Fine Arts Festival Set

The Yorkfest Fine Arts Festival will be held on Saturday, Aug. 24, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sunday, Aug. 25, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Festival events will take place in downtown York in and around the Colonial Complex and along the Rail Trail from Philadelphia Street to Princess Street. All events are free and open to the public. Pets are prohibited.

Yorkfest will feature 100 select fine artists from across the country, free family-friendly entertainment, hands-on arts activities, food, and more.

This year’s featured artist is Fiel Patricio. Her mixed media work “World Spins Madly On” is being used in print advertisements, postcards, billboards, and festival merchandise.

The Yorkfest Juried Art Exhibition will be displayed at the Creative York gallery, 10 N. Beaver St. The public is invited to attend a reception for art and literary award winners at the gallery on Friday, Aug. 23, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Exhibits will be displayed at the Agricultural and Industrial Museum, 217 W. Princess St. An awards ceremony will take place on Aug. 25 at 2 p.m.

Creative York will present the Creative York Family Courtyard with a variety of interactive community art projects. This area will be located in the Gates & Plough Tavern Courtyard.

The Festival Marketplace will offer a wide variety of fine art for sale. ChalkWalk will feature colorful chalk murals being created along Market Street between Pershing and Beaver streets on Aug. 24. All attendees will be welcome to participate in the Community Mural Project, which is new this year. The Silken Literary Tent will feature page poetry, dramatic monologues, spoken word, storytelling, and more.

Labor Day Auction To Feature Tools And Much More

As Hospice & Community Care (HCC) donor relations manager Coco Minardi reviewed the items pulled for a photo to advertise the 35th annual Labor Day Auction set for Saturday, Aug. 31, and Monday, Sept. 2, she laughed. “An autographed football, a life-size NASCAR poster, a quilt, and a mailbox: That’s the randomness of the auction right there.�

Indeed, at first glance it might seem like the epic two-day sale is full of a jumble of items every year, but it is all very deliberate.

The things that have been donated to the auction are grouped by type, such as plants, quilts, sports memorabilia, used cars, and artwork.

This year, the event will feature a tool auction for the first time. “We work with the Amish community, and they do all of our food, which brought in $80,000 last year, but not many Amish

people attend the auction,� Minardi explained. In an effort to appeal to more Amish folks, the auction committee asked for advice, and “add tools� was the resounding response. “We called local construction companies, and hospice families have been cleaning out their sheds,� Minardi said.

Decommissioned commercialgrade tools and equipment, as well as household tools, have been donated for the auction, and they will be sold to the highest bidders on Aug. 31 from 9 a.m. to noon in the second half of the plant building. “We’re hoping we strike a chord with people who are do-ityourselfers or Amish,� Minardi remarked.

The Labor Day Auction started in Lampeter, but four years ago, the event moved to the Solanco Fairgrounds, 172 S. Lime St., Quarryville, where it has flourished. The site offers ample free parking, and there is team parking at the venue as well. Golf carts will be available to shuttle people to and from their cars as needed.

Minardi reported that the first auction more than three decades ago raised $1,300, and the advertising material was not even the size of a half-sheet of letter paper. Last year’s event brought in

$760,000. “We can’t fit all (of the details) on anything smaller than eight pages,� she marveled.

The fairgrounds will open at 7:30 a.m. on Aug. 31 and Sept. 2 so visitors may register for bidder numbers, purchase their all-youcan-eat food passes, and preview the items. The food tents will open on Aug. 31 at 9 a.m. and will feature omelets and sticky buns for breakfast and pork barbecue for lunch. Breakfast logs - those culinary delights of bacon or sausage, scrambled eggs, and cheese baked in a buttery soft pretzel crust - will be available when the food tents open at 8:30 a.m. on Sept. 2.

Minardi noted that an HCC volunteer is known to bring a cooler to the sale so she can buy two dozen breakfast logs to take home, freeze, and enjoy later. Sept. 2 will also feature barbecued chicken and ribs, as well as doughnuts made on-site. The food offerings on both days will include fried shrimp, a salad bar, fresh fruit, smoothies, chocolate milk, and more.

Minardi and the auction committee are still accepting donations for the auction. They are especially looking for used cars and quilts. A number of unique items have already been donated.

Of special note are Ty Cobb baseball cards from 1909 and 1911.

The collectors’ items will be sold on Sept. 2 at noon in the sports building. An Amish buggy will be up for bids, as well as sheds, a gazebo, and vacation stays for

large groups of people. Recommendations of delivery services for the structures will be provided.

