History Center Plans Programs Paddling Adventures Await At SUSQ Camp made the redware, the materials they used, and how the pious and contrasting, often bawdy, proverbs that appear on these pieces reflect the Pennsylvania Dutchman’s spiritual aspirations nurtured by a very human heart.

York Civil War Roundtable (YCWRT) will meet at 7 p.m. in the Historical Society Museum on Wednesday, July 17. Ronald D. Kirkwood will present “Too Much for Human Endurance: The George Spangler Farm Hospitals and the Battle of Gettysburg.” Membership is free and open to anyone interested in learning more about the American Civil War. “Share Your History! Save Your History” will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, July 18, at the Historical Society Museum. The York County History Center will help attendees preserve their history by sharing information and guidance on caring for family history materials at home. Participants will have the opportunity to digitally

scan and/or photograph photographs, documents, and other family materials. With the owner’s permission, these digital images will become part of the History Center’s archives, and digital copies will be provided back for owners to keep. ALLVETS will meet on Wednesday, July 24, at 7 p.m. in the Historical Society Museum. ALLVETS is a nonprofit organization that collects the stories of local veterans.

Colonial York Day 2019 will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, July 27, at the Colonial Complex. The free festival will transport visitors back in time with Colonial re-enactors, artisans, food, music, and more.

Libraries Post Summer Hours York County Libraries announced changes in Saturday operating hours for several library locations through Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 2. Four libraries will be closed on Saturdays during this period, including Collinsville Community Library, Brogue; Red Land Community Library, Etters; Kreutz Creek Library, Hellam; and Village Library, Jacobus.

Additional York County libraries will operate from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays.

They include Guthrie Memorial Library, Hanover; Kaltreider-Benfer Library, Red Lion; Mason-Dixon Public Library, Stewartstown; Glatfelter Memorial Library, Spring Grove; Arthur Hufnagel Public Library of Glen Rock; and Paul Smith Library of Southern York County, Shrewsbury. Local teenagers with a hunger for adventure will have a one-of-a-kind opportunity to satisfy their cravings for exploration by attending SUSQ Camp, a new day camp at Columbia Crossing River Trails Center, 41 Walnut St., Columbia. The program will focus on exploring the outdoors through onwater and on-land activities.

Designed for youths ages 12 to 15, SUSQ Camp will take place from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. each day from Monday, July 29, through Friday, Aug. 2. Columbia Crossing program coordinator Allison Scholz explained that campers will spend half the day paddling on the Susquehanna River with professional guides and instructors from Chiques Rock Outfitters to learn proper technique and water safety. Paddling will include out-and-back exercises on the section of the Susquehanna River at the Columbia Crossing River Trails Center and other excursions down the river to destinations that will require taking a shuttle ride back.

The rest of the day will feature on-land activities with Susquehanna Heritage staff members leading activities including water quality exploration, arts and crafts, and games. Participants will also explore the Northwest River Trail. Other potential recreational activities may include bicycling on the Northwest River Trail, geocaching in Chickies Rock Park, and tubing on Chiques Creek.

For parents - or campers - who may be a bit apprehensive about the campers pad-

dling on the river, Columbia Crossing manager Hope Byers noted that safety will be emphasized in all activities. Tandem kayaks will be offered for students who may not feel comfortable navigating the water alone, and the campers will have adult guides accompanying them at all times. “It’s a progressive experience,” said Byers, adding that campers will learn skills and techniques before going out on the water.

In addition to developing new skills, Scholz and Byers hope that participants will gain an appreciation for the Susquehanna River and become more comfortable on the water - perhaps making them lifelong river connoisseurs. “We find that kids who do get out on the water (at a younger age) are more likely to get back out there again,” Scholz remarked.

The camp will be limited to 20 campers. Partial and full scholarships are available thanks to the generosity of several Columbia-area businesses and will be awarded on a firstcome, first-served basis as applications are submitted and reviewed. All kayaking and paddling equipment, instruction, and field trips will be included in the set camp fee.

All radio activities are made possible through an equipment grant from the York County Community Foundation’s Embracing Aging Grant program.

The Fit N Fun exercise program is offered daily from 10 to 10:30 a.m. On Wednesdays, there are dancing classes, with exercise games on Fridays.

Volunteer drivers are needed to deliver hot meals to homebound seniors three mornings a week (Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays). Training will be provided.

This is an unpaid position, but volunteer work may be tax-deductible.

“Healthy Steps” Exercise Program Planned The York County Area Agency on Aging announced the return of Healthy Steps in Motion (HSIM), a falls-prevention exercise program for adults age 60 and older. This evidence-based series is designed especially for older adults who have concerns about falling and are interested in exercise-focused strength training, as well as balance improvement.

This free program starts with a warmup, followed by strength and balance exercises and ending with a cooldown stretch. There are three levels of

exercise, which enables participants to continue HSIM for as long as they like.

HSIM strives to reduce the risk of falling by building body strength, increasing flexibility, and improving balance.

Participants will learn about exercise basics and safety, setting goals, aerobic walking, and more. In addition, they will be assessed for fall risk and be given a free participant’s guide and other resources. Classes will be held at two locations and are free and open to the public.

Rudy County Park, 400 Mundis Race Road, York, on Saturday, July 13, at 8 p.m. The event is free and open to the community. Hot beverages and light refreshments will be available.

