Book Sale Will Support LifePath

Christ Lutheran Church of Spry, 2385 S. Queen St., York, will celebrate its 51st Strawberry Festival on Saturday, June 1, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The event will be held rain or shine.

The event will feature strawberries, shortcake, and ice cream, as well as homemade chicken corn soup by the bowl or quart, hot dogs, hamburgers, nacho chips and cheese, chips, desserts, and beverages. A bake sale will take place as well.

A live auction will take place from noon to 4 p.m.

Early Registration Opens For SummerQuest Early registration has opened for York County Libraries’ 2019 SummerQuest, “A Universe of Stories.” To register children, readers may visit http://summerquest. yorklibraries.org. The free program is geared for children from birth to age 18 and will run from Saturday, June 1, to Sunday, Aug. 18. This year’s SummerQuest will explore the universe through hundreds of family-friendly activities. Children only need a free York County Libraries card to participate.

After children are preregistered, they may pick up their SummerQuest packets at one of the three kickoff events on June 1.

LifePath Christian Ministries will hold its annual book sale on Friday, May 31, and Saturday, June 1. This year’s sale has a new location and a special early bird session, another new feature.

Book sale hours will be from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on May 31 and from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on June 1.

Thousands of gently used books will be available for sale in all interest categories.

The sale will take place at a new location this year - York College of Pennsylvania’s Grumbacher Center, 889 S. Richland Ave., York. Ample off-street parking will be available. Volunteers will help shoppers carry their purchases to their cars.

Church Will Host Voice Recital St. John Lutheran Church, 2580 Mount Rose Ave., York, will host a voice recital featuring Bob Kilgore on Sunday, June 2, at 4:30 p.m. in the church sanctuary.

Susquehanna Heritage Slates Fundraiser Surviving Spouse Socials To Meet Susquehanna Heritage will along the Susquehanna River heritage.

Choir Will Perform Concert The Chancel Choir of Eastminster Presbyterian Church, 311 Haines Road, York, will perform Joseph M. Martin’s “One Holy Light, One Heavenly Flame” on Sunday, June 2, during the 11 a.m. worship service.

The Twin Rose Community Band will perform a concert on Sunday, June 9, at 2:30 p.m. at Advent Lutheran Church, 1775 E. Market St., York, in the fellowship hall.

The Let’s Get Physical! Camp will be held from June 3 to 6.

Children will play all sorts of large muscle games, dance, and use gym equipment. Participants will try yoga and get outside as much as the weather allows.

The Exploration Station (STEM) Camp will be held from June 24 to 27. Children will explore space, conduct experiments, and more.

The Books and Cooks Camp is open to campers ages 5 to 10 and will be held from July 15 to 18.

Participants will enjoy a week of cooking and literature. The youths will explore a book or two

each day as well as create a coordinating recipe. There will also be games, crafts, and snacks.

The final camp for the summer will be Creepy Crawlers, which will be held from Aug. 5 to 8.

Children will learn about all kinds of creatures while making crafts, reading stories, and playing games to go along with the theme.

In its third year, the York County “No Excuses: Youth Traffic Safety” Billboard Design Contest invited York County high school students who have a strong belief in traffic safety and who want to make a difference among their peers to enter. For this campaign, teenagers were approached through their high school faculty and administration to design a billboard that targeted one or more of the following traffic safety messages: discourage distracted driving, encourage seat belt use, and/or discourage aggressive/reckless driving.

The winning design was created by four students from Northern High School. Those students are Jack Phipps, Ryan Allen, Reid Weber, and Ian Hall. The winning

entry addresses both distracted driving and distracted pedestrians. The four students are featured in the actual design. Their entry was the favorite among all the student judges.

Northern High School will receive a $1,000 mini-grant to be used toward traffic safety programming. All four of the designers will each receive $100 for his contribution to the winning design.

This billboard was displayed along I-83 North, just south of Exit 32 (Newberrytown), during the month of April - National Distracted Driving Awareness Month. The site was chosen because it was identified as being a high-incidence roadway for crashes involving teenage drivers, according to PennDOT

crash data analysis.

The second-place design was created by Neharika Noor and Ally Sipe, two students from Central York High School. Central will receive a $500 mini-grant to be used for traffic safety programming. Although the secondplace design was not to be made into a billboard, it was to be used extensively in other media, including social media.

Judges for the contest came from two groups: 1) professionals and experts in the field of traffic safety, marketing, planning departments, and media, and 2) high school students for their peer perspective. The student judging results weighed heavily in determining the winning entry, because they are the target audience and advocates.

Distinguished Honor Roll Set Eastern York Middle School recently announced its distinguished honor roll for the third marking period of the 2018-19 school year. Students in grades six through eight were recognized for their academic excellence.

YCAAA Seeks Volunteers The York County Area Agency on Aging (YCAAA) is seeking volunteers for its Friendly Visitor and Financial Counselor programs. There are needs throughout York County.

A volunteer friendly visitor is someone who is willing to share an hour or two each week with a homebound older adult. These visits offer an opportunity for social contact, whether spent reading, writing letters, playing

cards or board games, or just chatting.

Financial counselors visit older adults on a regular basis and assist them with budgeting, balancing a checkbook, paying bills, and other financial functions. Financial counselors work closely with the consumer’s care manager.

There are volunteer opportunities for both men and women age 18 or older

who like to help others. No experience is needed. YCAAA provides training for both programs.

