the SARS-CoV-2 virus, the virus that causes COVID-19. Antibodies may be found in the blood when the body is responding or has responded to an infection, such as COVID-19. Antibodies may give full or partial immunity to the virus to which they develop. However, it is not known at this time how long the body will have antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 or whether they actually give immunity to future infections from this virus.

Blood samples will be sent to a third-party reference lab for antibody testing. Results will generally be available in about 2 to 5 days. Patients may opt to receive their result via text message.

Otherwise, patients will be contacted by phone about the result.

For most patients, there is no out-of-pocket expense for antibody testing. For insured patients, the visit will be submit-

ted to patients’ insurance plans.

Patient First accepts all major insurance plans, including Medicare and Medicaid. The lab will determine what, if anything, it bills the patient.

For those with symptoms of COVID-19 and those who wish to determine if they have an active infection, Patient First also offers drive-up COVID-19 active virus testing at designated centers by appointment.

Martin Library, 159 E. Market St., York, and Guthrie Memorial Library, 2 Library Place, Hanover, are now open for limited browsing. Library members will be able to enter the two buildings to browse collections in specified areas.

Patient First now offers COVID-19 antibody testing at all its medical centers on a walk-in basis. Testing is available from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. Appointments are not needed for antibody testing.

The antibody test is used to determine if someone previously had COVID-19 and not to diagnose an active infection. Antibody testing is for patients who believe they may have had COVID-19 in the past, who are not currently experiencing symptoms of COVID-19, and who are at least age 5.

York YMCA To Offer Child Care The York YMCA, located at 543 N. Newberry St., York, recently announced enrollment for its Child Development program for children ages 1 to 5.

According to Child Development director Ashley Zurawski, many new protocols and procedures have been put in place in accordance with the latest directives from the CDC, and staff members have had extensive training on these changes.

Procedures will include curbside dropoff and pickup, health screenings prior to entering the building, masks for anyone age 2 and older, social distancing when possible, cleaning high-touch surfaces at least once an hour and cleaning toys between each use.

In addition, all hard-to-clean toys have been put away, all nap items are being washed on-site daily and there is nothing going back and forth between home and the facility, including outside beverages, food or toys.

The Child Development program is licensed by the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services.

Downtown York Awards Volunteers Sought For Nominations Sought Fieldwork Nominations are being accepted for the 20th annual Downtown First Awards, to be held at PeoplesBank Park, 5 Brooks Robinson Way, York, on Thursday, Aug. 13, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Downtown Inc. will recognize businesses, organizations, and individuals who have made a difference in downtown York through their commitments of time, advocacy, and resources.

The Downtown First Awards will honor individuals, businesses, and organizations in eight categories. In commemoration of the event’s 20th year, a new awardee will be recognized with the Change Maker Award, which will recognize an individual dedicated to creating equity for all in downtown York and developing an inclusive and welcoming community.

Nominations are now being accepted for the following categories: Outstanding Large Business, Outstanding Small Business, Outstanding New Business or Merchant, Outstanding Merchant, Outstanding Nonprofit Organization, Better York Appell Beautification Award, Outstanding Individual, and Change Maker.

Vietnam Veteran To Speak At Meeting Russell Walters will be the featured speaker at the ALLVETS meeting on Wednesday, July 22, at 7 p.m. at the York County History Center, 250 E. Market St., York. Walters will tell his story of serving in Vietnam from 1969 to 1971, where he worked with specialized units called Scout Dogs and Combat Trackers.

ALLVETS is a nonprofit organization that records veterans’ stories to help them leave their

legacies for their families. It meets on the fourth Wednesday of the month at 7 p.m. at the York County History Center.

Lead Camp Security archaeologist John Crawmer has announced approval for the archaeological work at the Camp Security site. Phase one will occur from Wednesday, July 22, through Thursday, July 30. This phase will consist of excavation and/or laboratory work. Volunteers can register for the sessions for which they are available.

