be pulled by a steam locomotive. The Stewartstown Railroad Station is located at 21 W. Pennsylvania Ave., Stewartstown.

The steam trains will operate on the weekends of Saturdays and Sundays, Sept. 28 and 29 and Oct. 5 and 6. Seven trains will operate on Saturdays, with five trains on Sundays. Rides will last approximately 40 minutes.

For the first time since 1939, riders on the Stewartstown railroad can experience the sights, sounds, and smell of an authentic, coal-burning steam locomotive.

The railroad will use the Jeddo Coal Company locomotive No. 85, called “Mack.” Mack is a 0-4-0 saddle tank engine, which means that it has four wheels and carries a water tank over its boiler, like a saddle on a horse. It was built in 1928 by the Vulcan Iron Works of Wilkes-Barre and is currently owned by John and Barney Gramling.

In 1884, the Stewartstown Railroad purchased its first locomotive, which was used for many years and sold in 1905. The railroad continued to use steam locomotives to pull its trains until 1939, when a gasoline-powered locomotive was purchased.

The Stewartstown Railroad is an allvolunteer organization that was chartered in 1884. The line was started by a number of local merchants who wanted to get their wares to customers in Harrisburg and Baltimore in a time before there were interstate highways or even paved local roads. The line used to have six passenger trains scheduled daily and carried freight multiple times a week. Nowadays, the railroad operates as a tourist line, offering scheduled trains during the year and special trains for Easter, Halloween, and Christmas.

Tickets for the steam train rides may be purchased in the station on the day of the ride using cash only or in advance at www.stewartstownrailroadco.com. Saturday schedules have trains departing the Stewartstown Station at 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m., 2 p.m., 3 p.m., 4 p.m. and 6 p.m.

Sunday trains will depart at 11 a.m., 1 p.m., 2 p.m., 3 p.m., and 4 p.m. Cab rides are also available, where a rider can be in the cab of locomotive with the engineer and fireman.

SportsRadio 98.9 FM and 1350 AM WOYK and the York County Economic Alliance (YCEA) will partner to present a career fair on Thursday, Oct. 17, at PeoplesBank Park, 5 Brooks Robinson Way, downtown York.

The collaboration between WOYK and YCEA is further supported by the York Revolution and the York Career Fair Committee.

Career fair prep sessions will be held during the first week of October, and attendees of those sessions will be able to access bus passes and gas cards and access the career fair before it opens to the public. Dates will be announced.
