How does the organization work to achieve its goals/mission?

Since 1985, Human Life Services (HLS) has been a life-affirming, Christ-centered pregnancy care center serving York County women and men of all ages who are experiencing unplanned pregnancies. All HLS services are free, including pregnancy testing, obstetrical ultrasounds, confidential counseling about pregnancy options, prenatal and parenting education, baby supplies and clothing, and post-abortion recovery counseling.

In keeping with our mission, HLS welcomes every woman and man who walks through our door with respect, compassion, and confidentiality. We help them identify their needs and perceived/real obstacles, so that we can best serve them in their current situation. We always offer Christ-centered, life-affirming, nonjudgmental, and confidential counseling to discuss their pregnancy options.

Many clients walk out the door to make their decisions, and we never know their choices. Others stay to be supported,

receive our prenatal and parenting education, and spend the “baby bucks” they’ve earned to buy supplies and clothing in our baby boutique.

Approximately how many staff members and volunteers are involved?

Seven staff members and 50 volunteers Did Human Life Services participate in the inaugural Give Local York last year?

Yes! It was a very positive experience. The Give Local York team was supportive. We were blessed to raise more than $52,000 last year, which put us in fourth pace of the highest money raised. In addition, we received $4,000 in stretch money!

What are the organization’s goals for 2019?

In addition to serving 25% more clients in 2019, we would like to add a testing and treatment program for STIs (sexually transmitted infections).

Where will funds raised through Give Local York be directed?

In addition to supporting our operation budget to be able to help more clients, money raised through this year’s Give Local York campaign will help us investigate testing and treatment for STIs. The expenses of adding this STI program include expanding facilities and staff, in addition to purchasing testing kits.

How does the organization work to achieve its goals?

Kavanna House is a nonprofit spiritual formation center designed to offer individuals the means to move into deeper intimacy with God. Kavanna is a Hebrew word meaning “intentional, awakened, mindful, and devoted to prayer.” Our desire is that we be a sanctuary where individuals, groups, and organizations can experience transformation through courses, workshops, retreats, and other services.

Kavanna House is not affiliated with any

specific church or denomination.

Approximately how many staff members and volunteers are involved?

Kavanna House has four staff members and four as-needed course instructors. There are approximately 20 people serving in various volunteer roles throughout the organization.

Did Kavanna House participate in the inaugural Give Local York last year?

Kavanna House did not participate in 2018. We decided to become involved this year to help build awareness of our presence and work in York and the surrounding areas and to hopefully raise some needed operational funds for our organization.

What are the organization’s goals for 2019?

In 2019, Kavanna House will continue our

existing docket of cohorts and courses, but we are also adding additional guided group retreats, a revised Introduction to Contemplative Spirituality course, courses on the Enneagram, and an expanded offering in our formational prayer ministry that will result in the launch of an eight-month cohort focused on formational prayer in early 2020.

Where will funds raised through Give Local York be directed?

Funds raised through Give Local York will be used toward our general programs and operations funds.

How does the camp work to achieve its goals?

York City Day Camp is a four-week summer day camp for students from York city and surrounding communities who are entering grades one through six. Our highest priority is to provide safe and stable care for students. The vision of the Christianbased camp program is to share Jesus with children from York city and surrounding communities while providing them with a structured and nurturing environment for four weeks in July. The goals of the day camp are to develop a sense of community

among the campers, to experience weekly field trips to community parks and public places for recreation, and to teach campers life and leadership skills that will serve them throughout their lives.

YCDC is a ministry of Messiah United Methodist Church, and it is governed by an independent board of directors representing local churches, the community, and parents of campers.

Approximately how many staff members and volunteers are involved?

York City Day Camp is led by a team including co-directors, a lead teacher, a lead counselor, and a host of volunteers including teenagers and adults. The program requires dozens of volunteers who work tirelessly behind the scenes to prepare for camp, provide activities and meals, and more.

Did this organization participate in the inaugural Give Local York last year?

YCDC did not participate in Give Local York last year. We were thrilled to see so

many organizations enjoy a successful campaign to support their nonprofit programs.

More than anything, we began to understand how many lives of children and youths would be impacted through Give Local York.

Our hearts are certainly with the young people of our community.

What are the organization’s goals for Give Local York 2019?

YCDC has a goal this year of raising $10,000. We know it is a lofty goal, but this is less than half of our actual budget. We host 50 students each summer for camp.

Last summer, half of those students received at least partial scholarships to attend. We would like to continue to provide excellent care and new experiences to any student entering grades one through six, regardless of family income.

Where will funds raised through Give Local York be directed?

The funds raised will support the activities, travel, meals, scholarships, and overall programming.

Sparrow Place Schedules Event Sparrow Place, a local nonprofit looking to open a long-term residential restorative program in York County for survivors of domestic sex trafficking, will host an interactive street event in Continental Square during the Give Local York and First Friday celebration on Friday, May 3, from 5 to 9 p.m. The event will raise awareness of human trafficking and commercial sexual exploitation.

Greater York Dance Plans Programs Greater York Dance, 3524 E. Market St., York, has announced that “Leap Into Sparkle Day” will start on Thursday, May 2. A four-week course will allow participants to try out the Twinkle Star and ShowStars Dance Program, which is for children ages 2 to 6. The annual membership registration fee will be waived.

