Tucked away in an office building in the heart of Lancaster County is a nonprofit organization that seeks to alleviate poverty in all its forms, including spiritual, material, social, and personal. Working

Model Airplane Club Slates Event Wing Nutz of York, a local remote-control model airplane club, has received a national grant to host a “Take-Off and Grow” (TAG) event on Saturday, Aug. 17, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at its airfield, located at 4390 Board Road, Manchester. The event is intended to introduce and promote the hobby to the public.

The event will be free and open

to the public. Pilots of remotecontrol devices are required to present a valid ID and have a current AMA registration in order to fly. Additionally, a flight simulator and trainer personnel will be available for anyone wishing to try their hand on a computer simulator. A buddy-boxing system will also be set up for those who want to try their hand at

flying an actual model airplane.

There will be food and beverages available, as well as a variety of free prizes given away.

Demonstration flights will continue throughout the day, and club members will be available to answer questions. Various models will be on display, and there will be an educational session on building one’s own planes. The

grand prize for the event, courtesy of White Rose Hobbies, will be an Apprentice S15e ready-tofly airplane complete with transmitter, batteries and charger.

Church To Hold Annual Picnic The public is invited to attend the annual church picnic sponsored

by Cross Roads United Methodist Church on Saturday, Aug. 17. The picnic will be held at Hershaull Park, 7677 Church Road, Felton, rain or shine. Waitress service will

begin at 3:30 p.m. with special seating available for those who use wheelchairs and the elderly.

Homemade chicken corn and ham bean soups will be featured.

The York Revolution recently announced that Revolution officials have found a successor for retiring team dog Boomer, who represented the team for 10 seasons. A sixmonth-old Siberian husky named Blu, recruited with the assistance of the York County SPCA, will succeed Boomer at the conclusion of the 2019 season. Fans will get their first chance to meet the incoming fourlegged ambassador of Revs Time on Sunday, Aug. 18.

The Revolution is also accepting applications for a host family for Blu. In exchange for housing and caring for Blu when he is off duty and taking him to Revolution-funded appointments with East York Veterinary Center, the official vet of the Revolution

team dog, the host family will receive a stipend and game tickets from the Revolution. Families interested in applying to host Blu should email Revolution general manager John Gibson at jgibson@yorkrevolution.com.

Blu will make his debut at PeoplesBank Park on Aug. 18 as part of that weekend’s Bark in the Park, presented by East York Veterinary Center. Gates will open at noon, and Blu will help cheer on his new team in its 1 p.m. game against the Lancaster Barnstormers.

Blu will be a community ambassador for the team and the namesake of the Revolution’s youth reading program, which will be renamed Blu’s Book Club at the start of the 2019-20 school year.

Blu, a six-month-old Siberian husky, will be the new team dog for the York Revolution. Fans will have opportunities to meet Blu on Sunday, Aug. 18.

The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank has received a $22,000 grant from the Darden Foundation to help provide more than 132,000 nutritious meals to thousands of families and individuals throughout 27 central Pennsylvania counties.

According to the food bank, one in nine individuals in central Pennsylvania, including one in six children, struggle with hunger. The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank serves nearly 140,000 people in need

every month.

The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, a member of the Feeding America network, is one of 193 food banks to receive this funding from the Darden Foundation. It is projected that this grant will enable the food bank to fund several initiatives, including its youth and senior programs and its MilitaryShare program for veterans and activeduty military personnel.

The Darden Foundation is committed to supporting fami-

lies facing food insecurity in communities across the United States. For seven years, the foundation has been working alongside Feeding America and its network of 200 food banks across the nation.

Weith, originally from Cleveland, Ohio, was drafted into the Army in 1972. He served as an armor officer in various assignments throughout the United States, Korea, and Germany.