Since spaces are limited and the work will start soon, volunteers need to sign up for this phase by Friday, July 17.

Phase two will primarily include surface collection and metal detecting surveys over a larger area, as well as laboratory work, including cleaning and labeling objects found during the fieldwork.

This phase will run from Thursday, Sept. 10, through Thursday, Oct. 8.

The deadline to register for phase two is Friday, Sept. 4.

This year’s archaeological explorations at Camp Security are funded in part by a Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission Keystone Historic Preservation Grant. These grants, which much be matched by the recipients, are designated for projects such as cultural resource surveys and archaeological research.

Many artifacts have been found through past archaeological work at the site to confirm the camp’s location, but the exact location of the stockade, which is documented to have existed, is still being sought so that Camp Security can be properly interpreted. The 31st annual Rotary Club of Eastern York County Memorial Golf Tournament will take place on Friday, Aug. 7, at Cool Creek Golf Club, 300 Cool Creek Road, Wrightsville. Start times will be available from 7:30 a.m. to noon or later, depending on the number of registered golfers.

The tournament will feature a two-person scramble format.

Gross and net scoring will be available to all teams; there will be one gross division, one net division, and one Callaway division. Teams must have a valid handicap index, and teams without a valid handicap will score in Callaway.

Men age 64 and under will play from the white tees, men age 65 and up will play from the gold tees, and women will play from the red tees. An optional skins game will be available for a set fee per team. All teams are welcome to participate, no matter which tee they use for the tournament.

The total purse of $3,500 is based on 75 teams, with payouts subject to change based on participation.

On July 10, the York County History Center welcomed the general public back to its sites for a reopening as the center had closed to the public in midMarch. Since York County moved into the green phase, the center has been working behind the scenes to prepare for reopening to the public. Visitors can anticipate new guidelines and protocols, including a reservation system, to ensure the health and safety of visitors, volunteers, and staff.

All on-site programs will require reservations through a new ticketing system available at www.yorkhistorycenter.org.

Most programs and events will be free unless otherwise noted.

Reservations are also required for research space in the Library & Archives.

Prospective researchers may select a half-day (morning or afternoon) or full-day option through the aforementioned website or by calling the receptionist at 717-848-1587. Nonmembers will be charged a halfday or full-day research rate.

Museum tickets are also available but not required.

Volunteers from Community REACH Inc., Grace Lutheran Church, and St. John’s United Church of Christ recently served 270 free lunches, grab-and-go style, to the community at Grace Lutheran Church, 220 N. Charles St., Red Lion.

The next grab-and-go lunch distributions will take place via a drive-through on Saturdays, July 18 and Aug. 15, at Grace Lutheran Church. Lunches for adults, for those age 18 and under, and for those with special dietary needs will be available. Vehicles should enter the Grace Lutheran Church parking lot from West High Street. Volunteers will provide the lunches to guests while they remain in their vehicles.

CHOY was established in 1865 to provide services to the orphans of the York County community. During the 1970s, the agency saw that it needed to re-engineer its services to meet the needs of the children and youths it served by providing smaller living situations. The agency responded by developing group homes and foster care.

CHOY, through the work of its board and staff members, has evolved through the years. In celebration of National Pollinator Week, the Giant Company recently announced it has completed a 7-acre pollinator-friendly solar field at its corporate headquarters at 1149 Harrisburg Pike in Carlisle. This initiative aims to create a synergistic environment, which contributes both to clean energy and support for bee and pollinator populations needed within the agriculture industry.

Honey bees pollinate $15 billion worth of food crops in the United States each year, yet populations have been experiencing a decline for more than three decades, the Giant Company reported. Beekeepers across the United States lost an estimated 40.7% of their honey bee colonies from April 2018 to April 2019, according to the latest annual nationwide survey conducted by the University of Maryland-led nonprofit Bee Informed Partnership.

