CORNHOLE TOURNAMENT

Valleyview Alliance Church, 200 Alliance Ave., York, will host Cornament, a cornhole tournament and fall festival for people of all ages. The community event will take place on Sunday, Oct. 21, from 2 to 8 p.m. The cornhole tournament will begin at 2 p.m., with the fall festival activities to begin at 5 p.m. There will be two age categories: children from age 5 to fifth grade and adults. The fall festival will include Trunk or Treat, tractor rides, carnival games, face painting, pumpkin decorating, food, prizes and more. On June 18, Girl Scouts from Troop 20566 of York created a new garden project on the western edge of Woodland Garden at the Delaware Botanic Gardens (DBG) in Dagsboro, Del. The 15 Girl Scouts and nine adults worked on preparing the project since March. They selected 500 plants and four redbud trees, which they planted in one

day. According to troop co-leader Wendy Brister, a longtime supporter of DBG, the group had raised money for the project by selling native plants. Scouts also learned about native plants in troop meetings, with emphasis on the benefits of pollinators in gardens.

DBG president Ray Sander noted that DBG’s collaboration with Troop 20566 has

set the precedent for how the gardens will work with other Scout troops in the future.

Troop 20566 is part of the Echo Valley Community of Girl Scouts Heart of Pennsylvania. The troop meets in eastern York County, and the Girl Scouts attend Eastern York School District and Central York School District. Troop 20566 is composed

of mixed age groups, including Brownies (grades three and four), Juniors (grades four and five), and Cadets (grades six through eight).

“Deetour” is the story of an overly confident hip-hop dancer named Dee who is overwhelmed when she is sent to a world full of information; however, she makes a discovery there that changes her life forever. The theatrical dance performance

will showcase Hood Nation’s style and educational programming. Hood Nation is dedicated to bridging the gap between different backgrounds through dance. The group recently performed at Jacob’s Pillow 2018 Inside Out Series, a summer dance festival.

The York County Area Agency on Aging will host free classes for people to learn how to manage the risk of falling and increase activity levels. The free classes are part of an award-winning series called A Matter of Balance (MOB). MOB is meant for people who have concerns about falling, have fallen in the past, have restricted their activities because of falling concerns, or are interested in improving balance, flexibility, and strength.

This free program emphasizes practical strategies to manage falls. Participants will learn to view falls as controllable, set goals for increasing activity, make changes to reduce fall risks at home, and exercise to increase strength and balance.

Veterans Group To Host Tent At Fair Starwatch, Moonlight Bike Ride Planned Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 1032 of York will host the Veterans’ Tent at the annual York Fair from Friday, Sept.

The York County Astronomical Society (YCAS) will partner with the Sunset Scramblers for the society’s public Starwatch on Saturday, Sept. 8, at Stump Park, 525 Days Mill Road, York, directly beside Brillhart Station along the York County Heritage Rail Trail. The event will coincide with the final 2018 Sunset Scrambler moonlight bike ride.

The event will begin at 7:30 p.m. at Brillhart Station as the Sunset Scramblers embark on a 1.5-mile ride. All are invited to ride, and no registration is required. For more information, readers may visit https://yorkcountypa.gov and click on Events under the Parks and Recreation tab.

New Friends To Begin Season New Friends of York County will begin a new year with a meet and greet event, including an icebreaker and introduction of group activities to new and potential members who attend. The meeting will take place on Thursday, Sept. 20, at Perkins Restaurant, 2500 E. Market St., York. The music ministry program rehearsals will be held in the new Music Suite. There are several vacancies in the Adult Bell Choir and our Cantabile Bell Choir (grades two through six).

Women’s Group To Meet Women of all ages are invited to attend Reach Out, a community program providing fellowship for women that will take place on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month from September through May. It will begin on Tuesday, Sept. 11, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. in the fellowship hall at Stony Brook Mennonite Church, 15 Locust Grove Road, York.

Reach Out is a women’s ministry that offers fellowship, spiritual renewal, and enrichment. Programs are free unless indicated otherwise.

On Sept. 11, the program will be School Days, and attendees should bring a snack in a lunch box or brown paper bag and a school memory to share. Fun and games from school days will be featured.

Breathe Easy will be the focus on Sept. 25. A respiratory therapist will share on the intricacies of the body, focusing on heart and lung functions.

Other upcoming programs will be as follows: Oct. 9, Decorating With Pumpkins; Oct. 23, Eating Healthy, focusing on tips and recipes for healthy meals and snacks; Nov. 13, Anxiety and Depression, featuring a speaker from No Longer Alone Ministries; Nov. 27, “One Thousand Gifts,” including a talk on Ann Voskamp’s book on gratitude; and Dec. 11, Holiday Decorating, featuring an opportunity to make a holiday luminaria for a nominal cost.

The monthly craft class at Mount Pisgah United Methodist Church, 5615 Mount Pisgah Road, York (Yorkana), will be held on Thursday, Sept. 20, at 1 p.m.