Weith was deployed to Operation Desert Storm with the Third Armored Division out of Frankfurt, Germany. He also commanded a combined arms battalion in Berlin, Germany, from 1992 to 1994. After 25 years of service, he retired with several awards, including the Army Achievement Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, and Bronze Star.

On Aug. 18 at 6 a.m., the Belmont Street facility will no longer accept new walk-in ER patients.

York College will receive a $6 million grant from the Pennsylvania Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program (RACP) to create a Knowledge Park on the 40acre site of the former Schmidt Ault paper mill. The college’s award was among a number announced on Aug. 1 by Sen. Kristin PhillipsHill and Gov. Tom Wolf ’s office.

The former paper mill property was purchased by York College in 2008 after extensive demolition and environmental abatement.

The college has maintained the site since then, waiting for an appropriate future use. RACP funds will be used for construction expenses associated with converting three of four buildings that remain on the site into a Knowledge Park, which would allow for expansion of current efforts underway at York College’s J.D. Brown Center for Entrepreneurship. The center’s business incubator is at capacity with existing companies, some of which are ready to “hatch” and have a desire to remain connected to the college.

The buildings to be repurposed include the King House, which will become the administrative support center for the complex. Interior and exterior features will be repaired or upgraded as needed to serve the complex while maintaining the historic charm of the structure. The West End Warehouse will offer a dramatic entrance to the complex by introducing natural light, high ceilings, large spaces, and mezzanines. The Kings Mill Warehouse will serve as the interior crossroads of the complex with elevators, skylights, and large space meeting/assembly/office areas.

RACP is administered by the Office of the Budget for the acquisition and construction of regional economic, cultural, civic, recreational, and historical improvement projects. RACP projects are authorized in the Redevelopment Assistance section of a Capital Budget Itemization Act, have a regional or multijurisdictional impact, and generate substantial increases in or maintain current levels of employment, tax revenues, or other measures of economic activity.

UPMC Pinnacle has shared its plan for moving its UPMC Memorial operations from its current 325 S. Belmont St., York, location to its new facility in west York. Under that plan, the facility on Belmont Street will close, and the new UPMC Memorial will open on Sunday, Aug. 18, at 6 a.m. at 1701 Innovation Drive, York.

UPMC Pinnacle shared some key upcoming dates with the public.

The Belmont Street facility was scheduled to stop direct admissions from physicians on Aug. 11. Any currently scheduled surgeries or procedures will proceed as planned.

On Thursday, Aug. 15, emergency medical services (EMS) and ambulance services will stop bringing emergency patients to the hospital on Belmont Street.

YCHS Plans Turf Field Open House York Catholic High School (YCHS), 601 E. Springettsbury Ave., York, will welcome the community to get a first look at the new turf athletic field at the campus stadium on Monday, Aug. 19, at 7 p.m. The event will feature a ribbon cutting and the opportunity to meet members of the fall sports teams representing YCHS. Future students will have a chance to score a goal with players from the football, soccer, and lacrosse teams.

The turf field was is part of Phase I of the school’s “Grow Today, Impact Tomorrow” capital campaign designed to provide

resources for needed renovations and improvements to the high school with a focus on academic, student life, and extracurricular experiences. The other project in Phase I due to be completed in the coming weeks includes renovated classrooms with facilitywide air conditioning and is due to be coming in the near future.

Throughout the upcoming school year and summer 2020, Phase I will include upgrades and modernization to science labs and science lecture rooms; facility-wide safety enhancements, including an elevator’ and the creation of a new Student and

Media Center, which will also house a College and Career Readiness Center, student center, renovated chapel, and upgraded lobby.

Phase II of the campaign will include converting and modernizing the Brady Science Wing that serves seventh- and eighthgrade students, including airconditioned classrooms, science labs, central office, additional restrooms, and safety upgrades.

Other goals for Phase II of the stadium include home and guest grandstands, concession stand, restrooms, and locker rooms at the athletic field.