Hackett Joins Regional Team Ben Franklin Technology PArtners of Central and Northern Pennsylvania recently announced the addition of Joseph Hackett to its team in the York/Adams region. Hackett will serve in the capacity of executive-in-residence, a role in which he will mentor and support emerging tech startups seeking early-stage investment from Ben Franklin while also helping to identify second-stage sources of capital for the portfolio’s growth-based companies.

Hackett has deep roots in both the York and entrepreneurial communities.

His presence in the York area, as

well as the office hours he will have on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons at the J.D. Brown Center for Entrepreneurship at York College of Pennsylvania, will help Ben Franklin identify, fund, support, and grow the entrepreneurial pipeline in York and Adams counties.

After graduating from Bloomsburg University, Hackett began his career in banking as a commercial lender and was promoted from junior lending officer to vice president in five years. Later positions included vice president and private banking relationship manager at Fulton Bank’s Clermont

Wealth Strategies and senior private banking officer and vice president at PeoplesBank.

In 2015, Hackett became the chief operating officer with MI-12 Ventures LLC in central Pennsylvania. In this position, he was responsible for the overall management of the investment process. Currently, Hackett is also the managing partner of Aim Advisors LLC, where he has developed strategic relationships with experienced tax and planning organizations, including valuation firms, estate planning practices, and specialty accounting groups in Pennsylvania and Maryland.

The Teen Cupcake Wars qualifying round will take place on June 20 from 4 to 6 p.m.

Teenagers ages 13 to 18 will decorate provided cupcakes, and the best decoration will advance to the championship on Sunday, July 21, at the Red Lion Recreation Center. Registration is required for the qualifying round.

The library will host LEAP Into Science with Tara Tolton on Wednesday, June 19, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. The program is for children ages 5 to 10.

The LEGO Builders’ Club will hold a meeting on June 20 from 6:30 to 7:30 pm. The club is open to children age 6 and up. Participants may take on a provided challenge or build something from their imagination.

SummerQuest will include two programs for tweens ages 9 to 12.

The Friends of Kreutz Creek Library Branch Support Group will meet on Wednesday, June 26, at 5:30 p.m. The group welcomes fresh ideas and suggestions for activities to be held throughout the year.

The Knitters and Crocheters group meets on the first and third Tuesdays of each month. People of all skill levels are welcome, and

group members will help others learn to knit or crochet. Attendees should bring needles and yarn.

Knitters and crocheters may bring their current projects to work on and projects for show-and-tell.

Tech Time, formerly the Tech Guru program, will have a new schedule in June. York County Libraries’ new technology specialist hopes to begin visiting all York County Libraries’ locations in June to help people with their technology questions. Additionally, each month the technology specialist will showcase at least one of the library’s digital resources. The date and time of the program will be posted on Kreutz Creek Library’s website and Facebook page.

More than 3,000 specialty vehicles will be on hand at the York Expo Center, 334 Carlisle Ave., York, from Friday, May 31, through Sunday, June 2, for the 46th annual Street Rod Nationals East. This will be the 39th time the vintage car show has been held in York, and alltime highs for participants and spectaculars are expected. A large part of the York Expo Center will be utilized for the event, as well as most of the buildings, which will house manufacturer and dealer displays and other attractions.

The host organization, National Street Rod Association (NSRA), defines a street rod as a modernized vintage vehicle that must be of pre-1949 manufacture. These vehicles are equipped with the latest options available on the newest model vehicles, including but not limited to brakes, air conditioning, cruise control, and tilt steering wheels. Most of the vehicles attending have an updated engine and drive train in order to safely maintain the speeds traveled by more modern vehicles.

The event will also include muscle cars: factory-produced high-horsepower machines

from the 1960s, ’70s, and ’80s, along with the classic cars of the 1950s.

The NSRA Street Rod Nationals East will feature a mix of old and new vehicles, and the national gathering will boast a wide variety of vintage automobiles. The event is open to the public, and spectators may walk up to the vehicles to check them out up close. There is an admission fee, which will be discounted for children ages 6 to 12, senior citizens age 60 and up with ID, military personnel with ID, and NSRA members with a current membership card. Children under age 6 may attend for free.

The event will again include a Pinstripe Jamboree and Charity Auction, during which pinstriping, airbrushing, and hand-lettering artists from around the United States will combine to raise money for Make-A-Wish.

The Street Rod Nationals East will also include games, activities, and live music.

The event will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on May 31 and on Saturday, June 1, and it will be open from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on June 2. Additional information is available at www.nsra-usa.com.

A Diabetes Self-Management Program will be held every Monday from June 3 to July 15, except June 17, from 12:30 to 3 p.m. This comprehensive six-week program will give attendees information to help them better manage their diabetes, including information about food and other topics. Annual health programs with HACC nursing students, titled “Ask The Nurses,” will continue on upcoming Tuesdays. The students (with instructors) will present on a variety of topics, then answer questions related to those subjects. Reservations are requested but not required, and these programs are open to people of all ages.

A scrapbooking class will be held on Thursday, June 6, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Attendees will learn to assemble their photos and memorabilia in an organized and exciting manner.

Wood-burning workshops/classes are offered on select Fridays, with the next class on June 7. Participants may bring their own projects or purchase limited, low-cost supplies.

Instruction and tools will be provided.

Free lunch is served on weekdays to anyone at least 60 years of age.

Honors Choirs Plan Concert York County Honors Choirs will perform its season finale concert on Sunday, June 2, at 6:30 p.m. The concert will take place at Appell Center for the Performing Arts, 50 N. George St., York.