For folks who would like to contribute to HCC without taking things home, the Day of Care Auction, which is sponsored by Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc., will be held at noon both days. Television personalities Corinne Lillis and Anne Shannon will host the auctions, during which attendees may virtually purchase days of care for hospice clients. The average daily cost of providing hospice care for one person is $187, Minardi said.

The proceeds from the Labor Day Auction will go directly to HCC’s programs. The nonprofit organization has operations in Lancaster and York counties and provides palliative care, bereavement help, chaplain and auxiliary services, individual and group counseling, physical and online resource libraries, and more. In 2018, HCC served more than 15,000 families. Minardi noted that HCC serves more than 60 percent of the people who die in Lancaster County and a quarter of the deceased in York County. HCC also offers services for people who have experienced tragic loss, including the death of pets.

The Historic Codorus Creek Boat Parade by the Stewards of the Lower Susquehanna will launch at 2 p.m. on Aug. 24 from Bantz Park.

Games are played throughout the week. Bingo is played on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 12:45 p.m., with the first card free, and on Wednesdays for all cash as a fundraiser, with doors opening at 5 p.m. and bingo starting at 6:30 p.m. The center offers shuffleboard on Mondays and Tuesdays from 9 to 11 a.m., and additional players are being sought. All are welcome to play or watch. Board games, cards and jigsaw puzzles are also available.

Volunteers are sought to deliver hot meals to home-bound seniors. The center delivers the meals three mornings a week.

This is an unpaid position, but training will be provided and volunteer mileage may be tax deductible.

Food Bank Receives Grant The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank has received a $5,000 grant from the Walmart Foundation to help fight hunger in the Food Bank’s 27-county service area through Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) application assistance.

With this grant, the food bank will scale access to SNAP among eligible households, with particular emphasis on reaching seniors.

SNAP is a federal nutrition program dedicated to helping millions of people who face hunger. According to the food bank, SNAP improves food security, offers benefits that enable families to purchase healthier foods, and frees up household resources that can be used for

In 2018, the Master Watershed Stewards in York formed a partnership with the City of York, the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, the Lower Susquehanna Riverkeeper Association and the Watershed Alliance of York to develop the Street 2 Creek Storm Drain Art Project, a project using street art to raise awareness about stormwater runoff and the negative impacts it can have on local waterways.

Penn State Extension will host its 23rd “Are You Crazy?!” retail farm market bus tour visiting markets in Virginia on Tuesday, Sept.

24, and Wednesday, Sept. 25. The tour is designed for retail farm market professionals and will be held at the height of the season to enable participants to learn from their regional farm market peers during their best and most robust season.

The event will include behindthe-scenes tours and information directly from farm market owners, including unique display and merchandising ideas and information on market expansion and farm transition. The tour will visit seven unique farms in two days highlighting agritainment, farm market development, diversification of products, customer relations, and more. The rolling classroom environment enables market owners and managers to share lessons learned, season highlights, and discuss pertinent topics as participants travel between tour locations.

This year, the tour bus will leave from the Penn State Extension office in Cumberland County.

The tour fee includes an overnight hotel stay, bus fare, lunch on both days of the tour, and breakfast on the second day. Participants will have dinner on their own on the first day of the tour.

The 2019 David Gibby Search for Excellence second place for Demonstration Gardens went to York County’s Penn State Master Gardener program for its gardens at John Rudy Park. The award was presented at the International Master Gardeners Conference, which was held in Valley Forge in June. There were representatives from many states, three Canadian provinces, and South Korea.

The county’s Master Gardeners applied for the award before the conference, submitting information about the gardens and

the roles played by their partners, York County Juvenile Probation and York County Parks.

The gardens at Rudy Park is a partnership among the Master Gardeners, York County Parks and the county’s Juvenile Probation. The garden yields about 6,000 pounds of food each year that is donated to local food pantries. York County’s Penn State Master Gardener program also was awarded second place for a research project on plants that attract pollinators. One of the beds at the Rudy Park gardens was part of that research project.

Dallastown Area High Schoolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Class of 1954 celebrated the 65th anniversary of its commencement on June 1. Dallastown Area High Schoolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Class of 1954, the first to be graduated after the July 1, 1953, effective date of the school districtâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s consolidation, celebrated the 65th anniversary of its commencement on June 1 at Meadow Hill Family Restaurant, Longstown.

Sixteen of the 29 remaining class members were among the 25 persons in attendance. The reunion committee had announced previously the gathering would be the final one for the class, which had met regularly at five-year intervals since graduation.