When his fishing business was wiped out in a 2013 typhoon that hit Tacloban and killed 7,000, Nico learned how to grow rice. “(Nico) got involved in a HOPE International savings group there, (participating in a) welcome, worship, Word, work, and wrap up group program,” explained Rutt. “He is just thriving.” Rutt asked Nico if he had advice for other farmers. “He said three things: ‘Trust God, work hard, and save,’” recalled Rutt.

Boycan noted that it is the design of the savings groups to give people a way to lift themselves from poverty. “The microfinancing and savings groups restore dignity and help break the cycle of poverty,” said Boycan. “People feel terrible when they are unable to take care of their families, (but) you see their dignity restored when they realize, ‘I am capable. God has given me the gifts that I need, and I can (take care of my family).’”

Last year, HOPE exceeded its goal of raising $350,000 from the tournament. Much of the money raised by the tournament is donated in the form of sponsorships. A variety of sponsorship levels are available to businesses. One package includes a HOPE trip to the Dominican Republic for 12 participants. Currently, the 2019 tournament has raised more than $200,000.

They are the parents of Brenda Laughman, wife of Kenneth, of York; Thomas Loucks, husband of Charity, of Mount Joy; and Stacy Loucks of York. They have five grandchildren.

“God’s Not Dead: A Light in the Darkness” (part 3 of the series) will be shown on Friday, Aug. 23, from 1 to 3 p.m. Susan will offer free sweet treats during the movie.

Games are played throughout the week. Bingo is played on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 12:45 p.m., with the first card free, and on Wednesdays for all cash as a fundraiser, with doors opening at 5 p.m. and bingo starting at 6:30 p.m. The center offers shuffleboard on Mondays and Tuesdays from 9 to 11 a.m., and additional players are being sought. All are welcome to play or watch. Board games, cards and jigsaw puzzles are also available.

On weekdays, a free lunch is served to any York County resident at least 60 years of age. Volunteers are also sought to deliver hot meals to home-bound seniors three mornings a week, with training provided.

Volunteer work may be tax-deductible.

GOAL Project To Offer Workshop Series The GOAL Project in Lancaster will offer the first of a three-part series on creating a sustainable addiction prevention and recovery ministry on Saturday, Aug. 31, at Calvary United Methodist Church, 11 N. Richland Ave., York. The GOAL Project wants to help local faith communities build sustainable teams that prevent substance abuse and support to those in recovery through its Face Addiction With Intervention and Training for Healing (F.A.I.T.H.) Initiatives program.

The workshop series is delivered by Faith Partners, a nationally recognized nonprofit organization that has trained hundreds of congregational teams from 22 different faith traditions in 29 states. Its evidence-based model is based on a three-phase process. The process includes Building Readiness, Equipping Leadership and Developing the Team, and Sustaining Local Ministries.

Building Readiness is a six-hour leadership workshop where clergy, ministry leaders, and key stakeholders from various faith backgrounds gather to explore their organizations’ beliefs, ideas, and attitudes toward addiction and substance use. This workshop focuses on the role of the faith community in

awareness, education, and recovery support, as well as tips for initiating a team ministry.

Equipping Leadership and Developing the Team is a two-day workshop to build capacity for ministry teams that include training, recovery support activities, tools, strategies and educational handouts. This is tentatively scheduled for Friday, Nov. 8, and Saturday, Nov. 9.

Sustaining Local Ministries will discuss how to sustain ministry teams to avoid burnout and provide a life-sustaining healing ministry. Teams continue to meet for further training and to share resources and connect to community services. GOAL provides continuing education and networking opportunities. GOAL provides local training and support as needed.

The F.A.I.T.H. Initiatives program is ideal for churches and synagogues, but is not limited to any specific belief group or tradition.

Fire Company To Host County Convention Yorkana Fire Company is turning 100 this year. In honor of that milestone, the fire company, 42 Main St., Yorkana, will host the 107th York County Fireman’s Convention on Saturday, Aug. 17.