The programs will be held on Thursdays, May 2, 9, 16, and 23. Twinkle Babies, for children ages 2 to 4, will be held from 1 to 1:30 p.m. Twinkle Star Dance Level 2/3, for children ages 3 to 6, will be held from 1:30 to 2:15 p.m.

The programs are crafted to provide the best in children’s dance. Instructors have been certified and will begin teaching these programs this school year. The programs will teach children spatial awareness and help them to develop motor skills and improve upon their balance, stamina, coordination, and strength. There are four pillars of Twinkle Star Dance that make up the Twinkle Star Method: Skill Building, Creative Movement, Just for Fun, and Showtime.

Child Care Consultants

Give Local York, the 24-hour Give Day for York County, will return on Friday, May 3. Last year’s Give Local York event raised $1.478 million for 211 nonprofit organizations in just 24 hours. This year, 320 organizations whose work benefits York County residents have registered to participate in Give Local York.

On May 3, from midnight to 11:59 p.m., people may visit www.givelocal york.org from any computer, smartphone, or device to donate to any of the hundreds of local organizations participating. The goal for this year’s give is $3 million.

Dollars raised that day will be stretched by a pool of $335,000. The stretch pool serves as a percentage match for participating organizations.

Additionally, organizations have the opportunity to win more than $22,000 in prizes on Give Day. On May 3, York County will be transformed into a community-wide celebration of generosity. Give Local York activities will take place all over York County, with nonprofits working together to host events from Dillsburg to Delta and Hanover to Hellam and everywhere in between. The events are free and open to the public.

YWCA York will hold its annual event with a twist, Lessons From My Daughter, on Tuesday, May 7, at 11:30 a.m. at Heritage Hills Golf Resort, 2700 Mount Rose Ave., York. The event will include a luncheon panel discussion with four leaders who will share how their daughters have impacted them and helped shape their lives.

Several community members will participate in a discussion and share their personal experiences with their daughter’s influence.

United Way of York County’s president, Anne Druck, will serve as the moderator of the conversation. The other panelists include Jamiel Alexander, senior fellow, The Aspen Institute; Angela Ang-Alhadeff, administrative coordinator, Leadership York; Robin Gross, co-owner, Ground Roots and Strathmeyer Christmas Trees; and Jean Treuthart, CEO, YWCA York.

The Dorrie Leader Advocacy Award recipient will also be recognized during the event.

The award was established in 1995 in honor of Dorrie Leader, a former YWCA York president. This award recognizes women advocates in the community.

Groups To Hold Native Plant Sale In York

Proceeds from the event will benefit MAEscapes gardens and education programs.

Through the Native Plant Sales, together the groups have planted more than 41,000 native plants to benefit butterflies, birds and bees, along with more than 5,200 milkweed

plants to support local monarch populations.

They have also created living landscapes by planting hundreds of trees and shrubs, including dogwood, serviceberry, spicebush, maples and blueberries to help breeding birds feed their young and increase their population.

Submissions Sought For Poetry Contest

York County Literacy Council (YCLC) launched its 12th annual Literacy Empowerment Campaign on March 19.

The campaign has a fundraising goal of $95,000 and will conclude on Give Local York Day, Friday, May 3, at 11:59 p.m.

School To Add New Playground In the coming year, Logos Academy plans to add a playground to its campus on West King Street, York, to provide a safe place for active play. The playground will be used for the school’s 260-plus students and be open to the community after school.

During Give Local York on Friday, May 3, Logos Academy will raise funds for the construction of the playground. The plans include 10,000 square feet of fenced space, a play structure, swings, security cameras, and lighting.

The Horn Farm Center for Agricultural Education in York will hold an heirloom plant sale on Saturday, May 4.

Spring Special Olympics Slated Library Plans Tea, Other Programs The 39th annual spring games of the Special Olympics - York County will take place on Saturday, May 4, at the Grumbacher Center on the campus of York College, 441 Country Club Road, York. The parade of athletes will kick off the event at 9 a.m., followed by opening ceremonies, the lighting of the torch, and the start of the games.

The event will feature competitions in tennis, aquatics, and athletics. The athletes have been training since January.

The public is invited to attend and cheer on the athletes.

vides year-round sports training and competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. All training and competition opportunities are provided free of charge to the athletes and their families. The amateur (ham) radio group has expanded and is operating a fully functional station. The group will connect connect to the Atlantic traffic net on Monday, May 6, at 3 p.m. Classes will allow participants to study for the technician’s license on that date from 1 to 2 p.m. and the general license on from 2 to 3 p.m. All are welcome to observe and/or participate.

The group has already connected to 28 states and at least six countries and received a communication from the Space Station. The group’s goal is to reach all 50 states and 35 countries. Kinard is the co-founder of Celebrating York’s Unity Through 10,000 Acts of Kindness, a multicultural event and dinner for 10,000 people, each of whom has completed an act of kindness. The event will take place on Sunday, June 30, in Penn Park.

Emmanuel United Church of Christ (UCC), 1625 Windsor Road, Freysville, will install the Rev. Christina M. Fidanza as pastor and teacher on Sunday, May 5, at 3 p.m.

Fidanza is a 2015 Master of Divinity graduate from Lancaster Theological Seminary.

Ordained into Christian ministry in November 2016, she previously served as pastor for the Cashtown-McKnightstown Charge of the UCC, 7 miles west of Gettysburg. She previously worked in agricultural and pharmaceutical research until she became disabled.

Fidanza also serves as a member on the UCC Disabilities Ministries Board.

A luncheon at the church will follow the installation service. All are welcome.