A pollinator field provides Giant with an opportunity to educate team members, customers and the community about the role bees play in getting food onto their family’s table, noted Nicholas Bertram, president of the Giant Company.

Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture deputy secretary Cheryl Cook added that nearly one-third of the nation’s food supply depends on pollinators, making bees an essential part of the food supply chain and ecosystem.

The Giant Company has also been selected as the first grocery retailer and first Pennsylvania participant to take part in the National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s InSPIRE study, where scientists measure and track the performance of the pollinatorfriendly ground cover for applications to future solar energy projects. Rite Aid Launches State Farm To Offer Miracle Balloon Campaign Grants To Nonprofits

A grant funding opportunity from State Farm is being offered for nonprofits.

State Farm Neighborhood Assist will award $25,000 grants to 40 nonprofit organizations to help fund neighborhood improvement projects. In a recent State Farm research study, one-quarter of respondents said that they are “extremely� or “very� involved in trying to improve their neighborhood and six in 10 said they are trying to improve their neighborhood in some capacity. State Farm Neighborhood Assist aims to be a catalyst for that change.

A submission guide is available on the website. State Farm will accept the first 2,000 submissions. The State Farm Review Committee will then narrow the

field to the top 200 finalists.

Voters will decide which community improvement projects win. The public will have a chance to vote 10 times a day, every day for 10 days, from Wednesday, Sept. 23, through Friday, Oct. 2, for their favorite causes from the list of finalists.

The 40 causes that receive the most votes will each win a $25,000 grant. Winners will be announced on Wednesday, Nov. 4.

Last year, 163,000 people cast a total of 4.4 million votes in support of their favorite causes, selecting winners from small towns and big cities. Since the program began, State Farm has awarded $8 million in support of more than 300 causes.

WITF announced that central Pennsylvania families seeking a fun, educational experience at home can join the free â&#x20AC;&#x153;Summer STEM Adventure!â&#x20AC;?

Based on the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Engineering By Designâ&#x20AC;? curriculum, the summer camp style experience will guide families through a combination of PBS KIDS television programs, discussion questions, structured craft activities and career exploration for children in kindergarten through fourth grade. Science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education is a student-centered approach that encourages development of skills such as problem solving, curiosity, communication and design

thinking.

WITF, the Pennsylvania Department of Education and Intermediate Units (IUs) 12, 13 and 15, partnered to provide the summer camp in a format that may spark interest in STEM and its related careers, support different styles of learning, remove obstacles to participation, and meet educational objectives in a rewarding way.

The IUs recognized obstacles to participation could include families not having craft resources or broadcast television signals at home. To overcome these challenges, WITF assembled 3,000 resource bags and 300 antennas for IUs to distribute to partner locations that serve families directly. Each free resource bag contains pencils, a pencil sharpener, crayons, colored pencils, paper plates, construction paper, safety scissors, a glue stick and the curriculum packet with instructions in English and Spanish.

During the eight-week camp, families will watch featured PBS KIDS programs like â&#x20AC;&#x153; Wild Krattsâ&#x20AC;? and â&#x20AC;&#x153;Hero Elementaryâ&#x20AC;? on WITF TV to learn about animal habitats, camouflage, mimicry, structure and more. A discussion guide and key vocabulary will help caregivers talk to their children about what they are watching.

Then families will work together on an animal habitat design project using the materials in the

Lori Petraco, York County juvenile probation officer, was awarded the Respect for Law award by the East York Optimist Club on June 15.

Petraco has been employed by the Juvenile Probation Department for 14 years and is one of the coordinators of the Youth Aide program. The program works with children under the age of 18 who have been arrested and have an opportunity to have their record expunged after completing a six-month program and having no further arrests.

In the Youth Aide program, participants complete assigned projects, write apology letters and attend meetings with the panel accompanied by their parent/guardian.

The mission of the Optimist Club is to “Bring Out the Best in Kids.”