The evening will begin with a screened astronomical presentation on Apollo 11’s 50th anniversary and current events and

the July night sky. Guests will then be guided on a tour of the sky through one of the club’s telescopes. Attendees will be shown a host of celestial objects to include the planet Jupiter, the Andromeda galaxy, star clusters, Ring Nebula, and much more.

Stuff-A-Bus Red Lion Announced A Stuff-A-Bus event will collect nonperishable food items for Community REACH Inc. and its summer backpack program from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Tuesday, July 16, in the Red Lion Area High School parking lot adjacent to Horn Field. The Horn Farm Center for Agricultural Education will kick off “Where the Wild Things Grow,” a youth summer program for children ages 6 to 12, on Thursday, July 18. The program will take place from 9 a.m. to noon on Thursdays through Aug. 8, offering students a chance for hands-on exploration on the grounds of the Horn Farm Center for Agricultural Education, 4945 Horn Road, Hellam.

Under the guidance of Jason Reed, director of sustainability and ecoliteracy at the Waldorf School of Baltimore, students will engage the environment from the farm’s wild edges to its cultivated gardens.

Reed is a passionate contributor to the dialogue on ecological responsibility and people’s role in the world. He lives on a fiveacre homestead near Stewartstown, which he shares with heritage hogs and turkeys, goats, chickens, and a basement bug-growing operation. Reed is a founding member of the Filbert Street Community Garden in Baltimore, an Open Society Institute-recognized project. The garden is an urban food forest designed as a safe space for community members to educate and organize around their resources to create a safer, healthier home.

With an emphasis on holistic fun, activi-

ties at “Where the Wild Things Grow” will include foraging for wild food, playing in the stream, tracking and observing wildlife, growing and harvesting sprouts and microgreens, and investigating the natural world.

Since activities will be outdoors in all weather, participants should dress accordingly and bring a backpack of appropriate supplies such as sunscreen, bug spray, and towels.

Environmental educator Elyse Jurgen will guide students through activities in age-appropriate groups. Building Backyard Habitats, designed for students ages 9 to 11, will be held from 9 to 11:30 a.m., and Building Community Habitats, designed for students ages 12 to 14, will be held from 12:30 to 3 p.m.

In Building Backyard Habitats, younger students will explore the farm through the eyes of their favorite critters. York Teachers Receive Funds SONIC Drive-In recently recognized teachers and the contributions they make to education as a part of its Limeades for Learning initiative in partnership with nonprofit partner DonorChoose.org. With the goal of helping teachers obtain classroom supplies and learning resources, SONIC launched a donation match in honor of Teacher Appreciation Month in May and gave $1,281 to two teachers in York.

YCSWA Holds Hazardous Waste Collection The York County Solid Waste Authority (YCSWA) held a free residential Household Hazardous Waste Collection Program on May 4 in Manchester Township.

The event removed 13.35 tons of household hazardous waste from the waste stream.

Household hazardous waste includes any products from the home that are corrosive, such as drain cleaners or bleach; flammable, like gasoline; reactive, as in chemistry kits; or toxic, such as pesticides. The program benefits York County by identifying hazardous wastes found in the home and providing an opportunity to manage these materials in a safe and efficient

manner.

York County homeowners or residential tenants who missed the May 4 event may take advantage of an option called At Your Door Special Collection, which enables York County residents to call 800-449-7587 to schedule a home pickup of household hazardous waste. Residents may schedule two pickups per home per calendar year and can request up to two “kit bags” per pickup to fill with acceptable household hazardous products.

Surviving Spouse Socials To Meet The regular meeting of Surviving Spouse Socials is held on the first Tuesday of every month except for August and December. The purpose of this group is to help those who have been widowed for some time to move on with their lives. All widowed men and women are welcome to attend.

Food Distribution For Seniors Slated On the third Monday of each month, eligible seniors will be able to receive a box containing free food at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 2121 Roosevelt Ave., York, from 1 to 3 p.m. This is a program of the York County Food Bank. The next distribution will take place on Monday, July 15.

To be eligible, a person must be at

least age 60, live in York County, and have a household income of not more than $1,354 monthly for one person or $1,832 monthly for two people. There are incremental increases for additional family members, and those numbers can be provided upon request.

A valid ID and proof of income (such as

Church To Celebrate Stained Project Linus Seeks Glass Windows would hinder the organ’s acoustics.

The pastor, the Rev. Fred Walthour, had done stained glass as a hobby for several years. His teacher, Peggy Frantz, of Ric-O-Che Stained Glass in Jacobus, suggested that Walthour teach church members how to make stained glass windows.

More than 30 people ranging in age from 12 to 73 volunteered to help with the project. During the nine-year project, congregants built 18 windows in the sanctuary focused on the life and saying of Jesus Christ. They later created large windows in two entrances focused on “The Garden of Eden” and the hymn “Rejoice, Ye Pure in Heart” and the chorus “Jesus Loves the Little Children of the World.”

During the anniversary service, the congregation will recognize this group of window makers on the anniversary of the unique project. There will also be a dedication of three windows made this year for the community room. The new windows were mainly made by new artisans. The public is invited to an open house from 2 to 3 p.m. to view the windows. The sanctuary will also be open for those who may have never seen the original windows.

Mount Pisgah Trinity United Methodist Church, 5615 Mount Pisgah Road, York, will hold a craft class on Thursday, July 18, at 1 p.m.

Project Linus will not meet on Saturday, July 13, due to storm damage at Fourth United Methodist Church, where meetings are held. Donations of fleece blankets will still be received at various dropoff locations. Directions on how to make the blankets are available by emailing projectblankets@hotmail.com.
